LIU Post: sorority question

In the Greek Life section of the Long Island University/Post website seven sororities are listed. Then there is a note that says, "Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority and Phi Sigma Sigma are not recognized student organizations. Students who affiliate/join these organizations in anyway violate LIU Post policy."

What's the story?

Sounds like they were kicked off campus but still operate underground.

Can someone show me where exactly in the LIU Post's policies it prohibits associating with unrecognized organizations? I must be looking in the wrong place.

I found this from H.R. 6 which Clinton signed in '98:
SEC. 112. <<NOTE: 20 USC 1011a.>> PROTECTION OF STUDENT SPEECH AND ASSOCIATION RIGHTS.

"(a) Protection of Rights.--It is the sense of Congress that no student attending an institution of higher education on a full- or part- time basis should, on the basis of participation in protected speech or protected association, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination or official sanction under any education program, activity, or division of the institution directly or indirectly receiving financial assistance under this Act, whether or not such program, activity, or division is sponsored or officially sanctioned by the institution." and

"(2) Protected association.--The term `protected association' means the joining, assembling, and residing with others that is protected under the first and 14th amendments to the Constitution, or would be protected if the institution of higher education involved were subject to those amendments."

Page six of the student handbook talks about unrecognized organizations-I imagine that there's no actual policy against it. The website is from 2015 and looks to be student run, so I don't think that should be interpreted as the end-all be-all information about their community.

I also find it amusing that the photos of Greek life include students wearing the letters of some of the many organizations removed from campus.

I'm not aware of any group or students conducting themselves as underground DPhiE on that campus.

I am very familiar with the panhellenic situation at LIU Post. I am happy to answer questions via PM.

So as long as they're behaving ON campus, on what grounds can any public university dictate how or with whom a student spends her spare time OFF campus?

Legally they can't. But unless you have the money and time to fight them, and a willingness to know it will (as they say) go down on your permanent record, they will probably win.

Clarion pulled this shit. The students involved were ed majors - their careers would have been scuttled before they began. They didn't have the money or time to fight it. That's why it's important for everyone to fight against this sort of thing all the time, because often those affected cannot.

But considering the website is from 2014 and there are two new NPC sororites that aren't listed, I would take this admonishment with a grain of salt.
