If you have friends or school mates that are interested in starting a sorority/women's group in your area, you can look in the Locals forum for advice. That's a good place to look for posts on how others started their own sororities.

There are also several threads about non-collegiate sororities. You can check those out by using the search function.

Good luck!

Beta Sigma Phi (http://www.betasigmaphi.org)claims to have chapters in 32 countries. Even if they don't specifically have one in Croatia it still should be helpful experience if you wanted to start a chapter of their organization.

Sounds like you don't want a sorority.

You just want to build a dormitory (living quarters) for women. Building a house does not = creating a sorority.

There's a difference. You might want to do a little more research.

Ok, this is going to require a lot of English reading but here goes:
This website -> NPC Members (http://www.npcwomen.org/about/an_members.php) lists 26 sororities.
I recommend going to their websites and reading about their values. Different sororities value different things. Also, different sororities have different community service projects.

Find several that interest you and contact them about your interest in starting a sorority chapter in your country. I HIGHLY recommend having someone fluent in English write this letter or at least double check your English. Someone from these offices will be able to tell if they are interested in opening a chapter there.

What you want to do is not easy. If this does not work out, I would recommend donating your money to create a scholarship fund for women. This way you can contribute to their life experience by sending them to university.

/might as well treat this as serious, though it's a bit odd

This may sound like a really dumb question, but besides Canada, are there any countries out there that has NPC sorority chapters out there? Just curious :)

Tri Sigma used to have a chapter in Mannheim, Germany. If I'm not mistaken, the campus (affiliated with the University of Maryland) has since closed.

Those who know more info, feel free to correct me. Other than Tri Sigma I don't think there were any other NPC collegiate chapters outside the US and Canada. I'm sure that there are international alumnae chapters/clubs, though.

Maybe I'm overly pessimistic/cynical, but who wants to bet that "Zara" is really Zachary and wants to build and "sponsor" a "sorority house" for some kind of webcam website?

Good question, I know there are alumna chapters in Europe but beyond that no clue.

It just seemed like the only real direction to point "Zara" in if she's really interested in doing something like that.

Uh, who said we were prejudiced?
If you were really serious about this then you would have already understood that a sorority house does not create a sorority...sisterhood and bonding do. Sure, there are some added perks by living in a sorority house, but there are even more perks when you start to form friendships and bonds with your fellow sisters.

What problem, precisely?
I do recognize that sororities have stereotypes...which are no doubt projected on television or online.
I will admit, I am NOT in a sorority (but am thinking of rushing next semester). But I have been doing research on the subject, a considerable lot, and would be glad to offer my help, if you wished, though I'm no particular expert.

well, my dear, let me say this, it's not just money that you need, but enough women who are interested enough to do it.

The concept of a sorority is fairly new to international people besides US and canada, so I highly doubt the stereotype will follow through. What you want to do is to introduce it to your friends and see if they would like to join one. if you are still in school, talk to your student activity council to see what are the procedures.

I personally don't know anything about NPC sororities chartering a chapter overseas, but as others point out, you may want to contact a sorority after you have enough people.

Though, this is just my opinion, that you might be better off starting your own. The question is, does risk management prevent having oversea collegiate chapters and how hard the process is? I know for other sororities in order to start a chapter, your charter sisters and the HQ have to travel back and forth to regulate the process. So distance could matter...

I think that cost and distance would play the biggest role in this. Followed by possible language barriers.

Fun Thread
Do you want to build a house?
Do you want to start a sorority?
Do you want to colonize a sorority?
Do you want to create a sorority?
Do you want to learn about sororities?
Do you want to learn about sisterhood/philanthropy/recruitment/etc?

I would love to hear how this turns out in a couple of years.

I think the post should be posted on 4/1/2007.
