Hey guys, my Fraternity is coming onto campus as a colony next semester and we're going to be a hearing and deaf chapter, we need a dynamite rush shirt that will catch everyones eyes and stay in the back of their minds.

How about a picture of the three monkeys (Hear,See,Speak no evil) and below them say "It just makes sense.....Rush Kappa Sig'

Would you please provide some details/clarification? Specially, what do you mean by "we're going to be a hearing and deaf chapter"? Also, are y'all colonizing at Gallaudet University? A colony of Kappa Sigma?

Well there guys that are joining that are hearing, and there are guys that are deaf. We actually have brothers that are here that are from RIT and gallaudet. Chris Peters, Philip Olivan, Jin Pae, Andrew Aguilara.

Not that it's my business, but I am curious as to the location of this chapter and how it can involve men from two different states.

California State University Northridge, the guys from RIT and Gaulludet had transfered to CSUN.

Okay makes sense -- thank you!

For anyone else who was confused, Cal State Northridge has a Deaf Studies program.

Thanks everyone for the clarification. I'm up to speed now.

KSigFounder - Have you asked any of your hearing impaired members for suggestions? And regardless of what y'all come up with, I would be sure to pass it by all members to be safe. It wouldn't be good PR to start a colony with controversy right off the bat.

for the record it's deaf, not hearing impaired, the deaf find that term offensive... hearing impaired inclines that their hearing could be fixed...

and yes i've talked to them, they're brainstorming, but i want to show them some examples of other rush shirts.

It could be a graphics issue, but what about having Kappa Sigma also spelled out with hands in Sign Language showing the letters that correspond to the English equivalents of Kappa Sigma? You could put your message ex: "Rush Kappa Sigma Colony 2008 CSUN" and have the corresponding message in sign language on the other side.

Even though I'm not your target audience, I am a HUGE FAN of when chapters use their own creativity and spirit to create promotional items instead of using a stock image or a graphic someone else designed. You have something unique, a deaf and hearing chapter, and definitely advertise that!

Oh and a friend offered this suggestion:
We're here, some of us can hear, others are deaf, but we're all DEF!

I took away their access to 90's hip-hop for a day for their use of def while abusing homonyms.

For what it is worth, not all deaf people find hearing impaired offensive. One of my best friends - who is deaf - prefers hearing impaired.

And Sweetwater Brewing Co.
That bottom one is AWESOME. Our semi formal shirts looked like Newcastle labels but that is one of the nicest rush shirts I've ever seen.

Our homecoming shirts this year were Newcastle. I wish I could find a picture somewhere.
BUT, we do have some arguments in chapter over "beer label t-shirts". Some people think it gives a bad impression. I don't know, I don't really care...they look good.
Well, wearing ACTUAL beer label t shirts gives a bad impression as well as being right out of the GDI playbook. The SweetWater one didn't even look that much like the label to be honest, the only part that gives it away to me is "Don't Float the Mainstream."
You're not bad for a Gator. This probably isn't the thread to say it but you guys get a bad rap for your GDIs and their affinity for jorts, most of the fraternity brothers I've met from there are really cool, CLASSY guys. (our chapter there is rebuilding so they get a free pass for a few more years) Alabama is still unbeatable in terms of class though, I had so much fun when we played them in Jax because all of their fans were classy and knew a decent amount about football.

They still represent you and your org so I would think no chapter gets a "free pass" ever. You're so concerned with some random guy wearing your org's name that I would think a brother would be held to an even higher standard.

You truly are clueless.

You just said that a chapter gets a free pass for a few years - if I'm so "clueless," then please tell me what that means to you. It sounds like the rules of your org don't apply to them and they get to do whatever they want and that sure sounds like to me, that they can potentially damage the so great reputation that you say FIJI has. Oh, I'm sorry, Phi Gam since FIJI "sounds goofy" :D

ETA: I'm not the only one who feels that people wearing paraphenalia of an org represent the whole group when they do. Which explains why some say not to drink in letters, etc. Like I said, I would think you would hold your brothers to a higher standard then to let them slide just because they're rebuilding. DTD recolonized at UGA and their standards were even higher than before. Sounds like you're the one who's clueless.

I know the current president, and he's a good guy. This spring, he told someone that they would only get a bid if he cut his hair...and he did.

If we're giving free passes, then I have several of our chapters to put on the list.

