View Full Version : San Diego Area GC Gathering

Okay, so while talking in the thread about meeting someone from GC, I threw out the idea of organizing a gathering of GCers from the San Diego area. I'd love to meet more of you that are here in the best place to live! :)
What would work for you (where should we meet, what should we do, when should we plan on meeting, etc.)? Use this thread to start throwing out ideas, and hopefully we can get some concrete plans together to meet up with one another sometime soon!

I'm not from the San Diego area, but I'm only about an hour or so away! I'd love to do something if someone is going to make plans! Keep me updated!

We should decide on a general area first: North/South, Coastal/Inland. Mission Valley/Fashion Valley, RB/PQ/Poway, PB, La Jolla, Carlsbad, Del Mar?
polarpi

How about centrally located, since it sounds like we can pull people from up north, closer to the city itself, I'm up in Ramona, etc.?
So maybe the Mira Mesa/RB/Carmel Mountain area?

HI There,
Depending on the day and time (weekends best) I might be able to make it down from Los Angeles. What about sometime during winter break from classes.

Meeting during winter break would work for those of us living in the area, but others who go to school in the area might be going home for the holidays and stuff like that. I'm not ruling it out, just bringing up the possibility of people not being able to come if it's over the holiday break.
Right now I'm going to a community college, so I actually have close to a month off from school for break during the holidays, but I don't know what you all think.
Any other suggestions? :)

As I said in the other thread, I'm all for a GC meet-up in San Diego! I'm centrally located in Clairemont; so I'm good to go for most county areas. :)
How about somewhere in Mission Valley/Fashion Valley? For example, Trophy's Sports Grill and Bar in Hazard Center. Or, maybe we can go to The Old Town Mexican Cafe in Old Town....something like that.
Since I don't drink alcohol, I'm personally not keen on going to a flat out bar or nightclub. If everyone decides to go to a nightclub, then I'll probably stop by for 5 minutes to say hello and then go home. Sorry. :( If everyone is intent on having a party hardy GC gathering, then can I suggest starting out at someplace like Uno Chicago Pizzeria on Mission Blvd. in Pacific Beach? That way, we can have a fun place to hang out to start with; then, people who want to bar hop can carry on down Garnet Ave.
I'm really busy for the next two months' worth of weekends, but I think I can manage any weekday except for Tuesday evenings. I hang out with friends every Tuesday; plus, I am *not* going to miss watching "24"! :p Weekends are sorta bad for me right now but individual days may be available depending on when everyone wants to meet.

I don't really know how to end that.

Why did I find that so damn funny?:D
I too am centrally located so most locations are cool with me. And as far as weekday/weeknight I'm cool with either as long as it's not too early on a weeknight due to traffic after work.
Since I'm always open to a good drink, any restaurant with a bar sounds good to me. ;)
One vote each so far.

In all honesty, anywhere we decide on meeting is fine with me. I'd probably be with navane...I don't personally drink, so if there's something else *plus* alcohol, I'd be fine. Meeting for food is always a good thing! :)

what about dave and busters in mission valley, or the waterfront (old school bar and kinda restruant with the best burgers) downtown, or anywhere in pb, or sunshine and co in ob....i am down for whatever, as long as it is a fun environment.
oh, and i schedule class around happy hour, so timing is not a problem!

I was actually thinking about Dave and Buster's when I first even thought about the idea about trying to get a San Diego get-together organized :)
I'm free basically any night except Thursday nights, and if we meet on a day when I had classes earlier, I can always go hang out with the grandparents until it's time to leave and meet up with all of you....so I guess I'm saying that I'm pretty much open to anytime that works for the majority of you! :)

It's a restaurant, do they not let people under 21 in after a certain time? I've only heard rumors of restaurants doing that but only have seen it done if it's actually a night club in the evening. Like a lot of the bars downtown.

Yeah. They don't let anyone under 21 past like 8 or 10 or something.

I was thinking I've heard Friday's does it but have never actually witnessed Friday's doing it. But then again, the only Friday's I've ever been at late enough to matter is the one in LJ and they'd be crazy to lock out the majority of their business.
-
I think if we do Mission/Fashion Valley area we should to Dave and Busters. If during the week, starting between 6 and 8pm. If on the weekend somewhere between 3 and 5pm.
If we're going to do to RB, I think the Elephant Bar because it's right off the freeway and easy to find. Otherwise if we're thinking north, I'd say Chilli's at Scripps Poway (again, easy to find for people not familiar with the area) or one of the restaurants in Carmel Mountain.

