Embarassing Rush Stories
Now that recruitment is over for now, does anyone have any embarassing recruitment/new member period stories that happened to them, recently or in the past? I have one...

I was at the preference party for XYZ sorority. They have a particular thing that they do that requires them whispering in your ear. Well, I had no clue this is what she was going to be doing. Me, being a wannabe at that time, thought she was coming in for the double cheek kiss! I KISSED THIS GIRL! I'm sure she looked at me like "She's HITTING ON ME TO GET A BID!!" I still laugh my ass of to this day when I tell this story. I'm laughing now because I still CANNOT BELIEVE I DID THAT! I thought I was this hot shot, fitting into society "upper crust", little did I know I'd end up looking like a freak!!!LOL!!!

My only embarrassing story (probably more embarrassing to me than anyone else) is from being at another org's pref party. There were about 75 of us crammed into a suite, and I was wearing a very heavy sweater over a tank-top dress. I was sweating already - then the CANDLES came out. Imagine a small suite with 75 girls holding candles. Yuck! I think I had to wash my friend's sweater 3 times to get it un-sweatied.

For another org's pref we had to drop a pearl in a bowl of water. I didn't know the bowl had water in it, so I put my hand in the bowl so it wouldn't bounce out. Drip, drip, drip. OOOOOPS.

carnation 10-09-2000 09:03 PM

Well, in an old yearbook there's a really great picture of me as a rushee--I was scratching my nose as I walked into the Theta house but this shot--taken from above--makes me look like I'm holding my nose.

dc1 10-10-2000 11:58 AM

sigmagirl, that is too funny! I do stupid things like that ALL THE TIME! It's taught (somehow this word doesn't look right to me today) me to laugh at myself!

Thanks for the fun post! I needed it today!

juniorgrrl 10-10-2000 01:47 PM

One of the stories that got passed around my Rho Chi group when I went through rush was this:

Kappa serves frozen coffee at their Philanthropy party called Kappacino. And one of the sisteres supposedly said to a rushee "Do you like the coffee?" and the rushee replied "Yes! It tastes like ice cream!" Or so she thought. Apparently somewhere in the message "ice cream" got said or interpreted as "ass." The Kappa sister looked at the girl funny and I don't think she got invited back to KKG.

Q-T Pie 10-10-2000 04:30 PM

LOL I'm laughing with you carnation..These stories are great

carnation 10-10-2000 07:39 PM

Ohmygosh, I started thinking about Sigmagrrl kissing that sorority girl and I started to laugh until I had tears pouring down my face!!My non-Greek husband didn't understand what I was gasping out to him and when they heard it, my teenaged girls were in the floor too. I think this will stay in the family lore for a long time, especially when each of them goes through rush!!!

kappagirl00 10-10-2000 07:58 PM

During the first round of rush, I was a little tense, and at one of the houses I was squeezing my lemonade cup so hard that it went flying and lemonade went EVERYWHERE! It got on me, AND on their couch (Luckily I didn't spill on the girl I was talking to.) Anyway, I left the house just KNOWING I'd get cut. But I didn't! And I'm in that sorority now. So some humiliating rush stories do have happy endings.

Microbiomajor 10-11-2000 12:55 AM

Okay...this happened to one of my sisters this year, and I still crack up thinking about it! We were all wearing white t-shirts for our first rounds, and one of my sisters went up to a group of sisters. (we have 50 women in the suite, and only about 20 prospectives going through each party, so sometimes small groups stand together so we don't overwhelm the guests...anyway)She wrapped her arms around one of them and exclaimed "I am sweating like a beast!" only to discover that the woman was a guest wearing a white shirt and talking to a couple of sisters! The woman never came back to second rounds...we'll always wonder!

AXO Alum 10-11-2000 10:47 PM

Great topic, sigmagrrl! I was at work when I read yours and was in the floor - so of course I had to show others! That is too funny! Here's mine:

During rush on skit night, XYZ did a whole Hee Haw theme complete with hay and a big wagon - Really cute right? Well the sister who was rushing a girl would sit with the girl during the skit - they also served refreshments. Well they brought me a little croissant on a plate with some mustard (which I thought - okay...mustard and a croissant - but I figured why not). I mentioned that I was starving to my "rusher" just as I took a bite out of the croissant. As I was biting she said - oh yeah and the little sausage in the croissant is delicious. Well I am a very strict vegetarian so as I'm biting I hear this and immediately dropped the bite out of my mouth onto the plate!!! I really do have manners - but I just freaked because I really cannot stand the taste of meat after all these years! The poor girl just stared like "okay -etiquette class wouldn't help this one!" It was sooo funny (at least it is now looking back). I mean imagine a child at a fancy restaurant where her parents are trying to be all prim & proper and all of a sudden the child just lets food roll out of her mouth (in typical child "I don't like this yucky stuff" fashion).....too funny!

