Alumnae Involvement: What are you doing now?

I just wanted to see what the different alumnae on GC are involved with at their GLOs.

That, and I'm bored at home sick from my job and am bored.

Are you active in your alumnae chapter?
Are you an advisor?
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp?
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer?
Are you a national officer of some sort?
Something else?

Alumiyum 09-15-2010 04:40 PM

I'm not active in a chapter yet because I badly need to focus on my academics so that I can get to the "real world" asap. Right now I pay dues, help with recruitment, and help with any other event if they need it. I'm on the same campus I graduated from, and because that was only a year ago I still know at least half the chapter and can be around to help when they need it.

I would love to be an adviser one day, but my organization stipulates being out 5 years to advise your own chapter and 3 for another, so I don't qualify yet anyway, and can't take on other commitments until I get out of school.

DrPhil 09-15-2010 04:45 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yes.
Are you an advisor? HELL TO THE NAWWWW.
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? What's that? If it has to do with an alumnae chapter house, we do not have a house. Some NPHC alumnae/alumni/graduate chapters have houses.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No.
Are you a national officer of some sort? No.
Something else? Committees and membership intake.

LucyKKG 09-15-2010 04:53 PM

I just started my term as Secretary for my alumnae association. :) I'm on House Board for a local chapter (not my own), but I'm really not crazy about it. I know they need the help, so I'll stay on for the time being.

I was recently asked to advise for a position that means a lot to me, and I'm about 80% sure I'll do it. I have to talk to the woman who asked me to get more details and ask a few questions. I should know in the next couple of weeks.

RaggedyAnn 09-15-2010 04:54 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? yes
Are you an advisor? no
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? no
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? no
Are you a national officer of some sort? no
Something else?
I am currently serving on both a National and a District team. I am also on my university's Greek Alumni Advisory Board as the ASA rep.

UHDEEGEE 09-15-2010 05:17 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yes, I'm currently the president of my area's group. I've was also one of the founding members & first president of an alumnae group in our city that is geared toward our working members.
Are you an advisor? Not now, but I've served as Pledge Advisor & Advisory Board Chairman.
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Not now, but served on this board for 2 years right out of college.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No
Are you a national officer of some sort? No
Something else?
Vice President of our city's Foundation Board.

Xylochick216 09-15-2010 05:20 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? There isn't one anywhere near me. We're working on getting one here.

Are you an advisor? Yes

Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? There's not one around here.

Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No

Are you a national officer of some sort? I'm a national volunteer

Something else? I attended a conference about young alumnae involvement a few years ago. It was very motivating, but being in an area with one small chapter that doesn't really want outside help, it's been hard to stay involved. I advise for a chapter 2 hours away and would love to do more. I'm always asking for more to do!

I guess it's my turn.

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Not right now, but I wish I had time.
Are you an advisor? No.
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Nope.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? I guess this is what you could call me. I support several chapters in my region in terms of recruitment, accreditation, chapter ops, you name it.
Are you a national officer? No. I think I've found my place in the big picture of Sigma so I'll stick to where I am.
Something else? I also do some work with our publications dept.

AOIIalum 09-15-2010 07:31 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? I'm a dues paying member to two alumnae chapters (one local, one about three hours away), and am as involved as my life allows!

Are you an advisor? Not now, but have previously held multiple advising positions including Chapter Adviser.

Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Not now, but have previously served as a (Housing) Corporation President. The stories I could tell, and probably already told here, about that experience. I also helped with the last revision of our AOII Corporation Manual.

Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? I'm currently serving as a Network Specialist-Recruitment for Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Toronto. I work with all areas of Recruitment, Public Relations, Panhellenic and of course Ritual. Before my current position, I served as a Collegiate Network Specialist for 4+ years.

Are you a national officer of some sort? Nope, and that's more than fine by me because I adore what I'm doing now.

Something else? Yes, I was recently appointed as an AOII Foundation Ambassador! So excited to have this opportunity to share the amazing work our Foundation accomplishes!

