Welcome to the thread for the 2018/2019 expansions, colonies, charters, and closures.

In the interest of keeping things accurate, please site a source if you have one (FB post, website, news).

If I have made a mistake, please let me know.

Last year we had an uptick in schools opening for expansion, especially schools beginning new Greek systems. Here's hoping for another successful year of Greek Life growth and fewer chapters losing their charters.

Lambda Chi Alpha is scheduled to recolonize at William & Mary (VA) in Fall 2018. Phi Gamma Delta is supposed to be the third part of a three-organization stack at Christopher Newport University (VA) in Spring 2019, but I don't know if that is still happening or not.

Phi Kappa Tau: Add the University of Kansas(recharter) Fall'18

Per another greek interaction website, TriSig and DPhiE presented at Union College.

I heard a rumor that Phi Mu may have closed their chapter at Penn State. I checked on the Phi Mu website, and the chapter is not listed. Surely this isn't true! Just wondering...it makes me sad if it is true.

Did anyone floating the rumors indicate when this happened? I follow Onward State on Facebook, and they're usually on top of Greek chapter closings.

No, I just heard someone talking about it, and they pointed out that the chapter is no longer on the Phi Mu national site.

Just looked at that other greek website, and it says that IHQ closed them due to numbers, but they are appealing, and that it was on the Penn State Greek Parents website, whatever that is.

@shadokat, the PSU Greek Parents website is a Facebook group comprised of parents of current GLO members at PSU. It was formed after Tim Piazza's death as a forum for us to share experiences and work together to help our kids. There was a lengthy discussion about Phi Mu's situation there. My understanding is exactly as you said, they have struggled with recruitment. Their numbers were very low after the seniors graduated. Their National HQ advised them they are closing the chapter. The remaining members are trying to appeal.

The Delta Sigma Phi chapter has been closed at the University of Alabama. Closure is due to RMF.

Per the UC FSL FB page, Theta Phi Alpha also presented. No decision yet.

West Virginia University has suspended 4 fraternities. Phi Sigma Kappa and Sigma Alpha Mu have been suspended until Fall 2020. Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) and Pi Kappa Alpha have been suspended indefinitely.

Sigma Chi has closed the University of Pittsburgh(PA) chapter. Closure is due to violations of fraternity policies and failure to adhere to the pledge program.

DPhiE will be colonizing at Union College this fall, as per the announcement on Twitter.

For how long has this been in the works? I'm surprised that the fraternity would want to recharter with the current climate what it is at Penn State, and I'm equally surprised that the community would want to take on another Greek org.

Our return has been in the works for a while. We were given a return time by the FSL when our chapter closed a few years ago. There are 4 other fraternities that are eligible to return Fall’18. Single letter chapter, we still own the mansion and powerful alumni, play a significant role. I guess all eyes will be on us as we are the first fraternity to colonize post GL restructuring.

The Delta Upsilon chapter at the University of Washington has been closed due to RMF. The chapter had been on suspension since Fall 2017.

The Kappa Sigma chapter at Texas State University has declined to accept the new university rules. The chapter has withdrawn from the campus IFC and will no longer be recognized by the university. The chapter will continue to operate as an off-campus organization.

^^^ I’m always curious when a chapter moves “off campus” and is still recognized by their Hdqtrs. Does this affect their ability to get insurance since they are no longer under the guidelines of the university and its risk-mgt. guidelines?
When field reps visit chapters, the Greek advisor or dean gives them an evaluation of the chapter, their official GPA, etc. All that can be applied to their chapter standing with their Hdqtrs. including awards and scholarships. And can sororities still pair with non-recognized groups for campus events?
Maybe I’m reading too much into these situations—and I know campus guidelines are often a pain in the ass—but is cutting yourself loose a valid idea?

I think that as long as the chapter follows the risk-mgt. guidelines of their organization, they are still covered by the insurance their organization has.

It was announced today that Sigma Chi has closed the chapter at Iowa State University. The chapter was under a revitalization plan that the members failed to adhere to.

I think it also depends what the housing situation on the campus is. If the worst thing that happens is losing your suite that 10 members lived in, it’s going to be way easier to flip the school the bird than if you were giving up a 60 person gorgeous mansion.

That's a shame, they just built a new house two years ago.

The University of Arizona chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been closed due to "health and safety" reasons.

The East Carolina University(NC) of Alpha Phi has been suspended while under investigation.

Sorority Extension on Twitter says Baylor and the University of Wyoming are open for extension.

The University of Colorado-Denver has also opened for its first NPC organization.

Did the planned ZTA colony at the University of Saint Francis in Illinois never materialize? I know there were colonization efforts, but they aren't listed on the ZTA website and the colony recruitment website links to social media that doesn't exist.

Also open for expansion is the New York Institute of Technology-Old Westbury; not to be confused with the State University of New York-Old Westbury which is also open for expansion.

Delta Phi Epsilon will be colonizing at SUNY Farmingdale this fall.

XiDelt, do you have any additional information on the opportunities at the University of Wyoming? I looked up the Panhellenic and the campus has two local groups. Do you know if either of these groups is petitioning to affiliate with a national or if the expansion for a totally new group? Has the University offered housing options for a new group? The "fraternity mall" area seems like a wonderful opportunity for a group to be able to join - but is this being offered? Thanks for whatever information you have.