I knew I was dropping the group that night anyway since I had to make my 2 choices for pref, but I do wonder what would have happened if I had selected them! Let's hear some more - these are great!

"Alpha Chi Omega - If you only had 2 wishes, what would your second one be?"

lifesaver 10-17-2000 09:56 PM

Mind if a guy joins in?

I transfered to my present chapter, so this all happened where I was initiated. Anyway - Here's my story.

I got to college as a freshman, during the few days between dorm move in and the start of classes there wasn't much to do. Anyway, my older sister had just graduated from the same university a few months earlier. Her fiance, Phil was finishing up his senior year, and was a Sigma Chi. I always planned to be a Sigma Chi, because my father was a Sigma Chi. (I met the sigma Chi's and we just didn't hit it off. I totally respect them though. My dad was one of their national officers way back when. (think I didn't get in trouble when I signed with another house?)

Rush at my school was really different, since there were only a few fraternities, each house would throw a big party one night and all greeks would show up to it and so there was 4 days of non-stop parties (ah, those were the days...) anyway, the first just happend to be this one house that I never even heard of. But since I was the tag-along to Phil, I was going whereever he went. (I totally knew NO ONE else on campus and was hating it).

So we go to this first house's party and it seemed really cool but I had the typical media stereotypes in my head of fraternities. I also figures that these guys would be able to tell I was a Sigma Chi legacy and since I was there with Sigma Chi's, they'd want to kick my ass. (I don't know why I thought this, but I did). There were a ton of people there, and a few of the brothers even made eye contact with me, which of course, terified me. I couldn't tear myself from the side of Phil.

Well, I had to go piss. So I made sure no brothers were looking, and darted to the pisser. I am standing there tasking care of buisness and three of the biggest SOB's walk in to the pisser. They were all bothers, and the ones who'd been trying to talk to me all night while I was running around this party trying not to get my ass kicked. Well I was in there by myself, and was completely sure i was about to get my ass done in. the biggest of the guys says, "Hey, we've been trying to get to you all night." in a really mean voice.

I think I said, "ndhijrtjot skrkwkrk!" But who the hell knows. I totally figured I was about to get my clock cleaned. Here I was, my 2nd day at school, and I was going to die. So I decided to suck it up and go down fightin'.

I blurted out, "F**K Ya'll, I can take all three of ya'll on."

There was nothing but silence.

I didn't get hit. I looked around and these guys had the strangest look on their face. The big one says, "Um, we wanted to come say hi and introduce ourselves, I'm Jon, this is Kenneth and he's Brian. Are you having a good time?"

I felt like a total JACKASS!

These guys were really cool, and believe it or not two weeks later they bidded me and years and years later, I am still a proud brother of the house.

The crazy thing is that the big SOB, Jon, ended up being my big brother.

And don't yall know they still remind me of that night EVERY ALUMNI FUNCTION WE HAVE.

My 2 centavos.

What was the story? I went to the website and there were a BUNCH of stories to pick from

X girl

IowaHawkeye 10-20-2000 01:45 AM

Its the same story Lifesaver just posted.. i just first read it at under the greek stories list.. i think he's posted a bunch of stories on there though.... all very funny :-) I'm not sure of the names though.. Lifesaver?

lifesaver 10-20-2000 01:29 PM

I'd never heard of the site, I visited it and it has some funny stuff. I have told my story over and over numerous times since initiation, and that was several years ago, so maybe a brother put it up there for me or something. Can you post a link to the exact story, or remember the title of the story? I surfed around the greek section, but couldn't find anything. Please advise.

PS I am glad everyone enjoyed the story. I felt like such an ass when it happened. The other part I forgot to mention is that 1 year later, the other big SOB, Kenneth, married my sister. Six years later they are expecting their first child! I am excited. So one of my brothers became my brother-in-law. Wild huh? I never would have thought that the guy who I thought wanted to kick my ass would be family!

