Hi Ladies,

I noticed that the Chi Omega forum has an occasional trivia question posted about their sorority history and thought it might be a fun idea for us to try! (Chi Omegas - I'm stealing your idea! sorry!)

So, for the first trivia question, I'll start out relatively easy. Of which fraternity was Dr. Guy Potter Benton a member?

Good luck! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Oh geez, I am SO rusty on my DZ trivia! Was he a Phi Kappa Theta? I need to dig up my pledge handbook if I'm gonna play this game!

And my new answer for your first question about Dr. Benton is....Phi Delt??? I'm pretty sure it's Phi-Something! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

In the meantime, here's another one:

What are Delta Zeta's official colors? (hint: need to be more specific than "pink and green")

dzrose93

Way to go KillarneyRose! You were right about the colors. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif And your second guess about Guy Potter Benton was correct, too. He was a Phi Delta Theta. See, you still remember the important things! heehee

Way to go ladies!! (By the way, welcome to the board, purpleturtle! I haven't seen you post before.) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Next question:

Who was the first Delta Zeta pledge?

Honeybee
06-14-2001, 03:19 PM
I belive the first pledge was Elizabeth Coulter.

I have another question...it's kind of a hard one though :-)
Why was October 24, 1902 named as the date of our founding???

purpleturtle
06-14-2001, 04:23 PM
I know- it was set as that date because it was Alfa Loyd's b-day!!! It was done to honor her dedication and service.

Thanks for the welcome- and don't give me too much credit for knowing this. I initiated last fall and as part of our new member education program, we had to each pick a founder and learn specificly about her, sharing what we knew with our new member class. I learned about Ms. Loyd!

How did the founders go about choosing our colors?

purpleturtle

The founders chose their colors by matching swatches of baby ribbon at a local department store, untill they found a suitable combination.

I have a question that maybe someone can answer me. In my New Member Ed. classes, I was taught that the official colors were Old Rose and Vieux Green. However, in our new member manual, they are listed as Rose Pink and Nile Green. Any ideas as to why?

I heard lots of stories about how our colors were chosen, but I never knew about the matching of ribbons in the store...it's always interesting to find out new stuff like that. I heard that the colors were chosen based on our flower. They thought that since the pink kilarney rose was pink in color with a green stem, it would be a suitable combination as the sorority colors. I also heard something about our founders having a gathering at someone's house (I can't remember which founder's house they were at) but it was their first meeting together and the carpet in the room was pink and green so they chose that as the colors.

Hi Missy,

I was always taught that the colors are Old Rose and Nile Green. Perhaps there are 2 terms that mean the same thing for each color? It's a good question to ask National Headquarters, I think! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Which two people wrote the Delta Zeta ritual in 1903?

The answer to the trivia question is:

Dr. Guy Potter Benton and Julia Bishop. Julia was the only founder to return to Miami University in 1903 and to keep Delta Zeta going on campus. Dr. Benton, a Phi Delta Theta, assisted her in creating the ritual. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I have a semi-tricky question for you girls. What is the address of our national headquarters?

This was one of the questions we had during new member ed...no cheating and looking in the Lamp for the answer though ;-)

KillarneyRose

202 East Church Street, Oxford, OH 45056

I confess though, that this is fresh in my mind because I sent Nationals a copy of a recommendation just a week or so ago!

PS Have any of you ever visited the National Headquarters and Museum? I never have but would love to

Did any of you girls hear about the Delta Zeta book coming out? I think it's called "A Century Of Sisterhood". Our president was telling us about it, and it seems kind of interesting.

KillarneyRose

I just saw that book on the DZ website (www.deltazeta.org)! Go to the website and then go to "Centennial" and from there go to "Store".

The book is kind of expensive; $49.95 but I think I may ask for it for Christmas or something.

Sorry that I got slack on this, sisters! Here's a new, fairly easy trivia question for you:

Before regions were developed in the mid-1990's, what were the various sections that our chapers were divided into called? (There is a specific term that was used.)

Good luck! :)

KillarneyRose

Provinces! If I can brag a minute, Omicron was "Pride of the Province" for two years in a row when I was a collegiate :)

"Pride of the Region??" Do they still have an award for top collegiate chapter and what do they call it I wonder?

There is Pride of the Region Gold and Pride of the Region Silver.

Correct, Killarney! :) I'm still trying to get use to calling them regions instead of provinces. I wore one of my old Province Day t-shirts to the DZ house a few months ago, and all the girls wanted to know what Province Day was! heehee :D

AchtungBaby80

It has diamonds in the flames or something, doesn't it? I know it's fancier than ours.

Anyone else? I'll post the answer tomorrow (1/7) :)

KillarneyRose

The President's Badge has diamonds in the six wings. It is a traveling badge; handed from President to President. However, each President may order one for her own use.

dzrose93
01-08-2002, 12:47 PM
Oh, darn! I knew it had something to do with the wings! :)

Here's a new question. Since I'm ritual advisor for a collegiate chapter, this one hits home for me...

What jewelry is a sister allowed to wear while attending an Initiation or Pledging In ceremony?

dzsaigirl
01-08-2002, 01:01 PM
Engagement ring or wedding ring. Also if you need a medical id bracelet, that's okay.

