that is very odd for rush. Ive never encountered anything like that during rush, interesting story though!
|
My wager on some of these girls who act completely whacked out during rush (like mute girl) is that they are only doing it because their mom/dad/boyfriend/sibling nagged them into it. They want no part of the Greek life but they don't have the balls to say so...so they sabotage themselves. Then they can go to whoever wanted them to do it and say "well I tried, but I didn't get in...oh well." Kind of like Megan on Felicity being all Gothed out and then going home to her parents wearing Laura Ashley. :D

These are getting more hysterical by the minute.
This one was quite traumatic for me. Understand that I am rather reserved when it comes to female bodily functions. I have a few words that can not be used in my presence for they will induce nausea. That said... I had a rushee that was absolutely smitten with our chapter on Philanthropy night. She gushed about how we were all so gorgeous and all so funny and nice. Ok...so I accept that as a compliment and continue with the conversation with a simple "Thank you." She then tells me about how she talked to one of my sisters who was so down to earth. For some reason we couldn't get the air on in our rush room for spirit night and it was incredibly hot the night before. So she tells me about how they were both sweating and and the rushee told my sister that she sweats a lot and sometimes she uses panty liners in the pits of her T-shirts to absorb the sweat. I think I physically shuddered at the use of that word. I was mortified for her and the situation. I just stammered "Oh. What a great idea!" All my friends know about the words they can't use around me. So when I told them not only did this rushee talk to me about her sweating problem, she said the word PANTY LINER during rush. They were hysterical and commended me for maintaining composure. Oh man! I can't believe the audacity of some of these rushees that I am reading about! |
pbpck, What school do you go to? I have a friend who is a pi phi at San Diego State and I think you are in the Southern California area. Do you go there?

HAHAHA
We had Spring Rush Workshop today, and our Recruitment Chair told us something that happened to her last Spring...
Apparently a PNM asked her if she could borrow her cell phone to call her boyfriend, and after my sister told her no, the PNM said she need to talk to her in the bathroom. The bathroom in the chapter room is divided by two parts; one with just the sinks, and another with the toilet. So anyhow the PNM takes my sister into the sink area, locks the door behind her, grabs her cell phone, shoves my sister into the toilet room & stands in front of the door so she can't get out. She calls her boyfriend while my sister is locked in the bathroom, and two other sisters had to go find a key to "rescue" her. Another story was told about a girl who wanted to go either ZTA or AXO during Formal rush, but she ended up not recieving a bid at all. She got so pissed that she threatened to BOMB (yes...BLOW UP!) the two chapter rooms!!!!! She never followed through with her threat, though. |

Ok, what about crazy stories from the rushers side? Where the sisters and not the rushees were acting nuts?
The worst thing I heard as an undergrad was a story from one of my sisters who went through rush the year after me. She walked into the first party for sorority X and the first thing the girl said to her was, "Those are really ugly shoes." BUT - worse story, thank god from after I graduated. Apparently we had a sister who thought that polite small talk at rush was a restriction on her "free speech" and so she would deliberately talk about porn and politics and anything basically that rushees don't want to hear about. Needless to say, she is no longer a member. |
This is nothing in comparison to the screwdriver-wielding psycho story, but it's all I've got. This past Rush, a girl went through, I'll call her Amy. Amy was unusual, to say the least. The very first night she managed to insult two sisters and I on three separate incidents. The first incident happened when we were asking the PNM's about themselves and their hobbies. One of the PNM's said that she played the piano, and so I said, "Oh, that's cool. My sister Jen here plays several instruments, you guys have something in common!" to which Amy replied, "Oh, how sweet! You two are both band geeks!" Mahuh? Anyway, trying to blow it off as a bad attempt at a joke, we tried to move on. I tend to talk a little fast when I'm nervous, so she told me that I sounded like I had "too much sugar and not enough sleep." Thanks. Her last slam is escaping my mind at the moment, but the next day when she came back, we were all wearing matching polo's and black pants, and she said, "Why are you all wearing matching outfits? Is this some sort of sorority ritual? Do you guys, like, sit around and watch sappy movies and cry together too? Whatever." Needless to say, Amy got cut and luckily everyone that got insulted by her were able to laugh off her comments!

