COLUMBIA, Mo. — The University of Missouri and its Greek student leaders have suspended all fraternity activity after a student was found unresponsive after a frat party.

Police responded during the early hours Wednesday to the Phi Gamma Delta house about reports the freshman had been found unresponsive and taken to University Hospital, the university said in a letter to campus.

KMIZ reports the student was believed to have alcohol poisoning.
.....
The university and the fraternity’s national organization have now temporarily suspended the local chapter of Phi Gamma Delta, also known as FIJI.

I’m sure students will all stop consuming alcohol if there are no fraternity parties. 🙄🙄🙄

We say that, and it's true, but not the full story. College-aged students will drink to fit in, to loosen up, to impress(?) the opposite sex, etc. Few will drink just to drink. Eliminate the social pressures, and a significant portion of the drinking goes away.

But it is absolutely correct that fraternities are not the only - and perhaps not even the major - source of said social pressure.

Eh. It’s not necessary college but the age group.

I grew up in a working class area where a lot of people didn’t go to college at all. When I was 19 or so I’d go home in the weekends and hang out with the non college crowd...and we would do the same stupid things that people were doing on campus in terms of drinking and partying.

Same with the military. AIT was like a big college experience on the weekends with Army 5 days a week.

I’m on r/army and the stories people have about what the 18-21 year old soldiers assigned to them get into on the weekends...yeah. It’s not just college, or just fraternities.

The young man is now home with his parents; but, he's blind and cannot speak or walk. Lawsuits have been filed.

Looking at various groups on the Mizzou campus, excluding the death at FIJI, a lot of other groups have similar discipline issues. I question the judgment of any national group which would continue to maintain a presence at a campus where the drinking culture is so clearly out of control.
