Does anyone here have a least favorite carol? I have been caught in traffic once too often listening to "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" and I have decided I hate it! The bits about "jingle-bell-ing" and "mistletoe-ing" make me nuts and so does the part where (I guess to make it rhyme), they sing "Your friends are telling you to 'be of good cheer'" (What would you do to a friend who told you that?) Then to cap it off, there's the line "there'll be scary ghost stories"! (HUHH?) Who tells those at Christmas?

Ugh...Call me Scrooge, but I hate Christmas music. The traditional church-style music is bearable though. I worked in a mall over the holidays a couple of years ago, and just haven't been the same since.

I'm a transfer from Maryland, so all Christmas music drives me crazy because its 85 degrees today (i know--boo hoo http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif ) and i'm just like whats going on? Wheres the cold? snow? ice?
But one song in particular I remember from when I was young, was I'll be home for Christmas, because my Dad hated it. While he was stationed in Vietnam (over Christmas) he said they played it like every 5 minutes, or so it felt to him. So he never let it be played when I was younger!

Speaking of warm Christmas's, has anyone seen that commercial where the guy orders biodegradable packing peanuts, dumps them all over his rock lawn, with cactus's and all, and then buys a shovel and boots online, and shovel's his sidewalk off? I think it's hilarious!

Mall employee for 1 Christmas Season which was 1 too long! Talk about being sick of the same music over and over!! The only thing worse was like 8 years ago with those freaking dancing flowers - they were sound activated and would dance until the music stopped....urrgghhhhhh!!! And now the Billy Bass sensation! I actually stepped in front of a little girl at the Cracker Barrel who kept setting that thing off. I could only take so much!
Oh yeah - back to the topic - I too do not like the Little Drummer Boy. I don't know why, but it drives me up the wall.

I am with ya'll. Here in South Texas it is always warm for the holidays. Last year, It was 78 and sunny on Christmas Day. Absolutely disgusting. Nothin' says holidays like shorts and christmas lights in palm trees. Yick!
Ad for the least fav. tune, Little Drummer Boy, or ANYTHING by Bing Crosby. did that guy ever have a musical hit OUTSIDE of the holiday season? Plus, when he hits that first note in White Christmas, he sounds like he just got punched in the gut.

I feel like the Grinch bringing this to the top again but my favorite radio station does Christmas music 24/7 from Thanksgiving on and they won't stop playing, "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year"! Jinglebelling and mistletoeing twice as much as they did when I started this thread last year!

Okay, when I worked at this jewelry store over Christmas, the manager loved Elvis. It was ridiculous. So, we had to listen to "An Elvis Christmas" over and over and over again. Specifically "Blue Christmas"...just thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach.

My brother and I had this Chipmunks record and a bright blue record player. We would play that record over and over and over. Drove my dad INSANE! :p
The best part was when we discovered if you put a regular record on the player but on fast speed, they sound like Chipmunks too! :D
And...if you put the Chipmunks record on fast speed, they're just one big long squeal! It's so great! :D

It's got to be "White Christmas"
Having recently moved to southern California from Pennsylvania, I can tell you that half the people in this country have fantasies about snow and the other half have actually lived in it. There's no way to win. Snow sucks. You can have a white Christmas but then you have to go out and brush it off your car and have to drive when you live on a side street that never sees a salt truck. No one here seems to truly realize that.

White Christmas. Until this year, I never really thought much of it. But now I live in a town that is formed of 4 large hills, the University being on the top of the tallest, and my dorm being on the highest part of that hill.. Literally, to get anywhere, it's downhill.. and I'm sorry. but gravel gives you no traction! It's worse than ice! Now it's white all the time, and that song just reminds me of it more and more!

I know I'm gonna get boo'ed off the board for this one, but I HATE "12 Days of Christmas" or whatever the heck that song is.
I can't stand it, can't stand it, can't stand it. It's even worse when the radio station plays the crappy "I hate Christmas" version of it...where children are screaming and men are screaming and babies are crying and the lights don't work etc. URG! It's like they play that right before Christmas just to piss everyone off that has to go out into the malls and so that mood just lingers with them and then they take it out on me when they can't find what they want because they've procrastinated too long~ but that's a whole different retail Christmas story!