I think I'm good for Friday. There is a chance I may have to be somewhere Friday night, but the person in charge hasn't e-mail me yet. :p
I don't know what time happy hour is at D&B. Plus, it has to be at a time Panda can go w/o there being a 21 rule. At any rate, I'm pretty much good to go! Can someone post a time please?

According to Dave and Busters' National Website:
Guests under the age of 21 (legal drinking age) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (a person 25 years of age or older who agrees to be responsible for the conduct and safety of the underage guests). Our N. Bethesda and Philadelphia locations enforce a year-round 11 p.m. curfew for guests under the age of 21.
Going to the information about the San Diego location, all I could find were the normal hours of operation for Fridays ~ 11:30 am - 2:00 am, so if anyone knows specific times under 21ers need to be out of there or anything, please post it! :)

I'd love to come down but I just wanted to check what the official time frame was. I'd have to drive down from the LA area and depending on when you guys wanted to call it quits I'd have to figure out when to leave and whether or not I should stay the night, etc.

If you wanted to just stay the night, I could probably set you up at my Grandma's house! :) She'd love the company and I could stay the night there as well...it's closer to D & B's than my house!

When: Friday, December 5th
Where: Dave and Buster's Mission Valley
Time: 7pm until whenever
Please state whether or not you're going. Thanks!

Friday nights in general are pretty good for me. If we move it to the 12th, will those of you with finals next week be able to come, or will you be heading off for winter vacation?
The only ones that sounded like they'd be going if we had it this Friday were josh8o, navane, and myself, so a date change might work a little better, but I don't want to make the decision for anyone else. Imput from anyone else? :)

Okay, new idea....
What time will you collegiates be back in the San Diego area after Christmas break (i.e. when do classes start up again) ? Why don't we try and plan something for January when everyone's back and it's the beginning of the new semester, so there shouldn't be the tests and major assignments that are plaguing you now?
And anyone else who wants to/can make it on the 12th, we get together then? :)

The 12th works for me too, and we can always plan more get togethers throughout the year so we can A1) meet new GCers and B2) see the GCers we have met before!
So Kelly and anyone else that can make it the 12th, do you still want to do Dave and Busters or save that for the next get together and we get together at a restaurant or something?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing!! :) I was wondering if maybe it would be an idea to meet up somewhere in Mira Mesa (like Fuddrucker's or Pat & Oscars or something), *or* we can maybe even meet-up "closer" to Ramona in, say, Poway (I dunno, like Round Table Pizza off of Community Rd?)?
.....Kelly :)

12-05-2003, 01:21 AM
Ick, not that Roundtable. I was there today and thier service is beyond crappy. :(
I'm cool with Poway too, since I work there.
PolarPi, any preferences?
polarpi
12-05-2003, 02:40 AM
Anything works for me...I don't mind driving down to Mira Mesa...and I'd probably actually prefer that especially if we're going to a restaurant, because since I had surgery back in June (gastric bypass) there are only certain things I can eat and at certain places, so maybe somewhere like Applebee's there in Mira Mesa?
navane
12-05-2003, 04:56 AM
Ok...Mira Mesa is cool with me! I'm not sure exactly where the Applebee's in Mira Mesa is located - I know it's on Mira Mesa Blvd. somewhere. I also know that there is a Mimi's restaurant right off the 15 at Mira Mesa Blvd. in that new shopping center. PolarPi, maybe since you have the most important requirements, I will defer to you to pick the "winning" place. :)
Unless, of course, we want to do some non-food related activity. Though, I can't really think of any at the moment! I know there's an ice rink in Mira Mesa, but, please, no skating. I did 10 years of competitive figure skating...... :p (FYI - hanging out at the front gate of MCAS Mirarmar looking for Marines is probably a no go as well ;) )

12-06-2003, 02:09 AM
The Applebee's is right across the street from Mimi's Cafe (which is also a possible meeting place for food). I agree on the no skating....I'm a klutz, and me+ice skates = imminent disaster! :D I don't know what else is around the area there in Mira Mesa besides the Edwards cinema there on the other corner from Mimi's and Applebee's.
And we'll definitely plan another get-together for sometime around the beginning of the year....we gotta get as many SD GCers together as possible whenever we can! :)
SoCalGirl
12-06-2003, 02:38 AM
That area of Mira Mesa also has On The Border, Islands, Pat & Oscar's and Buca's (but I don't think we'll be able to eat that much!). There's also a Filippi's on MM Blvd on the Scripps Ranch side of the 15.

