Yeah...how does that work exactly? The cocktail napkin sketch they had up for April Fool's was pretty funny, but I don't think that really explains it.

PM me with an email address and a name (can be phony, doesn't matter), and I'll send you an invitation to join gmail. I have 50 of 'em, so if anyone wants an invite, I'd be most happy to oblige.

Thanks guys, but I already have gmail. I was just wondering how they're able to claim "2195.009204 megabytes (and counting) of free storage"

Because they allow you that amount of space before they tell you that your box is full.

It is pretty cool though. It's keeping up with me pretty well. It seems to grow about as fast as I can fill it up.

Haha - we seem to be miscommunicating here. :) What I wonder is HOW are they able to continuously add storage space. Is that ticker that's running on the Gmail front page really accurate? How does the space just keep growing like that? I guess I'm wondering about it from a technical standpoint.

While I don't know, the answer seems pretty obvious. It would stand to reason that Google just allows the number to increase at a rate that they feel that they can continue to serve their members/clients' needs. The invite only method of adding new users keeps them in control when it comes to the rate at which new accounts are added.
