Fraternity size
What are the largest fraternities in the world, both by members and by chapters?
|
Hi Tank,
I believe Tau Kappa Epsilon is one of the largest Fraternities. Why do you ask? |
As of 1996:
TKE 285 Sig Ep 259 Lambda Chi 225 Sigma Chi 223 Sigma Nu 215 SAE 200 Kappa Sig 197 Phi Delta Theta 184 |
Its not the size that counts, its how you use it. LXA has like highest avg. chapter size. and we have the record for chapters installed to active chapters. 100 out of 100 in 1950 and were above 90% for a long time after that. Word.

Latest information that I know of...
This information was taken from the most recent edition (2002) of Son of the Stars the pledge manual for Beta Theta Pi. It was current probably as of the end of the 2001-2002 academic year. Obviously the numbers have inevitably gone up slightly but again it is very current. I apologize right now for the difficulty in reading this, but previous posts of this material hasn't accepted formating either. see this list on another post.
The fraternity with the most chapters is Tau Kappa Epsilon with 279. The fraternity with the most members is Sigma Alpha Epsilon at about 248,000 members. Largest sorority based on both chapters and members is Chi Omega with 174 chapters and about 225,000 members. I'm not even going to try to figure out most members per chapter...sorry OPrime. uh oh
uh oh
when you mention the "large chapters...distal brotherhood/sisterhood"...you're opening a can of worms  |
Personally thugh, coming from a larger fraternity I have to say that our last Grand Chapter (national convention) was one of the best times I've ever had. Imagine a huge hotel filled with primarily your brothers... Going out on the town in Toronto and at every bar or club you step into there are your brothers from somewhere accross the country. Hell of an experience. I know smaller groups have conventions but they couldn't possibly be on the same scale.

I think that Pi Kapp Raider was referring to local chapter size, not national presence. As you know, there has a been a lot of debate on Greekchat about whether or not chapter size matters. As far as nationals go, I personally think the bigger the better. |
He said by both members and chapters... That 215 looks about right for our chapter #'s that are active (although we have 272 chapters over history).. I know that we do have over 200,000 initiates though... 195K was a few years ago.

May I just say how AWESOME it is that Beta gives its pledges all that info? This goes with the other thread where we were talking about sororities needing to do more NPC education. The numbers may not be dead on perfect, but at least they're an estimate and you can get familiar with the names.

Thanks for the great info on NIC/NPC groups, Betarulz! Really interesting. I'm curious, if you know: are the membership numbers for the various groups total initiates or living initiates?
As for non-NIC/NPC groups, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (which is a social fraternity but is not a member of the NIC . . . yet, at least) currently has 202 active chapters, five colonies, 104,600 living initiates, and over 200,000 initiates since 1898. What info does anyone have about other non-NIC/NPC groups? |

Very good question. I went to www.delts.org, and it lists 139, 492 total initiates, of which 106,786 are living. So, it sounds like Beta's numbers may be a couple of years out of date (but still worthwhile for the sake of this discussion) -- and probably total initiates. |

This is TOTAL initiates, as I know that Beta's numbers are a very close approximation. Of course these numbers are only a snapshot of the member fraternities and are already technically out of date. Beta's number of chapters actually changed the day I bought my new edition of the manual. Two colonies recieved their charters that day. |
