I recently stumbled over some old junior high school pictures of me, needless to say I was cracking up the whole time at the styles back than, I thought I was the bomb, but now these styles seem so silly looking to me.
My question to you guys is, what styles would you bring back whether it be fashion, music artist, a particular dance etc....and what styles do you hope never come back! And lastly, are there any current styles out that just make you question "what the hell were they thinking?"
I hope gumby's and big bamboo earrings never come back in style...as for current trends...I am not for the hairstyles that look like cake decorations!

I PRAY big dookey rope chains (think Run DMC/Slick Rick) never re-surface. I can also do without the basket weaves, the bob (like several layers, not just one), the cellophanes (not hair color/highlights...but BURGUNDY cellophanes). I can do without the Gucci/Loius Vuitton wear (the sweatshirts and stuff). I can do without leather colored bomber jackets. I can do without cuorduroy pants (girls in my hood used to rock the TIGHT http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif ones with Fila shoes and the shirt to match. I can do without rings on EVERY finger. I can do without feather cut hairstyles. I can do without that fuschia colored lipstick every young black girl THOUGHT was cute. Everything else was okay...I think.

DeltaBrat, although I usually agree with your posts I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you on something this time around http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif...because those leather colored bomber jackets were the BIZZOMB!!! I had like every flavor! and the yellow ones...Oh my God!! I would definitely bring those joints back. (Yes, I said joints) But if I never see door knocker earrings, MCM jackets, and jelly shoes again it would be too soon. What about that hair style which consisted of a part going down the middle of your head, with the two corn braids on each side (God forbid there was a bang)? I am all for bringing back old skool rap (Krs-1, Roxanne Roxanne...all 30 of them...the pre-"In the House" L.L. Cool J...Yall know "I need Love", Big Ole Butt") Speaking of big ole butts...remember "Doing the Butt" I loved that song, even though they never mentioned my name. I loved all the suede pumas (every flavor)...Hey! Where you guys live, has anything recently went out of style? By recently, I mean like within the last year or two. Like I know in Brooklyn it's considered the eighth deadliest sin to rock high top Reeboks any more. And those down filled "Bear" jackets...definitely a no-no. Oh my God! remember those Michael jackson "Thriller" jackets?!? I had the pleather ones...Somebody stop me...I can go on about this all day!!

Remember those blue or green listicks that changed color according to your karma/body chemistry? Boy, I couldn't tell you how many times I got suckered into that one. They all turned red/reddish and stained your lips. My lips would be soooooo dry, but they were like bright red. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif Needless to say, grandmother was not pleased.

Oh, what about wearing the different color socks on each leg. You know, if you had on a red shirt and blue shorts you would wear a red sock and a blue sock (in that order) on the right leg and then a blue sock and a red sock on the left leg.
Remember Lotto shoes where you could remove and exchange the colored symbols?
Blue eyeliner anyone???
Remember the short tight suede skirts that everyone would wear with the silk tops?
What about biker shorts (knowing you ain't riding nobody's bike or doing anything athletic for that matter)!

Hey! Did you ladies have that one shop in your neighborhood that sold all the fake stuff? It was where all the wanna be's bought they're fake ass four-finger rings and bamboo earrings. They had "gold" chains on a big old round spool looking thing and it cost like 50 cents an inch. Here's how you buy it:
Pookie: I'd like to purchase a dope ass chain, you know...like the one RunDMC and nem be wearing
Shop Owner: What lenghth?
Pookie: Oh, give me 18 inches of that...and make it Panamanian "Gold" *wink, wink*
There was this girl i went to school with that lived up in that store. She had the "gold" teeth and everything. She rocked the Gazelle glasses with the phat "Damaged" suit all the time! Those sure were the days!

Oh my.... the list is long!
Things I hoped I would never see again that have resurfaced:
-bell-bottoms (sorry, still don't like them!)
-clogs
-those baseball-shirt style t-shirts (sorry, don't know the name - the ones where one color is the body, and the sleeves are another)
-hair parted down the center and really, really flat
-platform shoes
Things that don't seem to have come back around (and I sure hope they don't! lol)
-culottes
-knickers
-"prairie-style" blouses (the kind with big ruffles down the front or sides)
-parachute pants (especially worn super-tight!)
-"mall hair" - sprayed until it stood up about six inches from the forehead
-leg-warmers worn over jeans (though something tells me I may have seen this at the mall not that long ago)
-those late 80s/early 90s "sorority bows" - big flat bows on a barrette (sorry - I had to go there - I had them to!)

