Well I got replies:

Group #1: My preferred one. Out of office reply. The person at HQ will not be back until next week. But I have already spoken to someone who is a member of a local chapter. We had dinner the other night and REALLY clicked

Group #2: Was originally my third choice but they are now my second. The only problem is right now they don't have a local collegiate chapter...but they are in the running.

Group #3. Was originally group #2 for me
They did reply to their credit.
Their reply:
An application for membership is completed by a sponsoring Group 3 and submitted along with two letters of support from Group 3. A letter of support from the alumnae group nearest the candidate's residence is also submitted. After a positive vote from the Council of Group 3 , the candidate is invited to be initiated into membership at a collegiate chapter.

Well I am rather new to the area so I don't know any group 3s.

Group 1 and 2 seem most receptive

So I have narrowed it down to 2

Yea, Jill! Welcome to another PNAM (prospective new alumna member.) There are many supportive sisters here to help you along. I have found everyone friendly and caring. They really want to help you find a home.

There are some really great groups that I would love to look into but they don't have chapters in my area...or even alumni chapters

Hi Jill!

I'm a regular GCer and I have been a PNAM since 2000! After some ups and downs with one sorority, I eventually found another awesome group to be involved with. Though, just when it looked like I'd reach the goal, I had to move to England for a year and a half! Doh! ;) But, the sisters have been excellent and told me that they wanted me to contact them first thing when I get home to the US.

Until then, I get to watch a lot of PNAMs like yourself go though the process and find their homes! :)

It sounds like you have some very promising leads! I wish nothing but the BEST for you and can't wait for that happy ending! :D

Yeah, the wait to hear back from people can be really long! So, if you ever need to vent, or you want to ask a question that you're too embarassed to ask in the forum, please feel free to PM me. Trust me, I've been there and done that when it comes to being a PNAM!

Good luck to you!

PNAM,

.....Kelly :)

I guess this is the best time to start AI...and the worst

it is the best because it is before fall recruitment.

It is the worst because I probably won't hear anything before September (mid July or August if I am lucky)

But the good thing is I have some AWESOME women in my corner! http://www.spacespider.net/emo/friends.gif

It is hard to be patient....

Have you heard the quote: G-d give me patience and I want it NOW!? http://www.spacespider.net/emo/tantrum.gif

I kinda feel that way!

Any vibes will be appreciated

ZTAMiami
06-25-2003, 03:55 PM
C'mon Jill. No impatience allowed! Things are happening for you! :D

CutiePie2000
06-25-2003, 04:10 PM
Patience, my pets, patience.

I know that it is not easy to be patient when you are so excited and want to shout it out from the hilltops, but believe me, your progresses sound very encouraging.

There are women who have gone AI before you (in various NPCs) who had false starts with groups, or they encountered alumnae who were suspicious of them or "pooh pooh'd" the idea of alumnae initiates (and because of the reception that they got from these alumnae, they had "start anew" from the very beginning) with a different group, thus making their journey to their "home" even lon-n-n-n-n-n-n-nger.

Please be grateful that this has not happened to you!
Hang in there....when it all comes together, you can shout it from the mountaintops - and not worry, we will all be there to listen and share in your happiness! :D

Can you mail order in a Lily?
Jill, I think y'all should keep a P.O. Box in Blaine so we can order stuff and send it there (a US mailing address is so much cheaper, duty wise, than getting it sent to Canada)

Jill1228
07-15-2003, 06:54 PM
Yes I can mail order a Lily!
And yes I do have a box in Bellingham right near where I work.

Shhhhh! Most of the packages that come there are for my Canadian friends! :D Which is why Dave (DH) won't be hip to the fact that I went shopping

Yes, but remember I live in Canada where the Canadian "peso" is very weak. Also, the shipping and handling, plus duty, taxes and GST (Goods & Services Tax)...it all adds up to beaucoup cash!! :(

Jill1228
07-16-2003, 02:50 PM
Which is why I keep a US address! :D I just pick it up on the way home from work (I work in Bellingham, WA) and carry it across the border.

I did that with one of the dresses for one of my bridesmaids who lives in Toronto.

The dress came to my house and I took it across to my mother in law's in Surrey and had it mailed from there!

Besides, it makes it easier to sneak things into the house :D

When you guys move across to Canada, you might want to look into getting a US Postal Box in Point Roberts. It might end up being closer, depending on where in Delta/Surrey that you are moving to.

3 days in advance won't necessarily work either :) Our schedule is done a week in advance. If you are requesting time off it has to be 2 weeks in advance.

If something comes up, you bettah get someone to cover your shift...

ETA-only a few of us are front desk qualified so it is MUCH harder to find someone to cover for me!

Well while I was in the washroom, Pres told Ce to get the ball rolling. (unbeknownst to me!)

I showed Ce the place we just moved in to...and then headed back to her place. She said she had something for me.

It was some paperwork. I was like WTF is that?
She said "You don't seem too happy". It was the AI paperwork for Alpha Phi! http://www.superbabies.homestead.com/files/crz_163.gif

I was stunned...like WHUUUUT????? I was shaking like a leaf....

It took a LONG ASSED time for it to register.

Ce can tell the story better

Man, I was in SERIOUS GC withdrawal...

Okay, so here's the story from the beginning:

From the moment I met Jill, I knew she would be an amazing friend. When I found out that she had almost the exact same experience during rush as I did, I was convinced that I would introduce her to Alpha Phi to see if she could see herself in our family.

