Lehigh University sorority banned over scavenger hunt

Quote:

A Pennsylvania university has kicked a sorority off campus due to what officials are calling a "reprehensible" scavenger hunt that involved drugs, alcohol and sexual activity.

Alpha Chi Omega's Theta Chi chapter lost its recognition by Lehigh University for two years and will be banned from campus through May 2020.
I know there aren't a lot of details at this point, but they only lost recognition for two years? I'm interested in reading this story as it develops and more information is provided.

I found a link for part of the list online, and I'm surprised the national org didn't also vote to suspend the chapter. Especially if, as the Lehigh Greeks blog mentions, this has been an annual tradition the entire chapter leadership has endorsed and the Greek office doesn't trust that they won't continue it.

I found this article which mentions the same.

It also states the following, which speaks to my original question:

Quote:

Alpha Chi Omega's Theta Chi chapter has lost its Lehigh campus recognition for two years, starting March 5 of this year until May 31, 2020.
......
By the time the sorority can resume operations at Lehigh, all of the current members, who are aware of the tradition, will have graduated, which was intentional, the university notes.
Do they not have any freshmen in the chapter? I guess it's possible if there is deferred recruitment, no one was initiated yet this semester, and any new members were released.

Lehigh does have recruitment in January, but those NMs (who were released) will still be juniors (rising Seniors) at the end of May 2020. Why would they not suspend until 2021, so everyone would have graduated and no former AXO NMs could talk about it?

And not everyone graduates in four years, so some initiated sisters could still be on campus. It's certainly surprising that they wouldn't suspend the chapter for at least three years.

I’m guessing the school and national sorority know that if they pull the charter or suspend them for longer, an underground group will spring up that they’ll be unable to control.

This is why we can't have fun things. :(

The chapter did not participate in January's recruitment.

This opinion piece published in the school newspaper -- written prior to the outcome of the University disciplinary process -- received extensive reader comments and was ultimately quoted in the sanctions outcome"

I think when you start throwing the words “morally questionable” into the mix, you complicate things more than you should. Just say it’s dangerous and be done with it. Being forced to drink beyond one’s limits is dangerous. Being forced to consume illegal drugs is dangerous. Being forced to engage in sexual activity with someone you know nothing about is dangerous, not because “good girls don’t” but because you could be put at risk for an STI.

Ugh, this is beyond crappy. I agree with other posters in being surprised at the short suspension term. IMO it needs to be at least four years so the “old guard” isn’t around to influence a fledgling colony.

Oh. So this is why we can't do scavenger hunts.
