Ghosts and the Paranormal
I was watching Fox Family Channel's "Scariest Places on Earth" and I was wondering, have you had any experiences with the paranormal?
When I was younger my family and I lived in an apartment complex where I would hear funny noises at around 10 at night. Of course my parents just passed it off as the plumbing. A class project led me to a Hawaiian church across the street and I spoke with many of the church's elders who lived in the area who knew about the area history. The land I lived on was once occupied by many native Hawaiians who lived in small homes. In the 1930s an arsonist had set fire to the homes, killing hundreds of people. In the 1960s the apartments were built on the land and many people have complained of odd occurences. In my unit, I heard pounding on the walls (very much like hammering). In other units I heard of levitations, apparations, and in one case, child possesion. When I lived there, I never felt threatened in any way, but it was odd living amongst restless spirits. ooo when I was really little-- like 4. we had a poltergeist in the house. My brothers were newborn and 1 year old, and my mom says all this freaky stuff happened. Like Scott (the 1yr old) and I would be napping and stephen (newborn) would be in his playpen and she'd go into the kitchen, come out, and he'd be on the couch. Or one nihgt, she got up and all the liquids-milk, juice, champagne,etc in the fridge were poured on the floor, again we were all too young to have done it. It was all harmless stuff.
She called the preist to come out and bless the house and it never happened again. Later she found out the couple that had lived there before -- had a nephew who had lived with them die when he was like 7. Spoooooky. |

What an interesting topic to have started...very brave. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Well, I'm a psychology major and have studied everything from Abnormal Psychology to Animal Psychology to The Psychology of Religion and Spirituality. In fact, in the fall of '00 I took the The Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, The Psyc of Death and Loss, and Health Psychology. All three classes focused on paranormal activity, etc. My professor, Dr. Schwartz was on Dateline during that semester about a study he has been conducting here at the U of A to prove/disprove psychics and the like, such as John Edwards. Anyway, the information that was shared with the class makes for a convincing argument that spirits are among us. Do I believe this? By real I mean that it was someone I knew for many years and who was a significant person in my life. I had experienced something (in hindsight)that may have been connected with the death. Wow..see, if that happened to me and I saw stuff flying around I don't know what I'd do. That's why I've had a priest come in and bless every new place I've moved into (including my dorm rooms and apartments). I know it's extreme, but I come from a religious family and I take after my mother when it comes to superstition.

I agree OTW. I'm totally freaked by stuff like this. I woke up once last year and I'd swear I was awake, not dreaming, and saw a "ghostly" vision of an elderly woman in a house dress in my kitchen. It was so real I screamed! I also, unfortunately, am very sensitive to changes in energy--do you know what I mean? Like chills on the back of my neck kind of thing. I'm not nuts! ha ha I just believe that spirits exist, and if you're "prone" to seeing them, well you always will. Anyway. my mom gave me a chant to say that is supposed to "banish" any spirit or energy that is not Light and Good and I say it when I get that creepy feeling and it works. Psychological? Maybe.

Poltergeists are very interesting. I learned in my class (The Psychology of Religion and Spirituality) that most potergeists occur in homes that are occupied by teenage girls. At least this was one common factor that was found in the homes that claimed to have a potergeist. Another common factor was that the teenage girl was troubled (the troubles varied). These two common factors have led to theories that the poltergeist is actually the energy of the teenage girl. Meaning, their energy is what causes the strange occurences that are usually reported. |
that IS interesting. makes sense in a way too, given the harmless and 'annoying' nature of them.

