OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!! I know, I am a huge red wings fan too and woke one of my roomates up last night at 3 am by celebrating and yelling. This is a huge trade for us.
Micheal Peca went to the islanders. Lindros is rumored to be traded but hasn't been.
The flyers signed Jeremy Roenick. Other than that, nothing as earth shattering as the hasek deal. I did hear we will try to trade osgood for a good young forward or two. I am just now coming off the celebration mode of getting the six time vezina trophey winner!!!!

Ex-Greek, I know that Detroit is also looking at Turgeon, O'Donnell from Atlanta, and Magilney from NJ. There were talks about Lindross coming to Detroit but with the Koslov/Hasek trade, I don't see it happening now. I think Dallas has made him an offer but I believe he already said he doesn't want to go there. I wonder what they're going to do with Ozzie? Now we have four goaltenders! Maybe they'll trade Ozzie to Atlanta for O'Donnell and a draft pick?

-Turgeon signed with the Stars; brett hull's gone for good then, prob . . .
-The Islanders traded for Micheal Peca, yes, but also for Alexei Yashin - personally, i think these two may be more important than even the Hasek trade - when was the last time the Islanders ever did anything this big? It's been 7 years since they made the playoffs, looks like they're starting to realize it too.
-The Blues traded for Doug Weight - huge deal; w/ Tkachuk, now they don't need Turgeon any more . . .
It looks like it's going to be a crazy year in the NHL - now if only the Bruins get off their asses and do something!

Leslieagd, Odonnell signed with I think Carolina. I would love to have mogilny come to detorit. I heard the latest rumor is that the Philadelphia flyers just offered a 5 year 25 mill. contract to lapointe. I am not so sure the wings would match it, for the price may be a bit much.
Turgeon signed with dallas. Another guy I wanted, Doug weight, signed with STL today. So now it looks like mogilny is the best choice out there for us.
I have heard a rumor of the wings trading osgood to a lesser team, but getting a young forward or two in return. A
As for the lindros deal, The rumor was Lindros for fedorov and aaron ward. The wings gm turned it down saying he didn't want to give up a major player for a player who is injury prone.
Hey ksig, is dafoe going to be back in full form next year? A possible situation I heard was if dafoe did not come back at 100%, the wings would send osgood for that allison guy.

Hey Everyone...I am a huge hockey fan (go Red Wings!) and I watched the draft (I think it was on last weekend?) and there have been some crazy trades going on!
I just found out that the Red Wings traded Slava Koslov to Buffalo for Dominic Hasek (sp?) & a first round draft pick for next year. I was pretty floored! Can some other hockey fans fill me in on some of the big trades to other teams?

LOL!!!!! Winning team, the sens? Heh, regular season is only half of what you want to accomplish. Getting swept out of the first round when you are a two seed is embarrassing. Sorry, we Michiganders like to poke fun at the Canadien loyalty to their teams. 8 years and counting ;-)
Just pulling your leg of course. I am sure you make fun of us (fill in the blanks) down here in hockeytown. The isles might be a winning team in a year or two if their moves pan out.

When did Turgeon and O'Donnell sign??? I never heard that they wanted Ward & Fedrov for Lindros, I thought that was for Jagr? Lapointe said he wants to stay in Detroit so they're still in negotiations...we really need him to stay.

St. Louis Blues lost Turgeon and Reasoner as well as two others. A little said at the lost of Reasoner and Turgeon both, but hopefully what they picked up will help: they inked Oiler's Doug Weight to a 5-year deal. Anyone know much about Weight?

Ex greek , your comments prove how in-depth your hockey knowledge is. If I recall this past post-season Detroit was a number 2 seed that was ousted by a team that barely made the playoffs. In fact, within the last five years half of the #2 vs # 7 matchups went to the lower seeds.
I can't explain how much the team means to the city, the only way to describe it is for you to visit the city and feel it yourself.
This organization is always within the top in the league for attendence, corporate support and has by far the best scouting along with an excellent coaching staff. You wanna know why they choked in the playoffs? Maybe because most of their top players are all between 19-23 (havlat, hossa, phillips, rachunek, redden).
Oh yeah and Detroit they're a model franchise...let's go buy another stanley cup. Team trades away one of the greatest of all times for trying to start a players association.

Well first of all . . . if the B's trade Jason Allison, it's all over, fold the franchise, pack up an Original 8 team b/c that's mental retardation, esp. for Chris Osgood (aka "Shoot from the blue line - 50/50 it's going in if it's playoff time"). But LaPointe is a step in the right direction . . . the B's need some DEEE-fense, and Dafoe to strengthen up those legs . . . groin/hamstring injuries let him play about 40 games a year, and that's not enough when your backup is basically my 16 yr old brother from Des Moines, Iowa.