I don't think I will be able to make it either. :( Since I'd be coming from the LA area, I usually get off work at 5pm, unless I'm approved to work til 4pm, so that means I'd have to battle the traffic going south, not that I mind but I live pretty far from the SD area as it is. Bummer. By the time I get down there, it'd probably be time for me to start heading back home since I'll have a full Saturday on the 13th. What time are ya'll meeting again?

Friday would be the 16th and Saturday would be the 17th if we stick with our original time frame we had discussed. Either way, I'm about 99% certain I'd be there, so let's get a date and time to meet scheduled! :)

I personally prefer a Saturday. And I got my dates confused. Anyhow, you may also want to consider that if we're meeting at D & B I think it's at 3pm when they start checking ID and anyone under 25 has to be accompanied by someone 25+ in order to get in. At least that's how they do it up here. You can count me in if it's on a Saturday.

It's been a while since I went to D&B's, but here in San Diego when I went we got there in the late afternoon (3 or 4ish) and they didn't check anyone's ID's, and all of us but one were under age 25...maybe San Diego's D&B is a little more lax?
Either way, I'm of the thinking Saturday would work better probably for most, so why don't we set a meeting time of 2pm for Saturday, January 17th at the San Diego Dave and Buster's...I'll be there, and I can get there early to try and "find" everyone as they arrive if need be.
(I wasn't looking at a calendar the first time I mentioned dates when I thought the 17th and 18th were the Friday and Saturday dates)

.....I wish y'all had decided to do this get together when I was in San Diego (12/26-1/2) for my folks' 50th wedding anniversary and a family reunion (and a trip to the National Championship game at the Rose Bowl - USC - #1!!!!!)
I ate at one of my fave restaurants (cuz they have one in Atlanta I enjoy as well) -- GORDON BIERSCH! as well as one of the Mexican Restaurants in Old Town (something Popal -- it was good!) and shopped at Fashion Valley (way too many after Xmas shoppers there!)
Gordon Biersch would get my vote (if I were still in San Diego) as it is big, yummy and easily accessible!;) :D

I wish I had remembered you were coming down this way....some of the GCers who live here year round would've probably enjoyed getting together with you! :(
A lot of the San Diegan GCers were out of town over the holidays because a good majority of them are still in school, so I think they were all spending the holidays elsewhere. Next time you come down this way, though, we'll definitely have to plan a get-together! :)

It was really awesome meeting all of you and listening to how different and alike we all are from our various organizations. And of course who could forget those stories?. =) Gosh I got soooooooo sleepy on my drive back up to LA..haha. It must have been food coma or something. I even considered getting off the 5 to take a power nap and I did get off the freeway but as I was driving around trying to find a place to nap, I was suddenly wide awake. I probably should have ordered that cup of coffee I was debating at D & B. So anyway I cheated and took the toll road (73 N) back to LA which cut my trip by at least half an hour.

Hey y'all!
Looks very likely that my two sons and I will be heading out to San Diego for a few days during winter break. The dates are
17 - 20 Feb. I may have to leave to return to Atlanta on Friday night the 20th. My hubby is a Delta Air Lines pilot so we fly standby on whatever flights have seats.
Would a Thursday evening get-together work for everyone? Maybe we can meet at Gordon Biersch - one of my fave restaurants! Or one of the restaurants in Old Town?

I'd love to come down but I have a midterm that day and by the time I get out of class (it gets out at 8) and drive down there I would be too exhausted to do anything but pass out. But have fun anyways and take pictures so you can share with the rest of us!

Seau's is down in Mission Valley on the east end of the mall...I haven't been down there in a while so I don't know what's around it.
Thursday night sounds okay to me....I'll be driving down from Ramona, so whatever time works for most people I'll drive on down (I'll just miss choir rehearsal for that night :p)

I was feeling the same way...I haven't really had the opportunity to wear my badge all too often since I've graduated, and I miss wearing it, so I think I may dress up in pin attire as well. Kelly, Josh, and Stan know what I look like, and I also have a picture up in the Greekchatters group photo album, too, if your curious who to look for.
If any of us are the first to arrive, is there a ballpark number that we should give to the host/hostess about how many we'll need seats for?