Okay, I have a silly- "otherside (Rusher)" sorta story...I was in the middle of a Rush Party with this girl and we were talking about something and while I was talking to her I noticed on her face- I really did...or at least I thought I did...that there was the letters "Chi" "Omega" on her face. I know it sounds weird, not to be mean but her skin was blotchy around her cheeks and it to me the blotchiness looked like the shape of XO. Well to make matters worse I gasped really loud when I noticed it and she was like "Whats wrong?" She saw that I was looking directly at her face. I just blurted out what I thought I saw..."I said You have a Chi Omega on your face." She was like "what?" I tried to get myself out of that one but it was really hard. Luckily, that party ended soon and we cut her that night I think- I wouldn't blame her if she would have cut us. But that is one of my silly doings. Oopsy

During a pref party (they're called Inspirationals here, as a lot of things are done differently) I had to go up and drop a pearl into a bowl of water. I did that with no problem, but when I turned to go back to my place in the circle, I ran right into one of the sisters! Apparently they liked me anyway, because I am now a member!

My story isn't from Rush, it's from Bid Day but I figure that's close enough. Last year on Bid Day, we had already welcomed all the new members and we were about to welcome back the Rho Chis. Basically they go up to a microphone and say "hi, my name is...and I'm proud to be coming home to XYZ sorority" and then a bunch of sisters run over and hug her (tackle her to the ground). Well one of the sisters that I was closest to at the time was a Rho Chi so when she said her little intro, I ran over to her and gave her a huge hug! In the process, my bra snapped! When we joined our sisters, I tried to fix it because it was a front-closure bra and I figured it had just come undo...nope, it was totally broken!!! Luckily I lived nearby and could run and change before the BBQ. My sisters still tease me about that!

Oh yeah, that was me I hadn't been on here in so long that I had forgotten my user name, so I had to make up a new one.

This wasn't really funny at the time, but we laugh about it now...

My older sister went to the same college that I attend now, and on her first day of rush, she was all excited and everything, but she didn't have time to eat breakfast, which as you probably know, can make you a little dizzy. Anyway, she got into the shower and really started feeling bad, and then--BOOM! She passed out and cracked her head on the shower tile. Ouch. A few minutes later, a very nice girl in her dorm found her, got her into her bathrobe and took her to her room, got her dressed, and called 911. She went to the hospital and had to spend the rest of the day there, missing the whole first round of rush (read: the first day on our campus, you visit every single house ). Luckily, Panhel was pretty accomodating, and she got to pick up with rush the second day. And even luckier, she ended up at the perfect house for her. Whew!

AOIIalum 06-30-2002 09:29 PM

My most embarrassing recruitment (back then it was still rush though!) story was the year I was Panhellenic Rush Chair.

Every year, there's a big tent/canopy thing out in front of the greek row which was used for Rush/Recruitment Headquarters. It was overcast or getting darker outside and I was rushing across the yard to do something. Somehow, I managed to trip and rip my left leg on one of the metal tent stakes sticking out of the ground. From the spot I was in it was quickest to carry me into the side entrance for *my own chapter* to assess the injury and deal with it. I'm in a panic--forget about the nasty injury going on (the scar was about 8 inches long down my leg and it was not pleasant.) I'm panicking about being carried in to AOII by a couple of fraternity guys during Formal Rush! Then again, for once in my life I was thankful for all of the fraternity men who liked to sit on their porches and watch the week unfold :-)

So, I'm in the bathroom with various RCs, the Greek Advisor, who knows who else from U of L, and at least one of the AOII moms (who was trying to convince me to allow my parents to be called and/or go to the ER, both of which I stubbornly refused). Everyone's trying to stay quiet so not to upset anyone or alert my sisters that I'd been injured. I'm crying like a baby, my leg is a bloody mess and everyone is scurrying for suitable first aid supplies for such an injury. Of course, by the end of the night of course my entire chapter knew, as well as the other 5 sororities, all of the PNMs and most of the fraternities as well. Luckily, I healed pretty well and you can hardly see the scar 15 years later.

mmcat 06-30-2002 10:11 PM

bless your heart
that sounds like something i would do...
i'm glad all is well

ShaedyKD 07-01-2002 12:13 AM

During KD's pref party, the PNMs sit down for a long period of time, and then have to get up to leave. Well, I had been sitting in the same place, with my legs crossed, for about 1/2 hour. When it was my turn to get up, my legs were asleep and I almost fell! Needless to say, I guess the sisters laughed my klutz-iness off, and the same thing happened to one of my (future) sisters this year during prefs!

ZTAMichelle 07-05-2002 11:42 PM

I'm not engaged!!
This past Spring during Pref I was really nervous. We had a Traveling Leadership Consultant at our chapter for Recruitment weekend and if that wasn't enough stress, being Pres. I have the longest part of the Pref. ceremony to memorize. I have a candle in my hand, as every speaker does when she starts talking, and I start ,pause, take a deep breath and BLOW OUT THE CANDLE. Someone giggled and to break the tension says "Hehe are you engaged Michelle?" trying to be cool I just start over from where I was. That evening at our Bid-Party a NM asked if I was really engaged. Sadly, NO. But it was pretty funny and I think helped all of us sisters and PNMs who were so nervous and excited that day. All but one of the girls were in our NM class.

