View Full Version : Which I-Pod

Time for a new I-pod, and I would appreciate your opinions.

It's between a Nano and a Video.

I like the Nano because it's smaller, and you can get an arm strap for it to jog with. BUT.. I like the Video because it would be fun to store photos in it. (Doubt I'd use it much for video.)

Which one should I get?

Anyone have the video and can offer some opinions on how you like it?

Also.. which accessories do you have and recommend? I already have an InMotion mobile speaker system with docking station.

I have the 30Gb video and I love it. I put my entire playlist on there and it barely made a dent in the memory. I can pretty much put whatever I want on it and not worry about having enough memory. With a nano, you're more likely to reach your limit quicker, meaning you'll have to delete songs. Also, I'm pretty sure they sell armbands for video ipods if you wanna jog.

I don't think there's much point in a Nano unless you get a small 1GB one...after that the price difference between a 4GB and 30GB video aren't that huge, so you're getting a lot more for the price of a video than the price of a 4GB Nano.

i agree. i rather pay like $50 more and get about 26 more gigs. but that's just me :D

Everyone I know who has a Nano has run out of space. The Nano costs more per song, if you wanna get cost-conscious about it. I have a 30G video that is a little more than halfway filled--and I use it as a back-up HD for my Mac. There are armbands for the Video models.

I got my nano as a gift last Christmas. Love the small size. I'm not sure I'd want a regular ipod as they feel too bulky & awkward to me. I wonder too about the battery life on the video too.

I have the Hi-Fi stereo...amazing!

Thank you so much! This has been very helpful info.

It looks like I'll be ordering the video model! There's a 30 and a 60GB version. I don't mind spending the extra money if you think 60 is necessary??? Or am I paying an extra hundred bucks for something I won't really need?

MacMall has a deal right now for free FM transmitter, case, and engraving (after rebates).

Hi Blueangel! Joel Osteen here! I recommend the 30gb video IPOD. I bought my little daughter the nano last year, but it quickly filled up to capacity when she put all of our church music in there. Good luck and don't buy the black one!

Hi Blueangel! Joel Osteen here! (I do love your screenname by the way) I will most definitely tell Victoria that you said hi. She is saying her prayers right now before bed. I'm just finishing up Sunday's sermon. Be sure to tune into your local Bible station to catch the worship service on TV! And remember to buy my book!

How many songs do you have and how many photos are you planning on keeping there? I have over 400 songs on mine, and like I said, it's barely made a dent in the memory. If you're not planning on putting videos on it, I really don't see why you would need 60GB's, unless you were planning on dowloading every song ever recorded to it.

I use my 60GB iPod as a back up hard drive for my most important files. I also keep my whole playlist on it, with some of the latest tv shows that I've missed.

FYI, you can store photos on a nano as well.

Also, I have an assload of music - probably a Richard Gere assload. Just tons, and I don't hide it well. I use a nano, because the portability makes up for having to reload it when I want to. The nano still holds over 3 days of music, and I carry it in a wallet w/ my ID and cards so I can listen to it at lunch, never forget it at the gym, etc. It really depends on how often you'll have it docked/will want to reload it, or whether you'd rather have your entire collection in one place.

There are definite positives to both, but both can handle photos equally well.

video ipods are the best -- you can download shows and hook it up to your tv and watch it -- I bought the whole first season to Lost and did this...it was great!

Thanks everyone for your input. Now that I've decided on the Video 30gb, what accessories do you recommend. I did see that there is a "sport-wrap" (I'm assuming it's an armband) for the video ipod.

Anything else???

that's probably the best way to measure assloads - you know, small, medium, large and Richard Gere.

anyway, i have 30GB, about 1300 songs, 8 videos, and @ 40 pics - i've got i THINK 23GB left?

i think the jump from 4 to 30 is assinine (Richard Gere assinine that is), esp cost wise. the shuffle will be discontinued (and really, never shouldve been created), and the nano just like the mini (which i liked and wouldve gotten if i had the $ then).

now why were the mini iPods the only ones to come in different colors?

p.s. saw this old dude with a first-gen iPod - couldnt tell his ish.