I got one
I went through formal rush in the spring at my school (we had a delayed rush policy). Anywho, like some others have posted here, the rushee's make their own name tags to try and make themselves stand out. A girl who lived on my hall's last name was Virgin and she put her full name on her name tag.....well at the AGD party one of the sisters said something along the lines of " ohh, your a virgin, thats a very bold statement to make on your name tag" well she informed her that Virgin was her last name......the rusher was understandibly imbarrassed, however my hall mate and I both went AGD despite the name mishap! we still tease our sister about it

Yay!
Our Spring recruitment starts tomorrow night & I might have more funny stories to post on here. It should be interesting & fun! Yay!!!!!
|
Not that weird but sort of funny nonetheless. My old roommate rushed the fall of her freshman year. Her PX wasn't the greatest, didn't explain all the rules and pressured into signing her bid card. Turns out, she was a member of the group she had Beth sign with. So, Beth is not happy as a XYZ and depledges. She knows what house she wants and goes through rush a year later. She has to go to XYZ (mental note, same house that dirty rushed me that spring so neither one of us wanted to go back) that fall. Her PX is not a PX that year and ends up trying to rush her. Hello? Didn't she remember all the trouble? Beth was trying to be polite and just get through the round but the sister kept saying "Gosh, you would be such an awesome addition to our house". Guess that was a major brain fart on their part!
|
We have spring recruitment here at my very small school. Therefore, a lot of the women going through "know" where they are going to go. It's kind of general, and I"m sure it happens everywhere, but don't you just *love* the PNM's that wear the color of "their" sorority every event? Or when they do crafts, they do it in "their" sorority colors? Even if the girl seems like she could be a great sister, who wants a girl that tacky? Yech...
|
I had this friend who didn't want to rush, but her mom (who was a Tri-Delt) forced her to. I don't know what the mom was smoking. My friend would not have enjoyed a sorority at all - she's a very eccentric (in a good way), somewhat rebellious theater geek. She tried to get out of rush, but her mom wouldn't take no for an answer. So, my friend decides to use rush as acting experience. She goes through and pretends to be a typical perky, preppy PNM - and all 14 sororities fell for it! They had no clue what type of person she really was. On the third day of rush, she's in the Tri-Delt house and asks the girl rushing her, "what would you do if I just farted" hoping that this would get her cut. No such luck - Tri-Delt invited her back, along with every other house on that campus. She wound up dropping out of rush on the last day.

Acting has nothing to do with being fake.
|
What exactly did you mean by that? I didn't say the sorority members (or PNMs) were fake. I don't even go to the school where this girl rushed (I met her after she transferred), so I have no idea what their greek system is like.
The fact that I'm not in a GLO does not mean I'm out to attack all Greeks everywhere. |
Quote:
RockChalk - Greek or non-greek - I think you are talking out of your ass. I'm sorry you are so ignorant about what / who comprises Greek organizations. Someone who is eccentric "in a good way" and involved in theater is hardly an outcast in any GLO. Your friend actually sounds like she would have made a great addition to the organization in that respect. Having gone through rush myself, I encountered a lot of excited, enthusiastic young women - not the preppy fucktards you and your friend seem to think are the norm. Oh - and I don't buy that she said "what would you do if I farted right now" - she probably just said that to you to try to look "cool" or whatever  There is no way someone who acted rudely and like an idiot, and asked a very tacky question would get invited back to anything. Quite frankly, it's HER loss that she didn't choose to take rush seriously and it's also yours, that you dont have a clue about what the Greek System entails. |
Simmer down, y'all. I think what she meant is that this girl was not the type you'd stereotypically expect to rush; at any rate, I'm sure she didn't mean to say that sorority members are all fake and would automatically reject someone interested in theater, for example. Actually, I thought the story was pretty funny...I can see how all 14 sororities would be fooled, since each active member only gets to talk to PNMs for 15 or 30 minutes at recruitment functions. I do agree, though, that this gal should have given sororities a chance--she might have found one where she really fit in.
|
Whoa, I think ya'll are being way harsh. There are people who are great people but who don't want to be what they perceive Greek to be. Maybe Rock Chalk's friend is one of those people. That doesn't mean they are right about what Greek Life is like, at least most places. But come on, I know there are schools where an arty-looking theater type with funky clothes and a few extra piercings wouldn't even be considered by a sorority.
And yes, there are people who go through rush as a joke - and get in. I have two wonderful sisters who went through rush as freshmen with two other girls just to spoof the whole process. Guess what, they didn't get cut from rush, and while their two friends did drop out, these girls changed their minds and committed to Alpha Xi Delta. So while I can't verify any details of RockChalk's story, it's hardly as unbelievable as people seem to think it is! |

