Ivy League Philanthropy Event - Fun Time

If the Cornell Daily Sun's April 16 article is reasonably accurate, it looks like a sorority philanthropy event in the Ivy League doesn't have to be stuffy at all.

Story:

Ordinarily, GCers bemoan the lack of coverage of Greek philanthropy. In this case a little less coverage might have been preferable (unless you're Ms Robbins and writing a sequel, of course). :)

I am horrified.
I find the continual references to alcohol and to sexual activity to be demeaning to women and to the Panhellenic system....

I agree. Reading the quotes from the host (??) of the show.. he should be ashamed. And so should those girls, for putting up with that.

Not Impressed.

PlymouthDZ, just to clarify about the host -- it wasn't a "he," it was a "she." And I think, from the listing of sisters in the "Sisterhood" section of the web site of that Cornell chapter, that she's a member of the sorority -- but I can't be positive of that, since it's possible for two people to have the same name.

This whole event is very embarrassing. I wonder how the St. Jude's folks would feel if they knew that's how money was being raised in their name.

I did mean she, sorry.. typo! :D

Oh, I am agahst, they mentioned alcohol!:(

Maybe it was tounge in cheek, da? Maybe in bad taste, but who sits in judgement, someone on GC saying Oh No, This is not right! Was there any bad press for Tri-Delta for putting on one heck of a show for a Great Cause!

Who has spoken in front of a large audiuence and not made a slip or two?

Tom, I guess it's possible that the repeated mentions of alcohol could have been tongue in cheek. However, the location of the event -- the Bear Lodge -- might suggest otherwise, since if you do Interet searches of businesses and entertainment options in Ithaca it appears on list after list of bars or bars and lounges. Maybe those listings are out of date and it is no longer a bar (I mean, after all, selling alcohol to affluent college students is probably not a solid type of business and maybe they went into something else :) ). Or maybe the Bear Lodge name is also used by a non-bar establishment. If it IS a bar, that is truly odd, unless a special exception was made, because Tri Delta's policies -- on their national website in the "Collegiate Corner" section say:

"No alcoholic beverages shall be served at any philanthropic events sponsored by the chapter, and as such, these events may not be held in a tavern or bar."

http://www.deltadeltadelta.org/collcorner/collcorner

(This isn't just some form of Tri Delta weirdness; many other sororities have similar policies.)

As for the various sexual comments and jokes that were reported in the story, there seemed to be too many of them for those to be just slips of the tongue. One, maybe; lots, I doubt it.

But I do agree that the money raised is going to a good cause!
