View Full Version : PNAM needing advice

Hello everyone, this is my first post to GC, but a long time luker. I have a question and I'm a tiny bit confused.
I was a PNM of Group A in the 90s. Just very recently I wanted to reassociate myself with group A, the thing about is they don't have a collegiate chapter anywhere in my area. The alumnae chapter does not seem to be active at all, I've done some research.
I was thinking about inquiring of other GLO's that have chapters in the greater metro area, because I would love to help with collegiate chapters, in addition to there other volunteering opportunities.
My question is, since I was a PNM of Group A, would that make me ineligible to pursue PNAM with other GLOs?

NO, in a nut shell, if you were never Initiated in said group. then you are not a member!
You therefore have the right to persue another Greek Organization!:)
Now the situation is find the right one!
The thing is, there are many Greek Organizations out Here are Great, it is just finding one that you fit in with! That being the People that you are Comfortable with as a Sister!
That being the Question, I give You Jill! She is a black female who affiliated with a So Called WGLO AP, I then defy you to find a Happier Person and a More devoute Backer of GreekDom!
The only thing wrong with JillyBean, she is a F- Rollor Coaster Nut!:D
Sorry Sweety, cannot let that go by!
LUV YA!:)
It is yours to ask and seek, just like any new possible memeber in a Rush Situation!
I and I am sure all wish you the very best of Luck! The dumbest Queastion, is the one you never ask!;)

What Tom said is correct.
I'm surprised that in a city as big as LA, there isn't a chapter somewhere near you. Granted, I'm not from there but Gamma Phi seems to have numerous alumnae chapters in that area, I would think other GLO's are the same.
My alumnae chapter's first AI was in your same situation and came to us wanting to initiate many years after college.
Good Luck.

Thank you for your replies, I'm in sort of the same situation as Jill, that being african-american...
But the problem with Group A is that they have at least 3 alumnae chapters in LA, but there are no collegate chapters. I have had an idea of attempting to bring one here, but it seems to me that all the universities are pretty much saturated at the moment. Of couse working at a college could have given me the wrong impression. I would love to help out a collegate chapters in addition to the community service and other volunteer opportunities. I'm very big on helping non-profits
Group A is still in the running (I don't believe I have anymore "issues" with them).
But I am in the process of contacting 4 others that fit my ideas and have great philantrophies.

I think the important thing is:
1. You are interested.
2. There is more than one Greek Organization out there to look at.
3. Contact someone from a Soroity and introduce your self to them. Explain why you did not join in undergraduate years and why you are wanting to do it now.
I dont feel color should be that worriesome to you as you can see on GC. Bounderys are being crossed alll of the time.
Sure there may be some that still do, but the majority dont!:)
Just remember, "the dumbest question is the one you do not ask!":D
Good Luck and keep us posted! Shame Jill is not near you, you would have a ball! One Neato Lady and AP!:)

Thank you Tom and SmartBlondeGPhB for your replies.
This is a scary thing for me, after what happened with Group A in college, I had a very bad downward spiral, first time being away from home and just the sheer size of the university that I attended was a bit of a culture shock, but I adjusted.
I've put in a call to Group A and have contacted a few other GLOs for their specific requirements.
Each GLO is so special in their own way, its kind of hard. But I have 3 that are pulling my heart strings and hopefully they will be positive experiences, in just going through the process.

I used to work for Mount St. Mary's College in LA right next to (Doheny Campus) USC, and now in the process of looking another job at all the colleges and universities in the area, its been quite hard, I've haven't had a full-time job in over a year, the market is very tough in LA, but I'm also pursuing a home based business in addition to my part-time job.

Actually,
I'm just exploring NPC at the moment. I don't think NPHC has AI and if they do, its an option that I will explore if the NPC doesn't work out.
I was actally a "pledge" for an NPC and at the moment I just feel more comfortable in the NPC arena.

