A PNW recruitment

Just because I was in Seattle with my niece as she went through rush, I’ll write this up as soon as I have time because I’m out of the country!

We arrived in Seattle with a nice breeze following us, my husband had been on campus with my son as he went through rush and had stayed until he was called to take DD3 to Arizona. Grandma and I were going up to see yet another of her grandchildren go through rush. Were we excited? Yes, getting out of the heat and enjoying the beauty of the PNW was on both of our lists. I’d never seen houses like they had at UDub before we got there and they were glorious! There were so many that just fit into the splendor of Washington, DD3 wanted to be with her brother, DS5, and I’d be goshdarned if they decided to stay close to home, transfer, and attend USC when Washington was so close and beautiful.

Next up: The Houses!

I'm glad you have so many children going through recruitment--I love reading their stories! Looking forward to hearing your niece's story. Safe travels!

Thank you!!!
I have all the kids out of the house now and for the first time, I’m an empty nester! I thought that I’d be sick of rush but I’m thinking of becoming an advisor or a rush consultant! I never get sick of rush week!

MSKKG 09-18-2018 01:46 PM

It's one of my favorite times, too. God knew what He was doing when He gave me boys though--not sure I could have lived through a daughter's recruitment!!! Enjoy your empty nest--it makes those times when your babies visit that much sweeter.

I’m not used to an empty nest! I may have to get golden retrievers or go back to school! Looks like it’s time to become more involved in Tri Delta!

MSKKG 09-18-2018 01:58 PM

HAHAHA!!! It does get easier, but Golden Retrievers are not a bad idea! PUPPY LOVE! I'm sure getting involved as an alumna for Tri Delta would be fun for you as well as being rewarding. I have thoroughly enjoyed all my Kappa positions, both with the local chapter, my Alumnae Association, and nationally.

Recruitment at Ole Miss starts on the 23rd (Bid Day on the 30th). My one and only rec I wrote this year is for a family friend who will be going through. My Kappa cousin's grandniece is also going through (she already had a Kappa rec through my Kappa cousin). Fingers crossed that both young ladies have a successful and happy recruitment!

I have 7 biological children, I think it’s time to adopt 7 golden retriever puppies to fill that gap in my heart, on a different note, I got my first request for a Rec letter today!

MSKKG 09-18-2018 02:07 PM

Sounds about right to me! Babies and puppies--nothing better!!!

How exciting for you to be able to write your first rec! You may not have enough information to write a complete recruitment story, but please keep us posted on your PNM's result.

A word:
My niece is like DD4. She’s stubborn, she knows what she wants, her mother (husband’s brother’s ex-wife) was an Alpha Phi back in the day and Niece decided that it was Alpha Phi or nothing. “Okay, have fun with that one.” was Grandma’s response. I worried the entire rush week for her and waited for her to come to a miraculous conclusion. Did she? No. Did she make it work for herself? Yes.

Emerald
Seattle
Music Scene
Nirvana
Ferry
Puget Sound
Chihuly
Space Needle
Native American Art
Cherry Blossoms
Coffee
Art studios
Black eyeliner
Birkenstocks
Pumpkin Spice
Fall breeze
Pike’s Place
Starbucks

Emerald:
The first house that Niece went to. I was a huge fan of emerald because I happen to love their philanthropy, did Niece like their philanthropy? No. Did she like their physical house? No. She told Grandma and I that the house looked like it had “refurbished barnwood doors”, we didn’t know what to say to that one and so we had to go out under the cover of night to see these doors. They were not unusual doors but the house was very beautiful.

jolene 09-18-2018 02:35 PM

Can't wait to hear grandma's commentary. :D

GreekOne 09-18-2018 02:46 PM

Love your stories. Who else wishes that TriDDDeltgirl had 17 kids?? :)

On another note, I got 2 kittens when my twins left home. Two Goldens would be a good call!

AlphaXi_Husky 09-18-2018 03:36 PM

Yay, a UW recruitment story! Can't wait to hear where your niece ended up.

