Onto a happier note...
BASEBALL season is here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo-hoo!! I love the San Francisco Giants. Who do you guys like, and who do you predict/want to win it all?
I want my Giants to win, b/c I think it's time to finally win the Ring!! Otherwise I think the Yanks have a pretty good shot.

I'm a Yankees fan!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
You just gotta love Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
As for the Giants, Newbie, they're my "West Coast" team that I would root for. But if you guys were to play the Yanks, it's Yanks all the way baby!! But Teh Giants have some hotties, too: J.T. Snow, Shawn Estes, etc.

I know I know..it was all "Hail to the Yankees", but the NY Mets have the support of the entire state of Hawaii.
Benny Agbayani is a local son, and they even named a coffee brand after him!

(Yankees fans fill in expletive here, and stop reading . . . )
Growing up, i was a HUGE Red Sox fan - i'm the only guy from the midwest who likes neither the bears nor the cubs. Anyway - not lookin so good for us right now, Nomah's getting surgery tomorrow and we're currently starting craig grebeck and shea hillenbrand as our left side infield . . . doesn't matter, as Pedro will still dominate the absolutely awful Orioles tomorrow, we could be looking at the second opening-day no hitter ever . . . ; )
Anyway - my other team growing up was the A's (Bash Brothers forever!), they're looking real good this year, so maybe i have that going for me . . . eh we'll see

Hockey playoff: My team suck, suck big time. In case you are wondering, it's the NY Rangers. Hey, maybe we could get close to .500 next year. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

As I said earlier, I will always love the Giants forever, but I also root individual players!!
I root for Derek Jeter, Andy pettitte, El Duke, Nomar Garciaparra (sorry Rob that he will be out for some time! Do you know when he might be back?), and that's it. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I rooted for the Yanks last year against the Mets in the Subway Series. Arya, did you guys get anyone of interest this year?
I do not root for any of the NL players except for current Giants and past Giants! The NL is my enemy LOL http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
And the AL will be when we finally win the NLCS hopefully this year!!!!!
Oh and I absolutely, totally, 200 percent HATE the Dodgers. I do feel sorry for the fans, though. Gary Sheffield is such a loser, whining about not getting enuff money! Sheesh...Why can't ppl be classy these days like Derek Jeter, who gladly accepted his money...

Alex Gonzales is quite the hot baseball player. I must agree. It was crappy when he got sent back to the minors, but my baby is back and as pretty as ever http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif .
The Jays lost a bit of momentum after winning two world series in a row, but they're kicking butt again. Watch out, Toronto is BACK!!

BTW, I LOVE college baseball! Unfortunately, college baseball isn't televised much, so it isn't as "available" as MLB. Too bad...college baseball is really fun to watch http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Nomar's out for 2-4 months - probably having surgery today. Back between the allstar break and, well, august - probably earlier (as he has a history of returning back from injury too fast . . . ), we'll see though. And yeah, i'm pretty f-ing bitter.
Anyway - Pedro takes the mound in t-minus 3 hrs . . . beer's in the fridge (right next to the playoff hopes huh?), and all will be well as we go over .500 for possibly the last time for the season! j/k, it won't be that bad . . . i hope!

FENWAY . . .
The BEST park in the world - still unique, all the history (pesky's pole, the red seat ted williams hit w/ the 500+ ft home run, pudge fisk waving it fair, the monster ...), it's amazing - it's like a freakin pilgrimage for me every time i go, and i live (literally) right around the corner. anyway - drop the nickel on ya there

And KSigRC, I'd have to say that Fenway is a very unique park! I've actually seen the majority of my major league games there (I have friends in Boston who I visited frequently!) I love the "monster"!
And only at Fenway would you sit next to a guy who's so drunk he orders hotdogs for him and his "friend" (FYI...we were sitting next to the Green Monster!) This guy ordered two dogs cause he said the Green Monster was hungry! LOL! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Only in Fenway baby! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
I did only go to Fenway when the Sox were playing the Jays though (and they won the majority of the time too! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif)

2 thangs:
1. Don't forget about the astros - they sucked last year, but they have some sick players coming into their prime, and brad ausmus is a key pickup - and good luck to rick ankiel, such a sad story . . . he was pretty sick himself
2. i concede NOTHING to the yankees! EVER! not that i'm bitter or whatever . . .

Don't ever concede to anyone--I think that each team in the MLB has a shot at it...that's why the start of the new season is the best...a clean new slate...although some teams definitely have the edge http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Ankiel threw 5 wild pitches in a game in the NL playoffs last year - he's been having control problems since. He's gotten better since then, and is scheduled to start coming up here . . . hopefully he's over it, he's potentially one of the best young pitchers in the game.

Doing my best "chop" cheer now!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif GO BRAVOS!!! Love the braves....I just gotta LOVE my Chipper!
I cheer for the Yanks too because its my daddy's team - we root for both, but no other team, professional, college, or otherwise can compare to my Braves!
By the way - I am a HUGE tv talker -- I will coach the entire game (much to the pissiness of my husband who insists that Bobby Cox can't hear me, much less care what I have to say), but daddy taught me to coach early on, and I LOVE IT! I am trying to coach my hubby's softball team, but he is worried I will pull a Bobby Knight on them! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
Anyone remember my embarrassing story I posted about being at the Braves/Mets game in NY? If you didn't catch that one, basically daddy and I were in town and SO EXCITED that the Braves were playing the Mets. So we got GREAT seats just in front of 3rd base (and its Chipper's rookie year) and the Braves are dogging the Mets (and Chipper hit his first homer) so I am just cheering like the devil (ALL alone - my loud Southern drawl echoing throughout the stand) and I keep hearing some loud mouth behind me yelling (in a HUGE yankee accent): "Shuddup! Shuddup!" -- well finally after a few innings, I couldn't control myself (think Bobby Knight again) and I stood up turned and screamed at the TOP of my lungs "I'll Shut Up when that score changes!" -- much to my dismay I find a vendor standing there with a cart full of drinks....he was yelling "SODDDAAAA! SODDDAAA!" -- I was WAY embarrassed and couldn't have sunk any lower in that seat if I tried! Daddy and I were afraid we'd be attacked before we got out of there http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif -- Anyway, just a tee-hee for all you die hard baseball fans! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Chipper Jones rocks. I met him once, when he played for Richmond. That it was I don't like Atlanta too much, everytime we get someone good, they steal them from us. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif I know that were the farm team, and thats how its suposed work, but still... so anyway, Chipper should get traded to either the Yankees so I can root for him here, or the Dodgers so I can root for him when I go off to be a movie star.

Hey y'all!
Ksig, poor Ankiel. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif Yes, I know about those 5 wild pitches that he threw in the NL playoffs--I was actually watching the game...and though I don't like the Cards, I felt so bad for him. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif That really hurts any rookies' confidence. He seemed like a really good player..I hope that everything goes well for him soon!!!! I always like to root for young players. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
AXO Alum, that is so funny!! I'm glad that you didn't get into any trouble from those Yankee fans!!
My poor Giants last night--we were on a roll (after sweeping the Padres!! YEAH!) but last night we lost bad to our nemisice (sp?), the Dodgers--10-1. Yuck. BUT, I'm kinda p.o'd b/c it's pretty obvious that my beloved pitcher, Shawn Estes, was tipping off his pitches, and so the Dodgers cheated...and that's why they ran big w/the victory.
(Last season, Estes only allowed 11 homers thru the WHOLE season!!! Yesterday, he allowed 4 hr's, in one game. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif I love Shawn--he better get better for me soon! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif)

I want to start a "What I Love About Baseball" section!!! So here goes, and please add to it! thanks!
What I Love about Baseball:
-When you see players hosting underprivileged kids, or sick patients...and you see how happy those kids are!!!
-When you meet another fan of your team, and you INSTANTLY connect w/each other--though you are both strangers!
-The emotion you feel when your team wins the game in the bottom of the ninth, or in extra innings.
-How elated the announcers are when your team has just won incredibly...and how that elation just rubs off on you.
-When your team clinches a title, and you are just jumping up and down, up and down, and it just seems that everything is great in the world!
-When a player makes a klutzy move (i.e., slips 3 times but still runs home to WIN the game! ex: Calvin Murray of the Giants a few days ago...incredible game) to show that even the players are all human.
-After the players make the klutzy move, they laugh it off and have a grand 'ol time--to show that they still have the little kid in themselves
-How united the fans are at the game. You all are strangers, but you feel like hugging them after an emotional win
-The chills you get after you reach the postseason, and your team was written off by those da*n sportswriters and everybody, who thought your team had "no chance." And you PROVE them WRONG!!!! (Happens EACH year to my Giants.)
-Being at a ball park w/crazy fans--and forgetting all your worries
-When you see a sea of white (the fans are using their rags) rooting on the Giants.
-When you see, or hear on the radio, a milestone (500 HR's, no-hitters, perfect games, etc.)
-When a player has gone through so much personally (family matters), and comes back with 2 HR's--and seeing them cry w/tears of happiness. (ex: J.T. Snow a few years back.)

