Chapter house??

Where is everybody from? City, state, and school?? Do you have a sorority/fraternity house?? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hi, I am a member of sorority that may or may not be considered a local. We have three chapters nationally and a national organization, but we are not affiliated with any umbrella organization. We currently have three ASK chapters located at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities campus), University of Oklahoma (Norman campus), and the University of Louisville, as well as a colony at the University of Texas at Arlington. Of all our chapters and colony, only the UMN group has a house. From what we understand it took them about 5 years to become stable enough to afford it and they didn't get insurance until @3 years later.

Was there a particular reason why you were asking about houses?

AOX81 02-04-2001 01:42 PM

The reason I asked if you had a house was because in the city that my school is in, it is illegal to have a house with more than five unrelated women living together. It is considered a "whore" house. But there are 12 fraternity houses in our area. I don't understand why women living together is worse than a bunch of guys living together.

That is absolutely horrible! That is completely sexist! Where is this??? I am from Wisconsin, and we have our own sorority house, where 15 women live.

AOX81 02-08-2001 05:23 PM

I am from Flint, Michigan. Yeah it is sexist and it sucks!! We used to rent a 3 story house that had five bedrooms but unfortunately they sold the house. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

I am not sure if the "brothel" law is real or urban myth, but it's often used as an excuse to keep sororities from having housing.

Way to get around this: each bedroom is a different apartment number. That's what our landlord did. If you have a greedy landlord around (not that there are ever any of those, har har) he probably wouldn't care.

Actually AOX, I just found out (I go to a school just south of Milwaukee, WI) that Milwaukee has that same statute, accept it's only four unrelated women. So, it's not just a myth! And it's horrible! If that happened in my town I'd raise hell!

You should just transfer your chapter to University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, then you could have as many girls in a house as you want! Hell, if you wanted to, I guess you could have a brothel, LOL! Anyways, you should all move to Whitewater and hang out with the Alpha's (my sorority, Alpha Sigma)!

AOX,
Are you still attending UofM? I just graduated from UofM this past December. What year are you? Finally someone from UofM on this board!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

AOX81 02-13-2001 04:01 PM

ZChi4Life,
No, I am no longer attending U of M, I graduated in December. Now I'm living in Ohio

prdlocal,
The law is very stupid, we are working on getting it changed. We should move our brothel to the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif We would probably have more fun there!! If we were there we'd hang out with you guys anyday http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Just a little update for everyone...

One of my friends who is in a local fraternity has found a closed down retirement home that somebody is interested in renting out and he has asked our girls if they would like to split it with their fraternity. It is huge, 3 stories, with around 40 rooms!! We are super excited!! I hope it works out. It sucks not not having a house.

That sounds EXCELLENT!! How many people are in each organization?

AOX81 02-16-2001 10:13 AM

Well as of right now we have around 26 girls and I'm not sure what kind of official number the guys have. I think that they have around 15 members but they are getting ready to have rush again.

I wish we could share a house with the fraternity we're coupled with! They're local too, Phi Chi Epsilon. I guess, it'd be nothin' but trouble though. We get in enough trouble just hangin' out with the Phi Chi's!

That same crazy rule is established in milwaukee...our sister soro...well kind of...aren't allowed to have a house..because of the unrelated issue, yet, we have a nice 3-story house...i don't get it.

Has anyone ever actually checked into the brothel law?? I have been digging through tons of stuff from the town that I'm from and I can't find anything about this so called law. It's probably just a big lie!!