I have another question. Have any of you ever experienced a choking sensation when you slept? I remember many times when I'd feel as if I were awake and aware of the things going on around me...yet when I tried to move I could...when I tried to open my eyes or speak, I couldn't. At first I thought it was just psychological (i.e. my body wasn't ready to get up yet), but I remember when I was 13 I felt someone breathing in my ear. I also noticed that those sensations were more prevalent when I slept on my back. The Japanese have a term for this "choking ghost", and it's called Kanashibari. Every since that breathing episode I started sleeping with Hawaiian salt, vinegar, and garlic in a dish on my nightstand (superstitions again). I still get those feelings, but not as much as I used to. When I moved back home nothing really has happened to me..thank GOD! |

That is part of the symptomology of night terrors. You wake up and are choking, or can't breath, or can't move and something is going on around you-- the sense of an evil spirit, or the feeling like you're being hailed on... I usually feel someone holding my hand reallllly tight--to the point of it hurting. Now, under the possibility that I could be holding my own hand I sleep with my arms as far apart as poss. and still it happens sometimes. I usually end up hurling myself onto the floor in my intense effort to wake up, usually screaming. Now I am nightmare free for almost 5 months... My home was haunted. Really haunted, but in a harmless way. The walls of two rooms are hugely think because the original logs from the logs cabins are still in there! There is an upstairs to the house, but no stairs to get there and it isn't finished. There was an accident and someone died while trying to build it! We moved in there after my great-grandmother died and immediatly stuff started happening. Random toilet flushings, things disappearing and showing up later, drawers being open, TV turning itself on, stuff being knocked over, etc... harmless really. We joked about it more that anything. Then one night I was lying in bed reading when my cat came streaking out of the bathroom and hid in my closet. I looked up and there was a woman standing in my bathroom. Let me say how strange that was - my brother was visiting his dad, and my mother was on a date. I was alone in the house except for my cats! Well, I saw her clear as day - she was facing the mirror so that I could see her back and then see her face in the reflection. I looked down to prop myself up, and when I looked back up she was gone!!! I grabbed my cat and my blanket (I was cold), turned on every light in the house, and played Solitaire until my mother came home.
Another thing that happened before this that really freaked me out was I woke up and there was sobbing in my brother's room (he's in one of the log cabin rooms). I though that it was him crying, so I walked over to his door (the bathroom is between us) and listened for a few minutes, finally deciding to knock. When I did, the crying stopped. I opened the door and Matthew was completely asleep. No tears on his face, nothing. I woke him up to see if maybe he was faking, but he was very asleep. The more I think about it the more I know that the ghost must be centered in the log cabin area! Creepy huh? About sleeping, I have narcolepsy, so I never pay any attention to my sleep. These are some great stories http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I myself majored in Administration of Justice but I had to take a core of psychology courses(one being abnormal) and another core of sociology courses. I remember a class where we watched this documentary about paranormal activity and I think it had that same professor speak that shopgirl mentioned. I dont really know what to make of paranormal activity myself. Its really difficult when your mind is open to suggestion, at least those that have a great imagination. Being that sometimes there can be more than one reason for an occurence. Dont get me wrong I'm not saying what you guys experienced wasnt what it was. I dont ever discount anything. I've never experienced paranormal activity in okinawa, japan as a kid or even here in Virginia. One Halloween when I was an undergrad at GMU some of my brothers and I went on a ghost tour in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. This lady was dressed up in a colonial dress and she took us around the town and told us of all kinds of revolutionary and civil war paranormal activity. Some of it sounds like the stuff Allie_XO spoke of. Like there this one building that had a spining wheel in it and for some reason it would randomally go by itself every spring when the building went up for sale. Or something like it. Okay, i have a couple of experiences. The first isn't a ghost story, but I think it fits paranormal criteria. I used to work as a "courtesy clerk" at grocery store. That is basicly the same as a bagger, but we take out the groceries for people too. Well, one day it just happened, I started hearing peoples thoughts. Like this one guy was really impaitent, not short tempered or anything, just didn't wanna be at the grocery store, so I'm walking with him to his car and he's thinking to him self "god I can't wait to be home" and I said "yeah, me too" and he said "excuse me?" so I reintereated "me too" and he was like " I didn't say anything." So the next customer comes through line and is balanicing her check book, and carring the three or whatever, so I blurt out the answer, and everyone just looks at me and she says "wow you must be psychic." This happened a few other times, but i never said anything about peoples thoguhts cuz, ya know, that's private. It went away though. I wish I still had that power.
Ghost Story- One time I was in 7th grade and I saw a ghost. At first I was kinda freaked out, but then she didn't leave, and I calmed down. This was right after my grandfather died. She looked really sad and gave out this sigh and I was like, whats wrong? She was said she was waiting for a boy who never showed up, and that she'd been waiting for what seemed like forever. I asked her what year, and then I was like um....this is 1995. Well, she said she had to leave, and I told her to say hi to my grandfather. She came back about a week later and said he was fine. Night Terrors- I hate those things!!! I have one where it feels like I'm strugling against something, and sometimes there is mettalic scratching, high pitched erroowwoerrroowweeerrrooowwww sound. |
OTW- great topic! Such scary stories. It is really interesting that it happens to troubled teenage girls. My sister had a really hard and troubled teen life.
I had to stay at home for awhile and she had taken my old room so I had to stay in hers. During that week I had the feeling that someone was on top of me. I know I was awake but I was too afraid to open my eyes. I could not move or scream. It would last for about 5 or 10 minutes until I forced myself to open my eyes. It was exactly like that "choking" effect. The only other person I have ever told was my sister because I thought people would think I was nuts if I told them. There was def. a presence in that room! |
brooklineu-- me too, irish, family history of psychic dreams and i get to be the 'lucky' one of my generation to have them. they're always about my family thouhg, which is freaky.