Oh I have some more!
-Basking out in the wonderful sunshine while taking in the game
-the world-famous Garlic Fries, only available at Pac Bell!
-how you're a kid again at the park
-how Baseball is the OLDEST sport...America's pasttime!!
-how, if the gov't had to choose ONE sport, Opening Day of Baseball would become a National Holiday, just b/c it's Baseball, baby!! (I have seen discussions of how Opening Day should be a National Holiday--I'm all for it, most of my classmates just cut school and go to the game!!)

Aww newbie,
That's so sweet. I feel the exact same way about college basketball season. There's nothing like sitting in the student section, listening to the "front row lunatics" crack on the other team, standing up the entire game, yelling so much at the refs that you're hoarse for 2 days, and seeing the PMAC packed with a sea of purple and gold (god I wish it was November) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Awww, newbie, what a terrific list...had me smiling all the way!! Baseball is DEFINITELY the best sport out there...no question! Because:
-there's nothing like 7th inning stretch
-there's nothing like Fan Picture Day when you can get out on the field and take pics w/the hotties http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
-there's no other sport which has somuch history...and so many legends...Babe Ruth, Juan Marichal, Willie Mays...etc. etc.
-all those funny superstitions! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
-there's nothing like the smell of spring and summer...w/the freshly mowed grass http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
-there's nothing like rowdy fans who are rooting against the rival team and the rival fans
Oh yeah, and there's nothing like seeing some players with the socks pulled up high...that is so cute IMO!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

This seriously might be my favorite topic ever! amazing . . .
-I love just sitting in the stands - the game is so much bigger than any one person, so much tradition and history, i just love the feeling of being there . . . best thing in the world. In the 'not-sex' catagory of course.
-nothing better than watching the great players - pedro had 16 k's in 8 innings, 3 hits today, he's sick. watching guys like him, pudge rodriguez, a-rod, future hall-of-famers playing the best game - it's great.
-the stories - guys like "Govanah" lou merloni, from framingham mass playing for the sox. It was his dream growing up, and he's getting to do it as a job. that's just amazing
-poetic justice - one time i watched nolan ryan toss a no-hitter, he struck out the last batter in the 9th to finish it off. That's just brilliant - the all-time K leader punching a guy out for the no-no.
-history, like rickey henderson breaking all sorts of records, no-hitters and perfect games, craig biggio going 5-5 on opening day to drop off the list of most hits w/out having 5 in a game, stuff like that. it's hard to realize the fact that rickey was probably the best leadoff hitter ever, because we watched him while he was doing it.
-and another form of history - the great players of the past. Babe ruth was the babe, best power hitter probably ever - but he might have been the most effective left-handed pitcher ever as well (think koufax, but throwing 350 innings a year) . . . then there's nap lajoie, rogers hornsby, mickey mantle, all those great names and amazing stories; i find that stuff so amazing.
-the fact that you can just chill at the park - we go whenever we can, and definitely you can just kick it with your brothers for a couple of hours. it's the best - some great ballpark stories . . .
-hating the yankees, and coming up w/ all sorts of statistical evidence about why they suck (aka jeter being rated as the worst defensive SS in the american league by Rob Neyer, etc) - rivalries are sweet
I could come up with about a million more - but i think i'll save some

Rob, tell us some more!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif hehe
how about...
-watching a special segment yesterday following the news...that honored baseball's greats--the Say Hey Kid, Joltin' Joe...
-Watching the Say Hey Kid (Willie May's) highlights...including the one that is so famous (catching the ball in his cap)
-Listening to Lon Simmons, back in the 1960's, calling the home runs w/"AND TELL IT GOODBYE!!!" and to think that Lon Simmons is still an occasional Giants broadcaster today, still using the "Tell it Goodbye!"
-Watching the beautiful Closing Ceremony of the old ballpark, and bringing in the NEW ballpark!!
-how only baseball players could play almost every day for half a year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-listening to the famous calls of old--from announcers like Russ Hodges (sp?), to the famous calls of today--like the Yankees announcer, who goes "AND the Yankeees win!! The Yaannkees win!"
-seeing yesterday's news, w/Pedro having 16 K's!!! WOW.
-and then, seeing Randy Johnson, of the AZ Diamondbacks, get hit hard---YEAH!! Sorry I hate the D'backs--plus, Johnson was the one whose fastball hit lovely J.T. Snow's face in '97. Well, it also proves that Baseball is an up and down game--that's what makes baseball great! Anyone can be a hero, and anyone can fail!

OH--and there's NOTHING like the feeling when you ask for an autograph!!
It was July 22,1999--me and my friend had gotten seats 6 ROWS BEHIND THE DUGOUT!! (Courtesy of my mom's connections.) WELL, before the game, I was so excited--saw some of my fave players. Well, some just waved to me and acknowledged me. Some came over and shook hands with me, saying they were glad i was a fan, and that they need more kids to be as excited as I was....LOLOLOL!!
Anyway, finally I had the nerve to ask Wilson Delgado (a rookie then) of the Giants (well, he's since been traded) for an autograph. I rolled over my ticket by way of a pen (I attached the pen to the ticket, so it could be rolled over to him, since the top of the dugout is separating us). WELL, wouldn't you know it! The ticket was stuck--in the middle of the top of the dugout! So here I was, unable to reach it, unless I were to jump off and get it--which would be stupid, b/c then I would be ejected from the park. Or, Delgado could reach over and try to get it.
So he tries to reach it--and fails. Well, here I am, getting all sad, b/c my ticket is gone, and my autograph hopes are kinda gone too. Delgado disappears momentarily, I'm shocked. I say to my friend, "Hey! Where is he going????!!!" Then Delgado reappears, smiling. He says to me, "Don't worry!" (in his accent hehe.) He uses a bat that he got out to roll the ticket towards him. He signs the ticket and rolls it back to me. THEN, you will not believe this! He gives me his bat!!!!! Yep, I'm a Wilson Delgado fan for life now! You don't know how much it meant to me--especially since I was so excited--first time sitting so close to the players! I LOVE BASEBALL!!

Good points. I used to live in Chicago, and I went to Wrigley many times. Now I live in St. Louis (the best baseball town in America) but I still give props to Wrigley. I was never really a Cubs fan, but you can't beat the atmosphere there.

Cool story: one of my DZ sisters is married to a guy who Chipper has his autograph contract with. I'm sure that Newbie and other baseball fans saw Barry Bonds' 500th HOMER the other day! What a wonderful sight, what a wonderful feat--that man is amazing. Totally on fire...hit his 501st yesterday--on a tear! Baseball is simply the world's greatest sport http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. Nothing like the magic of 500 HRs, no-hitters, perfect games, etc.!

SO...how are all your teams doing now??????
My Giants, sadly http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif, are not doing that well on this current road trip...lost a LOT of heartbreakers...
HOWEVER, we are only 1/2 game outta 1st place! The NL West is the best division in all of baseball (most competitive, every team in the NL WEst is above .500), but of course, we don't have any real stand-out, awesome teams in the NL West though.
Right now--the only bright spot for the struggling Giants is, who else, but BARRY BONDS...wow, that man is just AWESOME. I cannot believe that I am so lucky as to watch him play. I am sooo happy that I am fortunate enough to be a Giants fan...to watch Bonds hit HR after HR, field wonderfully, steal bases, etc. etc. He seems un-human almost!!!!!!!
He's hit 7 HRs in the last 6 games!!!! They were all bombs, too! Superman or what, huh?!!
Now my Giants better start playing better!! Our pitching has not been good, and our defense could get better. thankfully we are only 1/2 game outta first.
Next up...Arizona. Yuck. We're gonna be facing some TOUGH pitching (Schilling, Randy Johnson, etc.)

OH yeah, are any of you as surprised as I am, how there is a shifting of power???
NY mets and the Braves are doing horrible...though the Braves are doing better. Philadelphia Phillies are first place in the NL East. Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins, and Seattle Mariners are doing great, first place in their divisions! Is that surprising to any of you??!! It's downright scary to me. Seattle seems almost un-human, too. They have only like 8 losses???!!
And the A's (who were supposed to be good), are last place, 11 games out of first in the AL West.
And the SD Padres, who were supposed to be pretty bad, are above .500 and are on a roll these days, it seems.
OH, and the annoying Dodgers are in 1st place, I hate to admit it. I'm pretty surprised...but I don't think it'll last..they've had just too many changes w/their players, managers, coaches, etc. Oh well, the Giants will kick their butts (and all the rest of the NL teams! haha!) soon, we'll be in 1st the rest of the way!!!!
Very surprising '01 MLB Season so far, though!!

newbie -
yeah, the giants are eating it right now - they're only averaging more than an error a game though, so that's not too bad . . . ; ) they'll do better though, but how much do they miss ellis burks and bill mueller?
Anyway - Red Sox nation is happy - we're still rollin along. Manny is on pace to break the all-time RBI record, Veritek hit 3 jacks today, Pedro's pure insanity - all this w/out Nomar too. it's awesome - enough bragging about the sox though
The 'shifting balance of power' thing is definitely a little wack, no one predicted that - although the cubs are in 3rd now, after losing 7 in a row, and the cards are back on top so that's more 'normal'. The NL East just sucks - the Phillies' record isn't that good, but since you play more w/in your division this year they get to beat up on the mets and marlins, and even the braves until recently. The Twins just have amazing pitching, and Seattle's just been on a roll for like 40 games. Oakland will rebound though - they've been playing well lately, and their pitchers are unreal (like the Twins). Anyway - golf and baseball are the summer for me, so any time you wanna run baseball smack i'm up for it, peace'

