Miss America 2019

Amazingly, the first sorority woman competing in Miss America 2019 is a sorority sister of Miss America 2018. They are both Kappa Delta members from the Brown University chapter.

Here's the list and names will be added as state winners are chosen.

Pretty wild!

Now it will be even wilder if she were to win. Sorority sisters from same chapter have won in the past...in 1957 Lynda Lee Mead, a Chi Omega at Ole Miss, won Miss America. She crowned her sorority sister, Mary Ann Mobley, as Miss American 1958.

After that happened, it was reported that the pageant "banned" the same state winning back-to-back as there apparently was a lot of backlash from other state organizations about that happening. Not sure if that was true, but you never saw the same state win back-to-back until about 10-15 years ago when Oklahoma gals won back to back.

As a native Rhode Islander, it thrills me that she's actually from Rhode Island. Sometimes with states that are less popular for pageants women who live there for school will choose to represent them (which is perfectly allowed) but it is nice to feel like I can relate to her.

I have a couple friends from that Brown chapter doing amazing things so I'm not surprised there!

You have that backwards, NYCMS. Mary Ann Mobley won first. Lynda Lee Mead won the next year.

You're right - my bad! As a native Mississippian I should have known that.

Either way, it was a back-to-back win by sorority sisters from the same chapter and same state. I don't think that's ever happened again (from the same state, yes but not same sorority/chapter).

With the addition of Miss Hawaii, three of the four women who have been named state winners are sorority women. https://wp.me/P20I1i-5tU

Also, Miss America 2018, Cara Mund, a Kappa Delta and P.E.O., was in attendance at the convention of the North Dakota State Chapter of P.E.O. As a high school student, she won a STAR scholarship from P.E.O. and later became a member of organization.

Major changes will be made to the Miss America competition this year. The swimsuit and evening gown portions will be scrapped and contestants will no longer be judged on their physical appearances. Gretchen Carlson announced these changes on Good Morning America this morning.

Yes. Another Gamma Pi sister is one of the 5 finalists, and the outgoing Miss Georgia is a Gamma Pi Zeta.