You mean the badge? I don't consider that jewelry though...it seems too serious to call it jewelry.

You got it, dzsaigirl! By the way, I agree with you that jewelry isn't a term many people use to describe our badge, but that's how it is referred to when listing what is/isn't acceptable for ceremonies. :)

Great job! Want to come and talk to my girls about this question? I had some really irate sisters a few months ago when I told them that earrings, noserings, etc. had to be removed before entering the Initiation room. They acted so shocked, and I KNOW that this isn't new information to them. :D

That's what I said!

dzsaigirl
01-09-2002, 03:42 PM
But you called them flames instead of wings. There is only one flame on the badge and everyone's flame has a diamond. The things on the sides are wings Achtung.

I know some good trivia. How many times a year does the chapter have to submit an audit? This is tricky 'cause it changed recently.

dzrose93
01-09-2002, 05:59 PM
That's a very good question! I was never much into the financial side of our chapter, or the one that I help advise now, so I haven't got a clue. It'll be interesting to find out, though.

I'm going to guess 2 audits per year -- just off the top of my head. :)

Hey I Know This one!!

There are 3 audits every year, March, July, and November I believe. (I was just elected to Treasurer, so I've been immersing myself in the manuals!)

Wow, it's been a really long time since i've posted! Hope everything is going well. For those who missed it in the recent lamp - My chapter won the school spirit stick, placed second overall in the homecoming float compition, and had both our king candidate and our sister, queen candidate win for homecoming royality. It was really special, because last year's queen was a DZ as well, it was nice to see one of our own crown another one of our own. - okay that's all i'll put here -

You're right. 3 times a year.

Good luck with being treasurer. I personally hated it. Nothing like sending your sisters to the collection agency to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside :(

A little advice: Keep your income and expense sheets CONSTANTLY updated. You don't want to be doing that the night before the audit is due. Also, don't let people talk to you about treasurer crap at parties...believe me, they will try.

Star Turtle
01-10-2002, 02:03 PM
lol - talking about being all warm and fuzzy - my "first official duty" to put girls on suspension, and send them to PB. :( after that - i get to "catch up" the files from the last year!

I'm enjoying the challenge right now - this to me is a position that i can bring up a few levels.

I'll keep you posted!

;)

dzrose93

Jessica,

Being treasurer is a thankless job. I always felt terrible for our treasurer when I served on executive board. She was constantly trying to smooth over hurt feelings with sisters who had a problem with a fine or other financial issue.

My best advice is to remind the girls upfront that you personally are not responsible for their fines. THEY are! Let them know that you intend to do your job accurately, and that you will not play favorites. Remind them that they made a financial commitment to Delta Zeta when they first pledged and that it is one of 3 major obligations that they agreed to uphold in order to be a sister in good standing.

Lean on your exec members for support if necessary, and vent to them when you have to. That's what they are there for!

Good luck, sweetie! :)

DZ Love,
Carrie

Have confidence in your answer, AchtungBaby! You're absolutely right. :)

From one of our DZ chapter websites:

In the fall of 1903, Julia Bishop was the only founder of Delta Zeta who returned to Miami University. She made friends easily and was admired by everyone on campus. The spirit that is Delta Zeta came from her. She was an idealist as well as scholastically inclined. Rush in 1903 consisted mainly of long buggy rides around Oxford in a horse and buggy driven by Julia. Being the Treasurer, she paid bills from her own pocket.

Julia Bishop was the Founder who was in active service longer and later in life than any of the other six. Thus more Delta Zetas were priviledged to know her, and through her to feel themselves acquainted with the entire group of Founders.

My chapter, the Kappa Beta chapter was founded on February 29, 1972 and was installed on April 22, 1972. (I admit, I looked up our founding, I could only remember our installation date.) We are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. We are proud to be the oldest sorority on campus! We also share our chapter birthday with the Eta Rho chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Also, thanks to everyone who checked out my chapters web site!

Another tid bit of info- We just got grades back and we have the highest cummulative and semester GPA out of all sororities again!! I think we have had the highest GPA now for 2 years (maybe a semester less)! Our GPA is a 3.19!! Sorry had to brag on my sisters!

And, two of our women won Freshmen Homecoming Princess and Sophomore Homecoming Princess! I love Delta Zeta!

Ok, I'll stop bragging now...please forgive me :)

My chapter (Omicron) was founded in 1916. I wish I knew the exact date but forgive me because I am very old, having pledged in 1986!

We are lucky to be one of the few chapters to have been actually installed by a Founder; in our case, Maybelle Minton.

PS Brandi; I'm so happy that your chapter is doing well!

BrandiDZ

It must be amazing to come from a chapter with such a long history! Since my chapter is still a baby chapter (in relation to other DZ chapters) we dont have a lot of traditions, and most of our members couldn't name one chapter founder! It's awesome to see so many chapters still going after so many years.

Our chapter was founded in 1974, although I can't remember the exact date. (I've been out of school for a while now!) :)

Brandi - congratulations on your chapter's success. Y'all are really excelling right now! :D Way to go!

I'm going to brag about my UGA girls for a minute. Their cumulative GPA this past semester was a 3.29. This is wonderful, because academics was something that they have been working hard to strengthen lately -- there's a lot of competition with some other sororities on campus. :)