I'm going to follow the ladies lead on the Rush thread and give the chapters names (the Muses names) I've contacted 6 NPC groups that I was very interested in and have collegiate chapters in the Los Angeles area.
Clio, Thalia, and Melpomene came back stating that I need to know someone in the org to recommend me for AI. I haven't heard from Caliope and Erato, but I suspect that is because of the holidays.
I'm only pursing Urania their HQ was kind enough to send me several groups in the area to contact and I've done so. I'm now waiting to hear from the President(s) and hopefully meet with her or the group for some kind of project or gathering.
I'm quite thrilled at the moment, because this groups ideals, purpose and philantrophy are very touching, beside I just love their symbols.

I do have contact info for them, but they do not have a local collegate chapter here in Los Angeles, if I go with them, I would attempt to bring a chapter in the LA area, back in 1998 I did take some steps in re-affiliating with them, but only tentative and I'm looking for a chapter that hopefully has women that are closer to my age and driving distance, the alumnae chapter that I spoke with had neither.

While I totally respect your decision, and it's great that you have choices, all the NPHC women's orgs do AI. I was an AI in a NPHC org, and I've seen moms who get inducted after their daughters do it. LA is one of the best areas to be b/c everybody has at least one, if not two or three or more chapters in the LA area.
Good Luck!

In the So calif area alone is LA NPC ALum Assoc, SAn Gabriel NPC ALum Assoc and Inland empire NPC Alum association.
As for other GLO's I am sure you can find them on their respective sites. But being proud of mine andreading your situation
Alpha Phi has UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount,CSU Northridge, irvine,CHapman, and CSU long Beach for coll chapters.... as for Alum Chapters they all have tons of alum associations attached to them as well.
Either way best of luck in your search. I too was an alum initate and seeing GLOS welcoming more and more everyday.

Is it just recently that Alpha Phi has started doing more AI, or has it always been this way? I've "met" several here on GC, but none of the Alpha Phi's I've known who went undergrad seem to mention it. Is it more popular in different regions?????

Alpha Phi has always done AI. Frances Willard was the first Alpha Phi AI in 1875, I believe

Well this is quite exciting
I've mailed the co-president of Urania and have just gotten and email from Calliope and someone hopefully will contact me within the next month.
Both orgs are wonderful and I just have to see if they are interested in AI and if I'm a good fit within each group.
But I'm getting ahead of myself, I have to talk with actual people here in the area before any type of decision is made, I just know where my heart is and I hope THAT will be confirmed.

I'm currently in a holding pattern of actually getting to speak with individual chapters!
I've have contacted 2 and haven't heard back from either and I'm waiting to contact a third until March.
I do have a couple people here on GC helping me out a bit and truly am grateful to them, since their lives come first than this situation and I understand that.
This is what I want and this is what I'll get, I will wait as long as I have to.

Well Ladies
another update, things are moving at a good pace and I will be meeting with an IO of Urania within the week and she seems very supportive, I also may be her guest at an upcoming event to meet others in the group.
i'm cautiously excited about these meetings and i may find a home by the fall.
With the way things are going in my life right now this is the best news for everyone, for a bit there it seemed to move very slowly and then picked up very, very quickly. At the moment the pace is set just right and I like it.
All of you have been so nice and supportive of me that it has made all the difference in the world. For a bit there I was considering giving up on the entire process. I'm so glad that I didn't.
I can't express in words how all you have helped me and I don't think I can ever repay that.
THANK YOU
Glad to hear that you're meeting with an IO!
I like how you spoke about being "cautiously excited". I've been keeping up with your experiences, and it's awesome to see that you're having a great time finding your home.
Can't wait to hear the details of this meeting!

Hey all,
I went to the scholarship luncheon today and had a wonderful time. It was kind of a heady experience and I reverted to my shy self, which mostly means that I mostly sat there and listened to conversation and had a few conversation about topics that I loved. I had a brain fart about asking questions, but it wasn't the right kind of setting to do so being in a room with hundreds of women of different GLOs for NPC luncheon.
My next move I believe is too send a thank you note to my sponsor in "snail mail" form and ask if there are any upcoming events that I could be invited to so to get to know the members more personal setting. I think this is the correct move...isn't it?
I don't feel it's correct, even in this day and age to send it electronically, for such an important event as this, especially since I would like to be apart of their group. What do you all think?