As for fashion, I only have three things to say:
1) USED
2) DAMAGED
3) CROSS COLORS!
It is a wonder we didn't all go blind!!!!
As for hairstyles: Does anyone remember the hairstyle girls wore that looked like popcorn... you know the one made using a fishnet hair scarf? How about the hairstyle that had your hair shoulder length on one side and touching the top of your ear on the other? Guys with the Kid (from Kid 'n Play) hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh top "box", and later Bobby Brown's "steps" (Don't be Cruel)!!! And last but not least, NAMEPLATES, which consisted of having your name on you herringbone, four-finger ring, or HUGE earrings {do y'all remember the earring with the key Janet (Miss Jackson if your nasty) made popular?}
That's all Folks.

I am sorry Sexy Mocha but the bomber jackets weren't the bomb here. Yeah I remember the store with all the cheap stuff, it was called the Compton Swapmeet http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
What about the candy house. Everyone had a house on their block that sold ALL the bomb candy you couldn't find at the store. Like sour pickles, not dill, but sour. Hell, pickled eggs, fire jolly ranchers, the little bag of sunflower seeds (cuz no one NEEDS like 500 sunflower seeds). Blue acrylic fingernails. Fluorescent socks and accessories a la Madonna. Creepers, tapered Dickies and turtlenecks (people from LA remember dance groups sporting these like, KODs, SexJerks, etc. 1986-89...damn I'm old). The rap music WAS the bomb, what I wouldn't do to hear some Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick/ Real Roxanne, Roxanne Shante/ MC Lyte/ LL Cool Jay before he became TOO sexy / Biz Markie/
I KNOW y'all remember Ready for the World (we called them ready for the Curl)/ Force MDs/ Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam with Full Force/
Cabbage PAtch/Robocop/Smurf/PeeWee HErman/ The Guess/ The Prep (a la Janet Jackson in her 80's videos...I can't remember which one).

You know I had a jerry curl and then I had the key earing that Janet had.
L.A. gears with the two different color laces.
combat boots (jodeci boots)
The socks (three different colors /different order on both sides....lol)
And you know it was hard as heck to grow out those hairstyles...one side of my hair still grows longer than the other.
Now lets go way back...remeber on them winter days when you had four sweaters (one of which you swore was really a boys sweater) the snow suit and two pairs of socks on just to go outside and play.
And Micheal Jackson......remember when it useto be like a movie premier when his videos came out. Thriller was like a family event..everyone had they popcorn and stuff sitting around the TV

Okay...
I KNOW everyone (at least in Cali) remembers Egyptian Lover songs...like Technicolor and all the "breathy" sounding songs (uh...aah, uh...aah...okay y'all who know get the picture).
What about the LA Dream Team...is in the house.
Finally I KNOW everyone was down with the Beastie Boys...Hold It Now/Brass Monkey, and the bombest song (I can't remember the name) was the one where the music is being played backwards. The Beastie Boys were the shiznit!!!
OKAY and why are we all reminiscing about the hip-hoppish jams...y'all know you loved some Tina Marie (she was the first Black/White woman on the scene with the nose pierce and she gets MAD love).
What about Rick James (don't act like y'all wasn't down before he and his girl burnt old girl with the crack pipe).
Mary Jane Girls was awight.
Morris Day and The Time... Eryboday Walk
Do I HAVE to say PRINCE (every Black girl wanted to be Vanity)
Remember when videos FIRST came out on BET and stuff or MTV for that matter (I'm OLD).
With videos like Carribean Queen
JErmaine Stewart (you don't have to take your clothes off...I didn't like the song, but the memories of when things were sooo much easier is still good.)
Sh*% I KNOW folks remember Herbie Han****'s video with the "legs" walking around with no body.
Remember Fat Boys are Back and you know they can never be wack.
I can't even front...Duran Duran/Spandau Ballet/Tears for Fears/Depeche Mode/

