In theory, but they are still different institutions. AEPhi actually HAD a chapter at Columbia with a different chapter designation (Gamma) after the Alpha chapter closed. And what would happen if Barnard opened for expansion after AEPhi or AOII 'recolonized' their Alpha chapters at Columbia?

There was also the mention of Alpha Phi. It was mentioned that if chosen, Columbia would be the recolonization of the Mu chapter - which is not true. Alpha Phi's chapter at Columbia (according to Irish Pipe's recruitment thread) was Zeta Chi, chartered in 1984. Just like the Theta chapter at Columbia was Epsilon Upsilon, not the Alpha Zeta chapter that was a Barnard from 1898 to 1915.

Personally, unless the school no longer exists (or merged with another institution completely such as Sophie Newcombe College with Tulane), Alpha chapters should be maintained at the original school. BUT that is up to the individual organization if the situation arises.

For what it is worth, I was (sort of) kidding about the two moving their Alpha charters.

Which gets back to my original comment - based on my then understanding that Barnard did not allow sororities - it would be a nice "homage to Barnard", if Alpha Epsilon Phi and Alpha Omicron Pi were selected at Columbia. For Alpha Epsilon Phi it would be a re-charter of their Gamma chapter. For Alpha Omicron Pi, a new charter.

Now if this happens...

... screw Columbia and re-charter the Alpha chapters at Barnard. ;)

Since these sorority chapters include women from all three colleges at Columbia University (Columbia, Fu, and Barnard), I would love to see those Alpha chapters come back under their original names. Of course, it's up to them! But in my eyes, it's the undergrad membership that counts, so the present NPC chapters are just as much Barnard chapters as Columbia chapters.

Is Ole Miss going to be the next SEC school to begin the expansion process?

Chi Omega has decided to withdraw from the colonization process at NKU (Northern Kentucky University). Tomorrow was to be Pref parties.

Maybe there turned out to be not enough interest for another group? Wonder how this will affect the other group coming in 2014.

This might sound like a crappy thing for me to say -- but what if the girls who turned out weren't exactly Chi Omega material?

I apologize. There was no connection with my post and the link. I posted the link as an FYI and a confirmation of madoug's post.

Perhaps they just didn't meet a quota?? I remember when Sigma Kappa colonized here the reps said they wanted to get a good 120 girls. They got about that much, then 30 left/dropped afterwards. They recently did informal and got back up to 120.

I assume if they did not meet their goals, they might have taken less. If they were way off, perhaps they wouldn't have stayed at all.

A sorority backed out of the colonization process at Mississippi State 7-8 years ago.

That would be my hunch.

Based on the assessment of a PMN that I am close to, my guess would be not enough quality candidates. That makes me sad though because this girl would be an asset to any chapter and I was looking forward to her being a Chi-O. I also thought that Chi-O would raise the profile of the NPC at NKU. It is a rising university both in academics and going to D-1 athletics.
Shameful that the hopes of many PMN's were raised and they are left adrift.