Ms. Gwyn,
You have such a positive attitude about this and I just wanted to commend you on it!
I've always been a big fan of snail mail because it provides a more intimate and personal tone. The fact that you were invited to a wonderful event like a NPC luncheon is a great thing and an honor, IMO, as most NPC alumnae would not invite just any average Jane to this event.
To me, e-mail seems the most convenient, but...correspondence such as a "Thank You Note" will probably be and hopefully be much appreciated. Just knowing that you took the time from your busy schedule to show some gratitude will be a plus to your progress. It certainly won't hurt to do so.
Good luck in your endeavors and keep us posted!

I agree with OTW and Jill - a short handwritten note is the BEST thing to do! All you need to do is tell your sponsor is how much you appreciated the invitation and how much you enjoyed yourself and that it has further crystallized your desire to become a blah-blah-blah (I forget what symbols you are using). And be sure to end by saying that you look forward to the next opportunity to get involved. You could also re-state what you talked about at the other lunch you went to --e.g. your willingness to help if desired at any upcoming philanthropic events.... Just double check to make sure there are no spelling or grammar errors and it is legible!!!!;)
Sounds like it was a great afternoon!

I just wanted ya'll to know that I've hit a road bump in my journey and I think the FAT LADY is packing up for the day.
I've have her on speed dial to call her back real soon.
I hope to still be a part of Urania, but I have put some feelers out to some other organizations.
With this time of year, its going to be slow moving because of summer and convention season, I really don't except to hear anything but I still very positive and will work on how to get invited back to some events with Urania.
In the mean time I'm also going to contact my "pledge sorority" and ask them some hard questions about my particular situation.
If you guys are not up on THAT situation, go here (http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45528). I just want to make sure that everything was done "correctly", I was never given a clear explaination on WHY and if they did the procedures correctly, hopefully I can get some answers. I'm not bitter, just very curious. Some people that I've talked to recently have raised some doubts and since its been over 10 years and the chapter is no longer in operation perhaps I can some real answers.

Hello Ladies,
I wanted to give you a brief update of what is happening in my journey.
I had such a positive experience with Urania and fell head over heels in love with the women who were helping me, that I nearly got my heart broken when things didnt work out. Not to worry, the best thing that has come out of the experience is that I count these ladies as friends, even though we will not be sisters in [insert GLO name here].
I have contacted a few other groups and have gotten a not so positive result from one (but very glad that I got to speak with someone at least, yay) and now I move on to
Polyhymnia, to be honest with you, this was/is one of my "Dream" organizations. I feel such a connection to them, of course superficial in nature) but nonetheless, I have that connection.
Now I'm just in the very beginning stages, I have had a few email conversations and have some paperwork to fill out, of course this by no means, means that I will become a member, I'm sure its to send to the AAs in my area so see if they are at all interested in sponsoring me.
You know? I feel a connection with all these groups on so many different levels that it can be confusing, but sitting down, writing out what I want and focus on those things makes it easier for me in this process, I've said before that I will always have a place in my heart to the GLO that I pledged in college, but that doesnt mean that I can't find a different home, a place where I will be just as happy, that's how I feel right now with Polyhymnia.
There is no excitement here, I'm just going on a journey and will see how it turns out, I know that I will find my home and it was the place that I was supposed to be all along, it has just taken me a while to get there.
To the ladies in Urania, thank you for all the time and effort you put into helping me with my journey, you don't know how I felt that you help some random person get into your sisterhood, such a wonderful place and I really do wish that it had worked out, but that door is closed now (it took me a while to see that) and perhaps a new one has opened.
I learned early in life, yet sometimes I need reminding that if I get to excited about something, that something usually doesnt work out, so now I'm just along for the process (what I mean, not getting excited, just being).
As always I will keep everyone informed of my journey and I hope that during this journey that no one has or will get hurt, life is just to short for that.
I think I'm rambling now.....