Oooo, scary topic! I could go on about it for ages. OTW, when I was studying at UH, my parents' friends offered me their backyard house free of rent. I went up to St. Louis Heights and loved it--UNTIL they said none of their kids would sleep there because "someone" kept pulling the covers off of them, usually while they were awake. (I moved to an apartment complex.)
A couple of years ago, I was teaching English to Hispanics in a local factory. It was October and I was teaching them all the Halloween words and suddenly, I swear, a piece of chalk leapt off the board and landed several feet in front of me. There was no way anyone could've faked it. I don't know who got out of there faster--the American architect who worked in there, the "macho" Mexican men, or me. I told the CEO and he casually said, "Oh yeah, weird stuff happens here all the time; it was a parachute factory during the war and several people were killed in the machinery." |

When you were at UH, did that hanging at Mokihana dorm already take place? There was that young man who hung himself in the closet on the 9th floor up until a few years ago he was regularly seen in that room. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Glen Grant (a renowned ghost hunter) but he had called in psychics to assess the situation and they determined that he was a tormented soul who caused havoc to whoever lived in that room. Then exorcists were called in around 1995 or so and they say the spirit finally left. I don't know, I lived in Mokihana my freshman year and everytime I walked past that room it still gave me the creeps (this was in 97-98). Despite the fact that I'm easily spooked, I've been called on by some visiting friends to take them around the island to visit some "haunted" sites. So, this weekend should be an adventure! p.s. did you ever find out who or what that entity was at the St. Louis Heights home? Prophetic dreams! Oh my gosh! I dream all the time, and mostly it's junk, but there was one time that really freaked me out! I had fallen asleep and dreamed that I was in a plane crash. I was sitting and looking out a window as we took off and it was rocky and bumpy and all of a sudden there was a streak of red and then it was over. When I woke up I turned on the news and there was "Breaking News" about the Concord crashing in England. It has crashed right at takeoff. I still get chills thinking about it.
I think a lot of paranormal stuff is hooey! You know - Call me now fer ya free reading! and that kind of stuff. But I've always heard that for every rumor you hear, there had to be a reason that it started. I think the same applies here - there has to be some reason why we even HAVE the concept of ghosts! Another thing, one of Newton's Laws (I think) says that energy can not be created nor destroyed, it can only change form. Scientists have noted that the human body weights less right after death than it did right before death. Is it possible that the energy in our spirit just changed form when we die??? Hence ghosts? The night I woke up and saw the ghost of the old woman in my kitchen -- it wasn't threatening at all, or scary--I was just freaked from the shock of it. But I was living in a very old area of Hollywood and my mom mentioned at the time with the age of the area, and the history, you can only imagine the things that went on.
I have deja vu dreams sometimes. Like last year, I dreamed that my whole family was together on the deck in my parents backyard. Everyone--and we live all over the place and hadn't been ALL together in 20 years. My Grandma was there too, she passed away 9 years ago. Well, not even 2 months later my aunt and cousins moved back to te city my parents are in and this Christmas, everyone flew there for thr Holidays and the scene was EXACTLY like the dream I had, so I could not help but feel that my Grandma must be there too, and happy to see all of us together again. Okay - here's my ghost stories --