LOL. I understand. Advising can be a little intense for some people. All the interaction with collegians and being so focused on them/what they're doing is not everyone's cup of tea.

IrishLake 09-15-2010 08:32 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? - Nope, I went to one event a few years ago though. Just don't have the time, but I'm still on their email list. And I still pay my yearly dues directly to nationals.
Are you an advisor? Yes! I'm the newly appointed Education and Ritual Advisor for the chapter at my Alma Mater. I haven't really done anything yet, but I need to try to get up there ASAP.
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? No, I don't even know what that is.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? Nope

When you answer my pm - can you tell me about this? Like, did the Greek alums go ahead and do it themselves or did the Greek advisor do it? We theoretically have one but no one ever hears anything about it.

Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Nope.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No.
Are you a national officer of some sort? Nyet.
Something else? I am the current president of the alumnae panhellenic.

I am in the process of trying to get a smaller alumnae chapter out here in the suburbs - I'll keep my Houston membership, but there are several alumnae out here who don't like to drive that far or who are intimidated by the size of the Houston group.

amanda6035 09-15-2010 08:47 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Well...I try to be. The alumnae association I joined regionally is heavily tied to a local chapter, which I was not a part of, so I kind of feel out of the loop on some things, but there's another sister who always remembers to invite me :)
Are you an advisor? Yes - I became the financial advisor the fall after I graduated to a nearby chapter (not my own)
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? My chapter just got a house this fall. I am a worker-bee on the committee.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? Yes - I'm on the finance team
Are you a national officer of some sort? Nope. I thought I might want that one day, but I've begun to realize that I really like working locally with chapters, so I'm not sure if that's something I'll pursue or not...
Something else? yeah. my career is fraternity and sorority specific.

Housing Corp: board responsible all things related to a chapter's house (if they have one).

LatinaAlumna 09-15-2010 10:47 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? We don't have alumnae chapters but I am active with two chapters that are local to me
Are you an advisor? No
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? We don't have a housing corp
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No
Are you a national officer of some sort? I have been in the past
Something else? I help my local chapters with fundraisers, community service projects, and provide academic workshops

DoctorD 09-15-2010 11:27 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? No - live too far away, but I try to get to a few things a year.
Are you an advisor? I was in the mid 90s for 4 years.
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Technically, any initiated sister is, but I am working with my undergraduate chapter on a special project.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? Yes - I'm a standing committee chair for the entire fraternity, so I report directly to our President and work hand in hand with IHQ staff and other volunteers on things that are directly related to my committee's charge. Prior to this role, I was a Province Director for 9 years and then served on the Ritual Committee for 2.
Are you a national officer of some sort? no
Something else? In Alpha Gam land we can be awarded the Honors of Epsilon Pi - given for faithful and continued service to the fraternity at any level. This honor is akin to a badge guard, and in fact takes the place of our chapter name guard once awarded. It starts with the Arc, which is given for 5 years of service, followed by the Arc with Diamond, Arc with Diamonds, Arc with Diamonds and Pearl, Arc with Diamonds and Pearls - each given for a minimum of 6 years service after the last Arc received [so if you wear the Arc with Diamonds and Pearls, you have been volunteering for at least 29 years]. I currently wear the Arc with Diamond, which means I have at least 11 consecutive years volunteer service since graduation [I actually have 18 years - amazing!].

Some of my dearest friends I have met through this service to the fraternity [including AGDee!] and there's no way I could have known in college that I would still be doing this now, nor how these skills that I've learned would help me in my day to day life. While I thoroughly enjoyed my collegiate years, I wouldn't trade my alumnae service for anything.

I think we've discussed this before, but I think we're essentially doing the same thing volunteer-wise (regional support kind of things). I love it.

We have and we are! This is pretty much my "dream AOII job".