And while we are talking about songs and videos remeber when MTV actually played videos..lol
Why ya'll got make me pull out another one of my list now here goes...
Ways To Tell If You're Stuck in the 1980's
1. Your fondest childhood memory is when Skippy got his head stuck in the banister
2. You relax by putting on your legwarmers and dancing to the Footloose soundtrack
3. You think the two Coreys are "totally awesome"
5. Punky Brewster is your hero
7. You still resent your parents for not installing a dumbwaiter in your house like Webster's
8. The only video games you play are Frogger and Pac Man
9. You're building your own Clockwork Smurf
10. Your summer attire is Jellies and Jams
11. A-Ha's Take on Me is still your favorite video
12. You consider yourself truly, truly, truly outrageous, much like Jem and the Holograms
13. You wonder why more people don't wear high heels, tight jeans, and lacy ankle socks
15. Every time you go to the beach you look for Snorks
16. You're still upset Madonna and Sean broke up
17 You know who Stinky Sullivan is

She's fantastic
Made of plastic
Microchips here and there
She's a smaaaaall wonder
And she'll make your heart beat ????
What the hell are the rest of the words? Hmm. It's too late to be callin people up like "Ay, you remember the words to that show with the robot girl? Li'l white girl. Don't act like you don't know the song...."
Okay. Blu.... lemme borrow those Different World tapes.

Let's see, things I hope never come back:
1)Baby hair-you know how females slicked the edges of their hair-yuck!
2)fat laces in the sneakers
3)the human beat box-or as I call it, the human spit box
4)high top fades!
I do however wish the wop would come back-I loved that dance as well as the robot. I wish the whole care free attitude of the 80's would come back. You know, when you could wear your favorite shirt, with your favorite pants-even if it didn't match-you just felt good. Everyone's too caught up in the superficial things. I know in the 80's, I didn't care!

1)Baby hair-you know how females slicked the edges of their hair-yuck!
Why did I have a special toothbrush to brush down that baby hair..knowing by the end of the day it would be all sweatty and knappy
And remeber those two braids you got in your hair right in the front of your head one on each side to hold down that hard to tame hair....ya'll know you gotta picture with them
And when you had to stay up all Saturday night before Easter to get your hair braided until you got old enough to actually get those bannana curls in them....and we ain't even go get on Easter outfits..lol

How 'bout this DELTABRAT. I remember once I was scrunching down in the chair because I could feel the heat real close to my ears. I hated feeling that heat so close to my skin. Anyway, my grandmother (who raised me) dropped the hotcomb down the back of my shirt trying to pull me up. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif She felt soooooo bad. (Yeah, I milked it for a week) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Unfortunately, the next Saturday after she washed my hair, I was back in the chair.

VERY few people i know remember them.
hey, does anyone remember popples and nosy bears? popples you could turn almost inside out and smack the shit out of someone else with them...and nosy bears, i believe you squeezed thier tummy and thier nose did something. i know i still have my nosy bears lunchbox and thermos. Things I WISH would come back:
1) Ok, some might hate me, but I was big time 'New Kids on the Block' fan. I STILL listen to the music.
2) Jelly shoes. I loved those things.
3) Monster 80's love songs. Have any of ya'll ever seen the "Monster 80's" sound track they advertise on TV? I want that soooo bad!
4) Respect. When I was in school, we respected our teachers/parents/adults. Nowdays, the schools are sooo out of control. So that's one thing I wish would come back.
5) Atari. If I HAD to buy a video game, I'd want atari. I loved those things.
6) Being allowed to play with murcury in classes. I know it's bad for you now, but I always loved playing with murcury.
7) Big Earings. I had soooo many huge earings. Actually, I still have them, sitting in my jewelry box. I'd love to break those bad boys out.
8) I loved those little friendship pins. We put little colored beads on a safety pin and attach them to our shoe laces. Those things were so cute.
Things I could really do without:
1) Jelly bracelets all the way up your arm
2) Jeans with writing all over/slashed knees
4) two words BIG HAIR
5) different colored socks. The obcession in the 80's was to have every color BUT white, now I try hard to never wear colored socks. Black and white are the only 2 colors I own.
6) Biker shorts. OMG--what the hell were we thinking?
7) Anything PINK. That movie "Pretty in Pink" with molly ringwald (sp?) did it for me, my entire wardrobe was PINK! If I never wear pink again, I'd be lovin it.
8) Hypercolor shirts. The one's that changed colors when your body temperature
changed.
9) Stickers that you could put on your arm like a tatoo. I used to wear those things ALL the time.

