Ok, so I know it's a little early, but I'm excited and everyone loves rush threads, so here goes. Besides, it's about time I had a rush thread, don't you think? ;)

We have:
Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Chi Omega
Zeta Tau Alpha
Delta Zeta
Kappa Delta
Chi Omega

Recruitment dates:
Information Meeting - August 15
Round 1 - August 16
Round 2 - August 17
Round 3 - August 18
Preference - August 19
Bid Day - August 20

I'm a little nervous, but mostly I am so excited. I'm a junior and a nontraditional student, so I'm being realistic as well as hopeful, but I can't wait to meet everyone in my Rho Sigma group as well as the different chapters! Everyone cross your fingers for me, and just say a little prayer that I don't trip on my heels or anything... I've met some wonderful women so far, and they've done nothing but put me at ease and encourage me.
I'm still picking out clothes, and even conned my mother into a shopping trip in a couple of weeks.
I just cut my hair fairly short - it's all one length, and a couple of inches below my ears. Any ideas on cute, easy styles for rush?
One of the dresses I plan on wearing is a powder blue sleeveless shift with a scalloped hem and eyelet detail at the hem, and I need to find some cute shoes and a cardigan to go with it. Ideas on colors would be VERY MUCH appreciated.
That's all for the moment. Can't wait to get started!

Try a side part and keeping your locks wavy a la Reese Witherspoon at last year's Grammies. Here's a link to a picture of it:Reese at Grammys (http://channels.netscape.com/ns/celebrity/gallery.jsp?floc=g_reeseryan&gname=reeseryan) I'd also suggest pulling a part of your hair to the side with a glittery clip. The kind of clip you put in your hair depends on your dress. Anyway, hope that helps! Good luck!

Ok, I have 2 days until Orientation, I'm moving this afternoon, and I am quite nervous as well as very excited. I can't wait for this to get started!

Good luck! :)

With that blue dress, I'd suggest white accessories. Maybe a shawl instead of a cardigan - it's a little more unusual, and easier to slip on and off if you have to walk outside, but it might make you look old-lady-ish depending on the style.

And, as many of us have said over and over again... comfortable shoes ;)

i'd like to say ditto to all of the wishes of good luck to you :D ...it sounds like you're already very prepared for a lot of stuff, including cute rush clothes...i like the idea of a shawl over the dress, maybe a light one with some interesting designs so you don't look like a grandmother...i know some rho chis who say that, even if you don't have a lot of new or trendy outfits, it can sometimes help to have interesting jewelry that can be conversation pieces, like a necklace from a favorite aunt or a hairclip that you bought on vacation...sisters can often see a photo of a PNM and say 'Oh, yeah, she had that beautiful shawl' or 'She's the one with the chunky necklace' or something like that

I saw the list of recruitment dates, which is the same on the website, but I don't know anything about times and where to obtain an application (I searched the MTSU website but I couldn't find it). Go to the Greek Life Office which is located on the 3rd floor of the Keathley University Center on campus. If you're not already moved into Murfreesboro, you should be able to find the phone number of the Greek Life Office on the website.

If you call, ask them to mail you an application. Then you can fill it out and mail it back (or take it right back to the office if you're in town). The people in the GL office will be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

So I break down and go shopping for a NECKLACE and CARDIGAN to go with the aforementioned blue dress and I come home with 3 NEW DRESSES. They're cute as they can be, all of them together were less than $80, and I can get ONE pair of shoes to go with all of them. I did that on purpose... See why I hate shopping? I'm such a sucker that I end up buying completely new clothes instead of just accessories. Then again, what girl doesn't feel great in new clothes when she wears them the first time?

There was one problem I noticed when I got home and tried them on for my roommate: My tatto on my shoulderblade shows. It's just a little butterfly, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, so it's off to the mall again for a cardigan or shawl or something... Maybe I'll come back with a few new shirts, a couple pairs of shoes or something. And of course I'll come back without a cardigan.

When I worked in cosmetics I would always recommend Dermablend to cover tattoo's for occassions. It worked really nice, and that has been 10 years. It is usually hidden on one of the smaller make-up counters because it is not a big enough line to have a rep. Have a rep show you how to use it first. And if you decide to get it, try it out a couple of times before the parties.

