Partially inspired by this thread's article: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/showthread.php?t=84060

I've always heard never to drink it straight from the can, and definitely to never do so in letters, but is it also verboten to drink out of the bottle?

My parents are both pretty teatotalery, but the big 2-1's coming up and I don't wanna have a deep south party foul. ;)

Drinking beer straight from the bottle is the most direct route to "Bloat City". If you use a glass, the CO2 escapes faster from the beer (a glass has a larger opening) and you won't get as bloated (if at all).

I saw this on a documentary from Stella Artois beer, so I know of what I speak.

You're right that drinking beer from the can is tacky (the only acceptable time to do that is on the river, IMO). Drinking out of the bottle is just as bad. And you never, ever want to be tacky.

I think drinking beer at all is kinda tacky too, but if you're going to drink it, drink out of a pretty cup (without letters). Happy early birthday! Hope it's a great southern fete! :)

Yeah, WTF? Beer drinking etiquette is a oxymoron. You damn silver spoon sorority girls, just turn it up, drink it up, and end it with a satisfying belch.

BTW: I used to hate beer, but some how acquired the taste for it. I don't know how, maybe it's from smelling it all the time at bars or whatever.

Agreed! I've always preferred beer to mixed drinks or straight liquor, and I don't think there is anything tacky about it (although I do agree that drinking from a can is a no-no, find a plastic cup for that shit! :p)

Beer Drinking Etiquette…If you showed up to the party empty handed and have the pleasure of a host that is providing you with free beer do not bitch about their selection.

In my college days, those who drank beer drank it out of a glass -- and sitting down.

I have to say that these days I couldn't give a shit whether someone is drinking from a bottle, can, or glass. Don't worry about it and just have fun. Someone who would be offended by not drinking from a glass is a pretentious ass.

I gotta go with the bloat comment, though.

Too much bloat and the gaseous consequences thereof is always a party foul, even if you don't care about the bottle/can/glass controversy at all! *pinches nose*

I guess I'm just a tacky girl. But then again, I think it would be even more tacky to be at a bar, be given the beer in a bottle, and then ask for a mug.

Reading shit like this makes me want to vomit.

I heart you.

Before I graduated college I hated beer. Now, I like beer but the beer I like doesn't even come in cans. I don't like to unnecessarily dirty glasses so I have no issue drinking from a bottle. :) Course, right now I'm drunk on wine. ;) :p

What if you drill a hole in the base of the can with a key, then crack it open, shotgun the whole thing and smash it against your forehead? Is that tacky? :D

Not sure about your comment as this is the very first time I ever thought about it let alone heard of it.

However, both my parents told me a long time ago something along the lines of: "You an't got no class if you don't drink out of a glass."

My mother was raised in a very conservative household---my grandmother would have made Emily Post proud..haha. Likewise, social graces have been passed down to me. According to what I've been "taught", women should never drink beer from a bottle because it is not feminine. It's tradition in my family to pass down etiquette books from generation-to-generation, so if anyone cares for the full explanation I can easily cite Emily Post and Gloria Vanderbilt.

So what you all are saying is that it looks great to drink Jim Beam or Jack Daniels straight from the bottle? It's that it's beer that makes it a problem?

I'm kidding; drinking straight from the bottle or can looks silly if especially if you are dressed up. I'm not sure that it's what's in the can or bottle that determines the "class" though. Glasses are probably the way to go. Solo cups don't scream class to me anymore than a beer can.

Many of us here would offer glasses or cups if we were the host or hostess,

Here's a question for you, though:

If you are a guest, would you ask for one if cups or glasses weren't already provided?

See, to me, having good manners is more than just "I know the rule." It's about acting in a manner most likely to put people at ease, which generally following the rules does.

When you do stuff that calls other people out on not knowing or following the rule, is that really good manners?

I"m guessing that you're older than your 30s. If not, maybe you're friends with Brooke from Real World Denver.

I enjoy it when my friends drink out of their 40s in paper bags while sitting on the porch. That was the best summer ever.

I think you should just follow the environment you are in.... there are some places you would be out of place by drinking out of the bottle, by all mean pour it in a glass. And there are some places you are better off drinking out of a bottle. I know I have been in a few bars that I would drink whatever is in a bottle just to prevent me from having to put my mouth on the glassware!

Very true. If you're at a shot and beer bar or a casual backyard BBQ, drink it out of the bottle. If you're at an upscale restaurant or martini bar or something, it would be classier to drink it out of a glass.

There used to be (and may still be) people who think women should only smoke when sitting down and all sort of other ridiculous stuff.

There's a lot more important things in life to worry about. And there are lot of other flagrant issues of rudeness that should be dealt with, lol.

Holy shit. No really. Holy shit. I think that calling people tacky for drinking something they enjoy is tacky, but hey, have at it.

