View Full Version : Advice about AI

Okay Ladies and Gentlemen,

Here I go. I have been reading your threads and I have finally decided to participate. It became obvious to me some time ago that I would like to join a GLO. I attended a women's college where NPC sororities where not allowed. I am a member of two professional fraternities and an honor fraternity, but I feel that I can both gain and contribute to a sorority. The problem that I am having is that I do not know anyone in a sorority and specifically I do not know anyone in the one that I am particulary interested in. I have contacted nationals with my interest, but they have not volunteered to put me in contact with a local alumnae chapter. Here is where the help comes in I have PM the person on here who said that they are interested in helping any potential alumnae initiates, but I haven't heard anything back. I know this may sound whiney, but I'm just really excited about the organization. Also if you have any suggestions about contacting the local alumnae chapter since nationals has not offered I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

I'm so glad to hear that you are interested in AI! I would try PMing that person again - sometimes PMs can slip through the cracks. If you don't hear from them in a week or so, try PMing someone else within that organization and I'm sure they'll be happy to point you in the right direction. AI can definitely be an uphill battle for some people, but I think they'd all agree it's well worth it! Good luck! :)

Welcome!! The process toward AI can be terribly frustrating at times, but it is also one the most exciting things I have ever done. I really do feel that I am opening another chapter of my life (no pun intended ;) )

My progress has been fairly quick because I did send a PM to a GC member from my number one choice, and she has been wonderfully helpful. Her advice brought me straight to the person I needed to connect with.

Best wishes for a successful journey.

I agree with Kathleen. The PM may have gotten lost in internet la la land, or the person might even have been/be out of town.

I'm surprised the national HQ didn't give you an alumnae chapter to contact, but they might have a specific policy. Did you try the org's website?

Good Luck!

All the NPC groups have as their address www. letters of the sorority spelled out.org, for example

www.alphasigmaalpha.org

except for

http://www.dphie.org/
http://www.aephi.org/

(if there are others, let me know)

Try typing the address out instead of using a link.

Welcome! :)

I'm really surprised that HQ didn't give you an alumnae chapter contact. I know that when I contacted HQ for the org I'm pursuing AI with, I was given the name of a contact person within a couple of days of sending the first email.

If the first person you PM'ed doesn't contact you, definitely contact someone else who's a member of that org. Everyone here has been really great.

Best of luck from one Jen to another! :D

It is a matter of protecting personal information. This is what happened in my case. I was never given the name or email of the president of my alum chapter first. They sent her my information and she contacted me via email. That way if the chapter is not interested in AI, they are not placed in the awkward situation of having a PNAM with their home email or work email that they are not interested in pursuing at the time.

That was my experience also. A couple weeks or so after I contacted Internationals I got an email from the local alumnae chapter president inviting me to an event. Hang in there!!

Update on my situation. I finally heard feedback from 1.5 orgs. One I have heard definate feedback from and I am waiting to be contacted about events. The other I have a phone message from and I am trying to get in contact with that person.

So things are progressing, I think I just need to have some more patience.

Okay so I am playing phone tag with the representative of one of the organizations that I am really interested in and I have also received a phone call from another organization that I am open to learning more about. I didn't get a chance to speak with either woman because they called while I was in class so my phone was off. I still haven't heard from the other group that I'm really interested in, but with positive results after waiting for a while and finally getting responses I can wait a little longer. Wooo Hooo!

I finally spoke with the representatives of the two organizations that I am interested in joining. There is good news and bad news. One of the organizations you need to know an initiated member sponser you which I don't so they are out. The other organization was really positive and I am supposed to go for coffee on Thursday with the current chapter president and the past chapter president. The conversation was great and I'm really excited! I'll let you know what happens!

Let's not be tooooooo hasty in dismissing one group. You can get to know members through a variety of activities, and then get sponsored. Find out what events they have in the upcoming months. At this point, explore.