I have worked the xmas season in both Macy's and Joanns... both play constant xmas music for the entire two weeks leading up the xmas and then at least weeks after. All i can say is that they ALL get annoying after a while. Hearing the same song 5 times a day even tho they are by different artists every time will sure make you sick after an 8 hour day.
One that I hear often at work is "I want a Hippopatumus for Christmas..." AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH!
And then "All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth"
"I'm Getting Nothing for Xmas..."
Just to name a few...

Ok. There's a difference between Christmas Carols and just plain old Christmas music. The former I love, especially when performed by a good choir. The latter I CAN'T STAND! I spent a while shopping with my aunt and cousin this weekend, and I couldn't believe the crap that was blaring from the speakers of the stores we visited. I wanted those people to be run over by reindeer, each and every one of them! Give me good, old fashioned Christmas Carols. That's all I need to be musically happy during this festive season.

Its a tight race between "Little Drummer Boy" & "Carol of the Bells." I don't know which is worse--singing the words "par-umm-pum-pum-pum" (more bad 5th grade choir memories)
-or-
getting stressed out at the pace/key of "hark how the bells sweet silver bells all seem to say throw cares away..." AGCH!!!
That song does anything but make me want to throw my cares away. It makes me want to scratch someone's eyes out.
Otherwise, I like most Christmas music, esp. choral--a good rendition of Handel's "Messiah" puts me in the Christmas spirit.

I'm really old fashioned and traditionalist when it comes to christmas music. I like the old, religious christmas hymns as well as other classical christmasy music like the Nutcracker Ballet music. I hate all pop-style christmas songs like the ones by Mariah Carey or N'Sync. The one exception to that rule is John Lennon's "So this is Christmas" which I really like.

If you think about it, just about all Xmas music must be really annoying for people who are of religions that don't celebrate Xmas (the religious holiday). And then, the religious songs must be really annoying for people who celebrate Xmas (the consumer holiday).

I went and saw Love Actually last night, and they sing 'All I Want for Christmas (Is you)". I still have that song in my head! I saw that someone mentioned Elvis earlier. My mom has a minor spaz when she hears 'Blue Christmas'. Apparently, her college roommate had the record, and she'd (the roommate) put it on repeat when she and her man were...uh...doing it. This will be my third Christmas of working retail. Luckily, now I work at the Limited so our holiday tape is a blend of some Christmas music, some regular music. However, my last mall job was at Boston Store (same as Bergner's/Carson Pirie Scott). We had a really obnoxious Christmas tape that only had about 2 hours worth of music on it. My very least favorite song was "Same Old Lang Syne." That's not going to make any sense to most of you, so here's some of the lyrics:
Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve
She didn't recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried
We took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totaled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged
We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car
We drank a toast to innocence, we drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness but neither one knew how
It is the most depressing song ever! My senior year I was having a really happy Christmas - had gotten into all my colleges with scholarships, had a boyfriend, family stuff was good - every time they plaid this song at work I just started to tear up. IT's so catchy too...BLAH.
I actually like pretty much all other Christmas music, carols or cheesy. I'll play it all through out the year - I've been playing it non-stop since we put up our tree at work. It makes me happy.

the Hippopotamus song is near the top of my "don't like" list, so is Most Wonderful Time of the Year. But, my absolute worst is the one my 7 year old son sings... it goes like this:
Joy to the World,
Barney's Dead
I barbecued his head.
I totally tune him out after that line so I don't know the rest. The other one I hate is :
Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg,
The batmobile lost a wheel and the joker took ballet.. hey!
Why do kids have to screw up perfectly good songs?
Dee
ETA: 8 minutes after I posted this, I got in the car to leave work, flip on the radio and the Hippo song is on. I suffered through it, wanting to hear a fave and the very next song was.. MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! Unreal!

