LOL it's almost 5 carats total - I'd say that would be a "win at life five times."

We haven't talked in a while about getting engaged, but I'm starting to think about it myself. I can assure you I will not be getting that ring. I'd be lucky to get a pop can tab.

I think you should put it on your list just for laughs. I want a pic of his face when he sees it!

One of my friends has a 3.75 ct (three stones, center = 3 ct) and that's seriously huge to me. I'd feel like I had a liability on my hand. lol.

A simple little solitaire will do just fine for me.

I'm with you...plus, if I've got to wear it every day I need it to not be in my way.

I've never dated anyone that could afford a ring that big, anyway. ;)

My internship supervisor got engaged and her ring is at least 3 carats, excluding the 2 baguettes on either side of the solitaire...I can't help but to stare at it.

Before I got engaged I was of the mind that my ring had to be at least 1.5 carats . My ring isn't even a full carat, and I couldn't be any happier with it.

Trust me, I know of such things.

LOL I can't imagine someone dropping that much money on an engagement ring and buying it on Amazon.com. For that price tag, go to Tiffany's, or freaking Jacob the Jeweler. :p

iSquealed out loud because you know who this is.

I can't imagine what a Jacob engagement ring would look like.

I was exactly the same way! I thought I wanted AT LEAST a carat, but possibly more than that...my ring is 0.91 and I think it's a perfect size for me.

Kappamd 11-07-2010 03:05 PM

Ditto lovespink. Mine is just under 1 including the center and side stones, and I think it is perfect. Fiance opted for a higher quality stone instead of the extra carat weight, and I'm glad he did.

My mom is a jewelry buff and she always said medium sized high quality ring > huge ring that is cloudy and/or looks like a tooth with black cavities in it.

Kappamd 11-07-2010 03:18 PM

I believe it. One of my friends has a fairly large ring, probably close to 2 carats. However, it has a visibly yellow tinge to it, and just doesn't catch the light like mine does. But I'm biased, lol.

Now, my mom's new ring is the perfect marriage of carat size (about 1.3) and quality and it is STUNNING. Kudos to my dad.

My mom's anniversary was this weekend and she got a new ring too! It's about that size (a solitaire). Her original was a little more than a half (like a .65 or something).

ETA: No joke -this is the ring that Nick Cannon gave to Mariah, designed by Jacob the Jeweler. It's got 17 carats of diamonds, it's set in platinum, and cost roughly $2.5M. The center stone alone is 10 carats. There are over 50 diamonds on the ring.

joliebelle 11-07-2010 05:02 PM

^^That ring is seriously...tacky. Less can be more, even for Mariah Carey.

Yep...mine is .875 (or 7/8 carat) and it's perfect.

Agreed. Quality > quantity. I have no clue how much fiance spent on my ring, but it's certified (and super sparkly :p)

The ex-boyfriend has bailed on me as a formal date, so I'm taking my friend, who is also a girl. If they try to tell me I can't, I'll just sue them. bah humbug

You chapter has a rule that your formal date has to be a guy? We had girls bring female friends as formal dates all the time.

Didn't you kind of suspect that he'd bail? I mean, going to a formal with a girl you split up with like weeks prior would be a little awkward.

I had a break up with a guy right before a HS formal. He said we could still go together, but I found a new date because who wants to go to formal with a guy you broke up with (when I could go with someone who actually liked me?)

thetaj 11-08-2010 11:57 PM

^^^ No I don't think we do. I'm just grumpy. I didn't really think he'd bail but hey

DrPhil 11-09-2010 09:51 AM

Thetaj,

In all honesty, why wouldn't he bail? I wish he was honest with you from the jump so you could've planned for the formal without him. Other than that, it is a good thing that he bailed. From just reading your posts. you were struggling with this breakup, a bit bitter, and kind of hoping that you would get back together. That's the recipe for disaster and holding onto something that is long gone. Going to a formal together would be a horrible idea.

As for friends attending a formal together, the noncollegiate formals that I attend only give couple ticket prices for romantic couples. A platonic friend does not count regardless of the gender.

I took a friend from another campus sorority to my last formal because the guy I was seeing at the time was home in England...it was made obvious to me that those in charge didn't like it, but if there's no rule against it, there's no rule against it. We went and had an awesome time.

Yay! I haven't seen my fiance in about a month either, and I'm going to visit this weekend. I wish the week would go by just a littttttle bit faster.

Preston327 11-10-2010 02:29 AM

Dear Friends,

Your arguments against taking my formal date to formal are sound. However, I'm still not an asshole and I'm not breaking her heart after she's been looking forward to this all semester. Yeah, her laundry list of restrictions and requests irks me a bit. Yeah, she doesn't drink and she's going to be around a bunch of drunk people for the night. But, I think she'll have fun or I wouldn't have invited her.

Thanks again for respecting my choice in this matter.

On FB, one of my cousin's friends is all "woe is us" about Black women not getting married, and how no one wants Black women. I'm like, "WTF stop acting like the victim." I mentioned how I've never had a lack of Dude in my life. She hasn't said anything else yet.

I'm sick of this victim shit. We're not all at home watching Tyler Perry movies and crying into our Haagen-Dazs.

The sad thing is that from what I can glean from her FB page, she's like 24 or 25. Way too young to have such a cynical view of relationships and her long-term relationship outlook. She's still going on, and my cousin and I have moved on to other stuff, LOL.