I drink beer however the hell I feel like drinking it -- sometimes out of the bottle and sometimes out of a glass and sometimes out of the can (although the only canned beer I really drink is Gordon, which belongs in a glass because it is magnificent). And I don't give a shit what anybody thinks of it.

A lot of upscale restaurants don't even give you the option, they bring you the bottle & a glass when you order a beer.

Hey now, some of us like beer! And its not like I'd order a bud, give me some credit! ;)

I'm an absolute beer snob, if you think drinking beer isn't classy then its because you think beer ends at miller lite & keg stands.

Okay, I didn't mean that drinking beer is tacky, per se. All I can think of when I think of girls drinking beer though is those women who go to the liquor store without a bra and with 10 screaming kids going "Give me a case of beer...can I buy that with food stamps?" I've drank beer before; I don't particularly like it, but my comment about drinking it being tacky may have been out of line. I still think, and was raised in the environment to think, that drinking ANY drink out of the bottle is tacky and just not ladylike at all. That's not saying I don't like the people who do it or wouldn't talk to them or look down on them...but I just personally wouldn't do it.

On a greek note, we're not allowed to drink out of bottles on my campus. At all. We HAVE to put it in a cup.

Oh my lawd jeebus, just when I thought it couldn't get any better (or worse). So you won't do vending machines if you're really thristy? How about bottled water? What about kool-aide koolbursts? If there's only a sip of soda left in a 2-liter, do you just turn it up, or do you get a glass for that too?

Sorry, I thought everyone would understand that I was talking about alcohol. I can't drink liquor out of a bottle or can.

Personally, though, I would rather drink out of a glass. But that's a personal preference, not a rule.

Ok, it was the last sentence that threw me off because we had that no drinking from the bottle and cans rule in elementary school. I thought your post had extended to sodas. It's odd that your campus doesn't trust college students with bottles, regardless if it's soda or alcohol.

It's cool. And I'm not sure whether or not it's a campus rule, but Phi Mus at my school aren't supposed to drink alcohol out of bottles or cans. I see boys in fraternities doing it, but never see girls in sororities doing it, so I assume the other sorority here has the same rule, whether or not the school does.

Haha, I always seem to get stuck behind a smoker walking to class. I wish more people would sit down with that...then there'd be a nice cloud of smoke to avoid instead of a moving cloud in front of me on my way to class. :(

Drinking beer from a can IS tacky. Mainly, because BEER THAT COMES IN A CAN TASTES LIKE SHIT. Winnie's right, it depends where you are. I don't think you should feel like you have to order wine or a mixed drink if what you really want is beer, though - that just wastes money, either yours or whoever's buying it for you.

Just as a note to the sorority girls who must poor their beer into a glass: it makes it a heck of a lot easier for someone to slip a roofie or something else into it, not to mention one of my friends got hepatitis once from drinking out a glass at a bar (if she'd left it in the bottle she'd have been fine). So good luck with that. :)

That's one of the main reasons why I drink beer out of the bottle. I've taken 2 friends to the hospital after they got their drinks 86'ed. I'd rather be safe and "tacky" than "classy" and drugged.

I believe it depends on the context. I mean, at a bar with my friends, I would never pour beer from a bottle into a glass. At a business dinner or wedding, however, I would never drink straight from the bottle.

Neither: For most GLOs, it's a myth, unless you have chapter bylaws that spesifically state it.

And yes, for those who do, it's ususally to keep people from acting like idiots in letters (although it doesn't stop those who do so sober anyway).

Maybe b/c I was born, raised, went to college, and still live in the Midwest I've never, ever had a problem with drinking beer from a can OR a bottle. I like it from a bottle better b/c IMO it tastes better.

The only excuse for having your beer in a cup is if you got it from a keg. Seriously.

So I guess that makes me tacky  .

We had a drive through liquor school in the town where my school was. It was great. Although, not as great as calling 524-beer and having it delivered to you.

Also, I pretty much live on dollar drafts. But I guess that's ok, since it comes in a glass. But I have absolutely no problem drinking from a bottle or can.

if its draft beer or coming out of a keg (and i'm not being held upside down over top of it) then fine i'll drink out of a glass

other than that - drink it from the bottle and stop wasting the water and soap that it takes to wash an extra glass so you can look cute.

imho - anytime you're doing something solely to "look classy" you usually just end up looking like an ass

You rock for this.

At home I drink beer (mostly) in a glass. Well trained by my dad...I'm great at pouring it too!
I have absolutely no issue with any beer delivery system, just people who tell me they think it's tacky. What's tacky is people drinking shit like Bud or Coors. If you're going to drink beer it may as well not taste like it came out one end of a cat.

Yep. But anymore, the kind of beer I prefer is either draft microbrews (which means a glass) or specialty beers, which I prefer to drink from a glass.

The last time I had beer from a can was Halloween when we played beer pong, and that probably doesn't count because we poured it into the cups to play.
