View Full Version : It's time the tale were told...

After months of lurking in here, following other people's stories and things...I would like to announce that I have decided to pursue alumnae initiation myself. :)
Here's some background:
I went to college at Indiana University, which, as some of you may know, has one of the most hypercompetitive Greek systems in the country. I rushed my sophomore year but dropped out midway through. I got cut from a lot of the houses for grades and I didn't feel like the houses left on my list were the right places for me. I joined Alpha Phi Omega and am a very happy Brother of that fraternity. Still, I've always been fascinated with sorority life, and sororities in general. I've always wondered "what if..." I've felt something was missing, if that makes any sense whatsoever. But I always felt that I missed my chance.
You can imagine how happy I was to find out that alumnae initiation is possible, and that there have been so many success stories on here. Reading those has been very encouraging to me. I've been tossing around the idea for a while but it's been only recently that I've made the decision to do it myself, after a lot of thought. (and several dreams about it, oddly enough!)
I've read the advice post in here, and done some research on the sites of the groups that are around here. There are three groups I've narrowed it down to, and one that I am strongly leaning toward at this point. I like terriers, so henceforth they will be known as follows:
The Airedales (this is the group I'm leaning toward)
The Wire Fox Terriers
The Border Terriers
I will be sending out an initial interest email to the Airedales this week...I just have to figure out what to put in there. :) Of course I'll keep everyone posted.
I'm also going to chronicle this in my Livejournal. There will be more ruminations and stuff than I'll put here, probably. :) It's going to be filtered because I am sure not everyone on earth wants to read all about it. If you'd like to be on that list, just comment in my Livejournal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/sisterhavana) and I will add you.
Anyhow, so I'll stop rambling now. Good thoughts, support, advice, anything else all welcome. I'm really nervous and excited at the same time.

Yay another AI / PNAM sisterhood story to follow! :)
Your leadership experiences in Alpha Phi Omega and the fact your a founding member of your local fraternity will help you (i.e. your familarity of Greek life-fraternal bonds etc.).
Good Luck in your AI search ;sending good vibes your way from a new AI!:D

I'm back!
It went well. I had a really good time...all the ladies were really, really nice and I felt like part of the gang. :) And I actually made a craft project that looked like it was supposed to! (This is big since I am the least crafty person on earth!) They've already invited me to their next meeting.
So far so good! :)

I like to think that I'm creative, but I understand where you are coming from when you say it came out correctly. I've had many an experience where my crafts didn't come out correctly ;) .
I look forward to hearing more about your journey.

The update is that things are kind of on the back burner for now...right now I am jobless and broke and finding work has been my priority. *heh* But as soon as I find a job I will kick this back into high gear.
I just don't want anyone thinking I am not interested...
Sister Havana, your story is so similar to mine in all respects it's almost scary! Were we separated at birth or something?!
Feel free to PM me if you ever need or want to chat about this whole AI experience. Everyone has been so wonderful and friendly here and I feel I want to share some of what's been shared with me!
Sister Havana

Lake: We definitely should chat. :)
So, now that I have my new job (I am going to be a client service representative in the automotive advertising department at the Chicago Tribune! I start on Monday!), as soon as I get settled in there I'll be kicking the search back into high gear. :D
By the way, one of the Airedales who was at the event I went to also works at the Tribune, albeit in a different department. :)

So, as you know AI has been on the back burner for me, first while I was unemployed and looking for work, and now since I am settling in. However, last night I was poking around on the web and what did I see but my smiling face in a group shot from the one Airedale event I attended on the Airedale website! A sign that I should kick things back into gear? :)
Now I just have to think of what to say...

Just my $.02
When talking with one of the ladies about AI and being involved, she said that these women know there is so much on everyone's plate these days. They do understand that sometimes women have to miss activities because "..real life gets in the way.."
Go back when you are able to and to let them know that you are still interested in pursuing AI.

Things are still kind of in a holding pattern, mainly because I am so busy with my Jaycee board position (my term ends January 1) and a couple other things. I want to wait until things calm down a bit before really kicking things into high gear again. It wouldn't be fair to anyone if I wasn't able to give my full commitment.
But I'm still following everyone else, happy to read everyone else's good news (and there's been a lot of it lately!) and in time I hope to have my own. :D

I know what you mean about other things taking over your time and having to put AI pursuits on hold. I am looking forward to hearing more, though. I enjoy following everyone's stories so much!