I totally and completly understand that one. my mom never liked the idea of me rushing the first time and I cant even let her know im going through this time b/c shes threatened to take away my college tuition..and w/o her paying for school well Id be in some big trouble. lol She just thinks that its too much money and a waste of it at that. but of course she was never that much of a social and outgoing person like I am and she never did things like this when she was in school. she had me at 20 so she didnt really have time for things like that it was me school and her marriage. so I dont expect her to really understand I just wish that she would keep an open mind sometimes and let me do what i want to do w/o the bitching lol.

Good Luck! You will both find your places :)

(sidenote: My parents got a letter from AST after I was pledged talking about how they could be involved and whatever. I dunno how other orgs work but you might want to put your address down as your school one, if you want to ensure no letters get sent home before you have a chance to tell your mom. Just a thought if you choose not to tell your mom that you are rushing.)

Summer school, which was supposed to help raise my GPA, actually HURT my GPA. Damn history class... It's still high enough to rush, but talk about a blow! I'm so upset with myself for that... I got A's in the other 2 classes though.

I'm getting more excited as it gets closer. I've been keeping a journal so I don't drive everyone crazy by talking about it continuously. I found some shoes, thank God, and am waiting to hear back about who my rho sigma is.

I have a night class the same night as Pref! :( I hate to leave class early, and I wouldn't go at all, but it is the first day and I lose my seat if I don't go. I just won't have that "I just got ready" feeling when I go to Pref. I'll have that "my brain is fried because I just came from class" feeling.

Little E
07-29-2003, 12:44 PM

Careful leaving a small class early! Try talking to the prof, but first your Rho sigma (orwhat ever they're called)

MTSUGURL
07-29-2003, 01:50 PM
My class doesn't end until 7:40, and it's a hard class to get into, as well as very small. I'm just going to have to leave early. That way, I've shown up so they can't take my name off the roll, and even if they count it as a tardy, I'll have to take it. What I'm wondering is, since it is a university sponsored activity, wouldn't it make sense that it would be excused? ;)

pinkyphimu
07-29-2003, 02:02 PM
crystal, they definately will not excuse you from class. ask your rho sigma what you should do. depending on what time pref starts, the glo you would be going to first would be notified that you are coming right from class. they will not penalize you bc you had class!!!! you can always get your hair/makeup done before class, so all you have to do is change into a dress....and RUN to pref.

Not a Mezzo
07-29-2003, 02:05 PM
Having a class right before Pref should not be a problem. Every sorority stresses that academics come first--that's what you're in college for, right?--and won't hold having a class against you.

And I don't think I've posted to your recruitment thread yet, but GOOD LUCK!!!! You've got a lot of people pulling for you, and you sound like an awesome girl. Have fun in recruitment!

I definitely understand how the class situation can be at MTSU at times.

HOwever, you might consider e-mailing the professor in advance to explain your circumstances.

Also, I am guessing--just guessing--that you will not hear who your rho sigma is until at least August 1.

Again, good luck, and remember to just have fun. You will find your home sweet home!

Wow, at our school, you didn't find out who your Recruitment Counselor was until the night of Greek Forum!

Just chiming in my two cents: talk to your professor BEFORE classes begin AND talk to your Recruitment Counselor as soon as you meet her. Bring your class schedule so you have a concrete excuse and (nicely) stay on top of your Recruitment Counselor to file your excuse with Panhellenic and get confirmation from her that you are cleared to be late to prefs. As tempting as it is to put sorority at the top of your list of priorities b/c you want to make a good impression and show them you are interested, SCHOOL COMES FIRST!!!! (Learn this now and you will be way on top of things and a great role model for your new member class!)

When I was a Recruitment Counselor, I ran into two instances: one of my PNM's slept in and completely missed her first party. There was nothing we could do b/c it was unexcused and she got cut from that first house for being a no-show. My second PNM had orientation the same afternoon as Round 2 and had to miss parties that day. She had a valid excuse turned in to me at Greek Forum and she was cleared and good to go. She wasn't penalized and joined her favorite sorority!