Rob--youi're awesome! I love talking baseball with you! You're very hard-core I see http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. Well, I should be studying for Soc..but what the heck http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I love baseball so much anyway!
Thanks for the update about how the Cubbies are doing--I had no idea that they had slipped into 3rd! I heard from Media people, Scouts, etc. (though sometimes they aren't very reliable at all!!) that supposedly if you were to pick the best team in the NL right now...it would be the STL Cards. They're supposedly the best out of the mediocre NL this year http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. Now, I'm still shocked as to how come the Phils/Twins are doing so well...but hey, it goes to show you that money can't buy everything!! Actually, I'm kinda glad then that the PHils and Twins are on top--it will be good for their cities and for their management, and fans. b/c I bet you that they have a low payroll--so it goes to show that not every team has to have a 90,000 payroll to do well! Plus last season I heard how there were rumors that baseball would move out of cities like Minnesota, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, etc. Do you know how well Kansas City is doing?
I know that TB is really bad though...I have no clue though as to which players they have...but I have heard that they are VERY willing to trade their players away! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Maybe the Giants will steal some top-notch talent away from TB or another team http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif, our General Manager Brian Sabean is a whiz...always gives us great trades...hopefully he'll deliver this year, too! Last season he got us Tim Worrell (Pitcher) for Billy Mueller...and though we miss Billy terribly...Tim has done a great job for us this year! Though recently he has been worked a LOT...so he has been struggling just a bit...
Yes, we in SF miss Billy and ELlis terribly...especally our dear Billy...you know, though, I feel terrible for Russ Davis (who has replaced Billy), b/c he is constantly booed after making an error or an out when batting. A lot of our fans mention Billy, and Russ davis of course is not too thrilled about that.
I think my Giants only have like a 60 K payroll if I'm correct. I really wish it was higher though!!! YOu know what, Rob? I really can't wait for the July 31 Trading Deadline--I know this sounds really mean, but I REALLY want Russ Davis and Alan Embree TRADED AWAY, AWAY!!! They have really done nothing for our team lately. Of course they have all contributed at some point...but it just doesn't seem to be working, ya know?
I"m so sorry to keep on rambling about my team!! But it's really cool how you're on the East Coast, and how you know a lot about the Giants, even though you're not an SF fan. Most ppl don't know a lot about our team...they only think about LA, ATL, NY, etc.! Also--please feel free to tel me more about Boston and how your Sox are doing...I'm interested to know! I have a crush on Nomar http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. haha. how is he doing now?
Oh yeah if any of you MLB fans out there are voiting for the All-Star game...please VOTE for Barry Bonds (left field...CANNOT say enough about this man...what a star!! on an unhuman HR tear of late!), Rich Aurilia (shortstop...I think he has the highest batting AVG in all of the NL (some ridiculously high number like .394 or something like that! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif), J.T. Snow (1st base...have you seen him play defense? WOW!), and Jeff Kent (2nd base...what a gritty player!)
They are all Giants. If you do vote for them, THANK YOU graetly! I wanna see them at the Game http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. Oh yeah--who else should be voted for (deserves to go)?

BOO I hate Arizona. Sorry...but their fans just piss me off. Jeering and jeering at the ejections of my beloved player j.T> snow and the ejection of my manager Dusty Baker http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif.
Those frickin umpires can't even call a rightful HR...J.T. obviously hit it FAIR, and the umps called it FAIR at first but changed their mind saying it was FOUL after seeing that all of AZ was exclaiming that it was foul. That darn umpire Charlie Relaford. *shaking head* Ughh that ump has like something against the Giants or something...i swear. J.T. and Dusty simply ARGUE about the umps' calling of the plays--and good ol' Charlie Relaford can't handle a little dissagreement???!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif So he just decides to take it upon himself to throw them outta the game. What ever happened to checks and balances of power? Our umps need it sometimes! J.T. only threw a bat on the ground...and the umps think of it like he spit on them or something http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif
We always seem to get into some brouhaha with Charlie Relaford, BTW . When he comes to Pac Bell to umpire--I can almost bet y'all that there will be some "excitement" shall I say.. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif
back to the game...I want us to KICK the D'BACKS' butts! I hate them as much as I do Los Angeles and NYM and Atlanta http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif (though no offense to any of you GCers out there!)
But my man BARRY BONDS is the lone "shining star" (haha) in this game so far...hitting YET ANOTHER HR today. If he hits another one--he will be setting 2 new records in the books! He has already set one record this week, I think...just an amazing tear he's on!

newbie - love ya dude, but that JT Snow HR was definitely foul - on the replay you can see the ball in front of the foul pole . . . however, snow did impress me by performing a solid bat-toss after being gated - nice touch JT
anyway - sox lost today to the f-ing yankees - shut down by andy pettite. Manny had 2 RBI though - he's up to 55, well on his way to hack wilson's record of 190, and the sox are still a half-game ahead with pedro throwin tomorrow. Overall, they're having a decent year - although manny's knocked in 25% of the team's runs, that's not good - the other guys need to step up. Nomar's cast is off soon i think (before I came home, a bunch of my friends ran into him - apparently he's rehabbing at BU, so any of you ladies mad in love with him, he's doing rehab 3 blocks from the kappa sig house at boston university), after that it's probably 1 to 2 months, hopefully he doesn't rush back and hurt himself again.
Bonds is a stud, yeah - but look at his RBI: he has like 40 right now, and 24 are HIM from HRs! That's the big reason they're not doing better - if all of those were 3-run home runs, they'd be 33-10 right now like the mariners. Marvin Bernard's ass needs to get on base, actually everyone but aurelia needs to get on base.
(Can you tell I don't have a job for the summer yet? some labs need to call back . . . )
Anyway - the best teams in baseball right now, in my opinion? All are AL: Mariners, Twins, Indians. After that, the cards, yanks, sox, and phillies are all pretty close, and if the NL west ever stops beating up on each other than any of those teams could get hot (esp the dodgers, b/c of pitching, and the giants, b/c of hitting).
One last note: bonds has more HRs at this point in the year than Mark McGuire did at this time during the season he hit 70 homers . . . food for thought (and newbie i guess)
peace,

I still remember last season in the playoffs where you guys beat us...it was a good series though, just I hated the outcome of it!
The Mets are currently 19-27... not exactly wonderful, but I suppose it could be worse. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll start doing better. The fact that they lost their best pitcher isn't helping them http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

I LOVE talking about baseball (bet y'all can tell http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif), thanks for letting me! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
Rob--I'm just afraid that Barry's gonna be traded (scary thought isn't???) or signed w/another team after this season http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. While I love his HRS, I just realized after reading sev. articles recently that that only makes his worth upped a whole lot...and I have to admit...the Giants org. CAN be somewhat "cheap" sometimes..........unfortunately for my beloved Giants fans all around. Barry is fastly becoming one of my FAVE players...always delivers (except for playoffs) and he's just the man around here. But without him--what are we gonna do? I know that lately he has been a lil "rude" to the media--but hey, he's the only chance we can at ever winning a World Series, unless we get somebody like Griffey (not happening, I don't think!) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif.
Oh sorry about the botched J.T. call of mine--I was watching the game that night, and they showed the shots of it being fair (from the camera angel). but i watched the news after that, and they showed more accurate shots of it being foul. But I still love my J.T. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. He is RELALY struggling thoug--its sad, the best defensive 1st basemen in all of baseball has to sit down and not play every few games b/c right now he cannot hit http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. He has always been a slow starter--but it's killing us now since the rest of the team is also struggling too.
The NL West is so competitive these days--it's starting to frustrate me! LA, SD, and AZ are in a 3 way tie for 1st right now--and of course the standings change about every day!!! SF is only 1 game out--yet we are in 4th (since they are all tied). CRAZINESS eh?
The Giants somehow need to get rollin. We need to get something shaked up round here! We started to win some games, but we lost tonight...basically, we kinda suck right now... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif not that bad, since we're above .500, but we are just not that team that we used to be.
Rob, I really wish I was in Boston http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I really think that NOmar is really cute--*sigh*, baseball players in general are cute (well some of them at least) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. I hope to get married to a pro baseball player http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif haha.
Are your Sox in 2nd place or 1st? Also intersting..today the Twins for the first time this season are in 2nd...amazing ain't it?
DGPhoney--YAY!!!!!! Derek better be single http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
He and Nomar make a pretty studly pair of shortstops http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif.
SSS1365--you know what, your Mets are really starting to put on a good streak lately it seems...they have been winning quite a few lately! Also the Braves, too, it seems?