How in depth my hockey knowledge is eh? Well for one thing, Ottawa has probably the best minor league system. I should know, ouy city has their top minor league franchise. You guys have a star in waiting in goaltender Chiounard down here.
We lost our series too, but we had our top two scorers out. Plus, we all know Fedorov is unreliable when it comes to crunch time. The kings exploited our biggest weakness, age. The loss was embarrasing but what can you do? We did take two games though, how many did Ottawa take? Just curious, I have no hockey knowledge so I wouldn't know.
But don't be bitter about your team not winning anything, or your country for that matter. I am not one of the dumb people who think that we will win it every year. Our team is way too old, though the addition of a 36 year old 6 time Vezina trophey winner might still help. Want proof of why we won't win it again? We signed an old robitaille.
"Let's go buy another stanley cup?" BWHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!! Looks like someone had a case of the mondays! (Office Space) Come back and talk when you win something more than your division.
At least I can admit that we still don't have a chance next year. Colorado is too damn good. But as for you guys, lets see how your younger players produce. Can they improve enough to top jersey? Philly? I say one more year yet.
Hey if you want to continue this, e-mail me. No personal digs at you, just the thought of any canadien's view of the americans 'stealing' every stanley cup since 93.

The federal government was going to allocate lottery revenues to the 6 teams but reneged because public outcry was really bad. The city of Ottawa gave Bryden some municipal tax cuts, but nothing substantial. The province of Alberta is working on something with the wo NHL teams, not sure where that's been heading.
I don't know who will win the Olympics, we'll definitely have a better team this time around. It all comes down to goal tending, just like hasek in nagano, or richter in 1998 - hot goalie makes all the difference.

First of all, I'm not bitter about my team Not winning, it's how they lost. They were swept by a bitter rival, when everyone thought it would be a cake walk. When Ron Maclean asked Pat Burns if Toronto could sweep Ottawa he said there was no chance in hell. What i'm frustrated (and in case of you haven't realized this yet) is that Canadian teams are at a considerable disadvantage vs their american counterparts. Low Can. dollar, property taxes, municipal taxes, etc., all make it very difficult for every canadian team to remain competitive. Canadians don't believe in taxpayer-supported stadiums, most fans do not understand the full business of professional sport franchises. Every year Ottawa has to "trade down" players to cut costs, whether it's a super-star center like Alexei Yashin, or a solid 3rd Defenceman in Jason York (who is a fan favorite, native to the city of Ottawa and wants to play here).
So what happens when the young players are become too expensive to be kept? Are they traded for picks too?
It's because of some of these reasons noted above that Canadian teams haven't been dominating the stanley cups like in the past. Montreal had 7 in the 70s alone.
But at least we can take solace in knowing we'll make it count at the upcoming Olympics.
And no this isn't a case of the mondays (yesterday was a holiday), this is how every die-hard fan up here feels.

I know how you guys feel, I mean after all, our team plays north of Canada. Has the government proposals went thorugh to help these teams out yet? There is no discounting your countrys success over the years, but until the money issues are worked out, it will stay like it is now.
As for the oylmpics, they haven't got it done lately. Everyone knows you will medal, but will you all get gold? At least they didn't trash their hotel rooms like some other country.

First of all, win or lose (as they have every year since 1993) my team is Les Canadiens, so anyone can take potshots at me right away! But I am also Canadian so I have to add my two cents (that would be like four American) to the comment on the US "stealing the cup since 1993" from Canadians. I don't feel this way, totally. For the past two years, Lord Stanley's Cup has made it to Nova Scotia. First with John Sim of the Dallas Stars and then Colin White with the NJ Devils. Both times the city of New Glasgow and the province of Nova Scotia have beemed with pride that two local boys have made it. No one says "yeah well, too bad the Sens couldn't pull it off". Because those boys bringing back the cup to a town that small, only makes ALL the peewee, bantam, midget players in that town want to succeed and play. When there were only 8 teams, not all of them were in Canada! The expansion of the NHL has given many men the chance to play. In return (nowadays) they in turn make a lot of money. Most, give back to their communties, making life easier on a family who can't afford to spend $600 a year on ice time alone, thus fullfilling a childrens dream.
Think about people from the Eastern Block in Europe. They are just happy to play, no matter what team!
As a country we love our culture and feel that the NHL is a part of that. But we can still pride ourselves in the fact that we are the birthplace of hockey, that there are more Canadian players in the NHL then the Americans and Europeans combined, that we are excelling in Womens Hockey, at the Worlds, the World Juniors, the Olympics and that we have Hockey Night in Canada http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif None of that would have been possible without the NHL growing beyond 8 teams, or the financial resources of some big American businessmen, who saw an opportunity and capitalized on it. They are not stealing the cup, they are giving us all a chance to enjoy the game in its full potential.