Good luck Crystal, and all of our other PNM's!

My friend pointed something out to me. It will be the first day of class, and all they do is hand out syllabi and go over them. Most likely I will be out very early, so this won't be an issue. I'm going to go already dressed and ready. It's not like I'm wearing a prom dress! :) I'm getting more excited... 2 weeks!!!

One thing that I am interested in finding out is how the alum from the chapters here are still involved with their sororities. Since I am older than the typical PNM, alumnae involvement is a big draw for me. I want something that I can be involved in for the rest of my life.

What is one specific memory that you have that makes you the most proud to belong to your sorority, and what do you treasure most about it?

Thanks for all the good wishes and advice - we have the best women here on GC!

I think some of my proudest/greatest moments are right now--within the last year, as an alumnae.

It is such an honor and priviledge (sp?) to be able to give back to something that has meant so much to me and my life. It is the reason that I am the person that I am.

Being in a sorority (in my case, fraternity), has been an amazing chapter in my life--a chapter that thankfully does not have to end b/c I am in the wonderful world of alumnae life.

In the N'ville/M'boro area, there are a lot of opportunities to be involved in the alumnae world.

I know that Chi O, AOPi, ADPi, KD and ZTA all have a lot of active alumnaes in this area. I am not certain about AXO or DZ, but I am sure that they probably do as well.

The alumnae opportunities are great. In ways, I think, my alumnae experience has been even more wonderful than my collegiate experience.

Regardless, as you go through recruitment, ask the different sororities what alumnae life is like for their particular sorority. Do they have a local alumnae chapter? How involved are their alumnae with them?

Again, good luck. I know that you will find the right home!

I feel fortunate that I was able to experience Zeta sisterhood at two universities as an undergraduate student, but I definitely agree with just1ZTA that some of my best memories have been as an active alum. I am currently the Vice President of Membership for my Alumnae Group, and it is wonderful meeting Zetas from all over the country.

Crystal, I am so excited for you as your recruitment quickly approaches. Be sure to enjoy every moment, and I know that we are all excited to hear about it!

I agree-- I loved my experiences as a collegian and I treasure knowing that as an alum I continue to meet wonderful people and I am still having the time of my life being Greek! Sorority membership is what you make of it; it can be 4 years or for life. It's up to you! :)

My greatest experience with my sorority has to be my move from Florida to California a few months after graduation (I mentioned this on RedFox's recruitment thread, too). I packed whatever would fit in my car and took my best friend along for the ride (she is a fellow sorority sister!). We had the most amazing time seeing the country and taking little day trips to places like New Orleans and the Grand Canyon, staying with friends and sisters all along the way. And when I moved to LA, it was my sorority house roommate's older sister (also a Greek) who helped me find a job. And then when I joined the sorority alumnae assocaiton out here, I felt instantly comfortable and have made some of my best friends in LA through the association!

College was a blast-- football bus rides, socials, recruitment, formals, being on exec board, Homecoming, Greek Sing, Candlelightings, serenades, meeting tons of people, intramural sports, decorating sister gifts and sharing road trips, classes and the college experience. But like with anything in life, I know the good times just keep getting better and the best is yet to come! :)

Yay, recruitment will soon be starting!!!! I can't wait to read your threads! :)

Wow, now that's a great question, Crystal. I have so many, I'm not sure I can only single out just one.

I've been able to make new friends in many different places, just because of my choice to join AOII. I've had opportunities to travel and learn from some of the most amazing women ever, and I wouldn't have it if I hadn't joined AOII. I've learned how to run events for 100-500+ people and literally how to run a Corporation from my AOII experiences. I've stayed active for almost 20 years, in an organization started by women for women. That just rocks :)

I'm proud to be a member of Alpha Omicron Pi every day. Everything from attending rituals to seeing an AOII decal on a car makes me proud, and I treasure every moment of it.

Good luck in recruitment, Crystal--I'm pulling for you and can't wait to hear about everything!

