Hello
Yesterday, I read in the Pick Your Favorite about the Kelly Price remake of Shirley Murdock's "As We Lay". I like both the original and the remake. . . . however there are some remakes that have made me sick to my stomach. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

Here are my Top Four Ugly's
1. Gladys Knight and Friends remake of Karyn White's "Superwoman" (UGH) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

2. Gladys Knight's remake of Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" (YUCK)

3. Some new group who remade "Sweet November" by The Deele. I believe Troop remade it but correct me if I am wrong.

4. Luther's CD of Remakes (WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS HE THINKING??) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

So I want to know what you hated to see remade and who should never remake songs. You will notice that I left Mary J. BLige out of this. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Hey Soror CrimsonTide4!

I just had to put my $19.13 into this topic.

It's actually quit funny because before I saw Mary J Blige's name, she AUTOMATICALLY came to mind. I think she should have been arrested and given jail time for destroying the beauty of many great classics. Unfortunately I can't think of any others off hand. And its probably better that I don't!!!

In so far as what you have listed, I agree 1913%

Much DeltaLuv!

Who should NEVER be allowed to do remakes:

Mary J. Blige
Lionel Richie
Diana Ross
LaToya Jackson
Gladys Knight
Brittany Spears
Dionne Warwick
Spice Girls

Instead of naming an individual I'll just name a genre of people who should NEVER do remakes and those are RAPPERS!!!

I had forgot all about rappers and their sampling. That was a good one.

I remember on Comicview when a comedian said that singers must go through an application process to do remakes. He set it up where Mary and KEith Sweat called in and Keith Sweat wanted to remake, "Let's Get It On."

What are songs that you never want to have remade?

Does anyone remember how maybe 2 years ago, Blackstreet remade a GUY slow song. That just seemed @$$ backwards to me but anywho. . .

His name is Teddy Riley. He seems to be in a new group every two or three years....

LOL! Sterling- first it was wrecks-n-effect (i still love rumpshaker), then blackstreet, what next?

On the remake issue. I was watching the old school videos and I'm sorry, I love Tina Turner, but to me no one can sing "Let's Stay Together" like Al Green.
Also, I've noticed that a lot of songs are remade into country songs very quickly (i.e. Brandy's "almost doesn't count" or is it vice versa?

First: NO ONE should be legally allowed to TOUCH Prince's songs, be it Tevin (waaack), Sinead (wiggety wack), or TLC (w- well you know)!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Second: PUFFY, shut UP!! Stop Stealing! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif And he steals such baad 80's songs, too.

Third: Michael Bolton needs to PRAY that Heaven is segregated, because if it's integrated, many African-American stars and lyricists will be waiting... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

ROFL

Finally, Teddy is back with Guy, so he has come full circle. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Now you know my music loving behind could not sit back and be quiet on this one!!! Okay, I feel Mary J., but I was mad when she sampled "Speak to my Heart" on her second cd. I'm talking about her song "Don't Go"(?). First of all, the background music is to the tune of "Goodbye Love" by Guy, but at the end she takes one of my favorite gospel sings and flips the script!!! I was hurt http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif But the worst remake I have ever heard was the reggae version of "Sexual Healing". I'm cringing just thinking about it...

Or how about when they speed the song up from a slow ballad to a fast song. For example, if they speed up one more Lauryn Hill or Whitney Houston song I'm gonna scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am soooooo sick of Deborah Cox's slow songs becoming a "dance mix" as well as Whitney Houston and I think they did for Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton.

What did you all think of the song by Silk last summer and their slow song, "If You"?? It kind of had the Prince flavor to it.

The only "techno" remake of a slow jam I ever liked was Brian McKnight's own remake of "anytime."

Truly, the peopleonthe list shouldn't make remakes, but what's wrong with Lionel Richie?
Do you like 112&Allure remake of Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam song"All Cried Out?"

Girl, you didn't like the Ribbon in the Sky remake? I loved it! The main reason I liked it is because they didn't do like everybody else and try to match the original artist note for note. They actually rearranged it! There's a concept. But for real, I am a little sensitive on Stevie. Has anyone else heard the remake of 'All I Do'? I'd like to wring that girl's neck. As far as Mary J., c'mon, admit it. She can't sing. Nothing wrong with that. She's still okay with me. What'd Whitney say....it's not RIGHT, but it's OKAY. True that, but she knows she was DEAD WRONG for that Sweet Thang remake. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Now Kelly Price, she was right on with that Shirley Murdoch song. I am loving it! When the original came out, my parents wouldn't let us sing it, so you KNOW I'm all in it now that I'm grown. You don NOT wanna be in earshot when that song comes on in my house. Lol. You guys take care.

