We got lunch and dinner threads- how about some love for all of us out there looking to get in good shape. Post here what you did today- whether you took the stairs at lunchtime or climbed Everest on a mountain bike in a Speedo.

Today I played 2 games of racquetball and then did a 45 minute full body workout with my trainer.

Today I did 30 minutes on a stationary bike, 30 minutes on the treadmill and 25 minutes on the elliptical. I did five minutes of light stretching in between each and after all the cardio I worked on upper body for about 20 minutes with free weights.

YAY! Thank you for starting this thread. I love exercise and am always looking for ideas to add variety.
I spent about an hour at the driving range and then just went on about a 1/2 hour walk. Very low-key today.

I walked around Bed, Bath & Beyond for a long time. No seriously, I'm going to start training for a half marathon soon! The kick-off day is August 2 and the actual event is October 19 (Nike Women).

Yesterday my youngest son and I went to the YMCA for a little bit. He worked out for 30 minutes playing basketball while i worked out on the eliptical machine and then we both did a running/walking routine on the track.

I'll be back a the Y today for an hour and a half work out and then an hour or two of laying out at the pool. I love the Y!

Ooooh, Nike Women's is supposed to be awesome...with Ghiradelli chocolates and Tiffany's necklaces and massage stops and goodness knows what else. I'm thinking about doing the full next year...couldn't take the time to get out to California this fall since it's an election year.

I have six half marathons scheduled through May of next year (a small local one, Richmond, ING Miami, National in DC, Flying Pig in Cincinnati, and the Marine Corps Historic Half in Fredericksburg, VA). Hoping to run my first full next fall and the work on qualifying for Boston.

I ran my weekend long run this morning - ten miles. I won't be able to run this weekend...the Senate will be in session so I'll be spending the weekend in the Capitol building. :(

Law school essentially killed my workout routine; I used to run about 30-35 miles per week, and lift at least three days a week. But, between working full time during the day and taking classes at night, I let things fall way off. That's what happens when you're doing 16 hour days...

However, the past month or so I've tried to get back into it. Today I ran 2.5 miles, and did some ab work.

Yesterday I slid down the stairs instead of walking down them. They say you feel the workout burn two days later but I'm pretty sure I'm feeling it now...on my ribs, my hip, my ankle, my wrist...:o

I just got this today:

Subject: great new exercise program

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.
With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.
Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.
After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks. Then try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. :))

Wow, y'all are putting me to shame! I walk an hour everyday, and then use a yoga ball for some core exercises when I think about it. I find gyms boring, so I'm thinking about trying a ballet class in the fall that's especially for adults who have never studied dance.

slight hijack:

I used to take Adult Ballet classes when I lived in NC and then in Houston, I did Adult Ballet and Jazz classes-so much fun!! I'm going to start some more in the fall here in Huntington, to get back into it! And these were all beginner classes, because I didn't take ballet as a kid or anything either. You will feel the burn, trust me!!

/back to topic

Haven't worked out yet today, but I'll probably be doing a tape later that has toning and cardio in it. I usually run, but not in the summer because I'm a weenie.

I walked around the neighborhood last night with the husband, son and dog.

I generally try to walk at least 30 minutes 5-6 days a week, but it's proving more difficult the farther along I get in this pregnancy, especially now that it's summer and hot/humid out. Last year I trained for and ran my first 5K (a big deal from someone who is *not* a runner) and I hope to do it again next year.

Right after my 30-minute walk, I realized I locked myself out of the house. So add to the walk, dragging out the 20' ladder, climbing the ladder, popping the screen and crawling into my second-floor bedroom.

I think this qualifies for cross-training.

I am trying to fulfill my 10,000 steps a day (Alpha Gam Walkto2010 1,000 mile challenge) but I'm trying to get my ankle to heal after slightly straining it. I'm averaging 7k-8k steps until it gets healed.

I walked around a lot yesterday, missed yoga due to work and having to go pick up VandalShyster's birthday cakes. We have a tradition of getting tiny little dessert cakes and sharing them so we can have a variety but not too much sugar/fat/calories. I did a lot of housework in the morning though, and moved a couch and tv.

I do think I'm going to register to become a yoga and pilates instructor. The classes are in September and then I can get paid to work out.

I think we're going to Costco today, that counts as walking around, right?

1 hr of water aerobics at my gym. This was my first time at this location, and the instructor might be the toughest and most serious water aerobics instructor ever. Hubby and I also shopped in a huge retailer and a huge farmer's market, so we did a lot of walking. I'm officially wiped out.

Yesterday I took my kids ice skating for an hour and a half.

Today I did 20 minutes [2 miles] on the elliptical, a half mile on the treadmill [working on picking up my pace], 5 minutes on the elliptical going backwards, and 5 minutes on the arc trainer.

Not as much cardio as I like to do, but am still feeling weak from the migraine. Still feel better physically today than yesterday, so that's a plus.

Anyone else ever done one-legged squats?

Only when I was working as a trainer. And then only when I was either demonstrating them for a client, or if I was in a train-the-trainer session and one of the other trainers was making me do them. :D They are brutal, and I never have been really good at forcing myself to do something that wasn't at least a little bit fun!

EE-BO
08-19-2008, 08:48 PM
They are definitely brutal! I had a mishap this weekend and scraped a lot of skin off one of my hands. So I cannot swim until it scabs over, nor can I do any exercises where I have to hold a bar with both hands. I think the one legged squats were part of my "punishment" since I am sure there are other things I could have done.