Betarulz! 07-06-2002 12:47 AM

My embarassing story is one that is still brought up my dad whenever he gets the chance.

Last year I had finally made my decision, and I went up to Nebraska for the weekend. There was a family reunion, and I was going to one final rush party with Beta, where I was fairly confidant I was going to get a bid card. My nervousness was allayed before we even left Beta when one of the brothers asked me if I was a signee or a rushee of the Rush chairs was there and said "he's not a rushee for much longer!".

Everything's great, since now I know that I'm going to get my bid card. So we get to this lake where the party was, and I decide to go tubing. Without even thinking I hop on...with my car keys in my pocket . Had a great time tubing...I even remember thinking that my keys were hurting me while I was riding, and when I got my bid card and was ready to head to my family reunion I realize that I don't have my keys...

Luckily, my parents were in Omaha for the reunion, and were kind enough to drive the near 60 miles to this lake outside of Lincoln to open my car for me. And it allowed them to sign the bid card so that it was all official, but I felt like the biggest idiot b/c the houses reputation for intelligence was one of the reasons I wanted to join so badly. Plus I had to explain to 60+ relatives why I was late, and why my parents had to leave the party for such a long time.

maggieaxid 07-08-2002 09:19 AM

i went to a second round party and they were serving cokes in old fashion glass coke bottles. well, i guess the bottles they were serving to that particular group of girls got shaken up bc when the pnm's opened them they went all over us and drenched us head to toe! i was so embarassed! luckily, after the party someone from the greek life office took some of us back to our dorm on the way to change our sticky clothes. all the other houses we went to were like "were you one of the girls that got soda that exploded all over you at the XYZ house?" it was a great conversation starter!

polarpi 09-07-2003 06:31 PM

Right now I can't think of an embarrassing moment I had through recruitment, but I know that the semester I studied abroad, the night of pref we had a PNM sitting there and our chapter advisor was there helping out with serving drinks and dessert. Well, the advisor walked over to this PNM, and promptly spilled the sparkling cider ALL over the PNM. The advisor was apologetic, the sister preffing the PNM was apologetic, and the entire chapter was sure that she would never accept a bid from us. It surprised everyone the next day to see her walk through the door as a new Alpha! :)

(We still use this story as a "What NOT to do" during recruitment! :D)

LionTamer 09-08-2003 09:38 AM

It was Labor Day weekend before Rush started (Penn State rushes late), and I was at the beach with a girlfriend. She dragged me to this really wild, awful place that was almost like a biker-bar. I was pretty much trapped there for most of the afternoon and entertained myself watching the a large group of lifeguards misbehave.

One of the first rush parties I attended that week was ASA. As the girls came out to greet us, and one girl looked really familiar. I asked her, "hey, weren't you at the Barefoot Bar this weekend?" She got really pale. "Weren't you with the lifeguard who got up on the bar and....." She grabbed my arm hard and pulled me aside: "You and I need to to talk." So I spent most of the first round there hearing how that's not the kind of guy she usually dates and not the kind of place she usually frequents, etc. She was mortified, but pretty funny about the whole thing.

Of course, as all these stories seem to end, that's the sorority where I ended up, and as I found out later, this girl had acted as my guardian angel all through the selection process.

SigK_Bama 09-08-2003 10:49 AM

It was my sophomore year of Rush and we had just finished up with the pref party. After the ceremony part, we all mingled with the girls so we could talk to everyone we wanted to and I turned around to see one of my sisters handing off a girl to me. I had never seen her before but I recognized her name from the lists, so I said hi and started talking all nice to her. She interrupted me and asked, "Is your boyfriend so-and-so from from XYZ fraternity?" I said yes, he was. She just looked at me and said, "Oh, ok. Then you are the one he cheated on me with when we were dating." She promptly turned on her heel and walked away from me!! I just stood there with my jaw dragging the floor and the other sisters around me had the exact same expression. I wasn't sure if I should be embarrased or mad. Anyway, her name turned up on our bid list the next day and sure enough she walked through the door! When it came time for us to leave for the bid party she said she and her friend she pledged with would meet us there. Neither of them ever showed up and we never saw them again.