MTSUGurl, I definately agree with you when you say alumnae involvement is a big draw. I joined as a junior, and really want to be an active alumnae.

One of my favorite ADPi memories so far was our weekend trip to the Ronald McDonald House during my Alphaship (new member period).

Since it was a 5-6 hour drive, we carpooled and caravaned to the RMH and it was so awesome to get to know some of the sisters better!

While we were at the Ronald McDonald House, some area ADPi alums came to help us, and they brought us lunch. They were so sweet!

I met an 80-year old member and it was so amazing talking to her about her collegiate ADPi experiences and how she has stay involved as an alumnae member. She even brought her badge and it was so awesome!

I'm definately looking forward to next semester's RMH trip to meet with more alums and help out :)

I just got my recruitment schedule, and it doesn't look like there's a 9:30 day anymore. I think it was originally Sunday, which I was sort of upset about because I'd have to miss church, but it's been changed. Either AOPi (http://www.mtsu.edu/~aopi) or KD's (http://www.mtsu.edu/~kds) website has an updated recruitment schedule. I wish the Panhellenic page was updated so I could look there for info when I lose my schedule...

I'm officially DONE with summer school! Whoo hoo! I'd say I'd never do this again, but alas... I'll do it again next year.

8 days!

Ok, I still have almost 2 weeks before my rush starts (although it's starting to feel like 2 hours) and reading this exact schedule of your rush is making me even more excited and nervous!! I don't think I find out who my Rho Chi (or Sigma) is until the first info night, and I know I won't find out schedule specifics until then either, so I'm completely in the dark until the 20th. But from what I see here Crystal, you're gonna have a lot of fun. Can't wait to hear more!!!!!!!

Okay, I'm confused. Am I right in assuming that anyone can attend the picnic and it is not just for sorority members and pmns? Otherwise it would be kinda stupid to have a picnic where most of the attendees couldn't talk to one another, lol.

The Presidents Picnic is for everyone, just not greeks. But the majority of the people that show up are Greek. Usually Presidents Picnic is before recruitment starts not during...

I hope that clears that up! :D

Anyone can go, but it's mostly Greeks, people who live on campus and lots of freshman, or just people who want FREE FOOD! ;) There are lots of free food events during the first couple of months of the Fall semester.

So, I MISSED Orientation. I drove frantically around campus looking in every auditorium I knew of because I didn't know where it was (my computer has been down, and I've been moving, so I didn't get the email.) I did finally meet with my rho sigma, (who is as sweet as she can be), and got all my information. I hate that I didn't get to meet the other girls in my group though. That's what I was most excited about!

Of course, all of the other girls that I saw were absolutely gorgeous, blessed with great hair and the ability to tan (I don't have that...), and several had their mothers with them. I envy those girls - my mother rolls her eyes whenever I bring up recruitment. The rho sigmas that I met while searching for mine were all very friendly and excited. People are moving into the dorms today, so there were several sorority women helping people move in. Kinda nice to see. :)

I meet my rho sigma group tomorrow at 1:00. Whoo hoo I'm finally getting started! And only a year after I joined Greek Chat. ;))

I went to parties in this order:
AXO, ADPi, AOPi, XO, KD, DZ, ZTA.
At ZTA, I got to meet ZetaLuvBunny! I was so excited!
I didn't follow the advice about comfortable shoes. :( I had to borrow some from my friend because I couldn't find any that I liked. They HURT. But, I got through the night and had a wonderful time!

These are not in order of the parties that I went to.

France - I really enjoyed this group. I met 3 girls, one was the president that I had met several times before. I had a lot in common with these girls, and they were so genuine. Conversation was a breeze! I felt really comfortable, and not intimidated like I thought I was going to be.

Italy - The conversation was very very forced. I was polite and tried to be interested, but I had to carry the conversation. While the girl was trying to tell me they were diverse, she said, "We're not all smart, and we're not all pretty..." I understood what she was trying to say, and that she was probably very nervous, but even when I met someone else I still wasn't very interested. I didn't have anything in common with this group. I got a lecture about the philanthropy, but couldn't really talk to the girls I met - they seemed very uninterested.

