Statue of a Phi Mu

A statue of Jerrie Mock, a Phi Mu, was recently unveiled at the airport in Columbus Ohio. She was the first woman to accomplish several flying records, including female to solo around the world. I think her plane is in the Smithsonian. Interestingly, she is alive (not many statues of the living) in Florida. Does Phi Mu headquarters give her much recognition?

Yes. Phi Mu is very proud of sister Jerrie Mock!

I definitely have heard of her in my time as a Phi Mu.

An update on this post: Jerrie passed away on October 2nd.

From the Phi Mu Facebook page:

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock who passed away peacefully at her home in Quincy, Fla. on Tuesday. Jerrie was initiated into the Upsilon Chapter of Phi Mu at The Ohio State University in 1944. In 1964, Jerrie, then a full-time mother of three, piloted the Spirit of Columbus, becoming the first woman to fly solo around the globe! We are grateful that Jerrie shared her stories, always modestly, with Phi Mu so we could celebrate her accomplishments. Photos of Jerrie and details of her historic flight are on display at Phi Mu’s National Headquarters in Peachtree City, Ga. and also at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

I always found it interesting she lived in Quincy, Florida as that is the home of one of our founders.