This thread has been slowing down lately so it's time stir up the controversy...
Lots of Heart while I respect and agree with all of what you've said, I think it ignores the fact that Canada is not dominating hockey like it once was - and that's what's scaring most canadian hockey fans. It isn't our game anymore, for the longest time it was only us vs the russians. Now the NHL makeup is only 53% Canadian, 10 years ago it was 75%.
The expectation level has dropped, plain and simple. When the juniors dominated gold 5 years in a row anything less than first place was unsatisfactory, now just getting a medal is considered an accomplishment.
Hockey is one of the only notable characteristics associated with Canadiana and when our teams go south with just a wimper, it makes me mad that so little ppl in this country care about it.
Ex Greek you said something about Ottawa not winning more than their division? If you're ever at the hockey hall of fame, check the engravings on the cup and you'll see ottawa is on it 5 times http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Hahahaha, that's the only way (as a joke) those teams above have a shot in making the playoffs. They should just take a year off and let the better teams duke it out.
1. Colorado - too much talent, Lacroix knows what's going on.
2. St. Louis - If they ever get a goaltender, they'll be a stanley cup favorite. But because they don't have one yet, they show up at number 2.
3. San Jose - They were in the top 3 last year until all their players got injured. Now their healthy and they young guns will have some more experience under their belt.
4. Detroit - when you buy all your stanley cups, ya gotta do well during the regular season.
5. Vancouver - Loads of upcoming superstars, team will only get better in upcoming years.
6. Dallas - This team is getting really old, with not that many prospects to keep it going. In a few years they'll be garbage unless Hicks throws a lot of money around.
7. L A - insert your comment here.
8. Edmonton - Not much too say here, poor edmonton; holding their breath until 2004.

NJ is always a good team on the East and maybe it's biast, but with Hasek and Robataille added to our great team, I think Detroit has a good shot at the cup. I don't know, there hasn't been a Canadian win in a while so maybe they'll suprise us.

Well first of all, they paid the refs to call a couple of questionalble penalties.
Than they tied rockets to their skates, but that didn't work.
Than they tried to pay canadien players 1000 rubles each to throw the game, but the canadien players said no because rubles mean nothing to them.
And finally, they tried to sneak an extra guy on the ice on a breakaway in the deciding game but their attempt failed when they got an offsides call. The refs figured it out once they saw the russians have six men on the ice plus the goalie.

Ex Greek
- Bravo, kudos to a great answer...
With all the talk of salaries and free agent signings there's a lot of noise being made about what impact rising salaries will have on the NHL and NHLPA.
Here's some good quotes:
'No, don't give us that much money.' Obviously, if they continue to raise the salaries, they must be making money."
and
You go with what people want," Damphousse said. "If you raise the prices and people go for it, you're okay. If people don't buy it, that's when you adjust. That's the limit"
These two quotes were taken from Vincent Damphousse of The Sharks.
And here's another opposing viewpoint by Brian Burke:
I know we can't support the salaries. I know that some of the teams who have spent that money are doing it without the financial capability to pay the money. I'm running my business like a business. I'm going head-to-head with people who are crazy as far as I'm concerned."
I know one of teams that spent crazy money lost $20 million last year," Burke said.
So i ask you, do you think the NHL is playing a destructive path of follow the leader with MLB?
Are we destined to go for another strike?
Should Gary Bettman be replaced with someone who knows what he's doing?

You don't think stuart will make the team? I think he's got a good shot?
Here's my predictions:
Goalies, Cujo and Brodeur will make the team, I think it would be wise to bring in a young goalie (Luongo) as the 3rd since he probably won't see any action anyway.
Defence:
1st pairing: Pronger with MacInnis
2nd pairing: Blake with Jovanovski
3rd pairing: Stuart with Neidermeyer
reserve D: Adam Foote
Up front:
1st Line:
Kariya at left wing, Lemieux at center and Allison at right wing
2nd line:
Arnott at left wing, Sakic at center and Nolan at right wing
3rd line:
Smythe at left wing,Yzerman at Centre, Lindros at right wing
4th Line:
O'Neil at left wing, Peca at centre, Thornton at Right Wing
Those are my picks, we'll see how they differ from gretz'

Yeah if Allison is off the time, watch out for some rioting. There is a lot of connections at work though, i really don't think neiuwendyke and morrow would have been invited if Hitchcock wasn't one of the assistants.