I sympathize, and I hope things go well. I have a firm belief that at some point, I will find my life-long "home" in a sisterhood... but it can be trying at times.
I've also received some unfriendly responses-- but as pinky said... better that it come out in the beginning than later on when you've invested the time.
In the interim, I have my first meeting next week with a GLO that truly speaks to my ideals from their website description. I'm crossing my fingers that things go well and move forward!

Ms. Gwyn,
We've all heard that when a door shuts, a window opens. I am so sorry to hear that things did not work out with one group, but hope that things do with another.
I am doing AI as well, and discovered that one group does AI in only very rare circumstances, which about broke my heart. Each group has its own way of doing AI and that is just how they choose to do it. There are so many good groups out there that do, it's just a matter of finding the place that you need to be. I think this is much more difficult than formal recruitment.
I talked with a colleague of mine who is in a GLO--she said to look at the creeds of the groups, and that will also help you find the values that are important to you as well.
It's nice to get the support that we are getting from the GCers on this board and the other PNAMs.
Please PM me if you want to talk more!

Ok hopefully this will be a brief update......
As you know that I have sent off paperwork for both Polyhymnia. I also have paperwork for Euterpe, but I would like to actually speak with someone at National in order to get some clarifications on some points before I send out that paperwork. Let me reiterate that this paperwork is for introductionary purposes only.
Then suddenly after some long hard honesty with myself and some tears, I decided to contact Terpsicore. And I have been invited to a meeting with them sometime in December.
Like I have stated in all my messages, I do know what I want from these organizations and having read each of their creeds, purposes, mission statements, etc. I have decided that either one of these organizations will be perfect for me.
Each one of their philanthropies effect in one way or the other, so that is not my biggest concerns. Besides the 2 philanthropies that I advocate the most for, I can do on my own, just because I am a part of a GLO (I’m thinking positive here), does not mean that I can’t help as many causes that I would like to!
I completely understand that discretion is the key and some of you may look down on me that I am moving forward with 3 organizations at once, but nothing may come of it or something may come with all of them. I just do not know and will not know until I’ve been contacted by alumna from each organization.
I know that I must sound like a scatterbrain to some of you, but really I am not, I’m just a bundle of contradictions.
As I go through this process, I have to be aware of what I can offer an organization and what I want form that organization.
What I offer is a great passion to see an organization expand and help in their mission statement, creed, motto, etc. A strong sisterhood, to help a collegiate chapter in any way that I can. I want a leadership role, local and then later nationally, like to be a part of the expansion committee, to get this sisterhood in as many places as possible. But really what I think I have to offer is my passion.
What I’m looking for is a great dedication to this amazing sisterhood, to be supportive of each and every member, whether they have 1,000 or 200,000 members, that they are not just a number and a financial payment (I understand that on the surface it’s a business, but its also something greater than that). A great dedication to their chosen charitable cause.
I don’t want to just join an organization just for the letters and the badge. The day after I get initiated I will say to each women in the organization, here I am, I am ready to work any way that you need me, I’m in this for the lifetime commitment that you just spoke about at the service!
Ok this HAS turned into a novel, I’m stopping now :D
I hope I translated my feelings clearly

Ms. Gwyn,
Congratulations on narrowing it down! I had some hard decisions to make as well, and have asked for paperwork from two different groups. Once I look at the paperwork, this will help me further make my decision.
PM me if you want to discuss this further!
Good luck!

