"Froggie was a Kappa"

Hello, lovely Kappas! I come to you with a question I am hoping to solve for an older Kappa friend who is not comfortable with computers.

Does anyone remember this song or lyric: "Froggie was a Kappa"? Maybe from NPC campfire sing-along competition? I think it was a little fun song sung during rush at SMU a while back too. If anyone has any ideas for me, I'd love to hear them.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post.

I have a song book for Kappa. I looked through every page and read all the lyrics. I didn't see anything with the lyrics you are asking about. Granted, there may be other songs not in the book, but my guess is that it is a chapter song.

It’s not familiar to me either, but my friend google found an old LP by the Kappa Pickers with a song named Froggie. That’s got to be it.

Thank you so very much for your detective work! You got much farther than I did. So excited to learn more about the Kappa Pickers. I'm really very grateful to you.

Thank you to MSKKG too! I can't believe you went to all that effort to help me. What a great kindness!

You're welcome. amIblue? did more detective work than I did--I will have to try the link to hear the song. Thanks, amIblue?, for finding the album. I hope this was what you were looking for, Delta Darling.

I was not able to listen to the track, but let me know if you can.

Being kind of computer unsavvy, I was hesitant to install anything the site recommended to allow me to listen to the song. It probably would be OK, but I shy away from doing that kind of thing. Oh, well. The words and tune will just have to stay a mystery to me.

Is this it?

So. . . . I was in Kappa Pickers at Kansas State back in the late 70s-early 80s. We had a song called Froggie Went a Courtin'. Could that be it? Actually, the whole chapter would sing it for serenades. I have the words in a songbook compiled for a KKG reunion from a few years ago. I would be glad to share them if you think it's the right song.

wildcatfan, That sounds AMAZING!! I am so glad you wrote. Thank you so very much! I am intrigued by the Kappa Pickers! What a cool endeavor. If you could share the words, I would very much appreciate it. I've also ordered the one Kappa Pickers album AmIblue linked to above. This thread has been incredibly helpful. Thank you!

amIblue? and MSKKG, you've helped me so very much. I'm delighted by what you've turned up! THANK YOU!

:D Glad we could help. You'll have to write a review of the song for us.

Delta Darling 10-24-2018 05:52 PM

I can't wait to hear it. I love bluegrass so I bet I'll enjoy the whole album.

Here are the lyrics!

As I thought about it, I'm sure that this is the song that you are looking for. I mean, really, how many songs did Kappa Pickers sing entitled "Froggie?"!! But, I do know that sometimes chapters (including ours) would take songs and change the lyrics. It's possible that SMU tweaked the words to start out Froggie was a Kappa.

I wish there was a way to convey the tune and rhythm. This has been an earworm for me all day! Until I figure out how to do that without a music staff, here are the words. I will say that it is in 4/4 or cut time, it starts comfortably on middle C, and the 4th line of each stanza, as well as the words in parentheses, are spoken, although melodically and in time.

It is a silly song. I can't say it was one of my favorites but we used to end serenades with it by saying and waving "goodbye" after singing the song to the serenading fraternity.

Froggie went a courtin' and he did go uh-huh, uh-huh
Froggie went a courtin' and he did go uh-huh
Froggie went a courtin' and he did go
Down to the brown bottle for the midnight show
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.

Molly Mouse was a hat-check girl, uh-huh (love for sale)
Molly Mouse was a hat-check girl, uh-huh
Molly Mouse was a hat-check girl,
He said, "I'll give that mouse a whirl"
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.

He hopped up to Miss Mousie's side uh-huh (The direct approach)
He hopped up to Miss Mousie's side uh-huh
He hopped up to Miss Mousie's side
He said, "Miss Molly won't you be my bride?"
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.

Without my Uncle Rat's consent un-uhn (That'll be the day)
Without my Uncle Rat's consent un-uhn
Without my Uncle Rat's consent
I would not marry the president
Un-uhn, un-uhn, un-uhn.

So long Clyde, better hit the road, so long (flake off)
So long Clyde, better hit the road, farewell
So long Clyde, better hit the road
You ain't no froggie, you're a horny toad
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.

So long, farewell, goodbye.
So long, farewell, goodbye.