When I was about 10, and my brother 7, he had to sleep in my bed because his room was being painted. In the middle of the night, we heard a noise, and sat up to see a woman's ghost standing in my closet -- I had a full length mirror on the inside of the door, and she was standing there sobbing into a hankerchief. She was wearing a dress that looked like something you'd see in the old South with the big hoop skirt. She was just standing there sobbing -- we both ducked under the covers and then she was gone. We had never spoken about it until recently, and we both remembered it vividly! Weird... So the weirdness continues - I still have deja 'vu all the time. I have never understood why some people don't believe in ghosts when there are so many of us who have experienced them. I have an open mind, though, so I guess that I believe in things easier than others. Here's my latest -- our house was built brand new on top of an old farm. Our whole neighborhood (about 30 houses down one street) was. One night my husband and I were walking our pooches, and I saw something in this small wooded area in our neighbors front yard -- when I stopped to look, my hubby said "Don't freak, but that is a small family cemetary from the old farm -- there are like 3 civil war soldiers buried there and I didn't want to tell you because I knew you'd freak" so I tried to remain calm (okay this is our NEIGHBOR'S front yard here, but it is wooded in that one small section so its like a natural area). So I made a joke about not wanting any haints hanging around. Well a few days later, I had the dishwasher open, and was putting the plates and bowls away. We have like 3 different plate sizes, and these big soup bowls that match our pattern. All of a sudden, one at a time, the plates started flying out of the cabinet at me. One by one and then followed by the other plates and bowls -- and I mean FLYING out of the cabinet like frisbees at me. I was running and ducking, but they were just hitting me all over. My husband came running and physically had to force the doors shut to keep the other stuff in there. We are not talking an earthquake or something. Whatever it was, was pissed at me or something! So needless to say, I was really upset (this is just last year, people!). So we began noticing that in the back bedroom (the guest room we don't use that much) - the light would come on at random, we'd hear noises and bumping around in there. At first my doggies freaked, but even they have gotten used to it now. One day I was leaving for work, and I heard a huge crash in there, I went running back there, but not one single thing was out of place. So we have come to the conclusion that he lives in the closet and that he likes having that door shut and the closet relatively clean. We hear the most noises and bumping when I do my quick cleaning (ie, throw all the crap in the closet) and that's also when he is constantly keeping me awake. Anyway, we went to Charleston, SC in November, and took the ghost tour - when I asked our guide about what is making our ghost be so angry towards us, he suggested that we research those graves and find out who they were and where/how they were killed. He also said that we should talk to the ghost, like he is a part of our family, and that will keep him calm too. So that sounds too weird to me, but hey - we do it and it has seemed to help some. Oh did I mention he's a pervert -- I have been in the shower, and the whole curtain will all of a sudden come flying back -- at first I thought it was my husband, but then it would start happening when he wasn't there. So now I wait until he's home to shower! hehehe - can you hear the 911 call now..."Hello - I was assaulted in the shower by a ghost" hahaha |

