And / or the pages for Walton Hall (capacity, room layouts, etc.)

WTF? Walton Hall is where AOII was supposed to live, but they found black mold 10 days before we were supposed to move in, which caused the most stressful period of my entire life as I had 10 days to come up with housing for 60+ people.

Pi Phi just announced on their FB page that they will be colonizing Case Western University in Fall 2012

Presumably they have that fixed by now. So it was temporary housing for a year or two until they got a house? How did that work?

APhi4Ever 03-20-2012 01:29 PM

Per Sigma Delta Tau's Facebook page, they are presenting at Monmouth University in Illinois! Anyone know who else is presenting? Good luck!

AOII built a new house on Maple, but it took almost 2 years. Fortunately our girls had signed contracts with residential life and not with AOII for the year in Walton. So, when the director of RHA called me and told me about the mold (essentially dumping it in my lap), I gently reminded him that the university had the responsibility to provide housing for these students, not me. Of course, RHA doesn't care if that housing is appropriate for recruitment, etc., so I moved to Fayetteville for 2 weeks and worked with RHA in a total overhaul of the old Sigma Nu house on Arkansas Avenue. It was awesome. That place was a total pit, and no human, let alone sorority girl, could live in it. The university footed the bill and got the contractors in there, and I worked with AOII's interior designer. We put in all new bathrooms, flooring, knocked out some walls, bought furnishings, had it landscaped, and by the end of it, things looked pretty cute. Granted, they were still installing showers as the girls were moving in, but it worked out.

It was a pit in the seventies!!!!

It is amazing what time & some fraternity guys can do to a house. The Sigma Nu house was built in the early 1950s & designed by a very famous architect, Edward D. Stone, who was famous for inventing the idea of a screen grill work on the exterior of many large buildings. He did several major skyscrapers in NYC & elsewhere. When the house was opened it got a lot of attention and publicity.

wavycutchip 03-20-2012 03:06 PM

While I don't know too much, I did hear that both AXO and PM met 3/16 for colonization planning meetings at Arkansas. I am sure that they discussed a timeline/plan for both the colonization and permanent locations for the groups. Since AOPi's colonization, there have been students living in Walton Hall continuously for the past few years (my guess would be that housing fixed the mold issue) - and as Phi Delt staffer said - several fraternity men have been housed their temporarily as their permanent housing facilities are built. It should be an interesting year as 2 colonizing sororities and 2 colonizing fraternities use the same space!

Yes, the building was a mess and had not been kept up well (roaches so big you could saddle up and ride them) but a lot if it was just that it was flat out ugly. Flat roof, hideous brick and metal work inside the living areas, and the ambience of a prison. I know styles change, but I can't believe this was ever desirable.

As for students living in Walton - I know when AOII colonized, the University's plan was to tear down Walton as soon as we were done with it. They told us we could do whatever we wanted to the interior because the wrecking ball was the next tenant. I guess the immediate and urgent need for housing changed their plans.

Glad to hear that SDT is presenting at Monmouth University, not Monmouth College! I volunteer with our chapter at MC and I hadn't heard anything about expansion, so I gasped out loud when I read that first comment! :)

Does anyone else who currently volunteers with chapters have difficulty finding out when Panhellenic starts discussing expansion? Sometimes the chapters I support don’t realize how important it is to clue in volunteers and Fraternity staff members right when the discussion begins. It's sad that I’ve heard about expansions/colonizations on GreekChat before I’ve heard it from my chapter – I imagine that I'm not the only one!

Theta Chi recently colonized at Southern Polytechnic State University (Marietta, GA), becoming the 7th IFC chapter on campus. Congratulations and good luck to the colony members.

Theta Chi also re-chartered their Alpha Upsilon chapter at the University of Nebraska. Congratulations to the new members.

I would say just keep reminding them of when to contact you, HQ staff, your Delegation - whatever your process. With the leadership turnover yearly with the collegians, it seems that these things don't get passed down no matter how great the training. Hopefully the advisor reminds them of when to get in touch. Additionally, the NPC Area Advisor should be reaching out the NPC Delegates letting them know that an expansion discussion is going to take place to make it a two pronged approach. That doesn't always happen, and not all CPH's are forth coming with communication either but with everything in life, we could all work to improve something!

KSUViolet06 03-21-2012 05:54 PM

^^I work with chapters and this is very true. You just have to keep on top of it and stay in touch. I also remind my Recruitment Directors how important it is for me to know about it. Generally they're pretty good about telling me. I have yet to find out about expansion discussion from here before a chapter tells me.

You may want to get in touch with the Panhellenic Advisor on campus and see if she's willing to email the Chapter Advisors on campus with important topics or ask her to send the agendas and meeting minutes to the CAs. There are all kinds of issues that come up at Panhellenic meetings that CAs should be aware of. You could also request those agendas and minutes from the chapter's Panhellenic Delegate.

Blog article about Sigma Tau Gamma's colonization efforts at Illinois. The article mentions that Sig Tau just colonized at Purdue and successfully pledged 62 men. There is also a link to a Phired Up article about the colonization. The Phired Up article mentions that Sigma Tau Gamma is planning a future colonization at Alabama.

yes, Sig Tau is "reorganizing" their University of Illinois chapter, while they were invited to start a chapter at University of Alabama for the fall of 2012. First in the state of Alabama

What happened to the Alpha Sigma Tau colony at McDaniel in Maryland? I don't see it mentioned on their (AST's) website.

It also may be that the Panhel Advisor is only notifying advisors who are faculty or staff of the school. They might be exercising caution and/or following protocol as far as not keeping "civilians" in the loop. In this case, the easiest thing is just to ask the chapter sisters.

They may just need to update their chapter roll. I noticed that they still have their North Carolina Wesleyan chapter listed as active.

McDaniel still has AST listed on their website and the chapter has a new FB page reflecting their move from colony to chapter.

It's definitely still in existence. I believe it was installed recently, too. Sometimes it takes headquarters a little bit to update the chapter roll.

According to the College of Charleston's Greek Vine, IFC is currently in the middle of selecting the two fraternities that will join the College of Charleston’s Greek community in the next three years. The expansion committee, which is made of representatives from the IFC community, have narrowed their selection down to three fraternities: Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, and Phi Delta Theta. The three fraternities’ presentations will be on March 20th, 22nd, and 27th. After the presentations, the expansion committee will make its final decision on which two of the three will be invited to join the College of Charleston campus in the next three years.
