The thread on helping smaller GLOs made me realize that very few of us know about the national/regional social sororities who are not of the NPC.

Here is a partial listing of non-NPC, recruitment-based social sororities that are (inter)national/regional. Please let me know of others, so I can add their info to the list. (Since I am not as familiar with the non-NPC, intake-based social sororities, I hope someone will post a thread on them too - some info can be found on this older thread -

I'm really impressed with these girls - there is a chapter on my campus, and while it is definitely not something I would ever be interested in (it's not really my religion), I have to give them respect. They are really hardcore. (If sometimes a little harsh toward 'the rest of us', lol.) Check out their chapter website: http://www.gtadx.org/

This is another non-NPC national that GT has on campus: Alpha Omega Epsilon - a professional and social engineering sorority. They have 21 chapters and colonies. http://www.aoesorority.org/

There's also Sigma Alpha, a national agricultural sorority. According to the website, they have 60 chapters.

Iota Beta Chi is a social sorority for Halifax area universities (all of Dalhousie's GLOs are open to students who attend Halifax universities, I believe. I know that AGD is open to all the schools (Dal, St. Mary's, Mount St. Vincent)). Their Beta chapter is at the University of New Brunswick

Kappa Beta Gamma was an NPC member for several years but withdrew due to the loss of several chapters. They were founded originally as a sorority for Catholic women. At present, they are trying to grow the sorority in order to rejoin NPC.

From Kappa Beta Gamma's website...
"Currently, Kappa Beta Gamma is actively looking to increase its numbers to become Pan-Hellenic affiliated. The sorority is recruiting both inactive and new chapters to expand our sorority's ideals and provide more leadership opportunities for women."

This is the one of the reasons why I asked my question about "pan-hellenic" vs. "panhellenic" usage.

These groups would not be part of this list becase they are professional fraternities/sororities, and so like service fraternities/sororities are co-ed.

From my understanding, groups like Sigma Alpha Iota Sorority and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity had to drop the references to "professional" to receive exemption from Title IX. There are other threads where Phi Mu Alpha brothers explain this whole Title IX thing, but basically after Title IX there is not such thing as a "professional and social" fraternity/sorority. A group is either a social and exempt from Title IX, or a professional and co-ed.

Sigma Alpha is not coed, at least not according to their website.

Same for Alpha Omega Epsilon. According to their website - "Alpha Omega Epsilon is a professional and social sorority composed of female engineering students and alumnae."

Some professional fraternities/sororities may not always advertise that they are co-ed. But legally, they must allow both female and male members due to Title IX.

ETA: A member of Sigma Alpha confirmed that they do allow both female and male members.

From info on the internet, Phi Kappa Pi (Clionian Sorority) was founded in 1872 at Geneseo State Normal School and had 7 chapters in NY. Clionian Sorority dissolved nationally in 1954, when all fraternal organizations in the SUNY system were forced to go local. Two chapters of the old Clionian Sorority still exist today (at SUNY-Geneseo and at SUNY-Postdam), but they have never become re-affliated.