Well I just got back from my luncheon/meeting with Terpsicore and all the ladies in attendence really seemed open, glad and positive that I attended and expressed a great interest in their organization. We brought gifts for a house for abused women and children, luchen and a meeting. We spent some time for introductions and backgrounds and how they had come to the alumna chapter and the chapter of initiation. Looking at these women and the convention pictures have solidified my decision persue them, the one draw back is that it is a group of mostly older women. With Polyhymnia, I have yet to hear anything from them so, we will see if anything come from it. With Euterpe, I kept calling the Alumna Service Rep, but could not actually speak with someone and leaving messages that were not returned also turned me off a bit. I felt like I was hitting a brick wall. They are such an amazing group and all the women on this board who belong to that group are just so amazing, but in the end I just felt that is was not there.
I have been invited to a meeting in Feb with Terpiscore so things are positive and they have already mentioned that they would have to contact National in regards to my situation and the next steps in the process.
Since that is almost the same thing happen with Urania I am not going to proclaim anything and say that I am in, you never know.
I will be giving updates as soon as they happen.

Well for those who have been keeping up with my journey, I just got a message tonigh Terpsicore has requested paperwork for me from National. Since I do know this is where I belong (I have been in denial on this). I am no longer persuing Polyhymnia, a great group of women and one of the dream organizations. But I have found my home and its with Terpsicore.
I know things will work out with Terpsicore, these ladies just seem so happy that I am a part of them and excited at the prospect and the great feedback. If by some chance this falls through I will stop my pursuit for a bit, but that is not going to happen.

Well another update for you guys to think on......
I think I am pretty much in, I've taken on the responsibility of designing the new alumnae chapter website and will be participating in the founder's day celebration (includes non-initiated members).
I am paying local alumna dues (not national, yet)
the only thing that I don't have is an initiation date and that probably will not happen for a while...we are talking Fall (at this point) and I have two options open for me during that time line.
But until I have an initiation date, I will not reveal the group, but some of you ladies know which group, please don't say anything, I really want to shout it from the rooftops when I have that date in hand.

not much of an update because the June meeting was changed from this weekend to next weekend and will be the last one until the Fall.
I found out that Alumna director for my region is in the same chapter that I pledged in college and she remembers me! That is a nice connection there.
I am still waiting on paperwork, hopefully I will get some next weekend. I am still working on the website, man I used to love designing websites, but since I have stopped almost 3 years ago, it is very hard to get back into the groove! but I am moving along nicely.
As for the group, I really will not mention who it is, just in case (hey, until dues are paid and I have a date in hand!) something awful happens, but it does not look that way at all.
When these things happen, I will have a guessing thread...I like those! Being realistic, I don't think that will happen until the Fall.
Good thing I am a patient person or I'd be pulling my hair out!

If you're getting paperwork, then it looks like you're in. But, I don't blame you for being cautious. You're doing the smart thing.
I think a lot of people underestimate how difficult the AI process can be. You've waiting a long time, so once you get your initiation date, you'll be very relieved.
Don't get discouraged if you don't hear anything this summer. That's normal. I bet things will get hopping for you really fast in the fall.
I'm excited for you! :D
Thanks for the update Ms Gwyn! I have been thinking of you and had been meaning to PM you to find out how things are going. It is MOST DEFINITELY your turn to join the "Class of 2005" (as blueangel calls us!).

It is funny how some look down there noses at AIing.
But going to college and rushing is usually one Semester, maybe two.
But, AIing is a period of time that can seem to last forever.
But as has been seen on GC AI, there are many wonderful people who have attained Memberships and are some of the most hard working people just for the fact that they did work, sweat, and wait for something to happen.
Never give up hope, as Adults with many things going on in our/thier lives it takes longer but seems to be worth it in the final ending of the process.

How insightful & sweet!
I agree - very insightful and sweet!
I am also relieved that the AI process is over for me. It's definitely not as cut and dried as "regular" recruitment is. And my membership is so meaningful to me because I worked so hard to get it (five years!). It's not something I consider a "means to an end" or a stepping stone to something else later on...the AI process represented that to me!!

Thank you SF Hopefully
but I was this close before with another group, I had a potential date, etc, but I needed a "sign off" and that fell through very quicly and all avenues that lead to that group, were cut off instantly.
So until paperwork is signed, inter/national dues are paid (check is cashed), badge order is placed, I really will not be revealing anything, nor getting to excited.
Make no mistake, this group is in my heart and has been for quiet a while, I would be devastated if everything fell apart. I have a good friend who is pushing her group (if things fall through, but that really isn't in my mind and would be a while before I would even entertain the idea) they are a dream org for me.
But hey I am very positive about this experience and I KNOW in my heart that it will happen (please, let it happen).