Okay, I had to say more. Now I know at least some of ya'll remember the hand games we played. This sound familiar?:
*feet stomping, hands clapping*
My name is Nikki and my color is blue,
I stole your boyfriend cuz he did not want you
And that ain't all for today
the butt is stinky but the back is okay.
what the h%!@ was I talking about?!? I was like nine years old. I didn't have no man!
Or this one:
tetherball (pronounced "tedaball"), tetherball I said "aoosha asha"
tetherball, tetherball I said "aoosha ash"
My name is Nikki (tetherball)
I'm super cool (tetherball)
You mess with me (tetherball)
You a fool (tetherball)
I got this n!#@! (tetherball)
On my mind (tetherball)
Yes mess with him (tetherball)
And I will kick your behind (what?)
Kick your behind! (uh!)
And I was saved from the jheri curl, but my cousin wasn't as fortunate. And I didn't go in with that brown toothbrush everyone used for their hair, but I wasn't saved from the pressing comb. Or this little-toothed comb my father used to call "Combaloo." "Come in here and bring Combaloo," and I'd be like "no, Daddy!" * http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif So glad I went natural and comb my hair with nothing but a pick!

And don't let her lose one of thoe hard to find a** pumps of hers...she was all over the whole neighborhood ready to beat down whomever had the shoe. Regardless of the fact that they never really fit her feet anyways.
Same went for the diamond stud earrings of hers (they had to be like 8-10 karats...when you think of them in relation to the size of her ears).
That's right, Skipper WAS her little sister.
My Barbie beat her down too, for trying to get with Ken. It woulda helped if there were some other men in the neighborhood...damn...Ken was the only testosterone (barely) for miles.
Yeah, Barbie had some adventures...

god forbid someone try to steal barbie's car *i had the 57 chevy*. that bitch would HUNT you down and kill you once she found you. she'd dismember the guilty barbie *usually nevada...* and put the head in the trunk of the car as a "trophy" to show anyone in the neighborhood what happened if someone messed with her.
wonder if any of that rubbed off on me....

I think Barbie was an undercover madame, myself. As stated earlier, how could she have all that fly stuff and chill all day. The doctor/lawyer/equestrian stuff were all fronts for her illegal pimpstress activities. Then she went to jail (around the time we all stopped giving a damn about her), now she's back and she has like 12 jobs. She also has a belly-button, now. Ain't that some sh**.
Well, let me continue with some other stuff...
I KNOW everyone remembers Rubik's Cube.
Remember when you'd peel the stickers off and arrange them so it "appeared" as if though you really figured the sh** out.
Remember that snake thingy where you could twist and turn it into different shapes.
WOW...games...
Remember Twister
The Oiuja Board (in my neighborhood, most Black fols wouldn't TOUCH that type of stuff)
Remember "Light as a feather...stiff as a board" at the slumber parties...everyone would lift up one person with two fingers only and they'd (supposedly) float to the top of the ceiling.
Remember "Bloody Mary" in the girls bathroom.
Someone would end up with scratches on their body.
Hell...Hide and go seek/ Hide and go get it (ghetto version with all the horny little neighborhood boys)...I NEVER played that...I really didn't.
Tag and hopscotch (of course)

remember jailbreak? man, i played that around my whole neighborhood...it was awesome! hopscotch was cool until it rained. and remember bubbles? i ALWAYS played with bubbles. my parents say one of thier fondest moments of my childhood was when i'd play bubbles all day and the next time it rained, the driveway foamed!

Hey yall forgot something. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK! yall remember them? ohhh what about the Mchammer pants? Oh and the Macauly culkin cartoon that came on saturdays? (i'll admit it i watched it). The slap braclets they hurt whenever you put them on your wrist. Those BIGO bows that mom would put in your hair, your bow would be bigger then your head. LOL! Ohh and what about staying up to 3am having your friend call the boy YOU liked.... I always liked watching full house, and when i got older i liked 90210 (the 30yrs in H.S. now that i look back they looked way to old for high school students)
and i loved the wonder years... Oh and just to let you know i'm 18 and i feel really old! I also bought my first greatest hits cd the other day. New Kids on the block--- http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ~ok that was fun~

DeltaBrat,
Are you serious about someone getting scratched by the Bloody Mary game? I was always too afraid.
Hey guys remember that game "Operations" and a slinky, a slinky! UNO, remember when rollar skates were the bomb! How about hand ball, and those ugly stretch pants that had the elastic part that went under your feet? What ever happened to Big Daddy Kane, and MC Shane?

