White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack
"I was taught to see racism only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring dominance on my group" --Peggy McIntosh
The "Invisible Knapsack" has been discussed on GC before, I just know it! But I couldn't find it. This is a good tool for those of you who may be struggling with the idea of "privilege." https://www.racialequitytools.org/re...s/mcintosh.pdf For me, this was a good starting point for developing empathy with women and with transpeople as well, as it made me think about the things I don't even have to worry about as a cisgender man. |
It’s in DeltaBetaBaby’s signature. (I knew that would drive you nuts wondering where it was.)

Thank you for posting this. I think this should be required reading for everyone.
I have found that my white male friends have come around to the idea that sexism is an issue in society, so I have used this paper to open a discussion and I think that its framing in terms of male privilege allows people to have access to this discussion from a viewpoint that is is analogous enough to open that door... but obviously it is not the same and there are many differences between sexism and racism. |