Lindros will be on the team, you watch.
I'm shocked, Jason Allison didn't even get an invite, can someone explain this to me?
Stuart also didn't get an invite even though he's way better than Redden and Morris...christ I don't think these guys know what they're doing.
Geuss I have to change O'Neil as well, how the hell brendan morrow was picked over a guy who scored 41 goals last year I have no idea. Same goes for Thornton, I thought he would have made it because gretkzy wanted him on the team...
I wonder if Team Canada officials will share some of that powder will the rest of us.

Still a good team, but would have been scarier with thornton and allison. If Lindros does make it, but does not get traded this season, look for him to be playing for a career.

Well grezt' said that they have a list of over 40 players so maybe so of the 34 will get cut and others will be added. I mean there's a lot of controversy with who would make it and who wouldn't. But if you check out the www.tsn.ca/nhl (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl) forum by the fans on the Olympic selections it's clear everyone feels Allison should be on the team.

First of all - I am totally happy to see that Alex Tanguay was invited to the try outs (former Halifax Moosehead!) I think with all the NHL "Superstars" getting older, it would be in their best interest to promote players such as Tanguay!
Goalies: Since it is Gretzky making the team, I can see him adding his friends. I belive that it will be Roy (cuz retirement is callin') and Brodeur
Defence: Stevens I think is great and as I said with friends, I am surprised that Macinnis didn't make it alongside Blake.
I also pick Desjardins and Foote
Centres/Wingers: Tough one. Like I already said, I would love to see Tanguay get a spot! My ideal team would then be Arnott, Shanahan, Peca, Fleury (although he has had problems as of late), Lindros (if he would put some effort into it!), Primeau and Nieuwendyke. The problem is that Peca, Lindros and Fleury haven't been on the ice is awhile.
I'm probably totally off, but those are the ones I like!

I still can't believe Allison isn't on the team, just watch him play for the U.S. - deja vue Brett Hull.
We need more goal-scorers (Allison finished 4th last year and O'Neil had 41 goals), that was a major problem last time around. We only beat loser countries like Belarus 5-2 when those games should have been embarrassing for the other team.
Those idiots at Team Canada should ignore personal biases, none of the 5 dallas stars deserve to be on the team.

'Forget the exam, Canucks need you'
UBC backup goalie suits up for Canucks after last-minute injury sparks frantic search
Jack Keating
The Province; with Canadian Press
Wednesday, December 10, 2003
UBC backup goalie Chris Levesque gathers his gear as he prepares to rush down to GM Place for last night's game between the Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins.
CREDIT: Jason Payne, The Province
ADVERTISEMENT
Chris Levesque will probably be tired when he arrives in class for his 8 a.m. geography exam today.
At least he'll have a good excuse -- and a great story to tell.
Levesque, backup goaltender for the University of B.C. Thunderbirds, signed a one-day amateur contract with the Vancouver Canucks yesterday and dressed as the backup to Johan Hedberg against the Pittsburgh Penguins last night.
Starter Dan Cloutier hurt his groin during the morning skate and when the Canucks were unable to recall a goalie from their AHL affiliate in Winnipeg in time for the game, they turned to Levesque.
But first they had to find Levesque, who was nowhere to be found.
"He won't be able to suit up for the Canucks unless we find him soon," said Marc Weber of UBC's athletics department less than four hours before last night's game. "We're scouring the campus and we haven't found him yet."
At about 3:30 p.m., a Province reporter and photographer rushed to UBC to join the search for Levesque, 23, who is in his third year at UBC and winless this season with the T-Birds.
"We've looked everywhere and we can't find him," reported Weber as we arrived on the campus. "If we don't find him soon it will be too late."
The Province caught up to Levesque in the Thunderbirds' dressing room.
He'd only found out that he was to be a hockey Cinderella 20 minutes earlier -- only three hours before game time -- when teammate Casey Bartzen found him studying for his geography final exam he was supposed to take this morning.
"I thought he was pulling my leg when he told me," said Levesque, who is from Port Coquitlam and graduated from Riverside Secondary.
After playing his minor hockey in PoCo, Levesque played three years of Junior A hockey in Manitoba.
"I'm unbelievably excited," he said, hurriedly packing his gear into a duffel bag.
"You don't get an opportunity like this every day."
Levesque said there was always a chance Hedberg could get hurt or kicked out of the game, throwing him into the fray. And for several spellbinding moments in the first period -- with Hedberg flat on the ice after colliding with an opposing player and Canucks coach Marc Crawford unable to suppress a smile behind the bench -- it looked like it might be about to happen. But it was not to be.
"I just talked to my parents and they're going to be coming down to the game," he said. "I've been trying to get a hold of my girlfriend but she's in the midst of studying for exams, too."
Students on campus were excited when told of Levesque's good fortune.
"That's cool, that's really awesome for him," said first-year arts student Kali-Ann Cameron, 18, who plays defence for the UBC women's hockey team. "I'm glad [the Canucks] found him."