And I'm dying at the refurbished barn door comment.

AmoXO 09-18-2018 06:07 PM

Yes, another story from you!!!! DD's class has a horrid cold going around -- and I caught it --but this makes me feel better.

I am laughing about the doors. Refurbished barn doors are so PNW.

So Joanna Gaines! Sorry. I love Fixer Upper.

TriDDDeltgirl 09-18-2018 08:15 PM

Seattle:
Seattle was a last choice for Niece. She did not like this house. She did not like that this house wasn’t fancy and that the girls didn’t make an effort to be fancy. She also didn’t like that Seattle seemed to have a list of PNMs that they already liked and treated differently.

Music Scene:
Her mother’s house. She was determined to be a Music Scene. In Niece’s own words “I’ve wanted to be a Music Scene since the day I was conceived.”, imagine her surprise when she realized that chapters of sororities differ and that she wasn’t as huge of a Music Scene fan as she thought she’d be.

Nirvana:
DD3’s sorority. DD3 is deadset on transferring to UW after winter break so she can be in a different climate and be with DS5. As a result, Niece decided that she hated Nirvana and told us that she didn’t want to make it seem like she was copying DD3. Niece also made it very clear that Nirvana was not popular on campus and wasn’t a big deal. “Okay.” Grandma replied.

Ferry:
A lovely house with a strong history. She wasted no time in telling us exactly how she felt about Ferry. She thought that Ferry would be the perfect fit for her. “They’re hot and blonde! I’d be the perfect fit!” was her response to why she liked Ferry.

Puget Sound:
The exact same impressions were made on her and so she decided that, like Ferry, Puget Sound deserved to be on her top 8 list.

Chihuly:
DD4’s house. Niece loved this house because she gets along great with DD4 and wants to be DD4. Chihuly was perfect, she loved Chihuly. She gave us every bit of information that she’d gathered and seemed to absolutely love Chihuly, would it last? Only time would tell.

Space Needle:
She hated space needle and told us so. While their philanthropy is controversial, Grandma tried to encourage Niece to just go and enjoy herself but she already had a soured view of them.

Native American Art:
Hated this house as well. She didn’t like how the Greek letters fell in line and she didn’t like how the girls seemed “bottom tier”.

Cherry Blossoms:
One of the houses in her top 8. She loved them but had no reasons to.

Coffee:
She didn’t like the house because of the Greek letters. She thought that they were ugly. Grandma rolled her eyes so hard that I thought they’d never go back to normal.

Art studios:
Another on the top 8 in case she wanted to transfer to Bama where they’re a “hot blonde” house. Did she like the girls at UW? No. But she said that she’d pretend to so she’d be welcomed at Bama.

Was "Music Scene" supposed to be called "Grunge Music"?

Black eyeliner:
Niece flat out informed Grandma that she didn’t like this house because there were too many women of Asian descent. Grandma flat out informed Niece that there was too much of her bad attitude in the room.

Birkenstocks:
My house. Apparently the girls of Tri Delta aren’t up to par and our sorority is boring. “Okay.” was my response, Grandma didn’t even bother

Pumpkin spice:
The “horse girls of the row”, apparently they’re a house full of misfits who only got into Pumpkin Spice because they were needed to make quota. Since Pumpkin Spice is a top house at Bama, Niece decided to love them.

Fall Breeze:
The last of her top 8 houses and a top house at Bama. She didn’t like the fact that this house was also supposedly bottom tier but she liked that it was top at Bama. Grandma nudged me and told me to be sure to not tell Niece that DD4 hated being so far from home at Bama.

Pike’s Place:
She didn’t like Pike’s Place. At all. She treated us all to a long list of why she didn’t like them. DD4 and her outrageous demands came to my mind.

Starbucks:
She didn’t like this house on a local or national level and was sure to inform us that her feelings towards them were less than the best.