Good luck on coffee w/ the other group!:)

Coffee, which actually turned out to be drinks and dinner, went really well I think. We talked about why I became interested in AI and what made me interested in the particular organization. After my long explaination was over she talked about how she was interested in women taking more leadership roles in the chapter. We seem to be meshing really well. We are supposed to get together with some other women from the chapter in the next couple of weeks to do another after work dinner and also so that I can meet more women from the organization and they can meet me.

She did say that she hasn't ever been involved with AI before, but she was going to do research to learn more about the process and what exactly she needs to do I the chapter decides they want me. All in all I think the initial meeting went very well.

As a response to Rho's comments I flat out asked the representative from the organization, who is a Grand Council member, that if I didn't know any members that I was at a standstill and she said yes. No attempt was made to put me in contact with a local alumnae chapter or anything so I think the option is closed.

I am really encouraged by the meeting last night and I will let you guys know what happens!

I received an email yesterday from a local collegiate chapter. The sister was inviting me to lunch to learn more about the organization. I replied to her and told her that I thought she had the incorrect person, she addressed the email to a different woman, but that I was definately interested in her organization. I futher explained the I was a graduate student and not even at her school, but I she was still interested in lunch I was definately interested in learning more about her organization and alumnea initiation. She said that she was and we plan to meet after both of us are done with finals.

I initially thought about just deleting the email because it's was not addressed to me and the organization is different from the one that I had dinner with last week, but something told me to take the chance so we will see where this goes. I've found that things that seem to start out odd usually end up being okay.

Just thought I would share so info since I haven't heard anything back from the other organization yet.

I received an email from the first group that I went and had dinner with a week and a half ago saying that they were unable to sponser me for alumnae initiation. So it's sort of back to square one, but I did receive an email from one of the organizations that I had contacted saying that they were going to forward my info to the local alumnae chapter so maybe that will produce something.

As it stands now I've emailed back and forth with one org and we are going to set up a time to meet after the first of the year. The other org has my info and I am patiently awaiting contact from the local alumnae chapter.

A member of one of the organizations that I was orginally interested in contacted me about alumnae initiation. She is gathering the information about it and said that she would get back to me in the next couple of days.

I am so very excited because I thought that all changes with this org were over because of the requirements for AI, but she has essentially come to my rescue and I am so excited because the org was/is my first choice!!

I'll keep you guys posted, but think good thoughts about good things happening!

I'm sorry, I get the impression that I made you feel bad or something. :( I didn't mean to cause discomfort by asking. I mean, if looking at more than one org is a crime, then I most certainly would be guilty.

I did review your story so far and I am still confused. :( For example, you just said that things went nowhere with the "other" org. Some of the repsonses you got seemed to overlap. Ie. you first went to dinner with the second sorority. Next you got an e-mail from someone in a third group? Then you got some news from someone in the first one? So when you say, "other" I have no idea who you are refering to.

I think it would help if you gave nicknames to them so we could follow along. You know, like give them names of candybars, national parks, constallations, or something.

I just want to be able to follow along with you!

We're rooting for you!!! It's great that you have had some opportunities - go for it!! :)

jhujenn
07-21-2004, 06:14 PM
Oh you are definately not making me feel bad. My honest opinion is that I should at least explore every opportunity which comes my way. The easiest way to explain is to say I have either heard a no or not had any responses to my inquiries with other organizations. So I think we can essentially start with a clean slate as far as orgs go.

I will start naming them though, hopefully I can keep track of who I name what, being 33 weeks pregnant I swear I have lost half of my brain power to the baby. Okay since I'm normally a big clothes horse I will start naming them after my favorite stores.

I am currently in contact with Ann Taylor. After finding out my original information about the org's approach to AI was incorrect I contacted the VP-Alum and asked about the process. She emailed me back asking for my mailing address to send me info in a couple of weeks when she returns home. I've responded.

So currently I'm am waiting on info, but I'm very enthused about this opportunity.

Hopefully this is a little clearer.