The one I hate is this one version of jingle bells that they play at my work... it's like a jazzed up version or something... and at one point instead of singing the words "jingle bells" it has the sound of jingle bells twice and then the singers sing "bells." It has the affect of the B-I-N-G-O song little kids sing where clapping took the place of the each letter... (or at least that's what it reminds me of and I think it's STUPID.) I also don't like go tell it on the mountain... don't know why... just don't enjoy that one.

Just 10 minutes in K-Mart on Friday had me Scrooging all over the place. (I know -- any time spent in K-Mart can make you do weird things, but it really was the dreadful "music" this time.)

On the other hand, there is a Christmas song I love by Sting, but no one can tell me the name....It sounds almost Gregorian chant-like....It's luscious and sensual (NOT in a sexual way.Passionate is maybe a better word)...

LMAO at GP's Dan Fogelberg distaste. Where the heck does he live that he buys a 6 pack at the liquor store? (unless he means a 6 pack of Thunderbird bottles, which makes the song almost cool)
Due to the ever-earlier pimping of the season I hate pretty much every Christmas song except church stuff (in church) and Sleigh Ride, but Santa Baby by Madonna will be what they play continually in the eighth circle of hell if I end up there.
Although I was privileged to be present at the debut of a new song by a local songwriter called "Merry F&*#ing Christmas." Yes, this is as good as it sounds, and I wish I had a recording of it.

I cannot stand "The Little Drummer Boy" or"Feliz Navidad"
I also hate when a christmas carol that I love is remade be an artist and they turn the song into crap... especially when they completely disregard the melody in favor of yelling a long string of notes.
I have a love/hate relationship with "My Grown-Up Christmas List"... because that song is so horribly cheesy, yet it always makes me sad because I do want the world to be all peaceful and happy lol.
On a positive note.. I love O Holy Night... I will never get tired of that song (although I do cringe when I think about high school choir concerts and people singing the song who clearly should not have been....)

For the record, the song is called "The Twelve Pains of Christmas" performed by The Bob Rivers Comedy Group, and I absolutely LOVE that song! I was laughing my butt off when I heard that song, and look forward to whenever my radio station plays it (WSNY-Sunny 95, Columbus, Ohio).
I also love Blue Christmas by Seymour Swine (Porky Pig under a different name)
Songs I hate.
Jingle Bells barked by dogs.
Jingle Bells "sang" by a laughing guy.
Santa Baby by Madonna (Eartha Kitt is THE ONLY one who should be legally permitted to sing that song. She is the best!!)
Santa Claus is Coming To Town, if performed by anyone other than the Jackson 5 or The Pointer Sisters
O Holy Night by anyone other than Mariah Carey (I love how she hits the ultra-high notes).

I have a special reason to hate this song, as it came out a couple months after my daddy died. In fact, I have tears in my eyes as I copy this. You have to put the right amount of whine & pathos into this:
Christmas Shoes
It was almost Christmas time
there I stood in another line
tryin to buy that last gift or two
not really in the Christmas mood
standing right in front of me
was a little boy waiting anxiously
pacing around like little boys do
and in his hand he held
a pair of shoes
and his clothes were worn and old
he was dirty from head to toe
and when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say
Sir I wanna buy these shoes, for my momma please
it's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
could you hurry sir?
daddy says there's not much time
you see she's been sick for quite a while
and I know these shoes will make her smile
and I want her to look beautiful
if momma meets Jesus tonight
they counted pennies for what seemed like years
and the cashier said son there's not enough here
he searched his pockets frantically
and he turned and he looked at me
and he said momma made Christmas good at our house
most years she just did without
tell me sir
what am I gonna do?
some how I gotta buy her these Christmas shoes
so I laid the money down
I just had to help him out
and I'll never forget
the look on his face
when he said momma's gonna look so great
sir I wanna buy these shoes, for my momma please
it's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
could you hurry sir?
daddy says there's not much time
you see she's been sick for quite a while
and I know these shoes will make her smile
and I want her to look beautiful
if momma meets Jesus tonight
I knew i caught a glimpse of heaven's love as he thanked me and ran out
I know that God has sent that little boy to remind me
what Christmas is all about
sir I wanna buy these shoes, for my momma please
it's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
could you hurry sir?