I can relate to this. There were times that I was doubting where I was supposed to go, and I seemed anxious. It was so great to get my letter when it happened.

Well ladies
it has become a waiting game.....
I just got back from AC group meeting and it was wonderful, had to drive a ways, but that is no matter.
I got a status update on my application (apparently, I don't need to fill any paperwork out at this stage). The president of the AC sent in my forms to the Alumnae Coordinator for our Region, she put her signature of approval and sent it to National and it has entered the "blackhole" that can sometimes happen at any NHQ. The President did call the Director of Alumnae Services to see if they received the paperwork, but has yet to hear back. At this point I do not know what the steps are (meaning, do I need approval from the EC or if the Director sees the approval and then sends me paperwork to fill out)
The next meeting will not be held for a few months, so I have to sit on pins and needles til then (unless, I get "approved" between now and then and everything else happens).
You know I got some pictures from some of the members, since I am still working on the site (long story) and to seel that history and the old programs from Convention and some the great ladies of this organization, I am just in awe.
I tell you, I have found home and I have made the right decision, my journey is over (almost), I can see the finish line....but I am not excited (if I get excited, this will fall through as with all things that I get excited about.)
If I hear anything, you guys will be the first to know.

NOTE: I am using these titles for general purposes only and not trying to leave clues for my group

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Tri Sigma is my guess as well. And I almost *never* guess in these threads! :D

Yah, we sure don't.

I know a secret, and I'm not telling! :D
Congrat's Ms. Gwyn! You've worked long and hard for this-- and nobody deserves to be an AI member of this very special group more than you. Congrat's! It won't be long now!

Throw AGD into the Triad that doesn't use "degree"!

Ms_Gwyn, I am so happy to see things have worked out with your group. You have earned this honor, and I know that your initiation will be a special day for you.
Lots of love from the NAM Class of 2005!

I'll guess Sigma Sigma Sigma, since many more knowledgeable than I have already put their guess in for them as well (and I don't know much about Sigma Sigma Sigma and their new member process).
ADPi is another one I'd like to guess for - we have a membership exam (I'm not sure if AIs do, but it's part of the new member education process for the organization), we were founded in Spring (May), we're a three letter organization :D, and our pin is a shape/symbol (diamond is a shape, right ;))...the only thing throwing me off is the "degree" mention.
Either way, I can't wait to hear your happy news, ms_gwyn! :)

you know....there really is no point in this..:D
am I that transparent?
anyway....I think if I had actually narrowed it down to the chapters that are no longer at ASU and if you guys have read my various threads....it would have been a no brainer....
No big surprise...I am now (yet again) a new member of the wonderful sisterhood of
Sigma Sigma Sigma
I do not have a date for initiation, but again, I am paying local dues and coninuing to work on the website....

Well after almost 2 years of being a pledge of Sigma Sigma Sigma
I am now a proud member of the Iota Alpha chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma.
My ceremony was today and it was beautiful and heart stopping and I almost cried several times, but I kept it in.
To have those women in the AC surround me was the most special part of the ceremony. These are the women, from day one way back in December 04, who immediately accepted me as their sister and now I am an official sister.
I already talked to the National Officer who presided over the ceremony and yea...I'm contacting them on Monday about volunteer opportunities....just like I said I would.
I have a feeling that the people in Woodstock, VA will become very familiar with my name. :D

As the saying goes,
It's not what you become, but what you've always been.
I was thinking about you all day today! I kept wondering, "is it happening now?" "how about now?"
I wanted to call you so badly but I didn't want to interrupt any post-initiation celebrating. A million hugs for you Sweetie! You did it. You made your way back home! I'm so happy for you.
Has it sunk in?
You are now and forever a Sigma Sigma Sigma!
They are so lucky to have you! (((((Gwyn))))) :)
