Sorority movies

...

ToriAGD-GE 05-14-2000 01:01 AM

ok, this movie isn't about a sorority but its the closest thing I could think of. During Rush it was brought to my attention that the movie "Steel Magnolias" was well of course first based on a book, and the book was based on the true life story of a Phi Mu. If you look at the bulletin board in her room, you can see Phi Mu letters of some sort. and if you notice her wedding is in all pink, with pink carnations, which is the flower and color of Phi Mu.
That was as helpful as I can be!
(my best friend is a Phi Mu, if you can tell)

I saw this movie of the week thing on NBC a couple of summers ago.I think it was called Dying to Belong. It was a sororities are bad and they haze kind of movie, but it was funny becuase it is SO untrue. I don't know how to get a copy, but i wouldn't mind seeing it again. Does anybody here know where I can find this movie?

AXO Alum 06-19-2000 10:29 PM

Oh yeah...I forgot about the critically acclaimed "Dying to Belong" with that reject Sixx girl from Blossom! That was SO STUPID! It was so bad that every chapter on my campus sent letters (individual and collective) to NBC (I think that's right) to try and get them to show something positive! Of course no one wants to hear that - we're all just a bunch of drunks who want to be with a different frat boy every night http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I agree - A League of Their Own - was about as close to a true sorority as ever...think about the players - some were beautiful, some weren't, some were wild, some reserved, some were leaders, some were followers! And even though they played for "rival" teams, they supported a common cause! I absolutely LOVED that movie. I wish they would present Greeks in the positive light for a change!

Wow, I never really considered a League of Their Own as a good rep of sorority life -- but it really is! I'll have to watch it again now that it was mentioned.

You know, I never realized "A League of Our Own" is a depiction of the way sororities should be! There's gotta be at least one movie out there (even if it's a small, independently-made film) which portrays sororities in a positive light. The movies that come to my imagination (the aforementioned bad pledge movie, "Animal House", "School Daze", etc.) all portray Greeks as hard drinkers, hazers, elitists, etc.
One movie does come to mind, though--it's not really about a sorority so much as it is about the college climate in Alabama during the 1950's--"Heart of Dixie", with Ally Sheedy. She's a sorority member who works against segregation, and how her activism gets her in trouble with her sorority and school. I think it's based on some woman's life story, but maybe not--it could just be based on actual events that happened to more than one person.
Even though I'm not a film major, I may have to change my major so I can make a decent sorority film!

“Heart of Dixie” was based on a book called “Heartbreak Hotel” by Anne Rivers Siddons (who is a Tri-Delt alum). She wrote another book called “Outer Banks” which was about 4 sorority sisters reuniting after 25 years. It flashed back to their time in college also. The whole time my mom was reading it she was asking me things like “What’s a legacy?”

Speaking of Animal House, it was on this weekend. Have you ever noticed the Omegas’ (the mean nasty fraternity) crest looks like a Sigma Chi crest?!?! I wonder if that was intentional?

Everyone gives Animal House a bad rap, but you have to remember that at the time (in 1978) campuses were just getting over dealing with Vietnam and going back to fraternities seemed like something carefree and positive, toga parties included. I’ve also read statistics that Greek membership went up something like 60% as a result of that movie.

Another good movie to consider, which shows both fraternity and sorority highlights (serenading, candle passes, etc...) is Fraternity Row. It's hard to find, though - I last saw it on HBO three years ago and taped it. Although the story has a very sad ending (consequences of hazing and refusal to accept positive change) - the movie is a good one, showing greek life in the early 60's setting. Good funny moments as well.

This is my first time on this....those were some great movie selections! I never thought of some of those before! We had a movie night and all our Blockbuster had was "Sority House Massacre 4" Very, very bad!! We got it thinking it probably makes fun of sororities, so we thought it would be funny, but man, you would think it was a soft porn! I don't know about your sororities, but ours never changes together and then walks through the house half naked!

AlphaChiGirl 06-20-2000 02:26 PM

I totally love "Animal House", but my friends who are anti-Greek constantly used it as an example of why I shouldn't rush...so, it gives a negative opinion of the Greek system to some people (also, I have friends who go to Dartmouth, so their opinion of the movie is somewhat colored!).

Also, does anyone know the name of the book "Steel Magnolias" was based upon? I thought it was based upon a play, and not a book.

There was a movie on TV recently, I think it's called "Now & Then." It's about 4 girls who grow up best friends during the 60's...Rosie O'Donnell and Demi Moore are in it, I believe. I didn't get to see it all the way through, but what I saw was awesome. These girls were more than friends, they were sisters.

I don't know if it's uplifting, but the most true to sorority life movie I've seen is Fraternity Row. It's an older movie that's on HBO once every blue moon.

MOCHA 06-20-2000 11:15 PM

I saw Fraternity Row on HBO in April 2000. I heard that the movie was based on true events. Is this true?

Rhoyal Blue_22 06-20-2000 11:44 PM

There is a movie called "School Daze." This movie is based on and about a historically black college and the stereotypes, adversities and issues that arise between black greek letter organizations and college life, overall. Although you sound like a white sorority-no offense http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif, it's a good movie to watch if you want to compare it to other sorority movies http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Yes it is true. There is a book, Broken Pledges by Hank Neuwer, and he makes reference to the movie. I have seen the movie also. I've also seen Animal house(one of my favorites), and School Daze by Spike Lee.

Local Sororities, I really can't think of one positive movie that is specifically about sororities. I think the 'league their own' is a good suggestion.
