View Full Version : Ok, what exactly is a "poser"?

I never heard anyone use the word in real life. I have an idea what it means...that you're being something that you're not. Example: wearing clothes that "skaters" wear, but you're really not a skater yourself. Am I on the right track?

Yeah thats the gist of it. Similarly, i think of a "poser" as a middle-class (typically white) kid who wore grungy or faux-vintage clothes and claimed they were all about the struggle because they couldnt afford books for next semester.

Yeah, I've always seen it as pretending you're really into something (sport, music, etc) but you don't actually do it, you just dress the part.

So . . . you take an exorbitantly easy-to-understand term, define it correctly, play dumb as to the meaning, then MAKE A THREAD INSTEAD OF JUST LOOKING IT UP?

Nice thread, kid.

it referres to someone who is trying to appear to be something they are not in order impress others and move up socially. This definition is important because "being/dressing like some one you aren't" could also include acting and halloween.
Also, Poseur.

I'd rather trust the people here on GC than some 15 year old emo kids on urban dictionary or a dry definition from a real dictionary. Take that as a compliment. Plus, I can't talk to dictionaries or websites, and this thread was started somewhat for the sake of conversation (as most of my threads are).

Anyone who uses the term in the above mentioned ways should be quickly disposed of. Even worse than the people who use the terms are the "posers" themselves. Being a bum or a thug or a skateboard punk is bad enough, why would anyone who isn't one of those things try to appear as such?

A middle-aged woman who keeps "files" on people from the internet! I'm sure "To Catch a Predator" would be interested in her.