OK, so in the same apartment where I saw the ghost in my kitchen-- one week everynight I came home I noticed a picture frame with a pic of me and a gooood friend from high school was moved. I always left it on the right side of the dresser, I'd come home, it would be on the left side, or in another room completely. So I started thinking...hmmmm...I wonder if something's going on with her. So I called her, and sure enough, she was having some extreme complications in her pregnancy and her baby was born a week later 2 months early. Fortunately, mother and son are thriving now, but it was so freaky! |

OTW, I remember hearing about a hanging in Hale Aloha but I don't remember which dorm. All this ghost stuff kept coming up when I was there. I heard so many "Night Marcher" stories, especially in Waialae, that I'm surprised I didn't turn gray. Can you tell the board about the Night Marchers? The college nearest where I live has a lot of "happenings". There's this supposedly haunted church that you can drive out to and on the way, you count 7 bridges; on the way back, you count 6. Also, I was working in the founder's old garden there once and all of a sudden, I heard terrible screams and these students came running into the garden. When I stood up, it scared them again and they screamed again and strated crying. Seems that they were cleaning up the founder's antebellum home and one teasingly called down the dumbwaiter for the servant (who's been dead since the forties). A creaky old voice answered, "Yessss?" It was before 8 AM and there was absolutely no one else in the locked house. These students were about the most serious three on campus and they never really got over it. |
Ahhh, the night marchers. Growing up I've always thought that it was purely urban legend. And then when Glen Grant came out with his book about true supernatural accounts I became a believer.
The night marchers are a group of spirits that roam restlessly on the earth. They've been known to travel around the North Shore area (near Waimea Falls Park), but then I've heard that they also frequent Moanalua/Pearl Harbor area. Speculation states that the ancient Hawaiians had their different paths around the islands, and they could still be roaming them till this day. But anyway, if these spirits are disturbed, they can easily take your soul with them back into the underworld. I've always been taught to lay face down when I hear the constant beating of a drum! The Waialae area is also a very haunted part of Honolulu. Back in the day there was a cemetery, and eventually it got turned into a drive-in (which closed many years ago). It's a very "ritzy" part of town, and the old drive in was eventually turned into a mall, where there have been accounts of a faceless woman in the womens bathroom (a friend of mine saw her in high school). Since then I refuse to go into that bathroom alone! I don't know why this topic fascinates me as much as it does! |
I'm trying to remember what all I heard about the Night Marchers. Some people told me that they would be sitting in their houses and suddenly one door would burst open and they would hear the sound of the marching warriors tramping in perfect rhythm across the room, then the far door would swing open and out they'd go.
No wonder people in Waialae are antsy about ghost stuff.Our Angel Flight unit went trick or treating for UNICEF there and we knocked on one door and this ancient little Asian lady opened it, started screaming, and ran off. Her daughter put it all together--one of our Japanese girls was wearing a white kimono folded right over left, which is apparently what Japanese corpses wear. |

Yeah, people in Kaimuki/Waialae area are very sensitve when it comes to the supernatural. The Harding Ave. incident (where the cops got, um, yeah, mutilated) was enough to get a whole neighborhood to keep quiet about things like that. |

And I swear my apt, (built in 1904), is haunted. I'll be looking for something, it's not where I put it, I look all over the house, and then I look back in the original place and it's there. I'm not THAT blonde, I swear!!! It happens ALL the time - including this morning. Plus there were these pictures from a trip, I put them on my coffee table, then they were gone. Not in the garbage, no where in the house, just gone. No one had been in the apt. but me and my cat. And i'm pretty sure the cat didn't eat them! CREEPY!!!! |

That happened to me when I was about 10 years old. I was laying down in my bed watching TV and then I felt someone touch my shoulder. As soon as I felt it my eyes closed and I couldn't move. I was laying there trying to open my eyes or say something but I couldn't. I remember trying to yell for my parents but only hearing my breath rushing out my mouth. After a couple of minutes it stopped and my mother ran in because I was still yelling. I was really young and extremely scared. I stayed in my parents room that night but I couldn't sleep because I saw a weird light in my room. It was probably a street light, but when you are that scared it doesn't matter.
Hey Billy Optimist, The same thing happened to me. When I was working at a summer camp I "heard" another one of the counselors "say" that her leg was hurting. hey knowledge! One class I took said that there were/are doctors trying to research that! Its called telepathy. A few of the subjects were able to comunicate in a lab situation, but not word for word. The same stuff, just a worded a little differently. I think it's neat. I wouldn't want anyone reading my thoughts unless I could read theirs back.