Hey:
No, that was the supposed "myth" surrounding the game. One girl did have scratches but we all assumed someone else in the restroom (besides the dead Mary Quenn of Scott) did it.
Yes, Slinky was cool. The stretch pants were hideous. Big Daddy Kane fell off after that rumor that he had AIDS...remember. MS Shane...who knows.
Operation is ABSOLUTELY my favorite game. I JUST bought one for my son (yeah, right) last X-mas. The loud buzzing noise is too much for him to handle right now, though. That friggin' Adam's apple is a b**** to get out...damn!!

AAAAAHH! Not the Bloody Mary game! I am a grown ass woman and the mere mention of that game sends chills down my back! The first time I tried that "game" I ran out of the bathroom crying right in the middle of it...needless to say that was the last time I ever played Bloody Mary! As for "Operation", I would never get it for my child! The game almost gave me a nervous breakdown when I was a kid! I acquired the "shakes" trying to hold that little red tweezer looking thing trying to save that man's life! And oh God when the dam thing buzzed...it's just too much pressure on a kid! Well what do you know? I'm not the only one who used to collect fireflies in jars...unfortunately I did not let the little buggers go. I kept them in the jar until the next morning ...at which time I gave them a proper burial. (Yes, I was a morbid kid...but it's no worse than what some of you did to poor Barbie. I won't name any names!) My favorite games were Life and Monopoly. I was always the shoe...God forbid someone tried to be the shoe. Let's just say it was not pretty!

Speaking of roller skates...remember when your grandma would make you some roller skates out of an old pair of sneakers? Am I old?

Y'all, this thread is the funniest thing I have ever read in my WHOLE life.
I have been CRYING reading it - what were we THINKING?
I can't believe nobody mentioned:
Debbie Gibson, Chuck Taylor Converse, Coca-Cola shirts, Ghostbusters, leather ties, pegging the cuffs of your jeans by pinching them and folding them before you roll them, stretchy lace headbands (or socks), Rainbow Brite, Friday Night Videos, switching the heads on Barbie and Ken...
I knew every word to "All Cried Out" by Lisa Lisa. Then again, I am so old that when they play "White Lines" on the "retro hour" on the radio, I know all the words.
Don't get sick... but have y'all heard that re-make of "Boys in the Hood"? One day at work, the original came on the radio, and I was singing the whole thing, even the @#$% parts, and my employees (all still in college) thought I was insane. They said "we didn't know this was a cover". They had never heard of NWA.
Personally, I want big hair to come back - it makes my waist look smaller. ;-)

Hey remember when Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire in the pepsi commercial, and when he started wearing surgical masks everywhere he went, how about when the rest of his family tried going solo...Rebbie Jackson with "Centipede", Jermaine Jackson with "Do what you Do", Janet Jackson's "Control" how about that music video that was like a cartoon...I don't remember the name of the group but it was a rock group...remember when girls used to dress like Madonna? Oh my god! What about MoonWalking! Turning the fire hydrant on in the summer and running through it! Freshman day at school where all the freshmans got beat up! Whitney Housten's pre-Bobby days! Wow I didn't think this thread would run this long....could you imagine if we did this again for the late ninety's and two thousands what we would come up with 20 years from now?

anyway, yeah...reminiscing is awesome. that's all...

Okay, my turn!
One of my coworkers is stuck in the 80's! She wears styrrup pants with the elf shoes...you know! The ones that are black, kinda tight, with that annoying elf-like flap. They're just short enough to show the styrrup! LOL. She still perms her hair (although I heard that's coming back in style). Her sweaters or shirts are usually MULTIPATTERNED and BRIGHT! It's just totally 80's. She even puts on an 80's radio statation at work http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif! The only GOOD thing is she doesn't wear BLUE eyeshadow and RED lipstick! THANK GOD FOR THAT ONE!
