Well we've got a thread for everything else, let's talk about some hair coloring. Feel free to share horror stories, tips, etc.

I just dyed mine tonight. I usually dye it myself, but I went a few shades lighter (to a medium golden blonde) tonight and I am not happy with the results. It looks sort of red/orange/brassy near the roots, which is making it look fake. It's nothing I can't go out in public with but I don't like it. So how long should I wait to re-dye it? (And please don't tell me to go get it professionally done...I have many times before and it wasn't all that fabulous...I don't feel like dropping $175 at the salon right now.)

If you've got time on your hands, places like Vidal Sassoon give you a color job for like 30 I think if you let a student do it with supervision. It looks good I hear but takes longer than usual.

i think if you dye it darker you don't have to wait that long - maybe a day or two. but if you want to remove more color you should wait at least a week.

xok85xo is right w/ the waiting times.

also, you said your hair was dyed professionally before. that's probably why you got the brassy color near your roots. that new growth hadn't been chemically treated by dye yet and took to the over-the-counter dye differently. that's why you really should go back to the salon to get your roots done, even though it costs way more. it looks better.
but seriously, it's crazy that you're paying that much, go to a cheaper salon!

I'd agree on the cost. It's definitely more than I pay and I usually get mine foiled with two colors.

I think I'm done with hair coloring forever. Throughout high school and college I colored my hair all the time. One week it was red, one week it was very blond, etc, etc. Last year I figured out my real hair color, went to a salon, and went back to my natural color. I haven't touched my hair since!!

I am that crazy girk in high school that could not pick a color. I am a natural honey blonde, but unless you get a baby picture you could not tell. I have had black hair with streaks in the front those streaks were (not at the same time):brown, blone, green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, neon yellow, purple, red.

Then I go the two layered look that the top part of my hair was wine red and the bottom black. (that was so cool)

Then I just had wine (burgandy) hair for almost 2 years (which was the longest)

Then about this time last year I dyed it dark brown and redid the blonde in front let that grow out and dyed it med brown and have been letting it grow out since Sept 2003.

I almost sit on my hair and I take really good care of it. It is soft and shiney and think, plus no split ends.

My sophomore year of college I had my friend highlight my hair with dramatic blonde highlights. She left them on too long and I had not only platinum blonde highlights, but CHUNKS of them. It turns out my friend took too much hair through the cap holes and so it was very dramatic.

This happened to me when my mom did my highlights about 2 years ago and I looked like trailer trash. I went to a salon right away and told them what happened and had them fix it.

I was highlighting for a while, and I've been back at my natural color for about a year, but I still color it a lot because I'm ALREADY getting grays in the front. No one really notices unless I point them out, but they drive me batty.

Maybe I'll look around and see if there are any places in the area that do highlights on the cheap. I think the cheapest I've gotten them done was for $75, but that was in my hometown which is about an hour away from where I live now. I think even the Hair Cutteries around here charge $65. Maybe I'll just see if this color calms down a little bit.

I started getting my hair highlighted in high school. I always went to the salon except once I wanted to try myself... well that didnt work so well. I have fairly dark brown hair. I tried to go lighter blonde and realized I have a lot of red in my hair bc thats the color that came out. While some people liked it.. I on the other hand hated it. So now I have gone back to having just light brown highlights in my hair. I dont think I will ever try it myself again bc i have such dark hair and its so noticable when you dont do it correct.

Plus I think it could be the salon you are going to .. try somewhere else next time.. the woman who does mine doesnt charge nearly that much and takes a lot of time to make sure the color matchs really good..

I only started coloring my hair about a year ago when it was obvious that I wasn't going to turn a nice even "salt-and-pepper" pattern with my grays. (I can live with gray if it's even; my SILs both look great with it.) I have patches and stripes and random whatever so it looks awful.

I only match my original color (Clairol Nice 'N Easy #120). No problems or horror stories. But there is always ONE hair (maybe two) that just will NOT take color, no matter what.

I've been thinking of getting highlights done at my salon (which is great - top of the line hair professionals) but i"m afraid that they'll start stripping color out to do it and I don't want my hair damaged.

I know I am probably one of the only people that has never died my hair so I am probably asking a stupid question. Doesn't all that cause damage to your hair?

Sure does! But if you condition it and take good care of your hair, you would never be able to tell!! I have gone to many different salons and paid all different prices, but I was most satisfied with my last dye job- L'Oreal in a box!!!!!!!!!!!

I get mine foiled with bleach, blonde and morocian sand warm blonde high lights. My hair dresser does it for me for around $60 and she is a redkin specialist. I only use is redkin hair coloring products.

I used to always want my hair lighter... until my freshman year highlighting disaster.

My aunt used to be a hair dresser or something, but I'm starting to wonder if she had any real training. So I trusted her with the highlight in a box and a cap. Yuck. She pulled too much hair through so I went from dark brown to blonde with dark brown highlights! Yikes! It looked so bad. It looked even worse growing out though! So finally, after putting up with it for a few months, I went and got color in a box and fixed it. I realized that I really do like my hair darker now. I look awful as a blonde.

My latest thing is red highlights. :) I got them done this summer and they looked alright. I think they will look better when I make them a little more dramatic. I will be sexeh! ;)

Lil Hannah - go to Walmart or the dollar store or something and find the cheapest no-name shampoo you can. Wash your hair with that... Really cheap shampoos usually make the colour fade when you use them. My friend had a similar problem right before her prom, and the shampoo fixed it!