Canada - I honestly expected not to like this group, but I really enjoyed it! I met a few really sweet girls that nearly cried during our conversation when I asked them wat they liked about their chapter. I felt like I had alot in common with them.

Ireland - I expected to love this group and I really didn't. It felt like a job interview - a really forced conversation, businesslike, and I only met one girl who didn't really seem that interested in talking to me. I smiled and nodded alot. She talked continuously and I didn't really get a chance to ask questions.

Greece - I really liked this group as well, which I expected. I was actually rushed by one of my brother's ex-girlfriends (they're still friends), and another girl that is a friend of my brothers. I had a great time. Conversation was easy, and I feel like I really learned alot about the chapter.

Spain - I LOVED THIS GROUP! I went in with almost no opinion about them, but the girls were so outgoing and sweet. They were incredibly easy to talk to, and I really enjoyed meeting them. I felt very comfortable with them, and I really hope they ask me back.

Germany - I LOVED this group! I felt very comfortable here, and felt like I learned alot about the chapter. I was mainly rushed by one girl, but she introduced me to people. I can't wait to see them again.

I get my invites at 11:55 tonight.

I was cut pretty harsh. Tomorrow I will be attending France, Canada and
Ireland. (in a different order: ADPi, KD, and XO.)

3 of the groups that I loved (2 that were reasons I rushed to begin with), cut me.

I'm extremely disappointed, but otherwise ok. I considered for a split second dropping out of recruitment, but that didn't last long. I really loved 2 of them, and although I really didn't enjoy one, I'm trying to tell myself that I may meet someone I really love in there tomorrow.

Honey, I hope that you at least continue through until the end of recruitment, even if you ultimately decide not to join a group. The reason that I say this is that one round is not always enough to tell whether or not a sorority is right for you. After the first round of recruitment, Tri Delta was not in my top three. To tell you the truth, it may not have even been in the top five (out of eleven groups) -- I can't remember for sure. But when I went back for round two, I liked them a lot more than I had the first round, and by Pref I knew I was home. The problem was that round one is skit night, and our chapter is just not that great at skits -- but we can put together a knock-your-socks-off heartfelt pref night. The girls you talked to at the sorority you didn't feel so comfortable at might have liked you, but they might just not be great at rushing, and it could take a while to get to know them better. You might love them during the next round.

Plus, you got two of the sororities you liked most . . . that's nothing to sneeze at.

Please don't take the cuts too seriously -- for all you know, they might have been mostly due to age. And that sucks, but we all know that it happens at many, many schools.

I'm glad you're sticking with it -- and anything could happen. :)

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm really excited about 2 of the groups that I have left, and even though I expected to be cut heavily, it was still a blow and a disappointment. One of the groups that I'm going to I'm very excited about, but I don't know that they've ever bid an upperclassman. I'm thrilled to get to know more of them today!
Something that ocurred to me last night when I stopped and sat still long enough for common sense to settle in. We can only join one group, so it really doesn't matter how many I get invited back to as long as there's one (that I love) come Bid Day...

I know I got cut the heaviest first round...it's my least favorite round, honestly. I know you're disappointed, but you still have AWESOME groups to choose from. Please consider what sugar & spice said...SDT was NOT my favorite group at the start. If I had dropped out when my favorite group dropped me, I would have never found my home. I was conflicted all the way until Prefs...and then I just knew what I had to do.

You sound pretty optimistic, though. Hang in there...we're all pulling for you!

At one point, I was pretty disappointed by rush because I got cut hard, and the three girls on my floor that I rushed with all got EVERY invite.

My RX told me the following:

Two of my favorite groups were still on my list (of five). Forget that the other fourteen sororities exist, and pretend I am starting rush with five groups. I was sure to love one of them by bid day.

I had a wonderful time tonight. I still love France! I want this group. I felt absolutely wonderful and so comfortable there. Like I said, if it were a perfect world and I got everything that I wanted, I would get this group. I didn't finish my craft here because we were talking so much. :)

I still loved Canada. Actually, I loved them more than last night. The girls that I met both came and found me to say hello, which was really sweet. I talked to the most people here.

