Barack Obama Pledged at UIU
Another thread put out the question if Barack Obama was a nupe.
No, Barack Obama is not a nupe. He recently became an honorary member of a different fraternity. http://www.uiu.edu/general/news/Alpha%20Nu%20Omega.html |

To my knowledge, members of Alpha Nu Omega are allowed to pledge NPHC organizations. (But most don't)
I'd gladly welcome clarification from members. |
Also, after reading the article, I feel like this borderline jeopardizes their tax-exempt status.

There appears to be more than one Alpha Nu Omega Fraternity and the one here doesn't seem to be affiliated with either one. Barack got duped. :D

WHEW!
That makes me feel better..... Upper Iowa University (which I'd never heard of before today) seems to have only local orgs. In an interesting coincidence, there is an org there with Digamma in the name! http://www.uiu.edu/current_students/...nizations.html |

I noticed that there are several organizations named Alpha Nu Omega.
http://www.alphanuomega.org/ http://alphanuomega.net/ http://stuser.mcdaniel.edu/ANO/index2.htm The one that Barack Obama became a member of does not seem to be any of the ones listed above. At first I thought that the fraternity he pledged at UIU was the predominantly black Christian fraternity (www.alphanuomega.org), but that wasn't founded until November 3, 1988 and according to their website does not have a chapter at UIU. In the article they mention that Dr. Doug McReynolds is their advisor. Looking on his website (http://www.uiu.edu/~liberalarts/mcreynoldsd.htm), Alpha Nu Omega is referred to as a "predominantly African American", which means that it is not the other two organizations mentioned above (http://alphanuomega.net/) nor (http://stuser.mcdaniel.edu/ANO/index2.htm). Therefore, the Alpha Nu Omega Fraternity at UIU seems to be a local organization. I agree with ladygreek's third statement. |