Well as the Season is winding to a close things are really starting to heat up. The Eastern Conference is alot of fun to watch right now, with 2 teams tied for first in points (78) and two teams tied for second in points (77) it's anybodys division right now. Ottawa made a great trade for Bondra, Muckler must be one hell of a negotiator.
Does anybody have any predictions about the final 2 weeks before the trade deadline? any idea who may be going where?
I think the Leafs will get Gonchar as it is being rumoured, who they'll send to Washington though, maybe Carlos Coliacovo, who knows?

1) There's been worse incidents with less repercussions
2) His injury wouldn't have been as severe if everyother player on the ice didn't land on him

You're definitely in the minority of hockey fans.....
The only apologist that I have seen on TV has been Tie Domi, a real meathead himself, but even he said it was something that you shouldn't do. Bertuzzi was a complete coward in this attack, jumping a not-so physical guy from behind without giving him a chance to defend himself.... that violates every rule (unwritten) that hockey players follow.... if your going to go after a guy, you let him know and you meet each other like men.... not some pathetic coward like Bertuzzi.
If it was up to me he'd be gone for at least the regular season as well as the play-offs.... partly because of his cowardice and the nature of the attack, but also because Bertuzzi has a history of not being able to control himself, and a deplorable hipocracy regarding his actions (see his comments about the McSorely incident).

See, what you guys are conveniently forgetting of the incident in nature that led to bertuzzi's retaliation.
Moore marked Naslund with an attempt to inflict serious injury. This is why the league is a bag of shit. 15 years ago, a no-name player wouldn't go after the best player in the league. And if anyone says what moore did to Naslund wasn't dirty - i'm sorry, but you obviously haven't played hockey in your life. There was no call on Moore's hit, the league's policing both on the ice and off dropped the ball there. This is what's been happening time and time again, the best players aren't given the respect they deserve, and what happens, the quality of the game suffers because of it. Case in point, look to Havlat, now i don't agree with his response with a cross-check to the face on Recchi. But if any of you watched the game, he was hooked four times in succession without any call and simply got fed up and retaliated. This is the behaviour Lemiuex criticized for years, yet the league doesn't do anything to change it. 'Yes good afternoon, you've reached the NHL, well it appears we're now behind Professional bowling in t.v. ratings so let's introduce ridiculous changes like 3 point victories in a pathetic attempt to revive a game we've lost over the last decade.'
One last point, yes Bertuzzi didn't give Moore a chance to defend himself, but would he have accepted responsibility and faced Todd if confronted - not likely, i'm sure a Colorado player would have stepped in (or maybe an official, lol).

If you can't produce offensively, or defensively, then you need to go play in some industrial league because the NHL is not the place for you.

Look Moore's hit was actually clean (unfortunately the NHL does allow hits to the head), and Naslund was interviewed about the hit last week.... he thought it was a clean hit on him (he had his head down). What Bertuzzi was in no way clean, and was one of the more cowardly things I've seen in hockey... and I've been playing hockey for close to 25 years.

I guess its technically 'avenging' Naslund, but if youve been on a team where a member was hurt by an opposing player, its not unusual for teammates to feel slighted as well
RACooper

That's true.....
Moore was involved in a fight earlier in the game and most likely considered the issue of the Naslund hit dead, because that is usually what happens......