I actually enjoyed Ireland this time. The girl I talked to was really really sweet, and the conversation wasn't forced at all. I was pretty comfortable here tonight, and I think that I could be happy here, but they're not my first choice.

As it stands now, I'm ranking them

1. France
2. Canada
3. Ireland

Here are the activities (in no particular order.)

KD - we made little buckets with stickers, candy, pencils, and wrote little notes for the children they would go to.

XO - we made cute little felt puppets that will be sent to a couple of different places, one of which is St. Jude's in Memphis.

ADPi - we made little coloring books that had so many object with a lttle flap covering the number. These will go to the local head start program.

I would love to go back to all of these, and I feel like I really clicked with everyone tonight. Now, I'm just afraid I'll be cut because I'm so much older. Keep the encouragement coming! It's much needed, felt, and appreciated!!!

I get my invites tomorrow, but won't be able to post until tomorrow night.

Well, I was only invited to one tonight, but let me just say that this is the chapter of my dreams!

Ireland cut me :), as did Canada :( but I can honestly say that I feel no disappointment. I loved Canada, I liked Ireland, but France has been my dream home since I can remember noticing sororities on my campus. I just never thought it was realistic. I don't know that it's realistic now, since Pref isn't until tomorrow and I'm practically a senior citizen next to some of these girls, but I hope I hope I HOPE that I get to Pref tomorrow!

Question about suiciding: I don't have a choice about it, seeing as how I'm only attending one party (if I make it to Pref night). One person had advised me to list another group that I liked in case of snap bidding, but I don't get it no matter how many times I read the quota thread, the 500 suicide threads, etc. It would seem to me that attending only one party I should only write down one name.

MTSU - You can put down a second sorority, whether they invited you back or not. That way, you don't suicide. You can do this even if they didn't invite you back.

Crystal, I put down a sorority on my pref card that I didn't attend pref parties for. You can still do that!

Unless your local Panhellenic has some weird rules, you can't be "punished" for suiciding if you were only invited to one pref.

I agree, but it doesn't hurt to put down the two. You never know!

i suicided. i was in the same situation you are in and felt I had to since every other house had cut me after second rounds (i had the worst rush experience of all time). in a way it made it really easy...i just filled in my pref card, signed it and gave it to the plady looking over them. of course i had to listen to her for about 3 minutes lecturing me on suiciding and i ended up almost in tears trying ot explain to her that i was cut from everywhere else, but it was worth it when i made it past the time the rho chis had to tell women they were cut and i hadn't been called. just don't listen to those who try and talk you out of suiciding. most houses only invite those on their bid list to pref. i wish i had known that before :) just have a blast and don't worry about anything.

As you can see, there are definitely pros and cons about suiciding. The one thing I would add is, you have to remember that you may have only been cut by the tiniest of margins. If a chapter must release a certain amount of women between each party (a LOT of schools make the sororities do that!), maybe they could only invite 50 back, but you were listed 51st.

Please take that into consideration. From what I've read in your thread, yes, you love France, but you also were comfortable in Canada and Ireland. You waited this long to be part of the Greek system - don't cut off your nose to spite your face!

Sure... in a PM. I love this group, and can't imagine ever saying anything negative about them. The only reason I'm still holding out is because I want to keep ya'll in suspense. :)

Tonight was SO MUCH FUN. The theme was "Real World", and they talked about how they loved France because they felt comfortable there, knew they could be real, be themselves, and not someone that they had to pretend to be. That really hit home tonight and let me tell you why:
I pulled a groin muscle sitting in a wierd posititon last night for Philanthropy night, but didn't hurt until I was teaching a girl how to do a cartwheel at work, then the splits, and then "OHMIGOD I'M HURTING REALLY BAD!" I had this really cute dress to wear, these really cute shoes, but I couldn't wear the shoes. I had to wear HOUSESHOES. My only houseshoes are pink, fuzzy slippers with bows on the sides. If it had been any other group, I wouldn't have gone in there with them on - I would have suffered. I felt so at home here. My rho sigma, the sweetest girl in God's creation, had the recruitment director tell the French girls ahead of time what had happened. The girls I talked to were wonderful, and very understanding.
So after the fiasco with the pulled muscle I had a VERY INCONVENIENT situation (are you with me girls, cause I ain't spelling it out!) that was of course taken care of by my rho sigma.

