KICKBALL!!!!! Me and my friends used to go to the local school yard and play, or if our parents wanted us to "Stay where I can see you." We used to play in the street/in the yard. And we had bases all over the place. Man, those were the days!! No bills, no worries!!

Yeah, when I go home to visit my family, I try to bribe the neighborhood into letting me play, but they won't let me. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

My favorite childhood game. . .hmmm. . .Capture the Flag! I'm from WV and I lived right on the Ohio River growing up. There was an island in the river that was (and still is) uninhatited. The boyscouts used to canoe over to the island and camp and play war games and capture the flag. I was a tomboy growing up and loved to play with my brother and his friends, so naturally I wanted to join the boyscouts instead of girlscouts. So I got to do a lot of games and such with the boyscouts because of my brother, but they never let me join.

My favorite childhood memory. . .going fishing with my dad. I was not exactly a child, I was in jr. high, but that is my favorite memory because it was just the two of us and we really had a great time and really bonded. My dad is my hero.

I've never heard of chinese jump rope, but we did play chinese freeze tag.

With Chinese jump rope, you used a continuous stretchy-rope(kinda like a bungee cord without ends). Two people would stand in the rope and stretch it out with their ankles. A third person would then sing "In, out, side by side, on, in, off," while simultaneously doing those moves with the rope.

Does that help?

Kickball, for sure at school! At home...oooh, the huge games of hide and seek, flag football, and ultimate frisbee (thought we didn't call it that at the time), all rolled into one....it was crazy!

Yeah times have truly changed...
Recently I chaperoned my little cousin's birthday party (she turned 8), and it was like 6 little girls. Man, kids are so "grown" these days, they don't play "hide and go seek", they play "Hide and go get "it""!! THis one little girl in particular was so vulgar that I wanted to call her mother sooo bad, so I told my cousin's mother... and she was like that's no need, her mother acts the same way!!

As far as I can remember, when I was 8 yrs old, the only boys that were on my mind were my age, these little ones were swooning over MY friend (whose like 23!!)

What happened????

Anyway, what about skates, and hula-hoops, and M.A.S.H.(anybody remember that game but me?), and double-dutch, and hop-scotch, and RED ROVER, and Tag,
Okay, that's enough.....

Next person....you're "IT"...GO

hop-scotch and, on the playground, that thing that spun around... so you could get good and dizzy if you ran fast enough before jumping onto it... I can't make the name of it come into my head - anyone know? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I love sports, and while kickball is my favorite, I also play a mean game of football. My grandmother (of all people) taught us kids to play (and I don't mean the touch tag kind!) She would knee our mouths into the dirt when we'd try to tackle her or vice versa - In high school she was voted most athletic! It is such a cool thing that my gram is like almost 80 and still more active than me! She still plays with us on Sunday afternoons (and still kicks butt!) I hope she's around to teach my kids to play! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

me again...
I TOTALLY remember the Chinese Jump Rope thing, but I think we called it "Chinese Skip". Oh well, when we did it, it was made from elastic, like what you would put in someone's waistband on a pair of pants, and as you passed the "levels", it would get higher and higher!

THE MEMORIES, THE MEMORIES!!!

Oh man the memories..

Hide and go seek and bike riding was always big in our neighborhood. At school, jump ropes, dodge ball, hop-scotch, chase, red-rover, and alot of those hand games.

My grandparents had this tree that had really low branches out in their yard (They cut it down this past christmas *pout*). Never failed we used to always go climb it when we were little. *dates herself* When my cousins would come over for the holidays we used to pretend we were the shirt tails. And now i'm going to spend the rest of the evening attempting to figure out which one i played!

I don't know about anyone else, but in NYC the girls used to do "cheers" and basically step to songs like "Hollywood goes swinging" and "Ookie Cookie" and "To the Front To the Back". Everyday different teams used to "battle" each other on who would do the best routine.

Does anyone remember that...

Soror Kelli,

Chinese freeze tag was the same as regular freeze tag except to un-freeze your teammate, you had to crawl between their legs instead of just tagging them. I guess we were a little fast for our ages! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif But that was the only way we could get the neighborhood boys to play tag with us!

Diva 56,
We did those chants and one that went who now, who now, now thinks they're bad.

I remember all to well most of the chants. I have two nieces that use most of the same chants these days.
chant: Miss Mary Mack (mack, Mack)
all dresed in black (black, black)
with silver buttons (butons, buttons)
all down her back (back, back)...
As for the toys, my mother kept several of our favorite toys to be able to show our kids what we enjoyed playing with.
Yesterday, I went up in my parent's attic and saw my old Barbie Head-you fixed Barbie's hair and makeup. It was my favorite toy. I would play with it for hours at a time. I also saw my old easy bake oven....now those were the days-no worries....

I used to love playing hopscotch backwards. It's more fun that way.

Didn't anyone ever play that stupid statue maker game, where someone holds your hands and spins you around and then you freeze in position and someone comes in to look at the statues and has to guess what you are?

We used to play the statue game a lot, but it seems like there was some other twist to it. Something about buying the statues or something weird, I dunno.
I used to love playing Kick the Can and Kickball though.

Since I just got back from being a camp counselor I got to hang out all summer playing fun games I'd have to say my fav. is steal the bagel.. (also known as steal the bacon) but we played it with an inntertube (hence why we called it bagel) everyone stands in two lines and is given a number, if your number is called you have to run to the center of a circle where the bagel is and try and "steal" it and bring it back to your side. Very fun when counselors played it got pretty agressive good times.

Yup. I worked for the history and philosophy department in college. My first year we still had a mimeograph machine for the profs who had been there since Abe Lincoln was a kid and they had their tests still mimeo'ed. I used to love to run it and sniff til my frown was a :D, lol. Naw let me stop before folks call 1-800-SNIFF on me.

But I did like the smell and the coolness.

 @ the ink sniffing...did you all graduate and started sniffing white-out? lol

I went to a K-8 school from 4-8 grade, so we still had recess during 6-8 unlike most schools in our area. Recess gets boring in the middle school ages. We liked to sneak in our classrooms while the teacher was gone...to raid her desk. We snatched everything from candy to tampons to cigarettes.