I never said that there weren't people who go through rush as a joke, - however, there is a big difference between someone going through not expecting/wanting to get in, and someone who puts on some kind of weird act and says rude things (allegedly) to the sisters who are inviting you into their houses. I don't think that's cool - either way. It's great that it worked out for you, fuzziealum, and that you have 2 great sisters now, but I don't think that they acted like asses during rush either. Either way, I don't know RockChalk from a hole in the ground - so I don't mean to make personal insults or whatever, but it really seemed like she was pulling that story out of her ass. Just my opinion! |
Oh, I'm not saying this girl took the right approach. If she really didn't want to go Greek but felt her mom was making her rush, she could have just been disinterested during all the parties rather than deliberately trying to stir up their interest. It seems mean. Or she could have just not rushed at all (and lied to her mom, or not - college is supposed to be the start of independence).
All I was meaning was that the story wasn't necessarily B.S. Weirder things than that have happened in rush, as some of the stories in this thread show. |
Isnt the point of this thread to share funny rush stories? I think the point was that they KNEW someone whos mom was kind of nutty and didnt really know her daughter that well...made her rush and she did. I dont think its a crack at Greeks. My mom made me join the Brownies when I was little. I did it to make her happy and I tried to pretend like I liked it - but I didnt and I ended up dropping out. Yes there is a funny story about how I quit but I wont go into that...but does that mean I hate everyone in the brownies/girl scouts? No. Just something that I look back on and laugh. I dont think we should flame the storyteller...what kind of example, as Greeks, if are we setting if we jump all over somebody for sharing a story, one that was intended to be go along with the other funny rush stories?
|
get a grip!
oh please!
the point of THIS thread is to share funny/unusual/crazy rush stories. so someone posts one and gets called names and is made to feel bad. calm down! using curse words and making fun of someone takes away from credibility. it's not necessary to make a point. it does sound far fetched--however, we all know that people exaggerate. it's possible. but it doesn't make an "attack" the right approach. |

Pharmacy out of meds today???
Calm down. It's a humorous anecdote on a message board. And yes, I would have thought it was funny if it was my sorority's name in it. |
I dont recall saying that you were a great example of why people didnt like greeks. If you notice, I deleted that part of the thread earlier. I did however imply, and will direct towards you is that not everyone is against the greek system and calling someone a fuckwad or basically telling them that they are lying about a story...a story in a forum that is supposed to be about humorous rush stories really doesnt uphold the honor of the letters you are trying to defend (wasnt that the problem? that she mentioned your orgainization?). I dont really see what the big deal is...someone went through rush under false pretenses. Yeah it sucks that they would waste the time of chapter and maybe put some false hope that they would be gaining a sister - but its just a story that I dont think warrants the kind of angry response you gave. If you have anything else to say - PM me.

Change of pace
Okay, since everyone is getting worked up, I will hopefully make you all laugh with another rush story I just thought of. The first night of rush for us is sort of a no pressure, get-to-know-you type of thing, and we just basically chit chat and have a good time. Well, in my group we somehow got on the subject of what concerts we'd seen lately, and one of my sisters mentioned that she had gone to see Janet Jackson a few weeks earlier. One of the PNM's said, "Oh, yeah! I went to her concert! There was this one part in the concert where she dragged this dude on stage and, like, strapped him to this table thing and was all kissin' him all over the place and it was TOTALLY sick, you should have seen the boner on the guy!" (If you've seen her concert on HBO you know exactly what she's talking about...it IS kind of sick) but needless to say after the last comment, we all were sort of staring at her, open-mouthed. How the hell do you respond to that one?! One of my sisters managed to stammer, "Um, wow. He must have...uh, been, uh pretty embarrassed by that." Looking back it's totally hilarious but at the time it was just like, "Oh man, you did NOT just say that!" Hopefully this made you smile!:o)
|
anytime i hear the phrase "you should have seen the boner on that guy" it makes me smile...then die laughing :D
|
Glad that we are getting this thread back on track!
A rushee once asked me if we hazed, and I assured her we didn't. Her response was "That's too bad. I like being spanked from time to time."
|
This isnt really a rush story, but when I came home from my initiation, my friend James called me and asked me where I had been. When I told him he asked me if I got spanked - and I was like  why would I get spanked?? And he said "Oh I thought thats what happened, girls with bows in their hair spank each other for initiation". Good grief lol!

