USC Loses Leading Sigma Kappa Educator and Dean
 

The University of Southern California has lost one of the most highly respected and beloved members of the Trojan family. Joan Metcalf Schaefer passed away in early September at 95. "Dean Joan" served as Dean of Women at the university from 1955 to 1992. She empowered and encouraged women to succeed in fields with few opportunities for females at the time. Students valued her as friend, counselor and mentor.

Dean Schaefer, in her later years, endowed merit scholarships at the USC Dornsife School of Letters, Arts and Sciences. She was a long supporter of the university's USC/Cambridge program. A garden at Cambridge University is named in her honor.

Joan Schaefer, Sigma Kappa, was initiated at the Miami of Ohio chapter.

It was a privilege to know this remarkable woman as a student and a role model. She was not only an exceptional person, but also a supporter of Greek life. Her passing is a loss to Sigma Kappa and to the university community she served nearly all her life.
