A Tale of Two Rushees

So begins the tale of two rushees.

Rushee A (my daughter) and Rushee B (her best friend since 2nd grade). Freshmen rushing at the same college with 8 GLOs.

Rushee A: Val. of her high school, First semester of college was rocky- lots of homesickness and boyfriend issues, but they are resolved now. First semester GPA: 2.94
Rushee B: 3.4 High school GPA, First semester college GPA: 4.0
Both girls have tons of h.s. activities and a few college ones.

Rushee A: Recs to 5 of the 8- (no PiPhi chapter, so no legacy status)
Rushee B: No recs, but a legacy to one, though it is not (at the moment) her favorite

Rushee A: No incriminating facebook pictures- (thanks to her older sister who has warned her about this)
Rushee B: Way too many pictures of herself doing shots, etc on the facebook!

Both girls have similar looks, similar personalities and interests. They have decided to not compare notes until it is over, but have promised to relay their experience to me! They are both really excited and Iam excited for them!
Hope it is a successful week for both.
Next post will be tomorrow night!

Good luck to both!!!

Question:
If Rushee B is a legacy to a chapter, why doesn't she have recs to at least that chapter?

i'm sure you don't want to give out the school name but where is this school geographically and how competitive is spring recruitment?

FSUZeta 01-24-2006 03:27 PM

best of luck to both girls. can't wait for updates!

how exciting for having a 2 for 1 recruitment thread! good luck to both women!

I encouraged Rushee #2 to get recs, she chose to take the advice of the recruitment counselor who said they aren't necessary, even though this is a southern school. Also, she has friends who are in sororities already and they (sophomores) told her "Oh we want you in our sorority" or stuff like that. I'm sure since the friends have not been through rush on the other side yet, they did not know that they shouldn't say that, and that it is really not up to them alone to get their friends in. She also told her mother not to get recs to the legacy sorority because she didn't want to be in it. Also a mistake as far as I am concerned, but she's not my kid. It will be interesting though to compare their experiences.

I'm looking forward to updates.

The updates should be fun. Good-luck to them both!

Day one is over and both girls are exhausted, but said the time flew by. The first part of the day they each went to 4 houses, then lunch and in the afternoon visited the remaining 4. Both have told me the ones they like and they are really excited about the same ones. There are two that neither one liked at all. One of them is #2's legacy sorority. Neither felt a connection there and the conversation was strained. Comments were made about how well organized the entire day was, down to the second. Tomorrow they get invites back- can't wait to see how it turns out.

I was a legacy and I didn't have a rec to that sorority because I (stupidly :p) believed the rush handbook that specifically said recs were not necessary. That made me think it would be gauche if I got one. I wish they wouldn't tell people that when it's obviously not true.

I really hope everything goes the way they desire!

Both girls were cut heavily. Rushee #2 has dropped out, Rushee #1 is invited back to two and will attend those today, but is diasppointed that she did not get more invites.

xo_kathy 01-26-2006 09:12 AM

Aww, too bad for Rushee #2! :(

As for your daughter, there could be tons of reasons for the cuts as you know - the grades may have been an issue, who knows. But hopefully she will enjoy her time at the houses she has left and come out happy in the end.

Good luck to her (and you for having to be the mom in this stressful time!)

AlphaFrog 01-26-2006 09:21 AM

We've seen it before, as in Rushee #2's case, that legacies sometimes get cut very heavily from other houses, assuming they'll go to their legacy chapter and not wanting to "waste" the spot on them. This could have been a posibility.

I'm glad your daughter is sticking with it!:)

I got cut from (what I thought was my) #1 right before pref, but (it's trite, I know, but it's true) I ended up where I belonged.

It doesn't feel great going home after the 3rd party, when 80% of the other girls have a 4th to go to, but you can still find your home!;)