What was the "paperwork" for? Most paperwork is an application to join and applictions to join are supplemented or signed by a sponsor. If you had both of those things then I don't see why they'd turn you down.

That just doesn't seem right, though! You shouldn't be sending in paperwork at random unless you've met their requirements. The way you'd know if you met the requirements is if you had a sponsor who was able to help you know if you're measuring up to the process. I guess I can't really say for sure since I don't know which group you're refering to, but they shouldn't have told you to send it in and then, if approved, "they would work everything else out". That gets the candidate's hopes up! And now you're disappointed.

In my own experience, one sorority sent me the paperwork waaaay early in the process before I had even gotten a hold of the alum association. The guidelines VERY CLEARLY state:

Step 1 - AI fills out the application
Step 2 - The alum sponsor(s) write a recommendation supporting the candidate and send forms and app to the HQ
Step 3 - The HQ AI committee completes a check to make sure the requirements have been met and an Executive Board vote is issued regarding the AI
Step 4 - The collegiate chapter in question votes on the AI
Step 5 - The collegiate chapter and HQ work together to set and initiation schedule.

So, it was very clear to me that I was not eligible to send the paperwork until it had passed through a pre-approval from the alum association. Even then, it was not me who was doing the sending!

In the case of the other sorority I was working with, they interviewed me until the cows came home, extended membership to me and THEN gave me the application. That is, I got the application AFTER the regional coordinator said that she felt I was a suitable candidate and that XYZ would love to have me as a sister.

 What happened to you was uncool.

I haven't heard anything from the other groups for the longest time. I think the leads there are pretty much dead.

Ugh....I've so been there before. :( If this is still important to you, just keep trying!

I thank you for your enthusiasm, but I'm not upset at the org. I did what they told me to do, I sent in paperwork, met with alumna, and it didn't work out. I would have been thrilled to be member, but that's not the way it's working out.

I'm not an Alpha Phi, so I cannot answer for them but, while there are several GCers who are Alumnae Initiates of Alpha Phi, IIRC their organization has "slowed down" on AI in the past year to better refine the process. I believe many organizations who are active in AI have taken this step.

Well that leaves out Phi Mu!

Founded in Macon, GA...national headquarters in Peachtree City, GA

It's not Tri Sigma.

I'm going to go with Tri Delta or Delta Gamma.

So another clue is that they have a collegiate chapter at IU....

This is so exciting!! I know you have waited so long to find your home, and I can't wait to find out who it is!

My guess is either Tri Delta or DG.

Give us more clues!!! And let us know soon!!

Congratulations to you!! :D :D

Assuming IU is Indiana (which may not be correct) AST is out.

And since ZTA has a pretty stringent process, it's probably one of those two either way.

I'm guessing DG

Woohoo! Congratulations to you!

I haven't always been in Indiana. I was in DC until September when I moved back home.

Okay I guess I shouldn't try and type clues while entertaining my children because I really didn't mean to give Delta Delta Delta away so quickly. I didn't notice the pearl at the top of the Delta Gamma badge so I thought they had a three pearl badge as well.

Anyway I will be initiated at Indiana University next weekend. This is all happening so fast that it's kind of a blur.

Oh my goodness!! I just stumbled on this newly updated thread and found out I have a new sister!! Congratulations!! That is just great!! Welcome to the Tri Delta family!!

Wasn't the moment you received your official welcome and approval just fabulous?? It has been almost a year since my AI journey ended (after 5 long years) and I'm still dazzled that I'm finally a Tri Delta.

Get ready for initiation, because it is just an absolutely beautiful experience!!

PM me when you come back down to earth if you want to chat! I've been having problems with my PM box lately, so just keep trying.

Again - CONGRATULATIONS!!

Just an update for anyone who is concerned I will not be initiated this weekend as I orginally had thought. Due to a scheduling conflict on my part I will be initiated next weekend at Butler. Only slightly over a week to wait.