The hit on Naslund should have last garnered a couple of minutes in the sin bin - but it didn't. Bertuzzi should not have done what he did - but he did. The NHL better remember this the next time something like this happens. I am not happy with the NHL decision in that there is no decision. It was the same as before - indefinite suspension. Never in the past have they waited to see the outcome of the player or the criminal investigation. And this is something Vancouver is familiar with - anyone recall the McSorley-Brashear incident.
Now before everyone jumps at me, I agree Todd needs to be booted for the rest of this season and the playoffs. But make up your minds - say he's gone for the whole next season - don't pussy foot around the issue.
I am angry, because this could easily had been our year and one of our players quite possibly took that away from us and that sucks. However Sanderson and Rucinsky looked good last night - our top line may even be more dangerous now - so I am not giving up hope.
I just can't believe how much coverage this thing is getting - and the worst thing about this whole incident - on that same night Linden became the Canucks all time points leader - a pretty awesome accomplishment considering the team has been around almost 35 years. But not one clip on the news or article in the newspaper has said a thing about Linden - and Vancouverites really need to hear that right now because the mood in this city is blue.
Last week people were starting to gear up for playoffs - car flags were starting to increase in numbers... and while we will still be in the playoffs who knows how far we will go. I hope it's still all the way, but I don't know what kind of psychological impact this will have on the team.
It sucks that all the continent's eyes are on the Canucks right now with what is probably the worst thing that has ever happened in hockey. But I am sure they don't know all the amazing, behind the scenes things, about this team, which is sad.
One thing I have learned and realized these last few days is how woven into Vancouver society and culture the Canucks really are...

Did anyone else catch The Score broadcast last night, with the usual geust analyst from the Winnipeg Free Press (scott taylor?). He brought up a lot of good points about the state of the game, basically reiterating mostly what i've said...that the game is fine but the enforcement of the rules is the root of all the problems with the league. He also ripped on Bettman, saying we have a commissioner that should be in the NBA and not NHL.

I didn't read the whole article (just skimmed it because Globe and Mail journalists are long winded and I got bored), but this code is BS. It's okay to play a little dirty as long as you don't seriously hurt the other guy. I don't think so. You want to seek justice. Fine. Be a man and confront the guy face to face.
The NHL has basically said they aren't going to do anything about this problem. So it looks like we're going to have to wait till someone dies before any action is taken. It's a shame.
Fighting is not the problem. It's dirty players that are the problem and the lack of punishment from the NHL that is the problem.

Well I didn't end up at the Giants game saturday, cause my friend gave me tix to the Canucks-Stars game! First game I've been to this season - talk about leaving it to the last minute. It was a fun game - and the Giants advanced to the second round of their playoff series.
Well the Canucks have to make it to round 2, as my tickets are for the 1st home game of round 2. (I wasn't about to pay $187/ticket, so instead I paid $70/ticket to sit waaaaaaayyyyy up in the rafters...)
As soon as we start winning again so does Colorado - bah. I want that division title!

Are you Towel Power Ready?
Towel Power isn't just a Canadian thing, it's a Vancouver Canucks thing! It started with Roger Neilson in '82 and has snowballed into something that virtually every team in the NHL does. The difference is that we know what Towel Power is...we know that it's not just fans waving a white towel in an arena...we know that it's the ultimate way for Canucks fans to support their team through the toughest part of the year, the Stanley Cup playoffs. It's waving a white towel at the tv, it's getting your jersey on before every game, it's even decorating your car, window or house to show everyone just how big a fan you are! We are only a week away from the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs...and we want to make sure you're ready to cheer your Canucks on to victory. (insert knock on wood and other superstitions here).

After just one game Canucks-Flames have a total of 16 minors - 32 minutes of powerplaying and penalty killing. I can't believe that slightly more than half of lasts night's game was played at uneven strength. Thank god the Canucks crappy power play decided to wake up.

Avs in control versus Stars, so far....but this was the same situation last year...up 3-1 against the Wild, and lost in game 7. Game 5 is must win for Avs.
Wings need to get going - no Stanley Cup playoffs are as exciting unless you can get an Avs-Wings series in it. At first, I thought the Wings would be favored should they both meet, but, I'm starting to get cautiously excited that the Avs have found their offense again.
Predictions: Avs over Stars in 5 or 6 (Modano might get lucky)
Flames over Canucks in 7
San Jose over Blues in 6
Wings over Preds in 7
Leafs over Sens
Boston over Habs

The Canucks should come with a warning sign that says:
Canuck fans should not have high blood pressure, be faint of heart, suffer from severe stress or heart problems...
My God, what is up with this team??? Why do they have to have their backs up against the wall to win???
A 4-0 lead and Calgary comes back and then Vancouver wins it in - not single - not double - but triple overtime.
Anyways just got back from driving up and down Robson - you would have thought we just won the series... and we are heading out to the airport shortly...

