I really meant that he was not aging himself. I only LOLed because he said it. I also really meant what I said about the library. My mother and I went to the library a WHOLE lot when I was little and there was no internet, only a card catalogue....lol.

Oh I was agreeing with everything you said. :)

Aww, 2 distinct NPHC orgs being nice to each other, very cute. Regarding this topic, as a Non-Greek, I have received personal/annoying questions from various BGLO and LGLO's regarding the topic of being paddled:

1. Why don't you want to be paddled?
I never said I didn't want to be paddled, and I sure as hell never said that I wished to be paddled, so stop assuming shit.

2. Are your friends afraid of being paddled?
Ask them.

3. Do you think you're going to be paddled?
It doesn't matter. Paddling is not my #1 fear. =\

I had to bump this to add this odd question:

"Do you do weird things with animals?"

What they meant by that, I have NO idea. And I really didn't wanna find out.

I also get the "what's AET?" question. I tell them it's a sigma. Sadly enough, my school was huge on engineering, and half the kids who would ask me had all taken calc. There are sigmas all over the place in those courses, and they still referred to it as an E. Sad.

And when people (generally students) would ask me about paying for my friends, I'd always respond in the same way... "I didn't pay for my friends, I invested in a lifetime of camaraderie, service, and tradition, shared with people across the world. What did you spend your money on? A new Playstation?" (or whatever the major "toy" is at the time). Usually people don't know what to say. it's fun.

I'm glad this was bumped! I would have never read it otherwise.

My favorite replies when people find out I'm in a sorority:

"What? But you seem so nice!" (As if I have to be a stuck-up snob to be a sorority girl.)
"How many frat guys did you have to sleep with before they let you in?"
"But you're SMART."
"You're in which sorority? I thought they were all ugly!"

the first day of our pledging process i stepped outside and onto a piece of wood, spraining the hell out of my ankle...

...so imagine the next day i show up at my parents house on crutches.

mom: i thought you said they werent going to whoop your a**...
dad: yeah, you said you werent into that type of thing.
me: i didnt let them whoop my a**. i let them break my ankle, like Kathy Bates in Misery.

That one really gets to me. But when I started to correct the boy (who went to a school without greeks), he said, "Please don't deny guys of their fantasies."

Now, he mentions one of the myths, and I just go along with it, but with a LOT of sarcasm - just so he knows how stupid these fantasies are!

Two questions I seem to get quite often from GDIs:

How much were you hazed?
Whether I was or not, what's it matter to you?
Do you guys wear robes?
None of your business if we do or not.

Senusret I

So the answers are obviously:

A lot.

and

Yes.

Yes, we were beaten heavily by our masters wearing over sized pointy hooded black robes.

What gets me is when people criticize you for being Greek for no good reason except that they themselves aren't Greek and think they don't need it, are too good for it, etc. I know it's not for everybody, and that's OK. Being independent isn't for everybody either, and that's OK too. Live and let live, people. IMHO, the people who criticize Greeks the most are those who, deep down, wanted to be Greek but, for whatever reason, didn't pledge.

I always hated: "Why do you have 'EX' on your shirt?" Seriously, how many people do you know make their -e's like this?

I used to know a guy that said he used to be a member of "OX" (just like the animal) fraternity. Is it a wonder that he "used to be a member?"

It might have to do with the goat myth.

We had a lot of people refer to it as the "Ox House" (and they even had a logo with an ox on it) but the brothers themselves never said "Hi, I'm an Ox"....it was always "Hi, I'm a Theta Chi."

Ohh I like this thread! I was only initiated about a month ago but the list goes on and on for the ridiculous things I've heard, but the most annoying things tend to be statements rather than questions.

"So tell me, how did they haze you?"
"I don't want to buy my friends" (As many other people also mentioned)
"I don't want to be told what to do"
"I heard fat girls can't wear letters" (This one still is :eek::eek: to me)
"I would hate being around so many girls"
"The girls in your sorority are bitches.. you have to agree, right?" ( not true at all and kind of hurtful)
"I would never join Kappa, I heard they're all blonde" (I guess people don't realize when they say this to me that I'm naturally blonde, but doesn't impact who I am as a person at all. Not to mention that there's only about 30 other blondes in a chapter of 130)

Ok, my rant is now over :p

From a young lady who was unsure if she was or was not a member of an NPC:

What sorority were you in?

Usually from other NPCers:

What org is that?

GDIs:

What does all that stuff on your jacket mean?

What did you have to do to get in?

Can you do your call?

From some of my GDI friends:
"How come you guys don't have real Greek letters?"
"Do you guys have a secret handshake?"
"How often do you get paddled?"

Just did a quick runthrough on NIC, NPC & NPHC. The organizations that do represent themselves by Greek Letters (as opposed to Acacia, Farmhouse, etc) which *look* like Latin Alphabet letters *only* in each are
Alpha Chi Rho
Kappa Alpha Order
Kappa Alpha Society
Nu Alpha Kappa
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Zeta Beta Tau

Zeta Tau Alpha

"Why would a sorority pick letters that look bad in English and Greek?"
"Why does your shirt say 'EAT'?"

1. It wasn't the first set of letters the found picked; it was changed
2. It's SDT, not STD.
3. They weren't called STDs back in the day, they were called VDs and probably other random names.
4. You can't tell the different between the letter A and a delta/triangle?

Perhaps these are more "comments" about Greek Life, but I personally get annoyed by:

"I heard that x no. of women congregating together constitutes a brothel"

and

"Why would I want to pay to have friends?"

Sigh....

hahah it's funny b/c I get people asking sometimes: "What is... EOE?... EIE? E...OIE?... E-circle-with-a-line-E?"

I also had a group of girls run up to my Brothers and I once screaming: "OMG!!!! I LOVE SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON!!!!" Φ =/= A

I actually had a guy I went to high school with look at me and read my shirt as he said, "Eye-Owm, what is Eye-Owm?" He saw the "Phi" and thought it was an I and an O combined. It was weird he said that instead of recognizing it was a sorority. Generally you see images of Greeks in movies and I figured that he would have picked up on that. I guess not.

True story: I had someone I went to high school come up to me in a Walmart in my hometown and say "A...Triangle...uhhh....what's that?" *forehead smack*

Related: a sister's dad was from England and drove down Greek row soon after she moved into our chapter house. He drove past Delta Tau Delta and said 'Triangle T Triangle' and then past Sigma Alpha Mu and asked why Sam had his own house. We could NOT stop laughing

It's funny. I had a friend who was interested in DTD but he didn't know what the letters were, so he just drew them out in the air for me. I thought it was funny but also smart since he obviously knew the Tau wasn't a T, no matter how it looked.

Here's another: just the other day, I had my car in the mechanic shop and as I was taking stuff off my car (my license frame has my Zeta letters on it) and the guy clearly didn't know that the "O" was a "Phi".

And another: Before I became a member of Z Phi B, people would always ask me if A Phi O was a sorority and why was I in a fraternity or they didn't know women were allowed in frats. Also A O Q was the common one I would get since I do wear my A Phi O letters around my neck.

Some things just irk the heck out of me.