Oh, BTW, can you believe that SD is in first place? (Not meant to sound mean—it’s just that they were supposed to be in last—but then again, even the last place in the NL west is still prolly more competitive than those in 3rd place in other divisions.)
Also--Rob, here's a tidbit of trivia for ya--Bonds is the fastest player EVER in baseball to reach 24 (or was it 23?) HRs so quickly in a season..he is on pace for about 84 or something http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. He has 25 right now! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Gosh--he just BETTER remain a Giant!! I want him to enter the Hall of Fame as a Giant! He said he'll go into the Hall of Fame as whatever team he played with last. He supposedly really wants to stay here in SF--but he also has one of the most demanding sports agents, too--Scott Boris.

yeah - sox are in 2nd by half a game, but they play the yankees for two at fenway starting tonite - i really want to be back in boston, dammit. Anyway -
you're absolutely right about the padres - they were supposed to really, really suck this year, they trimmed payroll and didn't really have a great team last year, and had very little offense (they play in the best pitcher's park in the league, prob). But they signed a bunch of guys really cheap (rickey henderson, bubba trammel, traded for mark kotsay, signed bobby jones, playing ben davis finally . . .), so they're WAY better than expected. Good division - the giants just need people to start hitting, they're in the same boat as the rockies (and even the dodgers): bunch of guys underachieving.
I don't think they'll trade bonds, unless they're waaaaaay out of the wildcard/first. but we'll see - i'll drop more on this one later, i think it's really interesting how it'll work out but i've got a tee time in 20 so i'm out. later -

The Cardinals are still hanging in there--they had a BIG 10 game winning streak a couple of weeks ago, and since then have gone a little cold. But it seems like now they are back to their winning ways. And more good news...today's game against Milwaukee marked the return of a certain big redheaded first baseman. And Mac didn't disappoint either, going deep to left field for his first home run in about 6 weeks. Can you imagine being a pitcher and facing a team that had Jim Edmonds, Mark McGwire, Albert Pujols, and J.D. Drew as the heart of its batting order? Awesome. Speaking of Pujols, is this kid phenomenal or what?
By the way, I have to turn my attention to a would-be phenomenal youngster...Rick Ankiel. He's at AAA Memphis now, and still experiencing the same problems that he had in the majors. In his last game, he pitched 2/3 of an inning with 6 walks and 5 wild pitches. I kind of chuckled at this when it first started happening, thinking it was something that he just had to get over. Now it's starting to get scary.
It's clear that Ankiel's problem didn't have to do with facing major league competition, because he's now doing it in the minors. It could be a deeper psychological problem. Ankiel has gotten an incredible amount of hype from the media over the past two years, especially the St. Louis media. Maybe he wouldn't have been the superstar that they made him out to be, but he could at least be a solid pitcher. Sadly, if these problems keep up, we may never find out.

You guys rock!
Rob--tell me how the Sox are doing (after thie game)...I wanna know who wins! I know that the Yankees-Sox rivalry is probably 10 times greater than that of the G-men-Dodgers rivalry (amazing!).
I'm so amazed at how much you know about baseball! What do you do...do you watch Sportscenter/read the paper/listen to talkshows...what do you do? It's like you know every single player's stats or something on every team http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif.
Dang, will teh NL WEst EVER BE STABLE for crying out loud???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's getting annoying to tell you the truth! I'm a person who hates so much change (it says so in personatliy tests, LOL http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif)...all I want is the G-men to be in 1st all the way through, is that too much to ask http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif?
SD amazes me. For some reason--I have gone to the most Padres games more than any other opposition vs. the Giants... and how they can be better tha the Giants surprises me (not to be meant condescending, just thought my G-men would do better http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif.)
Yeah, the Giants are totally underachieving this year. All we can do is hit HRS--that is how pathetic we are at times! Once we left like 14 runners on in one day...yesterday, we had so many bases-loaded opps (or was it the day b4 yesterday) yet no one scored. Pathetic! Did you see highlights of the Giants-AZ game yesterday?? What a heartbreaker http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. First off...what an excelletn pitching effort by Mark Gardner, going up against big Randy Johnson himself! Gardy has twice gone up against the big unit, and twice he has either won against R.J. or has tied him. So it is 0-0 in the 9th! And then in the top of the 10th, an AZ gets a run, and then in the bottom of the 10th, talk about dramatics--Felipe Crespo, out for a month, comes up as a pinch hitter, hits a MAGNICIFICENT, booming HR into McCovey Cove! (ONly player besides Bonds in a Giant uni to go deep into the water). So it's tied--and wouldn't you know it...AZ comes back with another run...SF comes up, Bonds ALMOST hits his 521st HR...short by like 3 feet! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif And then other players almost got HRs too. So we end up losing. Even worse is that Robb Nenn, our used-to-be great closer, can not seem to save games/ties for us lately!
I really hope that we can sign Bonds--without him, basically we are meat! I would hate to see him in a nother uniform http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif it's not the same, you know? espcially since he was born and raised here in the Bay area too...and willie mays is his godfather...
chief, it's really sad about poor Rick Ankiel http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. He was really good, until the playoffs hit him last year. It is really sad how the media can mess up perfect talents.

Sox lost, down by 1 1/2 games to the yankees - red sox/yankees again tonight on espn at 7e, pedro pitches against mussina, should be a good game
As far as keeping up w/ stats and stuff, I usually catch baseball tonight or sportscenter either at night or when i get up (not much else on at noon), plus espn.com is my addiction. I don't have a job yet so pretty much all i do is play golf, go out, and watch baseball - I start at the lab next monday though, so that should bite into golf and baseball time . . . not going out of course, but definitely the other two, so the stats drop-ins will drop off significantly!

Sox lost tonite, but they're still up by one game on the f-ing yankees - good stuff! they swept the bluejays last week, and manny ramirez hit the longest home run in the history of the skydome (over 490 feet - it was huge; 5th deck, they don't even sit people up there any more!).

Hey, we are 6 games out today! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif B/c last night shawn estes pitched an awesome game--he is my fave pitcher http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 20 innings! And barry hit his 30th! But a lot of ppl in the Bay ARea are already worrying, like me, about the possiblity of Barry returning--b/c Jerry Rice became a Raider today officially http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. I'm not a big Niners fan--but I do root for them sorta..since I'm a SF girl http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. So I'm very disappointed that Jerry had to go to the Raiders!!!!! Hey, didn't the Sox play the Yanks yesterday or a few days ago? How is the series going? What's Boston's record...and Seattle is so very amazing...I think I'm going to go buy tickets soon to see them play the Giants in Interleague!
Oh, BTW, I was watching the Sports recaps yetserday, and it was amazing to see that Pedro has a record like 2-5 (??--don't quote me on that, I was watching it late at night!) yet has like a 2.59 or something like ERA? This was from www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Fountain/8998/Dolls/ (http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Fountain/8998/Dolls/)
I explained how to do this in the "College World Series" thread Enjoy!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

alright, that sucked. As you can see DGPhoney, it didn't show up. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif
anyway, i guess i'll have to show u the long way (i was hoping it wuold show up as a single image, like the smileys do). go here: http://mermaiden.virtualave.net/Dolls/index.html
And then keep on scrolling down until you see a full row of dolls. The second full roow of dolls, you'll see dolls that all have dark skin. Stop there at the second row, and scroll RIGHT. You'll see a girl wearing a Yankee tank! I just thought that would be cute to show you http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. Sorry I couldn't post the image for some reason! It worked on the College World Series thread though (but on that i used a different website).

Hey Rob,
Aww, I'm sorry. That really sucks. Injuries are plaguing the giants too...j.t. snow (arghh! my fave player next to shawn estes), joe nathan, eric davis, john johnstone, and some others (cannot remember).
Strep throat--yuck. At least that only lasts 2 weeks I think? I had strep throat a while back... haha, yeah you guys should get real well against the marlins...i think the giants played against them 6 times? we've won 5 outta 6 i think http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. great team to get well against!!
Did you see highlights of the giants/A's games? we look despicable http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif argh. oh well...i officially don't think we will make it this year! Hey at least you guys are like 10 games (?) above .500 or something like that!
About Livan...he has sooo many losses this year, I dont' know what's up with him?! I really hope we do SOMETHING this trading deadline...we need somebody new! Maybe the Sox will get somebody(s) too, if Nomar is gonna be out this whole season??
P.S. my IM is cs40401 (the 0's are zeros) IM me anytime!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hey ExGreek! Hopefully this post goes thru b/c GC is having problems ughh. anyway, your white sox totally surprised me last year...it's great for baseball, IMO, though, when underdogs make it http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif! Like Minnesota this year, and the Cubbies.
What place are your ChiSox in this year??? Are you guys doing OK going thru the All-Star Break? Hey Ex greek! Well, my Giants are in third too http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. Maybe you guys will totally surge during the second half and knock down the Twins or something http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif! Or you could look at the wild card. The Giants are 5.5 games back from first place Arizona http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. I hate Arizona as well as, of course, the 2nd place Dodgers, yuck! The Giants are SO sub-par this year, it's making me mad! All this talent we have, and we're just totally under-achieving.
Ya know, about Livan Hernandez and Shawn Estes. Livan had a HORRIBLE stretch of like 10 games where he just, plainly speaking, sucked. He is doing a lot better recently, that we Giants fans think he's finally getting his stuff back! I think the last 4 games he has been stellar. On Sunday, he only gave up 3 R, had 11Ks, but didn't get a decision http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif.
Shawn Estes - well, he has had mostly a wonderful first half, with the exception of 2 dodger games (ughhhhh) and the most recent game - Saturday against Milwaukee. I think he is the only pitcher of the Giants (and maybe the MLB) who had never lost at home before! but unfortunately fate reversed itself and he lost Saturday. HIs past 3 starts haven't been so good!
Unfortunately, I don't know if you know or not - but Estes is a VERY emotional player, who really berates himself if he doesn't do well http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. So a lot of people say that his recent loss against Milwaukee won't be good for him, since he has to sit on it all throughout the All-Star Break till his next start! Hopefully he will put it behind him and do well in the second half, like he has mostly done so throughout the first half!!
Hopefully all the NL West teams but the Giants will suck in the 2nd half http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. I really hate Arizona and the Dodgers!!!