I'm so glad I've never heard the Christmas donkey song. Or Christmas Shoes. :)
My least favorites:
"It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" - It's the most overplayed song of the season!
"Jingle Bell Rock" - I used to like this song until a few years ago, when I was at a restaurant with my ex-boyfriend. We were seated right near the entrance, and there was a motion-sensitive Dancing Santa that played that song if someone walked by. It was a pretty busy night...so we got to hear it over and over and over and OVER...I seriously wanted to throw that Santa out the window.
"Little Saint Nick" - Beach Boys
"Wonderful Christmastime" - Paul McCartney
"All I Want For Christmas Is You" - Mariah Carey
"I'll Be Home For Christmas"
Any Christmas song played before Thanksgiving or after Christmas.
By mid-December I hate almost all of it because I've heard it way too much! :D

ACK!!! As if hearing morose or silly Christmas songs aren't bad enough, I was sent a site that has countdown tickers until Christmas!! It had what to do each day, until the big day - at which time, I assume, you get to drink eggnog until you're silly and paste mistletoe on your forehead! But I did like this:

And irishpipes, you are sooooo right! Take a wonderful song, give it to a celebrity, and it's a disaster! I think the only professional singers whose Christmas songs I like are Twila Paris and B.E. Taylor (both of whom are simply wonderful people - maybe that's the secret!).
Of course, Silver, you are right about the drummer boy. Drummer boys belong in armies of old, and not in a manger!

This is sort-of related, but I have to share. We have an ice cream truck that circles the neighborhood every night, all year long. And every night, without fail, it plays the same 3 Christmas carols. In the middle of summer, fall, whenever, there is always a tinny rendition of "Silent Night" blasting through the neighborhood at 6pm.

the Charlie Brown theme song (I know it's not really a Christmas song, but I always associate it with Christmas).
FYI, the name of the song is "Linus and Lucy's Theme" or with a "the" somewhere... Just in case you see it on a music box or such.

Did you ever see the Christmas episode of The Vicar of Dibley (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108981/) where dim Alice Tinker was leading the village children in singing that carol? They started the "Glorias" and couldn't stop -- they just kept spiraling down and further down. Very funny -- became an inside joke at my house.

This year, we went to 5 concerts put on by 5 different groups our kids are in. I promise you that at every concert, they played "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year". Probably the directors heard that Dr. Carnation would be there so they felt that they had to play it.
Dang, I'm pretty sure they played "Sleigh Ride" at 4 of them.

"Grandma got ran over by a reindeer"
And a very annoying version of "Sleigh Ride" is an honorable mention.
Overall, the secular ones tend to get on my nerves much quicker than the religious ones.
Of the religious ones, I do not particularly care for "O Little Town of Bethlehem". Or "It came upon the midnight clear". But they do not irritate me anywhere near as much as some of the secular ones do.
There was a secular one in Spanish that had absolutely nothing to do with anything Christmas, but for some reason was sung in Christmastime. The lyrics involved "give me your hand dove so that I can come to your nest because I hear you are alone and I have come to keep you company". Of course, they have a very perverted double entendre- that the average 8 year old will NOT be able to grasp. I do not care for this song and I am glad I have not heard it in over 13 years. My brother and I would parody it making an ad for a farm store with its melody.
And another relative disliked another song in Spanish featuring "clouds walking in space". But at least that one had religious elements- although they were not exclusive to Christmas.
So even the more religious countries are NOT exempt from annoying secular Christmas songs.