So you all heard about how some jerk stole my car flag (probably some Flames fan j/k) and I was so upset, especially since Vancouver just lost and was now down 3-2 in the series with a do or die game 6.
Well my boyfriend said if the Nucks win game 6 he would buy me a new car flag.
I was out all day today and by the time I arrived home this evening my boyfriend had gone out, but there was a Canucks car flag waiting for me in the front hall.
Of course I called him to thank him for the flag - however, he told me it wasn't his doing. Of course I wasn't sure what he was talking about... apparently my friends, who's house I was at on thursday when my flag was stolen, felt bad and bought me a new one.
Ok, they don't live in the best area of Vancouver, but it certainly wasn't their fault my flag was stolen, but nonetheless they still bought me a new flag.
I was so touched by their gesture. Boy I am such a lucky person.
Just be happy it wasn't last year the car flag was stolen, I remember they were SO hard to find! My friends drove out for the 2nd round from Edmonton and we spent an entire day stalking Canadian Tires for them lol. Finally found them at like 8 at night, and they were selling so fast...
Then after a game, driving on the Barnet Hwy, my slightly drunk friend Wendy was holding the flag out the window and let it go at like 80km/h lol. And like the rabid car flag hunters we are, they pulled over and wandered around the highway looking for it until they found it lol.
No more car flags for Wendy lol. They also discovered you can't drive from Vancouver to Hope and have it come out looking like it did when you started lol.

I had the same thing happen to me in high school, except my friend wasn't drunk. He was hot and rolled down the window, completely forgetting about my Red Wings flag. I pulled over on a Michigan left turn-around and he jumped out...then I drove around and picked him up! Those things do get tattered pretty easily. No more flags for me either!

Wow...only missed one prediction so far! Who'd a thunk the habs could pull it out in 7!
Next round is:
Avs/Sharks (good series here...might go full 7, as they have in the past, I'll have to show my bias and pick the Avs here, but either team can win this one)
Wings/Flames: I'd like to see the Jerome Ingila show continue, but, it's doubtful...though not impossible. Wings in 6.'
Tampa/Montreal: First glance says Tampa should win this easy, but, same thing was said about Boston, too. Could go the distance...if Theodore stands on his head, and the acting goes away, Montreal in 7.
Flyers/ Leafs/Ottawa winner: Flyers looking very good - pick them in 6.

Oh, course, I just about threw up after Jarome missed the empty netter to have it become a Canuck goal 4 passes later!!
With 15 years between series wins, Calgary whooped it up last night - a friend of mine who lives along 17th Avenue (which dead ends at the Saddledome) said traffic was a standstill for over an hour for 30 blocks down 17th, with folks screaming, honking and cheering...you would have thought they won the Cup again (which was the day after my 18th birthday - May 25, 1989)

I hope you are willing to shell out both an arm and a leg for tickets. Standing room seats generally run about 300 bucks a piece from the scalpers, and for platnum seats you could be looking at up to 6,000 bucks a seat if you buy them on the street. Buying from a ticket agency like NeonPi suggested is probably the best idea, but even then they are gonna cost you alot of money. Your best bet is to save the 5 hundred plus dollars, goto a place like Wayne Gretzkys bar (classy establishment) or The Peel Pub (Not so classy, but cheap beer) spend the money on booze and watch the game on the big screens. The atmosphere there will rival that of the Air Canada Centre.

Thanks for the ideas.
I checked several ticket sites, and they ranged from $300 to $800.
May resort to the Peel Pub.
Do you know what it's close to?
I was a season ticket holder when the Flames were in Atlanta in the real old Days, and was at the opening night when the Thrashers and Phillips Arena debuted.
Hopefully the new Thrashers owners will keep improving the club, but all their comments so far have been about basketball.

Frankly, it's a crap move, but it either Muckler or Martin.
Martin would do well (is he so desired now that OTT will be paying him for that contract extension OTT gave him before the playoffs) to go to Chicago, and fix that system up and down. Back in day, OTT used to be on cheap street, and Martin pulled them up. Chicago could use that help BIG TIME (I'm a sucker for Original Six).
And how about those Flames??? My phone kept ringing off the hook after the OT goal "Did you see that? Awesome, eh?" ??? Love the friends and family - it's like I'm there...
Of course, I'm trying to convinve the hubby to drive to DET for the game tomorrow, but he's scoffing at the $140 US a tix price ("Honey, we ARE trying to buy a house"). House, schmouse - I wanna see my FLAMES!!!