Had I not gone to college, I'm sure I would have ended up a beautician. I love to cut, color, style hair! In fact, my stylist give me crap for doing my own hair, but don't deny that I do a great job.

I use Loreal Ferria. I used Revlon all through college, but I upgraded my $2.50 hair color for a $9 box:p I'm lucky, but it looks natural. All my DC-area friends and my husband have never known me as the brunette or blond I was before 1991.

I've been strawberry blond since my freshman year of college. Oh, one semester I went really red to piss of a boyfriend. Ah, the pleasures of youth...my husband would die;)

Me:
"I'm going to dye my hair black. It will uber be cool, and I will wear my emo glasses and look mod."

My hair:
"Muahahah! You now look goth!!"

My *so-called* friend says:
"Oh, not a big deal! Just bleach it! The black will come right out!"

Me:
"Wow, super great idea! I will do that today!" ("Today" being St. Patricks day, when there are parties everywhere)

So I bleach my hair...

My Hair:
"I am going to stay black, and turn brown, red, green, orange, banana yellow, and white! But not in streaks, oh no! In spots! Like a leopard!"

Lady at Sally Hansen Beauty Supply when I pull my hat off:
<her eyes get horribly big, and she can't stop staring at me>
"Holy shit, what on earth did you do?" and then "You are going to have to bleach it completely, but if it gets rubbery, stop immediately, or it will *all fall out*!"

Me:
<in tears> "What in the hell was I thinking?"

My hair:
"Yes, what in the hell were you thinking?"

So, I finally got it all blonde, and put some brown over it. It was never the same. I finally got it professionally done, and it all grew out, after I cut it several times.

**I don't dye my hair anymore!**

^ That is a TRUE horror story.. Yikes

There is only one colour that looks good on me, and that's dark red/auburnish (?sp). Been sporting it for 4 years now, and I NEVER do it at home cause my hair is very prone to damage and major splittage.

I have been coloring my hair for YEARS. My mom used to do it for me, but I do it myself now. During the summer/spring I am a hot blonde:D and during winter it is usually medium brown. This year though, it is dark brown with red highlights. It looks so good that I can't decide if I want to do it blonde now!! I have asked EVERYONE and can't figure it out. I used to use Feria but lately I have been using the new Loreal Colour Expertise. The one iwth the base color and highlights in one box. I will only use Loreal stuff though.
My horror story-I tried to do the deep burgandy look-yeah, I looked like a leopard who had wine thrown on it! I had literally spots of black, wine red, and purple. plus small patches of blonde wich is what my hair started as. It was terrible, and the president of my company was coming in that day. It sucked.

I am a big chicken now when it comes to dying my own hair. A few years ago, I touched up my own highlights with a kit I bought from the store. I did a really good job and saved myself a lot of money. So, when it came time to touch them up again, I thought it would be no problem. WRONG. My hair takes color really quickly and I left the coloring on my hair too long. I'm not talking minutes, I'm talking 45 seconds at the most. So, when I finally got the foil off my head, my once-honey-blonde highlights had turned a lovely shade of platinum blonde. It wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that it was platinum blonde at the roots and honey blonde at the base of my hair. It was a mess. I had to dye my entire head that color and wait a month or so to have it fixed. (I didn't want my hair to fall out, so that's why I waited).

Here's the worst parts....my skin color isn't flattering with platinum blonde hair. :( And my sorority formal was the next night....of course, I was the one who organized it and I looked horrible. :o

I won't be dying my own hair anytime soon.

I looooooooooooove changing the color of my hair. I usually do it at least every 6 months or so. :) I have never in my life gotten it professionally done but I think I decided I'm going to when my tax check comes in.

Any hair dye that contains PPD (para-phenylendiamine) can cause extreme skin irritations if it's on your skin, and it is also a potential carcinogen.

A better way to dye your hair is to use henna (natural henna brands such as Jamila, Kimia, Prabda, Amina, Ahmad, Navaid), herbal hennas without PPD (Light Mountain Natural, or a nice brand from everydayhenna.com - http://www.everydayhenna.com/frameset.html?powder_types.html#ahmad ) or use natural indigo if you want to go dark.

If you insist on using PPD hair dyes, you must avoid getting it on your skin (they don't give you gloves just to avoid dying your hands!). Many people are extremely sensitive to it, and getting it on the skin can cause burning, rashes, itching, blistering, scarring, loss of hair etc.

Ahh, Henna... I have a horror story with that too!

I convinced my buddy Mike that he would be cool with black hair (apparently I had a thing for black... I dunno). So, we put black henna on over his bleached hair... not a good idea! It turned traffic light green.

I agree than henna kicks any other dye's ass, but don't use it on bleached hair! Unless you are into odd colors...

Interesting... I was thinking of dying my hair bright green...
I'm being half serious here. It would be really fun, and now would be the time to do it, since I'm away from school, sorority, fraternity, any serious job searches, etc...
Or maybe not. I'm probably too chicken to do it.

I used to dye my hair red all the time, though. Most of the time it looked natural, except when I messed it up the first time. My hair was so long and thick that I needed 2 boxes to coat it all, only I didn't realize that until I was putting the dye on my hair. Then I had to go out and get 2 new boxes of dye, and wait about a week until I could dye it again without frying it. In the meantime I had weird patchy brown and red hair -- not the look I was going for.