I want this group. The best thing that could've happened to me was being cut everywhere else so that I could really see without a doubt that this is my home. Let's all hope that they let me move in. :) If I don't get in, I'll be disappointed but ok.

I talked to my rho sigma, and she said it wouldn't be considered suiciding to put down just the one group, but I thought about putting down Canada as a second choice just in case.

There's a girl going through that is bipolar, and she told my rho sigma today that if she didn't get an invite back to her favorite it would send her into the hospital again. How's that for pressure!
I can honestly say that I am SO glad that I waited to go through rush. I feel like I am havig all the benefits without (much) of the heartache. There was really only a couple of hours that were bad, but I got to spend a lot of time getting to know my Rho Sig and her sister that I wouldn't have had if I had have been invited bacl to every party.
Thanks for the support girls! I'll check in tomorrow after I know if I've made it to pref!

In regards to suiciding - yes, you can put more than one group, even if you didn't attend their pref -- BUT, keep in mind that if you put down those groups, and one snaps you, you are OBLIGATED to that chapter for an entire year, regardless of whether or not you accept their bid.

A con for suicding is (thanks to whomever put it in such great words) you could've been cut by a tiny margin as previously stated -- and putting down more than one may help you get a bid.

But, on the other hand, if you know that you will only be happy at one place, then you must go with your heart. It will serve no purpose for you to put XYZ down first, and ABC second -- only to have XYZ decline you and ABC pick you up.

So its a gamble - one is a much safer bet as far as numbers go, but the other is safer for your emotional state! I just can't wait to hear all about it :D :D

When I was a PX, we took away the term "Suiciding" and replaced it with "SIP"--- single individual preferencing. We tried not to encourage SIPping-- but there were still girls who did it. Our reasoning was that the computer program we were using would kick out a SIP, and she wouldn't get placed, even if she was on top of the first bid list. Girls SIPped anyway, so we had to do a lot of hand matching. Ai caramba!

I am a die-hard fan of my sorority, and it made me very happy in college and now as an alum, but I know I could have been just as happy if I had gotten my second choice, or even my third. I encourage every PNM to put down two choices. I think of all the women who DID get their second choice and how happy they were. I know not everyone will agree with me on this, but I do believe everything happens for a reason in our lives.

Good luck Crystal. Whatever decision you make, we are behind you 110%!

I do want to echo something that ucfadpi said on another thread, though. You don't know what's going to happen yet. There may be someone who wasn't happy to get a bid from France, and they may come back with a snap bid or COB! Especially if they told you that it was because you're a junior - I would look at that as a very good indication that you could be snap bid (if possible).

Please don't despair!

Yes, you can still be snap bid, even if you haven't attended prefs. One of my best friends got her LilSis that way. Her Lil Sist pref'd "Scotland" and "Russia," but didn't get a bid from either. On Bid Day morning, "Brazil" AND "Argentina" called with offers! She's a very happy Brazilian these days :) Another girl in my PX group dropped out after day before prefs, and "Argentina" called her, too.

Never discount COB. It might happen, it might not. You never know how rush will turn out.

I think you can be snapped as long as you attended "the maximum amount of parties possible." Even though you didn't go to Pref, you went to all the parties that you were invited to, so you'd still be eligible for a snap bid.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong?

Anyway, I'm sorry things didn't work out, Crystal. I know that people are going to tell you stuff like, "Everything's okay in the end -- if it's not okay, it's not the end," and as much as you don't want to hear it, it IS true and you will find a home somewhere or another. It may not be this year, it may not be in college, it may not even be in a sorority -- but it will happen.

Don't count out COB yet either!

