Hi girls! I have a question for all of you! Since I am relatively new to this organization, I was wondering if there was any type of traditions that take place when a sister gets married. I was at a wedding recently where the bride and groom were both members of greek houses and their sisters/brothers sang them a wedding song from the house. Does Sigma Alpha in general or any of your chapters have anything special they do? Please let me know!

Hello! There's no National ceremony or specific song, to the best of my knowledge. However, I know several chapters have developed special traditions in this regard and look forward to hearing more about them!

Also along these lines, any special things you do (that are not secret) when sisters get engaged?

IL Sis - if you get any by e-mail, would you mind sending a copy my way so we have them for potential sharing w/all chapters? Thanks!

When I got married, I used part of the book of Ruth in my ceremony. My minister listed is as one of the options for the ceremony. Most ministers have have a ceremony that contains that portion. You might check and see. If not, I still have a copy of mine somewhere that I can send you if you want it.
Good luck!

Sounds like we need some musical sisters to write a song for this purpose! Any volunteers?

Hi, my name is Tanya Franke and I am a member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter. There are several members of our chapter getting married, and if any of you have songs or wedding ritual ideas as far as Sigma Alpha goes, I would love to hear them. Julie (Speight), if you could, please send me a copy of your quotes from Ruth.

Thank you,
Tanya http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Please send me anything you hear also! ( tmyonah@yahoo.com ) I am getting married in less than a year (woo hooo... counting the days...that's.. uhh... 344? LOL!), and I know we have several other engaged girls in our group, too. Sorry Beth... not in the least musical! Unless you go for the "do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro..." sort of song! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Ladies: Just found this posting on the Greek Life board. Thought this lady had an interesting idea, to do something to distinguish the sisters who attended her wedding. - Beth

2) My happiest moment, however, was seeing half of my chapter sisters at my wedding, even though the wedding was out of town! I knew they were coming, and had ordered corsages for them to wear. But it was so great to come to my reception and join our circle to sing together! There were so many people who were teary eyed about it, even though they aren't greek. Several people came up to me afterward and said they wished they had joined a greek organization because they saw how much love we have for each other! Even watching it on the video still makes me cry!

Sorry about the blank section!

Anyhow, I was wondering what song you and your sisters sang together. I haven't really come up with anything special so if you have any ideas, let me know! Thanks bunches!!!

Hi ILSis (and everyone else!):

That was actually a posting from someone in another sorority but I thought it was a great idea! (If you want to see the post, I think it's under either "a nice story" or "your favorite Greek memory" on the Greek Life general forum.) My guess/assumption was that they sang one of their standard songs.

I've been thinking about this - would the Circle Song work? At least everyone knows it! :-)

This isn't about weddings specifically, but engagements. (From Beta Chapter)

We don't really have anything we do at the wedding. (At least nothing I have seen) But when a sister gets engaged, she tells the president and we pass the candle after chapter and sing the circle song. Then the newly engaged gets to blow it out and then show off her ring to the whole chapter. It's a lot of fun.

Hi IL Sis:

Saw your posting on the other board, been trying to come up with something! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

This might be a crazy idea, but what about starting a tradition of something like a gift basket in SA colors (or plain but tied with ribbons in the colors), presented to the couple from the chapter? It could include things like a SA Christmas ornament for their tree, recipes from members, candles, etc. Just an idea!

IL Sis,

Just wondered what you decided to do (if anything)? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Well, we haven't really come up with anything as of yet. We are thinking about writing a poem that we can recite together, but with school just starting we haven't gotten together to write it. If you have any ideas, keep them coming!!!

Sorry about the delay in response to the scripture I referred to earlier in this topic. It is Ruth 1:16-17. Many of my Sisters have used this in their weddings as well.
Best Wishes.

Good news girls! We have a poem written! Tonight we are going to present it to the entire chapter and see what they think and as soon as we get all the bugs out we will pass it on!

I just thought I would bump this topic back up to the top since it's time for all of those gorgeous summer weddings. Anybody have sisters getting married this summer? My big sis (our president) is getting married a week from tomorrow. It's basically going to be a huge Sigma Alpha and AGR reunion (fiance' is an AGR alum). Then another sis is getting married in the middle of August. I just wanted to congratulate any of my Sigma Alpha sisters who might be getting married this summer or in the near future. May your married life be filled with many many wonderful memories!!!!

Allison

My senior year one of the girls requested the first candle pass in my time as a sister, which I had noticed her ring that morning as we were getting ready for class in the bathroom... it's just one of those things that you don't miss! But it was nice for her to tell everyone at once... and the fact that Gamma doesn't use the circle song made it tough so we just sang out favorite, It Only Takes a Spark *lol*
