Any good leader should know what Roberts Rules of Order are! While in that position, you are like a god, you run the meeting to a certain extent!
I know, as I ran it with an iron hand so not to get out of hand! The only time (?) was when we had a 14 hour meeting to decide whom we would affiliate with!
I won!!!! Thank goodness!

That reqires a 2/3 vote of the members and isn't debateble or amendable . . . And for those that aren't sure: Calling the question,
AKA moving the previous question, is basically a motion to end debate and vote. Because you are ending debate and not allowing others to speak, it takes the 2/3 vote to do it.

Thanks for the website James. I did debate in HS as well as model UN's but as parlimentarian of my chapter I can't seem to remember much. Plus I have no real info or anything, it's just a title, mostly I just do attendance things. I have this semester up to have the job still and I hope to get at least a folder together of some things for the job. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I went looking for Robert's stuff this past week and came up with 3 copies of the UN charter but no copies of the Rules! LOL
Good tip about standing during meetings James, we have our meetings around square tables with the pres and vps at the head but usually we're always sitting. in hs tho as pres of the debate club i was always standing proud http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I did Model Un in high school and dbeate in college, I didn't learn all that much parliamentary procedure from either http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Don't feel bad. I learned more from student government and more from irritation with student government for getting alot of things wrong http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Tips for the day:

ONLY the presiding officer recognizes a speaker or questioner, even if someone has the floor. It keeps order better.

The presiding officer should always stand through meetings, it gives you a lot more control over the meeting because you are in standing above everyone. Makes it much easier to quiet people also.

BFulton, they're supposed to learn during their pledge period. After all, isn't that what it's for? :D

Ah, but there's a difference between learning it then and being able to remember how to use the finer points of parli-pro later... sometimes refresher courses help!

That be true. I wasn't sure by the context of your post if you meant more in depth than just what the pledges are taught for their pledge meetings.

I'm aware that some fraternities (actually, most CLUBS) who don't have ANY pledge period experience the problem of new members not knowing parliamentary procedures.

Those clubs have one day workshops and stuff -- but honestly and egostacially enough, we former pledges are way ahead of the game when it comes to meeting organization. For some clubs on campus in which some brothers participate outside of the fraternity, they're the ones who run the meetings, because they're the ones who've experienced the procedures and run the meetings smoothly. :D

A refresher course is always good, especially for the parliamentarian or attorney general of the chapter. It helps to know the fine points and voting margins!