The story I posted was exactly as it was told to me. Now, since I didn't know her when she rushed, I have no way of verifying this. I just thought it was amusing. And I was not trying to insult Tri-Delta, although in retrospect I realize that I should have left the name out. My apologies. I also don't see what's so unbelievable about it, especially when compared to the other stories posted on this board. Quote:
By the way, I have met many wonderful men and women who are in Greek organizations and I am even trying to join one right now so please don't tell me that I'm ignorant or that I hate Greeks or that I don't know anything about Greek life. I've been doing my homework, and part of that has been hanging out here at GreekChat, reading your posts and learning about your Greek experiences. Good grief, people, all I did was post a story I found amusing. I don't see why you all need to jump down my throat. I think I'll be leaving this place. Obviously I am no longer welcome. |
calm down
EVERYONE...
rock chalk take a deep breath and keep posting. and the others chill out. you should show yourself better. mmcat |
Rock Chalk...
I didn't think you were implying that sororities or PNMs are fake. You said she was being fake to get acting experince. Acting is not being fake. It is being real. You just use someone elses words to say how you feel, because if you don't feel what the character is supposed to, then you're not doing your job as an actor. Actors get jobs at auditions because they are real, not because they fake people out. Keep it real. I am an aspiring actor, and that comment offended. Acting is the most honest profession there is. |
That last post was 777 times 2 plus 24 post. This now 778 plus 777 plus 24 word
|
Optimist...you are blowing my mind with those numbers :D
|
Lol, I haven't read this thread in a while, but reading it made me think up a funny Rush story...unfortunately, I'm the klutz in the story. I'm going through Rush on our first day, and I'm totally nervous because I don't know what to expect, if I'll have things to talk about, etc. Anyways, my group is walking into our second party, and I'm laughing about something with another girl in my group, and I'm looking at her as I'm walking-so I'm not seeing whats in front of me, and I catch my foot on something, trip and start to fall, and grab onto the girl in front of me so I don't fall on the ground. She of course had no clue what I was doing so she screamed. And everyone stared!! I was so emberassed. You know in the movie where Sandra Bullock is the FBI agent and they make her over for a pagent-I can't think of the name of the movie to save my life right now-and she's walking in her heels and she keeps falling in them? Ya, that's what it was like.
I was so embarrased, but I just laughed and was like, "Here I am!" And then I apologized to the girl I grabbed onto.:p |
FYI
In regards to what was posted earlier...
Has anyone ever read the book, Girls on the Verge ? It's written by a young sociologist in her mid-twenties, who studies various Rites of Passage for girls (debutante balls, Quincierias, etc), with Rush being one of them. She actually goes through Rush at UCLA, posing as an undergrad. Even though she was similar to the girl described in Rock Chalk's post (artsy-type, not a "typical" sorority girl), she puts on the "act" and ends really finding a genuine connection with Tri-Delt and even gets a bid! It all kind of sucks because she later has to reveal to everyone that she is actually doing all of it for research, and probably took a spot that could have gone to someone who wanted to pledge Tri-Delt and was an actual undergrad. Point being is, it's interesting because the author is someone who would have never have gone through rush under normal circumstances and had a very stereotypical conception of sororites. But she ended changing her mind along the way and could have actually seen herself pledging Tri-Delt in the end! |
Wouldn't it have been more honest for her to speak with the director of Greek Life beforehand, so when actual bid matching comes up she wouldn't get matched?
Although I suppose that may have affected the intergity of the study if he/she slipped up and mentioned something! |