"Christmas Time is Here" from Charlie Brown. OMG! Why would you let a bunch of kids sound so miserable. I can't even listen to what they are saying. It sounds like the most unhappiest song EVER.
Also, there is one song and I don't know the name because I only hear the bass line, but I'm going to find out what it is and make the booth next to us at work stop playing it. ETA: I heard it today in Dillard's and I'm still not quite certain. It is just some random Christmas-esque words over a bass line and music. Stupid.
I also do not like any Spanish version of any well-known English Christmas song.
If anyone else has a big Latin population, you've probably heard this wonderful remix of a song I think it may be called "Con Mi Burrito" about a child taking his donkey to see the newborn baby Jesus with little kids singing. So cute. Grew up with that one even though it took me forever to understand what they were saying.
ETA: How could I forget Christmas Shoes. A) The song is not very catchy and it doesn't rhyme, not that every song has to, but it'd help. B) What kid would buy shoes for their dying mom? They'd probably buy a pretty necklace, earrings, or bracelet. Maybe a scarf. But SHOES? And C) Why are they in a store alone? Where is the father, auntie, cousin, etc?!
Go and be with your mother, that is the best gift, especially if she's going to pass on. It makes me cringe...

Plus any commercial rendition of "Little Drummer Boy" (even Stevie Wonder's) and "Silent Night". My mom damn near cries when she hears The Temptations' version of "Silent Night", but I always change the station or skip the song on a CD. I appreciate the meaning of the song, but it always feels like the person singing is trying too hard to pull my heartstrings. I'd rather see the artist donate to a worthy cause instead of singing that song.

I LOVE Christmas music (my iPod has 500 Christmas songs on it) but I still cringe when I hear "Mary Did You Know?" I think I found one to top that, though. Our local Christmas station played a song called "Dear Mr. Jesus" where a child sings about seeing child abuse on the news. The big climax of the song comes when the kid sings something like "Dear Mr. Jesus, my mommy hits me, too." I don't know how it's a Christmas song, but it drove me insane.

I freakin' hate most Christmas music. Pretty much the only Christmas music I like is the music from The Nutcracker, which I love. This year I was in Macy's on the last weekend of September and they were putting up posters with models wearing Santa hats, holding ornaments and there was some blurb about Star Rewards Cards. SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!!! I was furious. Call me a Scrooge, but "The Christmas Season" is not and should not be a third of the year. By the end of it, after random people telling me "Merry Christmas" for the 400,000th time, I just start telling them "Happy Chanukah." It just gets so old.

Æ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86)
Æ (lower case: æ) is a grapheme formed from the letters a and e. Originally a ligature representing a Latin diphthong, it has been promoted to the full status of a letter in the alphabets of some languages, including Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic. As a letter of the Old English alphabet, it was called æsc ("ash tree") after the Anglo-Saxon futhorc rune ᚫ (Runic letter ansuz.svg), which it transliterated; its traditional name in English is still ash (IPA: /æʃ/).
And I generally copy and past from the internet or a character map if I need a particular character. I never know the right code for alt+ and it's a pain in the ass on a laptop. (I DO know the codes for the most common french accents but that's left over from high school.)

I am teaching tax classes right now and they are each only 3 hours long, Thank God. The place I work apparently has 5-10 Christmas songs that play in rotation. Different versions, but the same damn songs. I counted on Thursday night and I heard "My Favorite Things" 6 times. IN THREE HOURS.
They are always really repetitive though... the music is chosen by the corporate office, and it's played loud, so that people think we're cool. It's just annoying and makes it hard to hear. Every time I leave work I have to turn off the radio and just have silence for about a half hour to get my mind back. LOL

"[Doorbells and] sleighbells [and schnitzel with noodles]"
"Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes"
"Silver white winters that melt into springs"
Yeah. I know. My guess is the started adding it because they needed more music for the 24/7 Christmas music on the radio.
I have the same issue with "We Need a Little Christmas" as a Christmas song. The whole point of the song is that they needed a little Christmas when it wasn't Christmas yet. And what really cracks me up about it is that the song specifically says it's the week before Thanksgiving.

They played it CONSTANTLY at Bath & Body Works when I worked there for a minute. Oh, it's called "2000 Miles" which is how far away I want to be when this crap comes over the sound system.
Side note, I didn't know "Mary Did You Know" so I looked it up on youtube and yes the comment is true, at 1:26 Jesus is wearing shades. I LOLed.