AOpilicious 09-16-2010 11:30 AM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? yes, I keep our FB page up to date and I am "helping" with our luncheon. I am a past president.
Are you an advisor? was in the past. at 2 JWH chapters :D
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? no way, I am horrible with money
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? was a "team" chair for recruitment, sent to train/monitor chapters, train consultants, served on colonization teams.
Are you a national officer of some sort? no way :p
Something else?

ree-Xi 09-16-2010 11:46 AM

Q: Are you active in your alumnae chapter?
A: Yes, both. intermittently, of course, as much as my health allows. I pay dues to both, no matter how "active" I am that particular year. I attend meetings, service/philanthropy, and social events whenever possible.

Q: Are you an adviser?
A: My Gamma Sig collegiate chapter is inactive.
My Alpha Xi chapter just got a new adviser, and I hope to assist her on some level. Again, as my health allows.

Q: Are you part of a chapter's housing corp?
A: No house at my collegiate chapter, of AXiD but recently donated some items to the chapter room on campus. I was really excited to be able to give the girls some stuff that they can really use, and that will last a long time.

Q: Are you a regional/province/whatever officer?
A: No.

Q: Are you a national officer of some sort?
A: No.

groovypq 09-16-2010 12:02 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? I belong to one (i.e. pay dues), but it's an hour away and the meetings are always at 6 p.m., so I never make them. I wish I could be more active. Sort of noodling the idea of starting a chapter around here...
Are you an advisor? Yes! General adviser - and since the only other adviser is our financial adviser, my sister who's two hours away, I'm at everything!
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? No
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No
Are you a national officer of some sort? No
Something else? I am a "Key Woman" for my area - a contact point for recs.

kddani 09-16-2010 12:08 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? If we had one that actually functioned, I would be. I tried to restart it after I graduated college, but it never got off the ground, and still isn't.

Are you an advisor? Yep. I am CAB-Standards (i.e. Risk Management). I have mostly enjoyed it, because I think that the standards process has really made a difference (for the good) in several members' lives.

Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? No, we have suites.

Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No. I'm probably too much of a rabble-rouser and ask too many questions, though I am very pro-KD. And now that I have a family I don't have that kind of time and don't want to do the travel.

Are you a national officer of some sort? See last answer.

Something else?

AOEforme 09-16-2010 12:16 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yes.
Are you an advisor? Yes- Public Relations for Beta Alpha Chapter at Texas Tech.
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? No
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No
Are you a national officer of some sort? No
Something else? I just donated a bunch of fun bid day pins and funds to my undergrad chapter. :) Not a big deal, but they were cute and the girls loved them.

Fleur de Lis 09-16-2010 12:18 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yes

Are you an advisor? I have done this in the past but don't anymore

Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Yes, I don't interact with the actives much due to my role (next question) so this keeps me connected with them.

Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? Yes, I oversee alumnae associations in two states.

Are you a national officer of some sort? No

Something else? That is more than enough. :P

thetygerlily 09-16-2010 03:05 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yes, somewhat. I co-chair the evening group & help out with some of the communications (evites, contacting younger alumnae, etc). I can't attend the normal monthly meetings or most programming because they're during the workday.

Are you an advisor? Nope. I would like to at some point but just don't have the time/energy right now.

Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Nope.

Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? Nope.

Are you a national officer of some sort? Nope.

Something else?
Yep. In addition to my local alumnae association, I'm part of another association that focuses on historical preservation & knowledge sharing- especially of our badges. The Keepers of the Key group falls within this association.

AGDee 09-16-2010 04:02 PM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yes!
Are you an advisor? I was in the late 80s/early 90s-5 years
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? TI was a house association board member when I was an advisor to my collegiate chapter
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? Yes - I am an Area Coordinator, overseeing our alumnae and collegiate chapters in part of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and part of Michigan. They recently changed the number of "Areas" we have. Prior to that change, I had collegiate chapters in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New York and Massachusetts. This is my 6th year as an Area Coordinator. Before that, I was a Province Director for 6 years and served on the Finance Committee for 5 years before that. I've been around the block a few times :) I have been a continuous volunteer since January, 1988.
Are you a national officer of some sort? no
Something else? (Borrowing from Doctor D here): In Alpha Gam land we can be awarded the Honors of Epsilon Pi - given for faithful and continued service to the fraternity at any level. I currently wear the Arc with Diamonds, which means I have at least 17 consecutive years volunteer service since graduation [I actually have 22 years].