Cherish, I absolutely love 112 and Allure's remake of all cried out. The remake is nearly two year old and I still sing it in the car on the way to work everyday (not a pretty sight to other drivers) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif As a matter of fact I would buy that whole CD for that 1 song.

As far as other remakes I think it should be totally ILLEGAL to ever remake anything by:

The Temptations
Marvin Gaye
Earth, Wind and Fire
Isley Bros
Prince
The Carpenters
The Commodores

And all this is coming from a 19 year old. I think I just have an old soul.

Love,
Me

I LOVEDEDED Intro's Ribbon in The Sky remake!!! It was beautiful. I want that song at my wedding.

I love Intro, their only FAUX PAS was when they made COME INSIDE and at the end had some PILLOW TALK, the worst part was WATCH YOUR TEETH NOW!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

I still love AS WE LAY both Shirley's and Kelly's.

What about K-Ci and JoJo's remake of "LOVE BALLAD" or K'Ci's remake of "IF YOU THINK YOU'RE LONELY NOW"??

okay, I can hold my fingers no longer.

I cannot stand Intro, especially after I worked for them when they dropped their one hit.

I loved "Ribbon In the Sky" and "So What" before that night. I worked tech on their concert in Atlanta. Bruce Bruce was the MC, and he actually protected me from one of them. This one fool (a roadie) kept making passes and could not take no for an answer, so Bruce let me chill in his dressing room. He was very nice.

But the short one threw a mike at the sound man vacktage because it shorted. He apologized after another song, but we were already pissed.

I was really through when the lead broke into "Come Inside." Remember that "pillow talk" part? He tried to replicate it by having an audience member "undress him" fter she stopped at the buckle, he started the pillow talk and cupped her head to mimic fellatio. You could tell she wasn't willing because you could see her fighting against his hand. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

I'm still mad at Intro for messing with Stevie's "Ribbon in the Sky." That's my all-time favorite love song, but only when Mr. Wonder is singing it.

First of all, Kelly Price should NOT have remade "As we Lay." It is not tight. I really liked Intro's "Ribbon in the Sky," but no one can sing it like Stevie! Did y'all know that the Coolio song from the movie Dangerous Minds-"Gangster Paradise," was a Stevie original? I guess you can say I am a HUGE Stevie fan! Mary J. Blige, K-Ci and Jo-JO cannot sing and should be banned from music. All Mary do is holla through songs! Don't any get mad, I am just telling the truth!

Another person who should be arrested for doing remixes: Mariah Carey

For months it bugged me whenever I heard "I Still Believe." Cause I couldn't remember who sang it orginally (Brenda K. Starr) The orginally sounds soooooooooooo much better.

And don't even get me started on Ms Carey's remake of "The Beautiful Ones" by Prince http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Heeey. *covering my ears* I don't wanna hear another ill word about Mariah. She might look like a two dollar hussie *s*, but the girl can SING! I loved the remix of "The Beautiful Ones". But then again, I never cared too much for Prince anyhow.

prospective rushee,

I hear you on Mariah just ruining a perfectly good Prince song! When I heard her version, I started laughing, then I had to just give that tape away. Now she did gain a little ground when she sampled Snoop's "It ain't no fun..." noticed I am talking about the beat, not her lyrics. I can hardly understand what she says half the time. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif
Some songs should be labeled do not copy or sample EVER!!

I love Alicia Keys remake of "How Come you Don't Call Me Anymore." :D

Mariah Carey really messed up Phil Collins's "Against All Odds." She sounded her worst on that song.

I hated Gerald Levert's remake of "I Believe I Can Fly."

Michael Bolton really needs to stop trying to remake Classic soul songs. He F**ked up "Sexual Healing."

I'm just sick of Mariah, using samples of everyone else's music. If she is such a songstress she should be able to create her own music and not take anyone else's beat. Besides, she really made me mad when she sampled Cameo's "Candy" Because that was and still is my jam, and you can barely hear what she is saying. and when the brat comes in, I'm always thinking to myself, "i wonder if she's spitting on the mic, when she's rapping?

Dag, it's like that? You must've heard someone else's boo boo of a remake because Jag's is the fire. I listened to it at first expecting it to sound bad (I never give remakes the benefit of the doubt), but it ended up being one of my favorite songs on the CD.

Nancy Wilson's remake of Debarge's "All This Love"

I love and respect Nancy Wilson as one of the most beautiful singers (jazz and all around), but that song wasn't meant to be remade. Besides, the song wasn't meant to be all jazzy. T-Boz didn't do any better when she sang the hook for a song by Da Brat (can't remember the title).

As stated earlier, Prince songs should never be remade either. If he owns the music, why can't he just dictate that imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery for my musical genius?