Oh, and we're working on the jort problem. It's a long process, but the first step was cajorts, and they've been completely wiped out. (cargo jean shorts)
Cajorts... can't say that I've EVER seen those. Its hard to believe that people there would still wear them after being called out by Sports Illustrated. Y'all have some of the unfrattiest GDI's ever.
I would really like to see our chapter there go in the right direction but it takes time. We're still recovering here from some crap that went down in 2000, not a hazing violation or anything but some stuff happened that really hurt us. In the last 4 years though we have come up from being hated to being well respected around campus. Our past presidents have been a big part of that.

It means that they are currently not as good as I would like them to be. They are making strides though and with time I think that they will come around.

Hardly. I'm not talking about anything serious here, just the way they are looked at on campus.

You know, every sorority has its loonies - people who slipped through the cracks, but unfortunately for Zeta, a disproportionate amount of those women seemed to have found their way to GC. There are a bunch of awesome Zetas on here, but a few of them have just ruined it.

Of course I know all about the "tiers." But your comment about letting them slide for a few years just seemed wrong to me. You talk of being "fratty" (a word not used at my school but that I now know the meaning of thanks to GC) yet you allow some brothers to not live up to these high standards you speak of. Just sounds contradictory to me so I called you on it. Get over yourself and your arrogance. You're not cool cuz you're Greek and the more you have to post that you are on the internet, the less cool that makes you. If you truly want to be "fratty," be more of a gentleman.

Yeah, it's better, but she's still loosing points for arguing with the Fratty.

SthnZeta - you need to learn when to stop. You're not going to change the Fratty's mind, so what's the point of arguing? He's always going to one-up you, because he's willing to say whatever it takes to get you riled up. And he's apparently good at it. So, either ignore him, or when all else fails, try a LOLcat.

If you're gonna call me out for continuing to get on his case, then at least include everyone else in the "pile-on." I may be talking at him more than others, but I am certainly not alone. And I love LOLCats - they're like greeting cards, there's one for every occasion!

teh is "leet speak" used here only to make fun of others
Teh Cult refers to a person who referred to the snarky girls of GC as a "cult" (in which case I should be richer) and it was so silly a thread was formed welcoming all to the cult.

Intarwebs probably refers to one of those politicians who tried to sound intelligent about the internet and failed, but I'll have to look it up. Either way it's another stupid saying that gets used in fun. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interweb.

Oh and spelling it with the A is just one more reference to leetspeak.

"Let them slide for a few years" - Meaning, they are newly back on campus, and will not be held to your organizations Southern guidelines until they have been on campus for a number of years and re-established themselves.

Thus the "free pass" statement.

I understand some "locations" now. :p

And I'm no ritual expert, but my guess for the salt shaker (besides the rimming of the cocktail glasses of course) is that it represents GCers need to take things with a "grain of salt" and/or a reference to those who clearly can't or don't... guess I can't get confirmation of that without getting killed or needing to offer a first-born or something, though, huh? :o

I understand what it meant, I was giving Fratty a hard time since he's a huge Greek snob. He contradicted himself by talking about all his high standards, but this chapter doesn't have to live up to that since they're rebuilding. Makes little sense. Aaaahhh, ookay. I hate missing a joke or point of something, which I clearly did yesterday. I misread his sentence yesterday and didn't get that "shocker" was the key word there. Clueing off your post here I waded back into urban dictionary and NOW I get it. LOL. Man, I hate getting old and out of touch. But as the cliche goes, you do learn something every day.

I liked this entry the best in relation to the context of that thread:
Not merely the sexual act ... but also the hand position used to perform said act (ring finger and thumb touching, all other fingers extended)-- especially when displayed in a context, such as a sporting event or school function, where it has absolutely nothing to do with actual digital penetration of a woman and everything to do with trying to impress one's friends with how unoriginal one is.
The pimple-faced teen, trying desperately to win the approval of his peers, flashed "the shocker" at the exact moment his yearbook photo was taken, despite the fact that he had never even seen a vagina in person, much less stuck his fingers in one, and that if he ever did, HE would be so "shocked" that he'd probably faint.

Hey, come on now, those were two different conversations I was having. The one about "backing away" was with OTW when I realized the OP may be an old troll coming back that she'd dealt with before and then Kevin replied to my question about the picture where I noticed one of the guys flashing what looked like some kind of "hand sign" (and thus the applicability of that urban dictionary entry I posted). I admit that particular reference has not (until now thanks to the mind-broadening power of GC) been part of my clearly aged knowledge base until today. Here's Kevin's post that sparked the "shocker" search: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/showpost.php?p=1569731&postcount=12