Like DoctorD, some of my closest friends are Alpha Gams from all over the country who I have become close to through the years as a volunteer. I was chatting on FB with my first college boyfriend (TKE) on Tuesday night and told him I was so glad I'd gone out with him because HE was the one who inspired me to go through rush. I told him I have no idea who I would be today and what I'd have done all these years without my Alpha Gamma Delta sisters because Alpha Gam is so tightly integrated into my life.

ADqtPiMel 09-16-2010 06:24 PM

This will be my fifth year as a recruitment advisor and I love it! I am a member of the local alumnae association as well, but am not very active since I spend so much time working with the chapter.

KSUViolet06 09-17-2010 12:19 AM

^^^Where do you advise, Mel? You're in DC right?

littleowl33 09-17-2010 01:51 AM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Soon! I just moved to a new city and I'll be attending their first event of the year this month (they take a summer hiatus). I can't wait!

Are you an advisor? No, but I'd like to be - there are two chapters in my city and even though they're very different than mine, I'd love to get involved and give back. Kappa requires that you be several years out of college and/or over 23 before you can advise, so I have a little ways to go before I'm eligible.

Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Nope.

Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No, but again, I'd like to be someday. I was super involved as an undergrad and would like to continue that as an alum as much as I am able!

Are you a national officer of some sort? Nope.

Something else? Mmm, I don't think so.

Yup. George Washington University.

kchaptergphib 09-18-2010 02:20 AM

I think I filled this out on another thread once, but I figured my info might need updating anyway...

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yup, I'm the current President. We don't to a whole lot, but try and get together at least every-other month, in addition to helping with Recruitment, Founders Day, and holding a brunch in the spring for Senior collegiates.
Are you an advisor? Yup, local university (UW-Madison) Membership Advisor.
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? I don't believe I'm a voting member (only one advisor is) but I try and attend these, too. I have been a member in the past, anyway.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? Nope
Are you a national officer of some sort? Nope
Something else? Helped establish a local Alumnae Panhellenic, and am the GPB representative to it. And, you know, overall greek nerd and greekchatter ;)

If so, I LOVE the alumnae brunch you do with the collegiates every year. It's always nice to go and see alumnae from ALL the sororities, not just mine. :)

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yes, I am VP Membership and have previously been AP a number of times
Are you an advisor? Yes, Colony Adviser
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Yes ... sort of. I am on the Corporation Services Committee
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? I was. I served as a network specialist and as a network director.

Lyrebird 09-26-2010 12:42 AM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? Yes, I'm actually a member of two alumnae groups. I'm on the board of one, and am a general member of the other.

Are you an advisor?
Yes. I'm the Philanthropy Advisor for our chapter at a nearby university.

Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? No.

Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No.

Are you a national officer of some sort? No. Maybe someday.

Something else? No.

I was surprised to find after college that the bonds of sisterhood remained so strong. I think I may be even more active as an alumna than I was as a collegian! Being the first Greek in my family, I had no idea what to expect after college.

Side note: I recently found my high school English teacher on FB and wrote and thanked her for encouraging me to go Greek. I hadn't considered it seriously before she talked with me, and now I couldn't imagine my life without it. :)

preciousjeni 09-26-2010 02:10 AM

Are you active in your alumnae chapter? No. I'm too far from the closest Graduate, Alumnae and Professional (GAP) chapter for membership to be affordable.
Are you an advisor? Yes.
Are you part of a chapter's housing corp? Don't have one.
Are you a regional/province/whatever officer? No.
Are you a national officer of some sort? I was previously and hope to be again soon.
Something else? I'm active in a number of national committees including our National Regionalization Committee that has been responsible for developing and executing the plan that went into effect during this year's convention.