As much as I would love to believe that I would get a snap bid, realistically, it probably won't happen, so I'm trying to not get my hopes up. I'll look for COB opportunities, but I know they won't come from France and I don't want to settle for any group just so I can be Greek. I'm going to try and start a new campus org, hopefully sponsored by the Victim's Rights Group in Nashville, which does fundraisers and benefits for things like child abuse prevention, domestic violence, etc. What I would like to do is hold a fund raiser on campus for the dosmestic violence shelter in my county, and I'm thinking that there are a few artists I could get to come out and help. I don't know much about BSP, but I believe they are noncollegiate. Hey - great idea with this!! If you need more help brainstorming, or need volunteers to help, then I would definitely contact the Alpha Chi chapter and let them know what you need. Since our national philanthropy is helping victims of domestic violence, they would most certainly have literature for you to use (such as statistics and booklets). I mean I know you'd want this to be your own thing, and that is great - but if you can get things that are already done (like the info) then that would really help you out too! No need to re-invent the wheel, right?

Well, I keep hearing everything happens for a reason, and I think I found one. My father had surgery today, (he's fine), but I really needed to be home. This whole week has been marked with accidents, sick people, injuries, etc, but I honestly can't say it's been a bad week because each time things have been ok. I was able to be home with my family tonight (although I definitely would've loved to be at Bid Day with a new home), which in the scheme of things is much more important.

These are just RUMORS, meaning I haven't heard from Greek Life whether they actually are. I emailed them today, and hope to hear back in the next few days. I only know the one group for sure. I know that it's tough to get in as an upperclassman (I went through a similar situation), and honestly, COR can be the greatest experience of a PNM :) Also, there's the chance that the organizations that you weren't too impressed with in formal recruitment may be the ones you really like when you get to see them in an informal circumstance (that's how my chapter is with recruitment ~ more relaxed and "ourselves" when it's not in a structured week of parties! :) ) As everyone's been saying, keep your chin up, and any organization would be lucky (and should be proud) to call you their sister!

No COB for France. :( But I think it's kind of like a first crush - they were the group that I loved to death, and although it didn't work out, I'll always have a soft spot for them!

My fortune cookie said last week: "Good things will come to you in due time." Keep your fingers crossed - it's not over yet!

I just found out that the rumors weren't true. One chapter will be holding COB events, and I'm not telling which one, just that I'll be going later this week!

All you MTSU people that know who it is, don't spoil it! ;)

Crystal, I am sending wonderful vibes your way. I really hope it works out for you. Also, I believe that you are already going to have a few friends there, so the match would be most excellent.

Wishing you the best luck in the world. I know that you will find your home sweet home.

Ok, here's the update: I had a great time, but it's not for me. The girls were great, and I hope to see them again in other settings, but something just didnt feel right. While I was there, I thought, "this is cool, maybe I could be happy..." but when I got home, all I could think of is, "I just wasn't that comfortable."

I am going to check out SAI I think. I have a friend in there, and we have a new chapter here. It's smaller, they're really close, and they seem to have a great time!

My home is somewhere I know, but that may or may not be in the Greek community. I'm involved in campus ministries, and I want to get involved in my new church as well. Either way, I've had a blast during recruitment, and I have no regrets or complaints!

I am so happy that you feel this way. I know so many people who have found amazing friendships in organizations other than in the greek community. I really hope you find your "home" at your new university, whether its in the greek community or not! Congrats on knowing yourself well enough to realize this!

It's the local on our campus, Phi Chi. They're such sweet girls, and they obviously love each other and have a blast! They want to eventually affiliate with an NPC group, and because it's so small right now, I get to see the fruits of all my labors and know that I helped build something. (Without the pesky process of finding a faculty advisor and all the paperwork that comes with founding a new group from scratch, which I thought about at first.) You guys have been so awesome through all of this. I can honestly say that I am glad that I was cut during NPC recruitment, as much as I loved some of the groups. I made tons of friends that I will try my best to continue to grow relationships with, but like I said, I'm home!

Crystal,
Congratulations...we are all so happy for you!!!! You will be a wonderful addition to Phi Chi, and if the decision is made to affiliate with a National organization, you will have so much knowledge to share with the other members from your experiences talking to many members of national organizations.

Hooray for Phi Chi!!! :)
