We had a girl come through formal recruitment a few years ago that many of us really liked. We have deferred recruitment, and I'd met her the previous semester at a Panhellenic open event- she was a very nice girl, a little edgier than most of the girls who go greek on my campus, but she was funny and unique and easy to get along with. She'd been having great conversations with sisters throughout the week and came back for pref. Our campus isn't overly competitive in recruitment, but most PNMs take pref very seriously, and as it is an evening pref in January, usually wear black or dark dresses. Well, this PNM walks in the door and all heads turn- she is wearing a bright yellow strapless satin dress that probably totaled about two feet in length. She wasn't an unattractive girl but the dress was far too small for her and she wasn't wearing underwear, so in addition to far too much cleavage spilling over the top of her dress, she looked ready to bust out at any minute and her behind was just barely covered. Poor wardrobe choices happen, and aside from a few raised eyebrows, my sisters went about as usual.
When we reached the ceremony part of our pref, we were doing a slightly new pref which involved a short public pref of each PNM before we broke of to do private pref. I was preffing a girl during that party, so I was standing along one wall with the other sisters who were preffing (our PNMs were standing in front of us). When her turn came, the sister preffing Yellow Dress led her into the center of the room, so the sister was facing us with her back to the sisters who weren't preffing. I couldn't see the PNM's face, but about halfway through her pref, she reached down to apparently scratch an itch on her upper thigh. Apparently this involved shifting her (already dangerously short) dress upward, and I watched the faces of my sisters turn to horror as they saw much more of a view than they were bargaining for. All the PNMs were facing them, so most of them recovered quickly, but most of the chapter dissolved into laughter 15 minutes later when the PNMs left, Yellow Dress merrily waving goodbye. Please know that there was no cruel judgement on the part of my sisters (lord knows there are girls in every chapter that could use a lesson on tasteful clothing) but the money shot right in the middle of pref was a bit much to handle. This PNM ended up pledging another chapter, but dropped a few weeks into her pledge period. I see her out sometimes and she is usually highly intoxicated but very friendly! |

LOL. Well, I can not believe that with 6 daughters and 1 son who are Greek, not a one has a story to tell about a weird PNM. I think I'll ask some of their friends.

That yellow satin dress sounds really pretty given the right body and undergarments.

I do have a strange story that isn't from rush but expansion, but if you're looking for awkwardness, it fits the bill.
When I was an advisor, the Panhellenic was expanding by matching up two locals with nationals. There were presentations by five sororities, and each of the existing NPC chapters had an alumna and a collegiate vote. Before one of the presentations, I was looking at the displays, along with the collegiate member from my chapter (I'll call her L), and a friend of hers from another sorority, when an alumna of the presenting group approached us and noticed our pins. "Are those your boyfriends' fraternity pins?" she asked. L told her politely that they were our sorority pins, that we were from Kappa Delta and Sigma Delta Tau. "Oh," said the alumna, "then you're from the locals?" |

If not, I'm hoping the alum was either really old or really young, or from a really small and isolated school. I mean I know that many of my chapter sisters (from our small isolated school) wouldn't have known (or still know) some of the sorority names...but an alumna chosen as a representative for a presentation should have her isht together. |

we had to learn all the badges plus the pledge pins when i was a pledge and we had a test on it. of course, that was back in the day..........
|
The KD pledge manual (as 'twas called back then) had thumbnail profiles of all of the other NPC organizations. I don't think we were tested on the specifics, but just reading about all of the other sororities was fascinating to someone from a school with just a couple of them.
I guess something I learned from even a small part in expansion is that you need to have all your ducks in a row: brief your alumnae about the situation before the presentation and also make sure that your information is accurate. (That was another weirdness: one group had some obviously incorrect info in their literature.) |

I mean, most of our expansion team peeps are pretty young alumnae and I think they're pretty knowledgable, but you never know. |

We also had thumbnail sketches of all the NPC groups (and a list of all the NIC groups with founding dates) in our pledge manual. I bitched a whole bunch when they were taken out. |

Here's one... (sorry so long, but I promise.. it's worth it!)
While I was a recruitment advisor, we had this girl come out for recruitment. On this campus, there is only informal recruitment, so this PNM decided to only came to our events. Everyone could immediately tell that she was a little... out there. She came to event after event, and she had a cast on one foot. We eventually started calling her (Crazy) Cast Girl. The one recruitment event, I wore a lettered shirt, and the material of the letters had the Patriots logo all over it. I understood that I lived in PA, and EVERYONE was a Steelers fan where I was, but you gotta represent the team! However, I didn't make it a point to tell everyone that the Steelers sucked (unless provoked, of course!)... but this girl did. And of course, even though there are many teams to like, this girl loved the Pats. She saw my shirt and immediately ran over to me, and started gushing about how much she loved my shirt (in an embarrassing way) and then went on and on about how much the Steelers, and their fans, suck. And she had to have known that she was in a room filled with them. That semester, she didn't receive a bid. However, she told everyone that she did and that SHE turned US down. And of course... ...she came out for recruitment again the next semester. For those of you who have read the recruitment story I posted, you know that we have a Recruitment kick-off in the spring for one night, where PNMs are required to visit all three sororities. And there was Cast Girl... being weird as usual. With only three sororities, word travels VERY quickly, and before the night was over, we already knew what had happened with Cast Girl while she was with the other chapters. Apparently, she had started a verbal fight with one of the sisters of another chapter, AND with another PNM. Awesome. Because most recruitment events are open to anyone, she kept coming. After one of our events, a sister pulled me aside and said, "I don't know if we can do anything about this, but... she has our letters written on her cast, and there's no way I want it to look like she's one of us when she isn't." *Oh, and by the way... this was a different cast than the previous semester (I believe she had a few surgeries, or something), and the new cast was green. She told us she got a green one because of AST. Awesome* Anyway... I tell the sister that I understand her frustration, but that we should figure out how to handle it in a mature way before doing anything irrational about it. One of the other sisters, after having heard about this, stepped in and said she didn't want her wearing our letters, so she said she'd talk to her about it (in a polite way, which she did). Cast girl said she understood, that her friend actually wrote it on there  and that she'd scribble over it. Well, she did... she scribbled right over the "AΣT", and wrote in "AST" Needless to say, she didn't receive a bid that semester, either. |