After the longest day, I thought I’d go on a nice double date with my husband. I got my letters off and my makeup on and decided that since I could see the Space Needle from our apartment, Grandma and I could walk it. What a mistake. I ended up carrying my heels and shuffling along with my feet wrapped in plastic bags. It felt like we’d walked a million miles in the dark.

We got to the Space Needle and sat down, as soon as I sat down, I got a phone call from DS4, “Mom, I don’t know how to get checked in, will you come get me?”, he was all the way in Oregon and the odds of me leaving Seattle were slim to none, he then asked me to use my google maps to help him get to his dorm again. Did I do it? Yes. Date night was cut short as I received yet another call from DS5 who needed help navigating the wild lands of HJGreek.

Starring:

I am going to throw out the suggestion for Tina Fey as TriDDDeltgirl because I see a real comedian in this role.

Love her!!! She'd be great!! I was imagining Sandra Bullock from Blind Side.

Of course, TriDDDeltgirl better get busy on the screen play or our casting decisions will be for nothing. Now that she's an empty nester, she has LOADS of time!! :-)

honeychile 09-19-2018 01:49 PM

I was going to make a snarky comment on the Greek Letters not lining up, but remembered in time that, as a 16 year old PNM, I was only interested in sororities with a mostly Greek letters. I'll give her a pass and enjoy the rest!

Titchou 09-19-2018 02:34 PM

And as a 17 year old PNM I was only interested in ones that had interesting symbols for their badges...crescent moon, key, lyre, anchor, etc. Killed me to decline invite to Pi Phi because I loved the arrow but my cousin was in the chapter and I couldn't stand her.

ForeverRoses 09-19-2018 02:56 PM

I tried to cut a sorority because they didn't give each other paddles, just these wood cut outs in the shape of their badge. When it was time to pick the houses to go back to (pre- RFM), I dropped what I thought was that house. It wasn't. there were three sororities with only 2 letters and I had them all mixed up.
sometimes I'd like to go back to 19 yr old me and shake her.

TriDDDeltgirl 09-19-2018 03:36 PM

Round Two

The houses:
Seattle
Ferry
Puget Sound
Music Scene
Black Eyeliner
Art Studios
Coffee
Cherry Blossoms
Native American Art

Niece was furious. She’d taken hard cuts and didn’t know why. She had some of the houses back that she thought she liked but she wouldn’t tell us why she had gotten dropped by so many houses. She told DD4 though and DD4 told us. Niece had gone into Nirvana and told the ladies there that she didn’t like their sorority and that she didn’t plan on joining, when they attempted to talk with her, she continued to say rude things. She also did this at Birkenstocks.

I wasn’t too mad, her actions didn’t reflect on anyone but herself, she’d been dropped from Birkenstocks and Nirvana, true colors had been shown and they hadn’t been appreciated. Grandma was furious. I’d never seen her so angry before, she paced back and forth, ranting in a heavy Texan accent, after around an hour of this I finally had to say “Listen, honey, I can’t understand you.” and move the subject on.

This isn’t a bad attitude, this is racism. I hope this story is fake, because the UW Greek Community is better off without women with these attitudes.

I feel TriDDDeltgirl is using this to illustrate how pigheaded her niece is/was.

ZTA72 09-22-2018 08:58 PM

I am/was very taken by these threads. However, some of the comments by the PNMs have made me wonder. I would love a conclusion to this one.

Unfortunately it’s not fake, it’s the result of being raised in Deep Texas and having problems with other races and nationalities when confronted with people who are different than you or different than the image that you’ve always expected Greek life to be (or the houses at SMU, USC, or any of the other heavily southern houses where diversity isn’t shown)

When I have a moment to update this, I will. I’m leaving Mexico to head to Belize.

I was raised in Deep Texas. The high schools were majorly multiracial.

aggieAXO 09-23-2018 10:37 PM

I was also raised in “deep”Texas and really find this troubling. What type of people are we raising to think like this? What type of parenting is being done? I am not a parent, don’t want to be, but I feel if my child acted this way her hiney would be red as a beet.