Hey all you wonderful baseball fans http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif!
OK so I was watching Politically Incorect yesterday, and the whole show was mainly about baseball! Mark Langston, former MLB player, was one of the guests. They were debating about players' salaries, their agents, and teams like Tampa Bay, Kansas City, etc.
Anyway, I wanted to get your opinions on these issues! WHat do you think about the enormous salaries that players get these days? Do you get annoyed at their agents, or do you think players have their say? Do you think teams like Tampa Bay, Kansas city (which do not draw well), should be abolished????
What I think:
1) About the salaries - it frickin gets on my nerves! Especially ARod's tremendous salary. It's the reason why tickets are jacked up so high, and the reason why only some games are televised non-cable. Also it will be the reason if Barry Bonds doesn't remain a Giant next year http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. I can't STAND the thought of him being not a Giant - he grew up a Giant and BETTER remain a Giant http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif .
On the other hand, one guest argued that they should get those high salaries b/c they only play in the majors for a few years. What do y'all think?
2) About their agents - Although I know it's not always the agents' faults, I feel that they are the main reason for the jacked-up salaries, ESPECIALLY the agent Scott Boris, who demands so mcuh. They try to convince their clients that they should hold out and sign only if they are paid XXX amount of money.
3) About teams like Tampa Bay - though I agree that they are not THAT great for the game of baseball (they are faltering in $$$, and barely anybody goes to watch), I am scared if they are all abolished, and only the teams like the Yankees, the Dodgers remain. Like only the teams who have like a 100 Million payroll can compete. I think that's horrible for the game of baseball.
OK, hopefully you guys can tell me your take on these isseus http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif.

Agents and salaries go hand in hand. I don't like either situation. I feel a salary cap should be used in the mlb. There should not be a 70 or a million dollar gap in salary between the top and bottom spending teams. No matter how good the twins are, they will not compete with the yankees or cleveland in the playoffs.
As for teams like tampa bay, I do think two teams should be eliminated. Those two are tampa and montreal. No offense to any fans of these two team, but they are atrocious franchises. Eliminateing two teams along with installing a salary cap will strengthen baseball. Think of eliminating two teams as eliminating the bottom 50 players in the league. Some players such as williw bliar shouldn't be in the league but are because of the number of roster spots in the league right now.

FREE AGENCY/SALARIES:
OK, well, this is an unpopular sentiment, but the salary scale isn't all that outrageous. Also - it's tough to blame ticket prices on the players; the owners give them the money, the players just sign a name on the bottom. For every ARod, Manny, or Hampton there's a Griffey or Larkin who took below-level pay to remain with an organization - why? B/c the Reds asked. If someone offered me 1/4 of 1 billion dollars to play baseball, of course I'd say yes (and I would wake up fifteen minutes later, but hey). Not all players are greedy - like Sean Casey said on the Rome show the other day, "Selfish players aren't the norm - they're just louder, so you think they are." What do you think Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones play for? No one knows - they don't publicize those kind of contracts. How about Vlad Guerrero? He's signed long-term, way below market value, in Montreal of all places . . . and he's not demanding a trade. So yeah - the salaries are hellish, but it's just like other sports . . . see the new contracts of Corey Dillon, Joe Sakic, Patty Roy, Tracy McGrady, etc . . .
AGENTS:
Yeah, I'm not a big Scott Boras fan - bottom line though? It's his job to do what his clients ask. Sure, he got big deals for ARod and a bunch of other guys (see his client Mark Prior not being drafted by the Twins for an example), but the player can always say 'no', and he has to sign the contract. Unfortunately, necessary evil.
CONTRACTION OF MLB:
Yeah, probably two teams need to go. Which ones though? The Expos and DRays? I don't think these are implicitly the two. Think about it - both of these are bad organizations? No way! The Expos have proven time and again to be an amazing organization when it comes to player development and drafting, and even trading. They get screwed simply b/c Montreal is a bad baseball town. Think back to all the sick, sick players the expos have had, and IMAGINE the '94 Expos team if they'd been able to stay together (yes, they were in first before the strike - on pace to break the league record for wins, if i remember correctly) . . . Let's think: Larry Walker w/ Vlad guerrero and jose vidro, pedro would still be pitching there, they wouldn't have had to trade for Hideki Irabu to force out prospects who didn't want to be there . . . there are tons of great players that went through that organization. Similar w/ TB - they might have the best farm system in baseball, it's loaded with potential major-leaguers. The second biggest contraction question is what to do with the players, and both of these teams have quite a few good ones (although the D-rays' aren't in the majors quite yet). Better to move the expos to N. VA, and maybe you can ditch TB to strengthen the marlins, but maybe not. KC is safe; it's been a mecca for baseball since the old negro leagues, there's no way they could get rid of the royals.
So who to ditch? I'd say either drop both FLA teams (but, again, who gets AJ Burnett? Who gets Josh Hamilton? Clifford Floyd? tough) . . . or drop Oakland (bad attendance, direct competition with the Giants) if you can't move them to San Jose.
If movements/changes could be made, the best solution might be to kill off the Rays, move the marlins to the orlando area, move the expos to Northern Virginia (seriously, do you think the orioles will have trouble filling camden yards? No way) . . . Then, if you can move the A's to San Jose, get rid of the Diamondbacks. They're a franchise in a lot of trouble financially, in a not-so-hot baseball area, and with very little farm system to work with - the high-priced veterans will be free agents soon anyway, and they won't contract for a couple years at the earliest, so that'll make it easier to drop them. Otherwise, the A's (while a great organization, with a deep farm and good front office staff) just can't do it in that market, with that relic of a field . . .
It's tough any way you look at it, though. The Twins would also be serious candidates to be disbanded, as well - regardless of them being in first place, the owner's a douche bag and won't spend money to keep them competitive (some amazing trades have given them most of the pitching staff they have, which is the key), the public won't support a new stadium with tax dollars, and doesn't support the team like they used to. I can't imagine the Twins being gone - they're the legacy of the Washington Senators, an original 1901 team (same with the A's), I've watched them since Kirby Puckett, and (other than fenway) the Metrodome is the stadium i've seen the most games in . . . it would be a shame. But so many teams have backed themselves into a corner . . .
Ok - now i'm rambling; bottom line - contraction probably won't happen any time soon (unfortunately), and it depends on so many factors (which teams will move, if the giants and orioles will consent to team moves, which teams stay in debt, etc.) that it's more of a puzzle than a picture. So there ya go - it needs to happen, but it'll be a heated debate. Loria in Montreal doesn't want to be bought out, but the Twins' owner might. TB wants to stay around, but the owner is half-assed. it's 6 of one, half-dozen of the other in every scenario.

ahh! i think the giants are cursed! we were playing the mariners, and we were leading 3-2 in the ninth with two outs. Nen gave up a HR, we go to extra innings, and in the 11th inning, the Mariners get 2 men on base with NO hits to the outfield!!!! yeah dude - you're exactly right; Montreal, while incredible for its bars and strip clubs, just sucks as a baseball town. Move 'em to VA! At least, that's what seems like the best solution to me - but i mean someone's got to go, so maybe them. We'll see I guess - i think contraction will be a huge sticking point in the offseason's labor talks . . . should get ugly.

Can I ask, let's say that Oakland does move to SJ - do the Giants get to say "yesyou may" or "no"??? I would hate it if the A's moved to San Jose - that's where many Giants fans are! PLus it's where all the Silicon valley ppl are.

Right now, the Giants are saying no - but . . . do you really think that PacBell isn't going to be filled? I don't buy that - I think that moving the A's there would probably work fine for both. Just like the Orioles trivial claim to "territorial rights" to northern VA - if you're a Giants fan in San Jose, how does that change w/ the A's moving there? It's probably not a viable franchise in Oakland, and it's a 100-yr-old franchise . . . so why would the Giants block it? Maybe it's just me . . . but it seems like a million-dollar pissing contest.