I had several weird things that happened to me during rush last year.
The house I was at is sadly stereotyped as being a house that only gets "fat girls" to pledge (which isn't true at all). At this house, we were watching a skit that was based on the Legally Blonde musical and a girl was singing a song that had a line in it like "This dress is just my size!" As soon as she sang this, one girl stood up (we were sitting on bleachers) and yelled out "YEAH! HUGE!" and walked out of the house. We were all shocked. I'm pretty sure she didn't get a bid anywhere because we had to attend every rush party in order to participate in the next day and since she walked out, she forfeited that next day. Our Panhellenic council did an AWFUL job about informing us what rush infractions really were. There was just a small disclaimer in the back of the Pan booklet. We didn't understand many of the terms like "hotboxing," but since so little space was devoted to the subject and since no one ever talked about it at our assemblies, everyone assumed that the houses must pretty much played by the rules. We were so wrong. At one house, I had 5 girls talking to only me at the same time for the ENTIRE party. I was SUPER intimidated, but figured that stuff like that was just normal. At another house, the girl who was rushing me pulled me over a bleacher step and I ended up falling on top of her. Then, she led me over to some of her sisters to talk, and I had 4 girls talking to me at once. They kept getting closer and closer and I ended up being backed into a closet. I couldn't wait to get out of there. Also, almost every single house said "See you tomorrow!" as you were leaving. Probably the worst story comes from about 12 of my sisters' experiences. They all had this certain house on day 3 and pref night. On day 3, they took a picture with the girl who was rushing them. On pref night, these pictures were printed and put in picture frames. The girl who was rushing them would pick up the picture they had taken, sit down, start crying, and say things like, "I can't wait for you to be a XYZ!" "I want you to be my Little!" "You are going to be such a good XYZ!" "I can't wait to hang out with you on Bid Day!" etc. This made the rushees very emotional and so excited to be XYZs. But they were cut that night and left to pledge their second choice. So many of my sisters had the EXACT same story about this and were so upset about it. When we started going through rush training was when we realized how wrong this stuff was. We were outraged, but figured that it was too late to tell our Panhellenic Council what had happened. I really wish that they would stop this dirty rushing on our campus and stop doing things that can really hurt, intimidate, and embarrass rushees. I think there was a reason that I ended up pledging the only sorority that committed no rush infractions that year. |
Your story was amusing until you got to the super bitchy last sentence. You might want to edit it as it makes you and your chapter look rather bitter and holier-than-thou.

(yes, I am talking about the C word) :p |
This doesn't have to do with rush, but when I was narrowing down which college to attend this fall, I went to several Open Houses for the schools I was seriously considering. At one of them, part of the Greek Life info session had a tour of one of the school's houses, with a bunch of actives there just talking about who they are and what they do, talking to girls who might go through rush next year, showing people around the house, etc.
Well, most people were there with their parents, and one of the couples were taking pictures of like the entire house AND the actives and making their daughter take pictures with them saying things like "Pose with your future sisters!" etc. They were so over the top! It was kind of bizarre... |
Weird! Maybe she was a legacy to that chapter? Odd regardless!
|
Still! My mom was a member of a sorority at that school, and I'm under the impression that it's fairly competitive. She was appalled. Haha. The actual sisters seemed so uncomfortable.

Or the parents might just be ignorant about greek life, and think a sorority is like a club where all you have to do to join is sign up. "Wouldn't it be great if our little girl signed up for XYZ sorority? Then she'd get to call all these nice young women her sisters!"
Was the daughter as into it as her parents were, or was she rolling her eyes and giving off a "mom, dad, would you PLEASE cut it out?" vibe? Either way, the story has no doubt gotten around to all the chapters there, so if she did choose to go to school there, she's gonna have a tough time with recruitment. |
Maybe I'm way off base here, but I would think that if the girl comes through recruitment, and takes the president or recruitment chair aside and apologizes for her parents' behavior ("I am so sorry for that scene at Open House. My parents are great, and well-intentioned, but sometimes they go sort of overboard" - eyeroll - "but anyway, I hope you won't hold their camera obsession against me. Now, I have a question about your philanthropy. Do you actually get to work at the Special Olympics, or do you just raise money for it (or some other innocuous question)"
Everyone that age understands that even the best parent can be embarrassing sometimes, and as long as the daughter disassociates herself from the behavior without demeaning them, I'll bet people would be willing to cut her some slack. But I may be naive.... |
My friend is an orientation leader and told me a very sad story. On the 2nd day of orientation all of the schools clubs put on a sort of clubs and organization fair.
A girl who African american (of color, back, i dont know what the PC term is right now.) girl came up to the panhellenic table and was asking questions. One of the rho gammas goes "oh no honey you want that table" and pointed to her to NPHC table. Great job picking those Rho Gammas this year vpm (i'm not bitter or anything hahaha). |

ETA: Giving the benefit of the doubt - could her questions have been things like "When do you guys take your first line of the year?" or "Can I do the step-show if I'm just a pledge?". (PS, I suck at coming up with NPHC questions, but you get the idea...) |

I wish but I know the Rho Gamma and its not that surprising. :( I know that the OL talked to the girl (the PNM) and the panhellenic VP was informed. |