The Bose sound dock is very expensive, but really worth it. My boyfriend has one and the sound quality is just amazing. Plus it has a remote so you can skip tracks. He bought me an iTower from Sharper Image for Christmas, and honestly, it kinda sucks (although I'll never tell him that!).

also: if you want to play your iPod in your car and have a cassette player - get the cassette attachment instead of an FM transmitter, which are all pretty crappy, especially if you live in a bigger town (I used mine in Miami and Fort Lauderdale) - the interference from other radio stations is terrible. I wish my car had a cassette player for this reason alone!

I have the 30G Video iPod and I *strongly* recomment the cassette adapter for your car. DC radio is pretty bad, so I almost always just listen to my iPod while I'm driving. If you get that, I also recommend getting a car charger.

I have the arm band for when I go to the gym, but I don't use it too much. If I'm on the treadmill, it's just as easy to put my iPod in the little space on the console. If I'm weight training (specifically on my upper body), I find the arm band to be a nuisance.

The Nike + is only for the Nano. The Apple Store should have some decent armbands for the video models.

I got an iSkin for my video iPod. It's pretty good, but it wasn't very cheap.

The Bose Sound Dock is my next gift to myself! :D

Please, Munch, please please please do NOT get the Bose dock - you're paying way too much for what you actually get. Bose sound quality is incredibly overrated - peep out some 'audiophile' sites for actual testing/rating information, but you can get comparable quality in an iPod dock for less money, or some incredibly sick stuff for the same price.

I just got a 2GB iPod Nano for my birthday. It has just under 400 songs on it right now, and it says it hold about 500. I was thinking about this the other day, but do I really need 60GB? I don't want video on it, I won't ever listen to 6000 songs. For me, it's just something to keep me occupied to and from work.

What's so bad about the black ones (other than the nasty finger prints all over them - yes I have a black one)?

Your itunes should be set up to work with your current ipod. If you plug a new one in, it will open up a window asking if you want it to become the default computer for that ipod. If you click on yes, it should transfer your library over to that.

Okay also, I got an iHome, right? So you put your iPod in there and it's an alarm clock that plays your iPod. Cool, right? The thing is, it's kind of freaky, because I hit the snooze button a million times in the morning -- that means every ten minutes, I hear another snippet of the same song. Do you have any idea how much that messes you up for the rest of the day? Yesterday I was all GIRL YOU WANNA COME TO MY HO-TEL BABY I WILL LEAVE YOU MY ROOM KEY I'M FEELIN THE WAY YOU CARRY YOURSELF GIRL AND I WANNA GET WIT YOU CUZ YOU'S A CUTIE. I was an Ipod virgin until this Christmas as well. My SO got me the new Ipod shuffle. It's the perfect size for me. I'm training for an Ironman, which means I spend a lot of time riding my bike on the trainer in the winter, and running outside. I also have this weird thing where I CANNOT listen to music in order. It drives me bonkers. I have to listen to everything on shuffle. I don't really do the transportable media, I'm usually a reader, not a watcher. Once I heard that I could put podcasts on there, I was even happier (I subscribe to a triathlon podcast and the Shamrock and Thistle podcast from NPR). Plus you can turn off the "shuffle" function if you want to listen to it in order, and you can load it in order from Itunes. I like the simple buttons too...the screen would distract me if I was running.

Other cool thing was that sweetie had it engraved with part of my favorite psalm ("Create in me a pure heart...")

I'm the same way with listening to things on suffle. Back in the day, when I used a walkman with a running tape I made (CD players skip way too much for running, and they are too big) it was the WORST. I knew all the songs, and aproximately how long into the run I was. Then I would realize if my pace was really off, or if I had a hour run to do that I was only in 25min (I was a mid distance runner, I hated long runs).