The Orioles' "territorial rights" to NoVA, in my opinion, is a ridiculous excuse. Hello! Baltimore is in MARYLAND, not VIRGINIA. And try getting to Camden Yards from northern VA during rush hour traffic... it's not exactly a short drive. Besides, I don't think putting a team so close to B-more is gonna take away Orioles fans. For example, I am a Mets fan, and I live about 8 hours away from NY. You could put a stadium down the street from my house, and the Mets would still be number one to me.
Okay, I'm done now. You can tell I'm all for bringing a team to my state! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Rob, as much as I hate to admit this, a good percentage of ppl who attend Pac Bell Park games are yuppies from Silicon Valley! Most of them don't care at all about the Giants...rather, they look at Pac Bell park as "the place to be in SF" - which Pac Bell was, for a long time...maybe it still is (?). Anyway, it's pretty funny...one day there was a total sports show dedicated to how so many Giants "fans" are really from Silicon Valley, yapping on their cell phones, trying to "impress"...I really don't think there are THAT many yuppies...but who knows?
For example, one person said that there was this guy who looked like a total Bill Gates (haha) who started cheering when supposedly "Bonds" went to the plate...he was like "C'mon Barry, hit a HR!" haha. Actually it was this guy Calvin Murray who was batting...funny thing is, is that Calvin is relatively small compared to Barry, and also Calvin bats right-handed... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif.
Anyway, even though I don't like seeing yuppies at the park...they ARE, I guess, a rather important part of revenue. There are also a lot of casual Giant fans from SJ, and maybe, just maybe, if Oakland moved there, and was a good team (as they are in Oak-town), those casual fans would be converted. Who knows...
About Anaheim...wow...that would certainly be a cause of controversy, I think. I would hate to see NY/LA/some other big-money team get all those great free agents! Yet another dynasty created http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif ...How well do the Angels draw BTW?

I don't think the Angels draw too badly - I mean, they're considered 'mid-market' but I thik more likely it's just that Disney wants to dump sports teams (not too hot for the bottom line).

Here's another interesting plan I just read Peter Gammons writing about:
Disney wants to sell/drop the Angels - so MLB could just buy out Disney, move the A's to Anaheim/LA, and be out of one jam. The other team dropped would be the Expos, with the Marlins moving to Northern VA/DC and the DRays going to Orlando (Also, Jeffrey Loria, Expos owner, would be bought out w/ regards to the Expos, and allowed to buy the Devil Rays). Interesting plan, to say the least . . .
He also spoke a bit about what to do with the players - It appears the major-league players would get a choice of free agency or a draft at their current salaries (guaranteed, in case they're not picked up), while the minor-leaguers would all be free agents. The obvious problem with this is that Troy Glaus, Darin Erstad, Vlad Guerrero, Jose Vidro, etc. all become free agents . . . and all the sudden it's the best free-agent class in history. Think the Yankees wouldn't love to replace Paul O'Neill and Scott Brosius with Troy Glaus and Vladimir Guerrero? Think Steinbrenner wouldn't spend the money? Craziness . . . on the bright side, maybe the Sox can outspend everyone except the Yanks, and pick up Vidro or someone . . . anyway, either way it probably won't even be seriously discussed for another year (at least). It's interesting though.

Anaheim draws pretty good. However they do play in a 34,000 seat stadium so anything looks good in that stadium.

34,000?!!! WOW. I thought Pac Bell was small with 41,000 + ! The 'Stick used to hold a lot, either 63,000 or 65,000 - something like that, but then again, they were a football stadium. The Giants also only drew like 11,000 on a Thursday night at the 'Stick http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif .

I just ran a full season through Triple Play 2002 for the playstation, on simulation mode . . . the results:
AL Division champs - NYY, Whitesox, Anaheim
NL - Marlins, Astros, Rockies
Wildcards - Red Sox, Diamondbacks
MVPs - Jeff Bagwell, Manny Ramirez (finished .20 points in BA from the triple crown)
Cy Young - Clemens, Smoltz
World Series - Astros over Yankees in six, MVP was Billy Spiers
So yeah - that's how the video game says it'll go down . . . hahaha, interesting i guess. Of course, it also named Sidney Ponson the starter for the AL in the all-star game . . . ; )

Hi newbie http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Municipal stadium in cleveland held 73,000 before the indians moved into the new stadium. That place would only get 10,000 a game, lol. A lot of stadiums seem to be getting smaller when they are built. Now, having a stadium over 50,000 is very rare. Detroit went from having a 55,000 stadium to a 40,000 stadium. I guess with all of the luxury boxes and stuff, seat numbers don't matter.
BTW, I hope Bonds back is okay, he hit 2 hrs than left the game

Hey ExGreek http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif! Wow, I thought that 50,000-capacity-stadiums were the norm! Well, I do really like Pac Bell much better compared to Candlestick (I refuse to call it 3-Com http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif lol). It's just more cozier-feeling, plus it's so awesome how almost anywhere you sit, you can totally see the game!!! It doesn't hurt that Pac Bell has all those cool things, like that fiberglass mitt and the Coca-cola bottle!
Ack...I REALLY hope that Bonds is OK. It was awesome to see him hit those 2 hrs the other day - and it was nice to see him answer the curtain call http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif! He was walked like 2 or 3 times yesterday...but went 0 for 2 I think. He is quickly becoming my favorite player - you know what, I actually had a dream this morning that I met him and was playing in a baseball game with him! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Weird! In my dream, I asked him if I could trade places with him...I was playing 3rd base in my dream, but sucked, lol, so I asked him if he could play 3rd base, and I would play LF instead hahaha http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif! He said "sure" and signed an autograph for me! LOL...
And I really hope that Bonds breaks Big Mac's record http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif!!!!! You know what's funny tho - Bonds is so famous, but he doesn't have a nickname like all the others (i.e., Big Mac, Slammin' Sammy, etc.). In the SF Chronicle (newspaper), fans were debating between Barry Bombs, Barry Da Bomb Bonds, etc. hahaha. I like the nick Barry Bombs.

I have a question! As you prob know, the A's made a 3-way trade with Colorado and KC to obtain Jermaine Dye. What I don't understand is how 3-way trades work...why not just do a 2-team trade?? I'm confused http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif

Newbie, the way I can explain it is each of the three teams have a need that maybe a trade with a single team wouldn't have. The a's don't have an extra shortstop but the rockies did. Each team can fill their needs to even out the trade with each other. Another factor in these trades might be money. Dye costs too much for what the royals wanted him to make. If I am correct, I think Dye is a FA after this or next season. The royals might have wanted to dump his salary and fill a need. The rockies have been shoping perez but couldn't get enough in a trade alone with the royals.
Thats how I think it is in the MLB. In the NBA, a third team gets involved for salary cap reasons. Since there is a cap, they need a third team to unload some of their higher priced players on to squeeze under the cap.
Hope this helps http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Technically (if you look at the MLB releases or whatever), it's actually two 2-team trades - perez to KC and Dye to CO, then Dye to the A's and 3 minor-leaguers (including jose ortiz - untouchable earlier in the year . . . hmm) to the rockies.
Basically - the point is that the deal couldn't happen straight-up, like Ex Greek said (good explaination), and oftentimes you'll need the 3rd (or 4th) team to come in and pick up some slack, b/c each team has something another wants, but they don't match up.
Interesting trade though - that could definitely spark more trades, hopefully including Phil Nevins and Sterling Hitchcock to the Sox . . . or just get some guys off the freaking DL, for real.
newbie - what did you think of the Andres Galarraga trade? I thought that to be a weird move by the Giants . . .

Thanks guys for the explanations! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Don't you think that KC is the "loser" of this trade then? I mean, Perez isn't that great.... oh well, it's true tho, Dye's salary was huge, and he will be a FA after this or next season (forgot). I think that was an excellent trade by the A's. I think they're gonna be a major part in the hunt for the wild card, especially now that Dye's on board!
Rob, about Andres Galarraga, at first, I was like, "What the heck are the Giants doing picking up a 40-yr-old who is slumping?" but then on the other hand, he has really produced for us as a Giant in the last two games. Also, I think Giants management picked the Big Cat up not only for offense (which we were in dire need for when we acquired him), but also b/c it seems that the Giants always like players who are classy guys on the field and off http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. And Andres is that kinda guy that the Giants org. is known for. Also, he is a Latin player, and the GIants have many, many Latin players, so management said that he would be good to mentor the younger players, esp. the Latin-speaking players. I am hoping that this trade will be one of those "brilliant" moves by Sabean - one move that Giants fans can look back on and think, "What a great move!" (Like the matt williams trade.)
Anyhow, we're 2-0 with Galarraga, and we've pounded the opposing teams both times, so, so far, I think the trade has worked out!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
I'm glad tho, that the Giants management is doing SOMETHING to help us win (a lot of us Giants fans felt like the management only cared about the payroll (the small payroll, might I add), and didn't care to produce a winning team on the field NOW). I really hope that we can get a pitcher tho! Ehh, 4 days till the trading deadline...
ExGreek, Livan Hernandez pitched yet another spectacular game last night!!! He is definitely back http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif!