sueali 09-08-2003 11:36 AM

My eye had been bothering me for a couple of days. It was our philanthropy day and we were sitting at tables, I leaned down to talk to a girl and felt something in the corner of my eye. A huge thing of puss came out of my eye. I was horrified the PNM was horrified, she never came back.

ilovemyglo 09-08-2003 11:37 AM

This year I went to help our rush, and during pref myself and my grandlittle (also an alum) served drinks... so we go in to collect the garbage, and we had waited to late, the girls were lining up to do their well wishing- and we also have a GIANT badge that we use during our ceremony, well my grandlittle and I walked around the badge to be with the other alums to sing once we made it safely past the giant badge just fell and made a very loud BOOM! It was so embarressing! I swear neither of us were touching it, but no one believed us, of course! :( So afterwards we made sure we timed it right to get in there.
Oh, did I mention it came about half a centimeter from landing on a PNM's foot?

AOTTAdvisor 09-08-2003 11:45 AM

This was just kind of embarrassing because we looked dumb......
AOTT's philanthopy is Juvenile Arthritis Research and last year, we got this GREAT video about a camp(called Camp Esperanza) for kids with arthritis and all the things they get to do at this camp, etc etc. We played the video on our philanthropy day and because arthritis research is sometimes a hard topic to get excited about, we REALLY talked it up--how awesome the camp was, how much the kids got out of it, how we couldn't wait to go volunteer there, etc. Sadly, we found out at party#2, from a PNM that Camp Esperanza NO LONGER EXSISTED(the video was a few years old) and that even when it did, it was a rotating disease camp(ie, one year heart disease, the next year cancer), so even if we had been able to volunteer, it would not have been arthritis research only about one year every 6 or 7. Needless to say, we stopped talking about the volunteer trips we were taking there for the next 2 parties. We felt REALLY dumb!!

AOIIforever 09-08-2003 12:00 PM

Well this wasn't emabarrassing to me but I'm sure it was to the girl. I was a Rho Gamma this year, and after the second day of parties (3rd day of recruitment mind you, including kickoff), another rho gamma told all of us about a girl in her group who asked her when they were going to visit the 'rho gamma sorority'.... Well needless to say it was the running joke for the rest of the week. I mean come on...

ROTFL! I LOVE sigmagrrl's and lifesaver's stories!

ISUKappa 07-30-2004 09:53 AM

I didn't have the best rush experience. I was kind of clueless and me, being from a small town, thought I would be really cool and mature during the parties (meaning, I dressed like a 38-year-old not an 18-year-old). Well, I was cut pretty hard after 10-party-day and was only invited back to 4 houses the next day, two of which I wasn't terribly interested in.

Pi Phis were one of the first houses I went to that day (and one that I really liked) but I was so shook up and nervous that I was not really thinking about what I was saying. My rusher asked one of those "kiss-of-death" questions (one of those that can either make or break you in that house). I think it was something about how my friends would describe me or something. Anyway, I start talking and all of a sudden I find myself talking a little too enthusiastically about the PBS show Wishbone (you know the one with the little Jack Russell Terrier that reinacts classic novels) and how much I liked it and how one of my friends had gotten me the stuffed Wishbone for Christmas (it was one of those inside joke things). I couldn't stop myself! I kept talking like this show--that's geared for 8-12-year-olds--was the coolest thing since sliced cheese and blah blah. The poor girl was just sitting there and I think she was so happy to pass me off (and I think she even referenced the tv show). I left the party feeling SO stupid and knew that it was bye-bye Pi Phis. I can just imagine the things that were said about me during their selection session that night. :o

To make it worse, I was then so stressed out after that horrible conversation at Pi Phis that when I went to Kappas next, I had a mini breakdown and started crying! Oy. Luckily they were super, super sweet about it (I was a legacy though my older sister so many of the girls knew me) and made me feel tons better.

You can bet I was disappointed--but not surprised--that I was not invited back to Pi Phis for preference!

_Lisa_ 07-30-2004 11:00 AM

A few weeks before recruitment last year a girl I met at the gym saw my Sigma Kappa keychain and told me that she was rushing @ UK. I told her that I would see her there because I'd be helping out with recruitment as an alumna.

On the first day of rush I notice her as she comes in and her tongue is so swollen that she can't shut her mouth! Turns out she had her tongue pierced a few days before, hadn't realized that it would still be swollen, and even worse-somehow got it infected!

I remember when I got my tongue pierced and I can't imagine how awful her day must've been considering she had to visit 13 houses and there is an awful lot of talking involved! Unfortunately I didn't see her the rest of the week and its really a shame because she was a terribly sweet girl.