The version(s) of Sleigh Ride with lyrics. They are unnecessary to the piece...you get the picture without them. However, if there isn't a trumpet horse whinny at the end, you've just wasted three minutes of my life.
Charlotte Symphony is doing Sleigh Ride at our concert this weekend... Terribly excited about that. The rest, not so much. O Holy Night with a girl who sounds like a lounge singer & a drumset backing her up. Bah! Also unintentionally hilarious: Mary's Boy Child. First of all, that should NEVER be a choral arrangement. Second, it should only be sung by someone with excellent jazz/gospel skills. On top of that, Maestro has decided he wants us to CLAP the last page. It must have escaped his attention that we are a choir of 147 whites, 1 Latina, and 2 blacks. We ain't got THAT kind of rhythm.

Every time I hear it, I want to scream! They played it when I was at Starbucks last night. So annoying!

I heard Celine Dion singing Feliz Navidad the other day and my ears started bleeding...it was HORRIBLE. Give me back Jose Feliciano - he's the ONLY person who should ever sing that song.

Why is Joni Mitchell's "River" now a Christmas song? Because it mentions ice skating?

Well he is kind of getting up there. And while I do love Feliz navidad, I tend to get sick of it very quickly during the Christmas season because they play it so damn much during the holiday.

The Christmas Shoes - BLECCH. There's nothing that screams holiday joy more than a song about a dirt-poor family and their mom's impending death.

There are less than 20 words in this entire song. Shakespeare he is not.

Very true. However part of the reason I love the song is it's simplicity, but since it's the only Spanish Christmas song most people know, the radio stations won't stop playing it.

Why is Joni Mitchell's "River" now a Christmas song? Because it mentions ice skating?Think about it...radio stations have long forgotten to play seasonal music post-Christmas Day. This includes songs that mention cold weather, ice skating, snow, sleigh rides, and a wonderful white world of winter WITHOUT the word Christmas in the lyrics.

It's not like she was singing it live...just because he's getting older doesn't mean we need to bring in a French Canadian woman (with a wretched voice, IMO) to jazzy it up and wreck a perfectly good espanol song!
And it's the same few lines over and over and over and over and over and over . . . .
Your point? Just because a song has few words (or even not ANY words) doesn't mean it's a great song.

Yes! This! And the fact that it's catchy, upbeat, and my kids like it and don't make me play something that makes me want to stab my eardrum with a fork.
Can you guys tell I'm serious about my Jose Feliciano??? :p :D

Your point? Just because a song has few words (or even not ANY words) doesn't mean it's a great song.My point is I find it to be a tedious, monotonous and repetative song.
ETA: The occasional composition entitled "Song Without Words" notwithstanding, a song by definition has words, so yeah -- a song without any words isn't really much of a song. :p

I loath The Little Drummer Boy. I think I've said that before on this thread though. And though Mariah Carey's song is good, it's way too overplayed. Enough already.

There's only one good version of The Little Drummer Boy, and that's Bing Crosby and David Bowie's. There don't need to be any others. :-)
And have you heard the Mariah/Bieber version of her song? Bleh.

A few years ago, I showed my kids (who had seen the real David Bowie/Bing Crosby version years ago on TV) the SNL version. They actually fell for it and thought it was the real people until the ending!

Heard that song this morning on my drive to school. Immediately thought I needed to post it here. I don't know if I have heard the "good" version though. I have heard enough "per ump a pum pums" this season and it isn't even December.

The Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah (music major here...hence my hatred). First, its completely inappropriate since its supposed to be performed at Easter. For the 10 years of my life that chorus made me its bitch, we did the HC at every single holiday concert. At this point I have the alto, tenor, and soprano parts memorized. There's a radio station here that plays the entire oratorio on christmas day.
Also, the 12 days of christmas is a horrible song. It's like the song that never ends. Did you know that by the time you finish the song, there's 364 gifts given? Overkill...

And thank you for calling it Messiah instead of The Messiah.