My guess, given Dan Duquette's propensity for ditching young pitching talent? (see: trade to SD last season, et al) Yes - Ohka's gone, he has the higher upside supposedly but threw poorly last time out, and the sox honestly have a ton of guys that fit in the 4,5-spots in the rotation - they need a number 2/3 to go along w/ pedro and nomo (who's broken out, again, this year - great signing in my opinion, but prob. still a number three - classic strikeout pitcher, but only 2 good pitches), plus a 3B or 1B with some pop (PHIL NEVIN).
They should definitely trade one of them; Crawford's probably the better of the two right now, but Ohka could definitely be better long-term. I say - trade Ohka and Dernell Stenson, along w/ a Troy O'Leary-type, and try to fill both positions needed, or at least get one impact player for the stretch run, and then when Nomar and Varitek are healthy hopefully you're right there, and they put you over the top.
Here's the more radical solution (we'll call it the "video-game GM", as it's quite impossible): Trade Carl Everett, move Trot Nixon permanently to CF. Hopefully, this nets an Al Leiter-type in return. Then you can move the prospects for a Nevin (or someone like him), and suddenly the lineup's just as imposing, but with much-improved pitching (move arrojo and crawford to bullpen, and that gets stronger as well) - without pedro, the bullpen's over-worked, and one pitcher could make a lot of difference. With Nomar, Nixon, Manny, Nevins, and Bichette at the 2-6 spots, that hides a lot of the holes in the team - plus, last year's Yankees and Mets both proved you can get a long way w/out a leadoff hitter, which the Red Sox have missed for years.
Ex greek - which teams do you follow?
Also - what moves do you look for this coming week? I'll drop a list of ones that make sense to me later - but i'm at work, so peace out for now.

The McGriff trade finally went through today. That should give the cubs a legitamate #4 hitter. I still don't see them getting in the playoffs though. I do think Astacio will get traded but I have no idea to who. The mets might trade reed or rusch away possibly to toronto. Toronto is looking at reducing payroll and might trade S. stewart since he will be a fa. Honestly though, I don't see too many more trades going down besides astacio. Not any quality guys on the market who haven't already been traded ie: Baldwin and Dye. What is your opinion on this years trading deadline?

I'm sure he's pretty hot, newbie - but Schmidt is a huge upgrade over Vogelsong, as well as Vander Wal over Rios. Only problem - neither player is a hellish addition.
I think when you add it all up, though, this trade and the one for Galaraga make the Giants a much better team. If Schmidt pitches like he can, that's pretty much what the Giants needed - a consistant innings-eater who doesn't give up a lot of big innings, and Vander Wal gives some actual pop in the RF position.
(I love the trade deadline! hahaha)

I agree Rob, I think this trade makes us a much stronger team - probably at least about 3X stronger. I am just so sad that Vogelsong, esp., is gone http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. I never got the chance to meet him! (I had promised myself that I would meet him somehow...my father knows the GM of the Giants, so I've gotten to meet some players http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif.) Oh well, I guess I will have to root for a Pittsburgh player (when he's not playing the Giants)...
Actually, I don't know how good this trade will be after this year. I think Schmidt might sign with the GIants after this year...he has already expressed interest in signing with the Giants after this year (he is a f.a. afte rthis year), but when you think about it, in about 3 years, Rios + Vogelsong will prolly have much better numbers than Schmidt plus the aging Vander Wal. What do you think? Oh well, at least Schmidt plus Vander Wal will give us much more experience for this season, at least. And hopefully good numbers!
I'm sorry that your Red Sox didn't do anything this trading deadline (well, it's 12:50 PST, and nothing has yet been announced...) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. But, I think that Boston is doing really good for all that you guys have had to put up with this year. Especially with Nomar back, and then Saberhagen...I think you guys really didn't have to make a trade anyway, though trades are usually nice. At least there is still a chance of waiver deals though, although those are somewhat tricky!

At least there is still a chance of waiver deals though, although those are somewhat tricky!

hmm . . . Well, don't know how to say this buddy . . . you're not exactly right? ; ) haha - The Sox did indead make a move (not the one i wanted, but it's ok) - trading tomo ohka (ex greek? did i call that one?) and another minor leaguer to the expos for Ugueth Urbina - so i guess that's decent, assuming he's not that hurt. Good move, i guess, assuming health . . .
Now - the long-term impact of the giants' trades? Well - Vogelsong isn't considered a 'top prospect' any more, and really hasn't been playing that well; Rios is a light-hitting RFer, which isn't exactly a hot commodity. That said - there's definitely a chance for this to bite them in the ass, if either develops, but that's the chance you take (see: Red Sox trading jeff bagwell for a middle reliever, et al). At least they didn't do what the twins did, and trade freakin' Matt Lawton.
Anyway - even if Schmidt leaves, Vander Wal is signed for another year or so, so he fills a hole (sort of), and while big cat won't be around long, it's a carpe diem move, which is probably solid. Plus, I don't think they really 'sold the farm' so to speak - they definitely have better prospects/young players. I heard they could have made some sick deals had they traded felix rodriguez - good decision to keep him, he's going to be crazy good.

Hi newbie and ksigrc. Well the trading dealine has came and went with decent trades at the end but nothing earth shattering. The yankees getting Hitchcock wasn't very huge. He will be a 5th starter though I wonder if El Duque will be back soon. The Red sox getting urbina is bigger than one might think. Having two relievers like that in a bullpen will be huge come playoff time. When is Pedro coming back?
As for the giants, they filled some weaknesses but didn't do anything earthshattering. I do think they will pass LA/Arizona and make it into the playoffs as the champions of the West.
The trade I was most puzzeled with was the trade involving the twins and mets. Why did the twins trade away Matt Lawton? Hitting has been their weakness this year so why not trade away one of your best hitters? Rick Reed is consistent and has expierience but they still have no chance of going all the way this year. This trade will bite them in the rear for sure. Oh, and how about the brilliant move of trading Mark Redman for Todd Jones? Jones was worthless in Detroit and I feel the tigers got an absolute steal once Redman gets healthy.
Ksig, you did call Ohka being moved. Now that Nomar is back, they will make it in as a tough wild card team. I think the twins will fade out of the playoff race by late semester, maybe hanging around until the last weekend but thats it.

As a Mets fan, I am not upset with this trade. Sad to see Rick Reed go, but the Mets need some hitters!

I agreed with you at first - but, Reed was the best pitcher on the market (FAR better than Astacio), and all they got for him was Matt Lawton? Jeezus - W/out Piazza, the Mets would hit like 90 home runs a season. They need power - they could have acquired any number of stronger-hitting right fielders, and while Lawton's .400 OBP is nice, who's going to drive him in?
The Mets did do a great job of clearing payroll, and Bruce Chen will be a good pitcher someday, so I think this offseason will be good for them - too bad they couldn't hook up the deal w/ the Blue Jays: Shannon Stewart, Kelvim Escobar and Alex Gonzalez for Reed, Ordonez, and Ventura - that would have been an AMAZING deal for the Mets.

OK - my deadline roundup:
-I'm happy w/ how the Sox ended up - they have a propensity for waiver-wire moves, and it's way easier to get a hitter through than pitcher, so i don't think they're quite done - but Urbina is a good addition, at a relatively low cost. Plus, guys get healthy, and the wildcard could be happenin' - Pedro and Vtek are back by sep 1, and Castillo is back this week. How's that bullpen look w/ Arrojo back in there now, urbina, lowe, garces, beck, and wakefield once pedro returns? They really could have used a 2B who can lead off, but they'll have to wait for ray durham to be a free agent it looks like, huh exgreek? . . . ; )
-Ex Greek - your Tigers won huge. Jones said he'd come back in 2002 anyway (if they want him), and i can't possibly understand why the Twins would trade Redman. They might get Jones back next year, and end up getting redman for nothing - plus, young pitching is the way to go in Comerica, looks like they've finally learned from the M's and are doing it that way. Lima-time is back, too - he's on fire.
-Giants - i like their deals more and more, as i think about it. They stole vanderwal and schmidt . . .
-But they might not have enough to beat the Astros. Damn - w/ that bullpen of dotel, wagner, williams, et al - they'll be tough in Enron. No one can put up an outfield comparable to Hidalgo, Alou, and Berkman, plus with Bagwell and Biggio - tough. In Enron, come playoff time, who's going to win those 9-7 games? Sorry Cubs/Giants/DBacks/Braves fans . . .
-I hate the Yankees - Hitchcock's now the best 5th starter in the league when el Duque is back, but it doesn't matter - they still have to find ways to score runs, and hopefully they stop doing that here soon. Nothing worse than the yankees on a hot streak.
-I don't get the royals - they basically sold the farm for nothing. What are they, a AAA affiliate of the atheletics? crap, least they could have done was cut out the rockies, and gotten ortiz and encarnacion in return. As it is now, Perez and Sadler are the middle-infield combo with the least pop that i can remember. They'd better steal around 100 bases, with a .995 fielding percentage.
Anyway - i'm out; my dreams of the Sox signing Magglio Ordonez in the offseason now dashed, we look to Giambi and Damon as our offseason saviors . . . and peace.