This is truly exciting - I don't feel bad anymore about the Flames knocking out Vancouver in the first round.
Here are some fun facts:
Last time a Canadian team made it to the Stanley Cup Final - 10 years ago - the Canucks
Last time a Canadian team won the Cup - 1993 - the Habs
Since Vancouver has returned to the playoffs (the 2000-01 season, after a 7 year hiatus) every team that has knocked of the Canucks in Round 1 has gone on to win the Stanley Cup:
2000-01: Winners - Colorado - knocked out Vancouver in the 1st round
2001-02: Winners - Detroit - knocked out Vancouver in the 1st round
2002-03: OK Vancouver actually made it to that 2nd that year...
2003-04: Don't want to jinx Calgary, but who did they knock out in the 1st round... and look where they are...
Calgary set 2 NHL records last night - Martin Gelinas became the 1st NHL player (or tied) to score the most series winning goals and the Flames became the 1st NHL team to knock of three division champs in a row... Vancouver, Detroit and San Jose...
And I hope they win, especially if they play Tampa Bay. While Tampa Bay is an amazing team, somehow a Stanley Cup party in Calgary seems like it would be a hell of a lot better than a Stanley Cup party in Tampa Bay... but I could be wrong ;) :p
And I start summer vacation next week and it's only a 10 hour drive to Calgary hmmm.... I may go have me some Stanley Cup fun yet!

Despite the fact that Philly is going to make us come back to the Forum and kick their @ss in game 7 (whatever, it just makes for a more dramatic victory), I have great faith that if...no, WHEN the Lightning win the Stanley Cup, Tampa will throw them a party that will rival that of the Buccaneers after they won the Super Bowl last year. We will have a parade through downtown Tampa for our awesome hockey players, just like we did for the Bucs. The whole area is so excited about the Lightning going all the way this year!
GO BOLTS!

heheheh why thanks. I can't believe I'm talking to a female who knows so much about hockey. If you can down a molson faster than me, we're getting marrried.
Tampa WISHES they could be the Sea of Red. The only reason they passed out the shirts last night was in response to the sea of red, which consists of fans who shelled out probably more than 50 bucks for a jersey.
Plus, I hear the different chants at Flames games...in typical American fashion, the PA guy needs to play the organ to get the crowd going the way Calgary just starts the "GO FLAMES GO"., Very soccer-like high school crowd...and I love it, and hope Darryl's boys feed off of that.
Don;t get me wrong, I'll always be an Avalanche fan, but it's great to see a city rally around a team like that.

I love hockey. To me it's the greatest game in the universe. Not only am I a fan, but I play too (and 100% hetero!)
And I can guarantee you that those flames fans shelled out more than 50 bucks for those jerseys. Cheap ones start around 80 bucks (that's Canadian) and depending on store and if you want letters on them and how popular they are you could easily spend $200 on a jersey ( my brothers Leaf Jersey was $120 bucks without a name and his Buffalo Sabres jersey with Stu Barnes' name was $140)

Has anyone seen this yet - it has to be a joke - if you read in between the lines it points to two of Canada's gripes: Western alienation and the separation of Quebec...
OTTAWA WILL AWARD STANLEY CUP TO QUEBEC
The federal government today announced it would award the STANLEY CUP to
Quebec, if Alberta's CALGARY FLAMES win the competition. The cup will go,
instead, to Quebec's MONTREAL CANADIENS, who were defeated in the early
rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Prime Minister Paul Martin said the
hockey series was "only a guideline," and non-binding. He conceded that
CALGARY might have been the best hockey team, "but we have to look at what's
best for Canada."
"We have to support Canada's hockey industry, which is centered in
Montreal," said the Prime Minister. "Montreal is in the best position to
take full advantage of the Stanley Cup." He said the decision to overrule
the playoff results was "difficult and painful," but that national interests
had to prevail over petty "regional considerations."
Loss of the coveted trophy left most of Alberta seething with rage. "It's
another example of Quebec getting the goodies and the West getting the
shaft," said Ted Byfield. Indignant Quebec MP's who lobbied long and hard
for the Stanley Cup vehemently denied that the decision had anything to do
with politics. "It's not as if the West isn't getting its fair share of
federal support. We've announced the Lloydminster upgrader eight or nine
times. And let's not forget about all that rain for Western farmers this
spring."
Quebec Industry Minister dismissed Western complaints as "anti-French
hysteria from Alberta dinosaurs." "Quebec absolutely deserves this," he
said. "The MONTREAL CANADIENS have extensive experience as Stanley Cup
champions, while the CALGARY FLAMES have little to none. Sure, CALGARY won
the series with a couple of fluke goals and lucky saves, but the CANADIENS
have proven themselves over the long haul. If we're denied the Stanley Cup
now, it could only rejuvenate Quebec separatism and threaten the integrity
of all of Canada."
The Quebec premier was delighted to see the cup go to MONTREAL. He said the
trophy will be re-engraved with its new name "La Coupe Stanley" to comply
with Quebec sign laws.