Wow, i didn't think this kind of paranormal activity was so common. I only have one story that happened last semester.
It occurred in the house of my sister's boyfreind. His dad has an american partner in their company that bought this house for whenever he comes up to Brockville (my hometown, located in Eastern Ontario). This house is absolutely beautiful, 13 bedrooms, 2 kitchens, an Old victorian house on waterfront property. Some rooms are in need of renovation because no one has lived there in awhile, but other than that it's still amazing. Well, since the owner rarely (if ever) stays there, the house is only used by my sister's boyfreind and he only furnished the bedroom he lives in. I've heard so many times from him and my sister that this place was haunted and how none of his freinds would sleep there by themselves. I never really believed him until one night; I was playing poker with a group of his freinds in his bedroom/appartment and had decided to just crash in the empty bedroom beside his. So it's about 1 a.m., I couldn't sleep because there's no heat and it's the middle of december. When suddenly I hear this weird noise from the hallway like someone dropped a wooden object on the floor. It kind of startled me a bit, but I didn't think too much of it because not long after I heard a lot of commotion in the bedroom where my sister and her boyfreind were sleeping. I geuss he forgot he had moved a couple tables around for the poker games and stubbed his toe while walking around in the dark... So after that it was quiet for a good hour or so when this loud knock banged on my door! I jumped up, frozen, and said out loud what the hell was that?...I can't remember how long I remained motionless, staring with anticipation at this door in this big empty room. The next morning I told them about it, nonchalantly john confessed that the last tenant (an old woman) died in his bedroom. He said he hear's all kinds of noises, one night he even heard a music box playing in his bedroom. I geuss some ppl aren't as affected by it as others, but one things for sure, I am not sleeping in that house again. [This message has been edited by Lil_G (edited April 01, 2001).] |
One time I was talking to my mom in my parents room while she was falling asleep and I fell asleep on the bed. I woke up because I heard someone talk into my ear...nobody was there. That happened again at my fiance's new apartment when I was helping him move in...in the middle of the night I was awakened by a voice. I also had a dream that a plane was crashing into a neighborhood the night before the crash that happened in Queens a few weeks ago.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that there is another, hidden side to our world. Sometimes, they collide. I have had countless experiences in my life, the first one when I was about five or so. The last was perhaps a month ago. My son had this ability too and we were connected. When he was around 7-a common age to see this diminish-our connection was gratly diminished. We still have moments now and then.
This is an area where I am well versed because of my early experiences. I can't tell you the number of books I have read on this subject. Not everyone is open to these experiences and there will always be doubters. Now, I have a question to add. Has anyone else had an OBE? This is an out of body experience. When I was a teen, I got hold of directions on how to do it. I tried, it worked, I was frightened and jerked back. However, since then, I have had frequent experiences. To give you an example, it's like floating outside yourself and being able to look down and see YOU! Once you gain control of the feeling of shock, you can direct yourself and go flying. Crazy? Maybe, but there are a lot of books out there that validate this experience. |
Oh yeah, I just remembered! Since this summer I have periodically felt someone pulling my hair. Like pulling little pieces of it the way people do with your ponytail just to tick you off you know? The first time it happened I said to my fiance "Stop pulling my hair, it's not funny" and he looked very confused. Then it kept happening when nobody was around. Last night I was at an orchestra concert and I felt like someone bumped into the back of my head, and when I turned around, the seat behind me was empty and there was nobody walking through the aisle or anything. Very creepy.

Note to self: don't read about ghosts/hauntings when alone in the middle of the night anymore.