Hahahaa. Rob, around 12:50 PST yesterday, I had 2 windows open: mlb.com and espn.com. None of them had anything on the Red Sox then so I thought you guys didn't make any trades! But, I think it's awesome that you guys acquired Urbina. He throws some pretty nasty stuff! At least he's not in the NL anymore http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif! Did Urbina ever pass the physical? Isn't that the reason that the Yanks didn't get him before?
I guess I'm just sad that Vogelsong is gone http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. But he has a real upside, and I really won't be surprised if he's a starter next year. Rios on the other hand is known for his power...BUT the only thing is that he isn't consistent at the plate...with tons of strikeouts, which is his main problem.
Today Schmidt is starting for the Giants! Unfortunately i won't be able to watch or listen to the game, being in an entirely different town, but hopefully tomorrow when i check sfgiants.com there will be good news http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif.
We are either 5-0, or 6-0 (i forgot) with the Big Cat http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif! he is so awesome. he drove in 4 RBIS yesterday! Also, I think the Giants are finally starting to put it all together. Yesterday would have been a heartbreaker had we lost (after tieing the game up dramatically, and then going ahead...Rob Nenn allowed a 2-run HR in the ninth to tie it up yet again), but we came back and won in the 11th! Finally luck is on our side http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif!
Oh yeah - also yesterday, minutes before the trading deadline, the Giants acquired yet another person - Jason Christiansen from the Cards. What do you guys think of that move? He has pretty decent numbers I guess. I'm really glad that the management made 4 moves (trading deadline) for us!
Also, Rob, thank God that Felix Rodriguez wasn't traded. I think pretty soon he might be put in a dual-closer role with Rob Nenn.
ExGreek, did the ChiSox do anything, or no?
P.S. There is a huge rumor circulating around that the A's are headed for Las Vegas. There was a big headline in the Las Vegas newspaper today. However, the A's have a lease with their Oakland stadium which isn't up till 2004 or something like that. Supposedly a Las Vegas company has presented a great offer to the A's, and now, only MLB has to approve. Oakland city officials say that the team HAS been sold (to Mangalay or which ever that company is - it's a company from Los Angeles) for Las Vegas, but A's President and front office are vehemently denying it.
What do you guys think of that?

Newbie, I doubt that any major league franchise will be headed to Vegas. This is my opinion -- the big pro sports bosses are still afraid of the spectre of gambling.
KSigRC, I'm not a Royals fan, but I think that front office is a disgrace. You don't give away quality talent. Those poor folx will freak when they see Sweeney wearing some other team's gear after 2003.

Newbie, MLB would never approve it. Las Vegas has a terrible reputation because of gambling. That is why Vancouver grizzlies didn't move there in the NBA. Christianson isn't that big of a deal, but every little bit helps.
KSIGRC, I am a white sox fan, but follow the tigs since I am from MI. The twins were dumb for trading redman. I guess that ends the streak of bad trades by the tigs. Hey it looks like m's and yankees in the ALCS. Are the mariners like the 84 tigers and will just have one year where everything goes their way? We shall see. I have no idea who will win the NL. Whoever wins won't beat seattle or new york

I think there's only a few teams that have a possibility of doing it this year - just my opinions:
NL -
This is easier - Cubs have the pitching, braves have the experience. I don't think either goes anywhere important. The best team, WS-wise? I think the Diamondbacks - johnson and schilling will go like freakin Cy Young every other day if they need to. The only problem: they might not make the playoffs - the Giants and dodgers could easily keep them out. They're like the marlins from years back - built for the post-season, but they gotta get there first (first WC team to win WS). Guys like Greg Counsell and Steve Finley could come up huge in the postseason . . . only other serious contender against the AL? The Astros - the DH is a serious handicap for the NL, but Daryl Ward is a classic DH, and i think that offense can hit anybody.
AL-
NY's the team to beat, no doubt. Seattle can do it - but teams built on pitching need 3 good starters, and they only have garcia . . . but that bullpen is hellish. I say they get beat by the wildcard team (or the yankees if oak wins the WC). Boston could do it if they get healthy (PEDRO!), w/out him they're done. Even then, the Yankees own them in the ALCS, tough to beat. The A's are the dark horse - but prob too young, and the yankees switch hitters neutralize the solid lefties the A's rely on.
Personally, right now, i'd say Yankees over Astros in 5. Either way, no matter the outcome, i don't see the NL beating the AL.

Hey ExGreek,
Just want to warn you beforehand, this reply will get a bit emotional since I am a die-hard Giants and Bonds fan. :p
When he hit his 500th - YES, his teammates came out and bearhugged him. Rich Aurilia, Shawon Dunston, etc. etc., hell I think even Jeff Kent did. ALL his teammates were in total awe of his achievements and looked at him like he was on this pedestal, while congratulating him. I think when Barry hit his 500th, ppl finally began to realize that beneath his cool exterior, he really is a person with feelings, too. After he hit his 500th, he was just so emotional, so elated, so amazed, etc. He actually went to the mike, thanked his parents for having him, thanked the great fans of SF, said how happy he was to be playing for this great city.
And yesterday - yesterday was an INCREDIBLE win for the Giants. We were down 5-1. Twice, the Big Cat - Andres Galarraga - hit HRs to tie it up. So it's 5-5, who comes up and hits a pinch-hit HR for us? Of course it's Bonds. And you cannot believe the emotion that came out after he hit it. His teammates jumped up, incredibly ecstatic, someone even started hanging from a pole and swinging from it like on monkey bars...everyone came to hug him...all excited.
So Jeff Kent and him do not get along. That's OK...you can't expect everyone to get along on a team who has to interact with each other almost every day for so many months.
I am so sick of how ppl can't embrace Bonds, while they can embrace Sammy Sosa and Big Mac. Most ppl just say that he is a big fat asshole, all while never giving him a chance. Also, their impressions of Bonds being an ass usually comes from the media. I think I am just sick of the media in general who won't let ppl alone. When Bonds divorced his first wife, there was the media presenting all the messy details of the divorce to the public. I think there's a reason why Bonds doesn't like talking to the media - especially since it seems each time they talk to him they want to ask him controversial things.
OK I think I've gotten off subject now - the thing is - Barry loves San Francisco and most of San Francisco loves him...I won't ever forget the NL West Division-clinching game in '97 when Barry actually jumped into the stands and started hugging the fans. Suffice to say, I really want him to be back next year!
BTW, there's another Giants fan on GC - GiantsChic. :D
Sorry about my long emotional message!

Hey newbie. Thanks for the reply. Let me first off tell you that I like Bonds more than any other baseball player and have liked him since his pittsburg days.
I like his stance on the media, I think more players should follow suit. But I have heard differently on his views of the team, and how it is him above everyone else. I heard it straight out of Kent's mouth and why would he say this when his team is in the middle of a pennant race? These types of things don't happen often during a pennant race. Regardless, I think San Fran is a good fit for him but the yankees and other are waiting to shell out the big bucks. Whatever happens, I hope Bonds can keep putting up his individual stats like he has because he is one of the greatest ever.

Hey Exgreek - thanks for replying to my nostalgic message, lol. I was so stoked to see Bonds in the news today, replying very amicably to NY reporters, saying stuff like, "I love the city of San Francisco..the city is so forgiving, when you're going good they love you...when you're not, they are forgiving...I love this team and the chemistry we have..." and so on. Sorry, don't know if I got the correct wording, but that's the gist of what he said.
You know what? Sometimes I don't know why he still has that perception thrust upon him that he is a one-man player. You've heard what he's said about his HR chase. He doesn't even CARE about the HR chase - and I believe him. I really don't think Barry would lie - he's a frank type of guy. He only cares about getting the team to the World Series. And that's what I love about him.
About Kent...I know that about the Sports Illustrated article, he told reporters that the SI writer put his words out of context...so I don't know the true story behind that. What I do know is that on the field, Kent and Barry both care about getting the team a W. Off the field, I heard that they couldn't care less about each other. But...as long as their off-the-field relationship (or lack thereof) doesn't hurt the team, it doesn't matter IMO. Sure, I would love it if everyone got along - that makes the team a much stronger unit as a whole - but unfortunately, that's not reality.
I have to admit that Barry is more "self-absorbed" (well...that's not quite the word I'm looking for) than most other ball players (I emphasize MOST). He does have 3 lockers just for himself and a luxurious chaise-type chair...while others only have one locker, like last year's MVP Kent.
BUT...I completely appreciate those many efforts a few years back, when Bonds carried the whole team on his back. He didn't like doing it - of course, who would, when there's a 25-man team - but he did it anyhow.
I just wish the media would stop focusing so intently on his supposed-"selfishness" and instead realize how charitable he is, and how likeable he can be when they actually give him a chance!!!!
*finally stepping off my soapbox* ;) (for now anyways!)... I guess my Giants homer-ism is finally seeping through! lol

Yeah - in a move that was rumored for about forever, DLowe was moved into the starting rotation . . . they almost did it before this year, he apparently really wants to start, and front-office staff thinks he can.
I don't really understand; i mean, if you look at his save-situation marks, nearly all of his blown saves were ones in which he tried to go 1 2/3 innings or longer - doesn't exactly scream "solid endurance" to me. He pitched pretty well though, I guess - seems to me that we have a lot of guys who can throw 5 innings, though, and that's just hellish on the bullpen.
I guess it's a good move - season's over anyway, might as well hold open auditions for next year's club . . . how about matt anderson though? They said that last night he was throwing pure diesel to manny, we're talking 102, 103. Went right at him - manny hit what would have been a game-winning homer, just foul, in the bottom of the 9th and anderson came right back at him with another fastball, got him out to end the game. Balls - the kid's going to be good.