And it was great(fun) to see the separating of the drinking buddies and the non-drinking buddies :D

hey
the gamma phi's loved the magnets. there was about 30 gamma phis from canada who were traveling down the west cost and stoped in sd to visit the ones here at state. i gave them some of the magnets too. as for the redbull...yuo can either mix it with vodka, or use it to replace the splash of coke in a long island...it gives some drinks a kick.

I have *NO* idea how to do that. Normally I post the picture into my own photo album, then put it into one of the Greekchat albums (or post a link to view my photo album so people can see the picture)...but I don't know how to do it to where the photo would appear here on the board :(
Sorry I couldn't be more help, Cele!

Cele,
You have to upload it to your own home internet account and then link to it from GC.
That is, say, if you had AOL, you would upload the picture to your AOL account online file area via FTP. Then insert it into one of your GC posts using the "IMG" button just above the text area. When the IMG box pops up, you enter the internet "website" address to your photo. For example, it would be something like: http:// members.aol.com/ yourname/ GCphoto.jpg
and then click "Ok".
If you have no idea how to do any of this, you can e-mail it to me and I will post it for you! :)

Ok! I'm always up for a GC gathering! :)
Though, picking a day next week (polarpi and ASUADPi) or the week after (wishinhopin) will be a little bit tricky for me.
You see, I just got a job with the Cirque du Soleil production of "Varekai". (Yay!) I'll be working in the VIP department for the 5-week run of the show. I have to go in on Monday - that's when I hope to find out my schedule.
At the moment, I have no idea which days I might work other than to say that I'm pretty sure Sunday evenings are free. :) There is also a good chance that Tuesday, March 23rd will be open. Polarpi, which days will ASUADPi be here?

We haven't worked out everything we're doing just yet, since we just decided she needed to come out for her visit *last night*! :D (Aren't we great planners????) What would you all think about doing something Friday night? Brianna and I are going to the SD Zoo that day, so it wouldn't be much of anything (I don't think) to get together down there in the evening or something after we're done at the Zoo. How about it? I'd love that! I have Saturdays off and get off work Fridays at 6:30, so that would be awesome. I really want to meet up with a lot of you- the only GC people I've physically met are my friends from UCR and sisters that are on GC... I need to meet new people (right James?).
I might be able to get some friends to come out with me that night as well- Friday is the last final for my best friend (not Greek, but pro-Greek and I'm ensuring she'll be an AI in a few years) and I have some other friends who may be interested.

Ok, so here is my usual work schedule: Tues-Wed-Thurs 6pm-11pm. Then, on Fri-Sat-Sun 2pm - 11pm. Working at Cirque du Soleil is really fun, but the schedule prevents me from attending evening get-togethers. :( If you all want to do a daytime event, that would be good too.
I do not work Sundays and we have no shows on Monday. Soooooo if we could swing a Monday night that would be really, really cool. That would be workable since Cele and Jennie aren't available on Thursday. I could *possibly* go on a Tuesday night or Wednesday night if you all make the decision ASAP . That is, our schedules are made up on Thursday - to get the day off, I'd have to put in my request tomorrow before 5pm.
Please, please, please consider picking Monday so I don't have to leave my co-workers one person down.

I've really been wanting to make it to one of these things and everytime it's fallen through!
My schedule changed at work, so here's when I can make it. I'm assuming we're talking about next week (April 4-11?)...
Sun, 4/4: going to be in Vegas, so not available
Mon, 4/5: coming home from Vegas, work from 4-9:30, so not available
Tues, 4/6: no work, no plans, totally available
Wed, 4/7: work 4-9, available after but it would take a while to get to SD
Thurs, 4/8: work 4-9, available after but it would take a while to get to SD
Fri, 4/9: work 12-6, available after (again would take a while to get to SD, but not as bad)
Sat, 4/10: no work, no plans, totally available
My best days would be the usual: Tuesday anytime, Friday night, or anytime Saturday.

Ok! So I just found out from one of my supervisors that my department will not be open as usual on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Sooo...here is my revised availability:
Sun, 4/4: available after 12pm
Mon, 4/5: open all day
Tues, 4/6: open all day
Wed, 4/7: open all day
Thurs, 4/8: work from 6pm-11pm
Fri, 4/9: work from 6pm-11pm
Sat, 4/10: work from 2:30pm-11pm