But at least I picked a good week to get hurt. Thunderstorms all week- so I could not have swum anyway, and today instead I had a 2 mile run at a very good fast pace courtesy of the 85 degree weather with a cool breeze.

I am contemplating going further tomorrow at a slower pace. Any runners out there who could comment there? I started running again 3 months ago and worked up to 2 miles at about an 8:30 pace. Today I was on about a 7:15 pace. Is it better to slow down and try for more distance, or keep lowering the pace for now before I aim for more distance? My eventual goal is to get back to my college routine of running twice a week and doing 4 miles in 28 minutes.

I would slow it down a bit and add the mileage if I were you. Work your way up to the 4 miles, then work on decreasing the time it takes to run them. For most people increasing distance naturally makes them faster over shorter distances. If you only want to run twice a week, you might consider making every third run a longer distance, and every once in a while doing a shorter, faster distance just to mix things up a bit.

aggieAXO- in case it helps, we have a lot of people at my club who just walk in the water. So if that is ever a good compromise, it can be great for the back to just walk the pool a few laps. Many of the walkers here do not like getting wet either, and this ends up being a good solution for them.

Pretty much. What I had to do was stand on one leg and then SLOWLY (I started off moving too fast and got fussed at to move slow) go into a seated position onto a bench about 18 inches off the ground and then immediately- and slowly- come back into a standing position all the time on one foot. The first few were not bad, but doing 40 per set was rough.

srmom- paying the membership is step 1. I paid 2 years at my place while traveling even though I never went, but once I got the incentive to get myself back in shape- it was there and waiting. 6 months and almost 60 pounds off later I don't even wonder why I waited. I am just happy I finally got it together.

Today I did 10 miles of hill intervals on an exercise bike and it was a pretty good workout on the upper legs. Followed it with a long walk to cool down. Hand is healing faster every day, and I look forward to tearing it up in the pool next week. I am tired of running!

Do you do triathlons/have you ever thought about it?

I did a 10 mile run today...my race season kicks off in three weeks!

I have given it some thought now that my weight loss goal is nearly done and I am finding myself feeling more competitive when I play racquetball etc. I think I need to compete at something to keep motivated and move forward.

For now I am going to try swimming again- since that is where I have some experience and also the sport I like most. But we'll have to see how well I take to swimming 10,000-15,000 meters a week- likely more in time.

If that proves too monotonous, then triathalons are definitely a possibility. We have a lot of them here in Austin, and training for one offers a good variety (though I am not sure I would be up for a 10 mile run like you just did!)

1 hour of racquetball today followed by 30 minutes of heavy lifting- a refocus in the weightroom to increase my power for swimming. Hand bandages came off today, so hoping to be back in the pool this week...

Swimming is my first sport too. I started triathlon training after shoulder surgery kept me out of the water for a few months. When I returned, it allowed me to cut my time spent in the water to give my shoulder a rest and still compete. It made me a much better runner, too, which got me into the half and full marathon. Tris are also a big ego boost for swimmers since most triathletes are stronger on the bike or run...I'm usually one of the first women out of the water on the swim (which I promptly lose on the bike :))

Sprint tris are a very manageable distance...usually around a 500 swim, 12 mile bike and 5k run.

I have a 45 minute tempo run on tap for this evening.

45 laps today. Felt good on an unexpected 103 degree day where swimming was about the only good outdoor exercise option.

I went jogging at 12:30 PM, almost heat stroked doing the 3 mile loop at the lake-not smart! I didn't realize how hot it got yesterday.

Yikes! LOL- I did not think about that.

ADqtPiMel- that is a pretty awesome swim distance!

Thanks! I only swim once a week now as cross training since I'm focused on running, so I try to get as much distance in as I have time for.

45 minute tempo run on the books for tonight...my first half marathon of the season is next weekend!

Still, that is great distance. Granted I do a lot of speedwork and butterfly, but even so- I am in awe at an 80 lap routine. That is what I need to work up to.

Today I had a 1 hour racquetball lesson that I needed badly. Helped a lot and I hope I can win some games next week.

You know how we all like to convince ourselves we can work out just as hard alone as in a group? I was reminded of the fallacy of that notion today.

50 lap practice with the Masters swim team at my club. It was great and right now I am in pain- the good kind where you are sore all over. For some reason I was chosen to be the leader in my lane on my first day- and I just kept going faster and faster hoping I was not slowing everyone up. My fear of being an inconvenience to others overcame my desire to slow down!

Again, Body Combat. Yesterday was Body Attack plus some morning stretches and abdominal work. Tomorrow it will be Body Flow and hopefully roller skating as well. And hopefully I will be able to go to Zumba on Monday.

I skipped my morning workout. Instead, I spent two hours moving furniture, scrubbing and mopping a fire dept. facility. Later today I might do some yoga to help balance out today's 'workout'.

20 minutes hill interval on the bike and then 6 sets of ab work. I think this officially ends Saturday being the "rest day." I will keep it light, but I really like doing something every day at this point.

I just started working out again after a long, long break, and way too many pounds gained. I just did 20 mins. on the treadmill-- and I'm covered in sweat, so tired I can barely move. I feel pathetic. :o But I keep telling myself each step on the treadmill is one in the right direction. It's funny, we got this treadmill (a really nice one with nice built in programs and stuff!) at a thrift shop for $25.00, and I swear I don't think it's EVER been used before. So it is my goal to really break the sucker in.

That pretty much describes what the weather is like everyday here. I have to say it has helped with my endurance, though I doubt I could run a half marathon in the heat/humidity.

Will be running 5 mile loop tonight.