I have the older version of the suffle and I still love it. But I'm looking at a nano for my car, since the FM transmitter thing is crap. Fords coming out with some new ipod attachement (that would have been included if i bought a more expensive car) that I'm looking to have installed soon.

Me too, until this xmas my bf got me 2G nano :)

BUT, the problem is, before he gave it to me, he d/l songs to this Ipod for me to listen. I got back home to transfer songs but I couldn't use Itunes because I'm still using a freakin Windows ME, lol. So I found this Itune window converted that can be used on ME, and I think it screwed up my settings because it won't recognize my Ipod. I took it back work to transfer since it has itunes, but it askes me to restore it. So I did, but it kept on asking me to restore it like thousand times. I took it back to my bf and he was able to transfer songs to it. Then I tried it at my work comp and it still ask me to restore

Now I'm confused...does it mean my ipod would only respond to my bf's comp?

That's funny about the shuffle.. me too! I always thought I would never use the shuffle option, but that's all I use now. I like when each album is mixed up and you never know what's coming next.

I'm absolutely addicted to my ipod. I use it at work, and I've found I write better when listening to music.

I've just discovered the free podcast downloads. I'm learning Spanish.

A few days ago, I read this entire thread. Didn't know I'd be needing help later!

I purchased my daughter the cute pink iPod nano for Christmas (4G). I loaded about 24 songs on there for ME but noticed that I only had about 1.97G left. So I finally got around to calling the Apple folks and I reset it. Seems like for some reason, the memory was wacky! So I took it back yesterday and got a refund. I will probably go ahead and get the 30G video iPod since as many of you have noted, you're getting about 7 times as much for $50 more.

What I wanted to know is has anyone else had a problem with the memory on their iPods? The Circuit City guy told me yesterday that he's seen one or two cases of this happening and it was with the pink iPod (don't know why he thinks the color had anything to do with it, but oh well). Next question - are there free areas for podcasts, etc.? As are a few of you, I'm an iPod virgin as well.

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know if the Nike+ attachment will work with an old school mini? Mine's about 3 years old, and I wanted to upgrade to a video iPod, but I heard the Nike+ only works with the Nano. Didn't know if it applied to the mini, too. Does anyone use Nike+? Would it be worth it for me to buy a Nano instead of the video so I can use it? The same thing happened with my iPod mini. I did extensive searching on the internet and I found a bunch of stuff about how the new upgrade to iTunes could cause that problem, so I figured mine was toast...until I dropped it, and suddenly my computer recognized it again. I don't know what was up, but you probably shouldn't try that "fix" for yours...unless you're brave.

It only works with the nano and supposedly only with certian nike running shoes. I've never used it, but I know a few people who hate it.

Why do you want it? To keep you on pace, for heart rate, or milage? I would suggest getting a good watch instead. But thats just me.

And becareful about getting too relied on music. Most races don't allow headphones on the course. Many officals choose to ignore that rule, but especially if you in the top of the runners, they might get picky. And please please please tell me... you aren't going to be running in the street with headphones on, are you? It would make me :( I've seen runners get hurt that way.

My friend has been running for years and she got the Nike+ attachment for Christmas and loves it. She doesn't have the shoes though - she just cut off the finger of an old knit glove and put the chip in there. She sewed up the top and put it underneath her insole.

Yeah, I have a video iPod and I wish I could use the Nike + system for mine. I've heard all really good reviews. The video iPod is far, far too bulky to run with (I swear it's slowed me down!) and I'd like to have something to listen to while I train (indoor track).

I mainly want it because I'm getting back into running after a few years of injuries and I've heard it was the easiest way to keep on pace. I typically run trails in a nearby park, so I'm not in the streets.

I'm thinking about getting one of the refurbished 4g Nanos. If I get that, an armband, and the Nike+, it costs about $10-15 more than the new 4g Nano. I might go check out the local running shop to see what they have to say about it, too. I'm sure someone there has used it.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone :)
