Kappa Sigma fraternity's charter has been temporarily revoked after a series of incidents including hazing, according to ASU public records.

Earlier this semester, a student was seen vomiting near a trash bin filled with empty milk cartons after apparently being forced to drink excessive amounts of milk, records state.

An e-mail sent Oct. 19 from Mary Skorheim, assistant director for student development and Memorial Union, warned Juan Gonzalez, vice president for student affairs, and Sally Ramage, associate vice president for student affairs, of the possible revocation of Kappa Sigma's charter. Skorheim also described the incident.

"Basically, staff were contacted about noise, went to investigate, many students were there and they saw a number of empty gallons of milk in a garbage can and observed a student, who had consumed a significant amount of milk, vomit into the garbage can," Skorheim wrote. "This is behavior previously reported, and the chapter had been informed this was not acceptable."

Gonzalez then sent an e-mail to ASU President Michael Crow and other University officials later that day stating that Kappa Sigma's charter was being revoked that night.

Gonzalez said in the e-mail that the fraternity had already been placed under a trusteeship and was suspended under its national office because of past "incidents."

A fraternity under trusteeship must contact alumni before making major decisions such as entering into contracts.

"This most current issue is related to a hazing incident," Gonzalez wrote. "The Chapter has had a series of incidents. Their national [organization] has reached its limit of patience."

Melodie Raab, managing director of Adelphi II Commons, a dorm complex for fraternities, said Kappa Sigma members are still living in the residence hall and won't be leaving any time soon, regardless of what happens to the fraternity.

"All the members are required to complete their housing contracts for the remainder of the lease," Raab said.

Mic Wilson, director of Kappa Sigma's national office, said he and other organization officials are not yet saying whether they have decided what will happen to the ASU chapter.

"Right now they're still in our judicial process," Wilson said. "We'll have a meeting in January to discuss further these issues."

ASU Greek Life coordinator Michael Najor said a complaint has been made against Kappa Sigma, and that all incidents are being handled by student judicial affairs and ASU police rather than ASU Greek Life.

"We don't have a lot of information right now because [Kappa Sigma] is still in judicial proceedings," Najor said.

ASU police reports also indicate that at least two other hazing incidents have taken place on campus. It is unclear which fraternities or sororities were involved.

One report states that prior to Nov. 1, pledges at an unidentified Greek organization were occasionally "made to consume alcohol, [were] being paddled, forced to do repetitive exercises, yelled at and humiliated, and told they could have only limited contact with certain parties."

Another report states that pledges were made to participate in a lineup prior to Nov. 15. The pledges were "yelled at and berated for two hours, and were threatened with physical violence if pledging activities were reported," the report said.

Ramage said hazing violates ASU's student code of conduct.

"Hazing is clearly against the standards of fraternities and sororities, and it's against the law," Ramage said. "If we learn about hazing we're required by state law to notify officials."

Too bad; the Arizona chapters were always pretty strong, it's a shame that it has come to this.

Also; this is the first milk-related hazing event I've ever heard of. Weird.

Can you die from too much milk? Very strange. Sad to hear this.

Actually with milk if you drink too much you'll just vomit it all up.