Boy, she wasn't hard to convince at ALL! :D

Fast forward to this week: Jill met with one of the other alums, and they hit it off well. I e-mailed the woman she met with to get her opinion, and she gave her the thumbs up. After that meeting, the alum chapter president called Jill and arranged a meeting for Sunday. I didn't want to miss out on this meeting, so I tagged along.

Everything was GREAT - Jill was personable, knowledgeable, and showed her great committment to Alpha Phi's ideals, philanthropy, and spirit of sisterhood. When she went to the washroom, I pulled the pres aside and asked her what she thought. She told me to get the ball rolling and have Jill fill out her paperwork.

Jill and I went back to my house after meeting with the prez. I told her I had something for her, but wouldn't tell her what it was. When I gave her the paperwork, she just sat there. CATATONIC. No expression on her face. I stood there tapping my foot. "WELL?!? Don't you know what that is? What this means?!" She says "It says "Alumnae Initiation Application..." "DUH! What do you think that means?" No response from J. "GO AHEAD AND FILL IT OUT, SILLY!" :D

So she filled it out, and it really wasn't until we discussed payment options that it started to sink in... nearly 10 minutes later. She left my place in a total daze, still not convinced that this had actually happened for her. She told me that she screamed in the car on the way home.

I love my new sister, but dayum, she's kinda slow on the uptake, dontcha think? :D

Sistermadly told it well...except she didn't tell y'all I was more nervous than a hooker in church!http://www.smilies.okipages.com/s/contrib/blackeye/lol.gif
I talked a mile a minute...the last time I talked that fast was saying the vows at our wedding...ya gotta see the video...I was like damn slow down!

I was also saying a silent mantra "Please don't let me F up!"

So we stopped by my place and then headed to Vancouver. She said she had something to email me and then asked if I had a printer...our printer is a POS. Then she said she will give it to me at her house.

So we stopped by the corner store in her 'hood and then headed to her place. I had no idea she was http://superbabies.homestead.com/files/mischief.gif
Apparently her DH (aka Mistermadly) knew all about it.
She gives me these papers and is like "fill it out". Ok I start and was like "huh"?
Sistermadly says, "You don't seem excited". I am shaking like a leaf and wondering WTF?
It was like "Why should I be happy? It is not a bid--yet"

I am surprised she did not up and bitchslap me! http://superbabies.homestead.com/files/fish1.gif

See? I went to bed last night and all was quiet. Then, I woke up this morning to find several pages of congratulations on your bid to Alpha Phi! Doh! :)

The funny thing was that I was actually in the Rush thread when I found out. I was reading someone's thread when I saw one of your posts. I had read on down a few more posts when the little hampster wheel in my brain started turning. I was like "Waitaminit....did Jill's signature line say 'Alpha Phi AI 2003'?" I scrolled back up and looked at it. I then sat there and thought, "Wait, she's not an Alpha Phi is she? I know Sistermadly is....that's right, Jill had a meeting to go to........oh crumbs, I think I missed something. I know I should have gone to the Alumni forum first!!"

I did get an email from the other org that I was interested in. She apologized for not getting back with me. Things had been crazy with her...she is 8 months pregnant and trying to get things ready before going on maternity leave. From what I heard, she is a wonderful lady who is on the ball...so I can understand how crazy things have been for her.

I do hope to see her(and her new baby) around Vancouver Alumnae Panhellenic! Cause I would love to meet with her and say hello to her!

CONGRATS JILL...

IT'S THE TRIAD, BABY...IT'S THE TRIAD ALL THE WAY!!

When reading these threads on GC and seeing all these great gals that want to become PNAM, I am thankful for the experience that I was lucky enough to have as an undergrad, but it is these threads that have kind of rekindled my desire to get back in among my GLO, doing ??, I don't know, but something.

And, all you ladies that are Beta's out there, Jill promised me that we wouldn't lose her wholly to her new digs!!:D

Rachel, definitely get involved with AGD again! There are dozens of AGDs on GC who'd love to point you in the right direction :) If AGD is anything like AOII, you'll find that there's plenty you could do! From joining an alumnae chapter, volunteering as an adviser or on a House Corp, serving on a Regional or International committee or office, and that's just the beginning! Our sororities (and fraternities!) would not be able to function without alumnae involvement, so go for it!

And of course, Jill still rocks :D

Yes! Christin and gang, I think that I am going to get involved again. One reason that I wasn't able to be active with AGD any more was that I was too far from a chapter house 3-6 hours away, and, I just needed a break...long story.:p

Anyhoo, the things that I learned in Alpha Gam...community service, sisterhood, personal growth were certainly carried over into other areas of service that I performed in my community and have really made me even more appreciative of my Beta Sigma Phi sisters and experiences. Just today I had a good talk with a Beta sister about rushing for "quality" and not "quanitity" (sp?). It made her feel better, I could tell, and I know that I could not have been confident in that conversation had I not had Alpha Gam...

All the gals that I am meeting on GC are great. I am so proud of these ladies that are pursuing their dreams for AInitiation.

Take care!!

Jill1228

Yogi is doing fine! :)
The Hellevator is comparable to the Big Shot in Las Vegas. Here is a description of the Big Shot...

Big Shot
'Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky.

http://www.thrillride.com/BigShot/uptower.gif

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Close your eyes and imagine:

You're flying over Las Vegas in a Piper Cub, about 900 feet above the desert sands.

Suddenly, the fuselage rips away, and your seat flies straight up and out of the plane,
soaring another 160 feet above terra firma.

Gravity's pull brings you to a breathless halt: you're 1,080 feet above the ground
with the wind whipping through your hair.

And then you begin to fall...

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Sounds like fun? Then step right up and help yourself to the BIG SHOT.

But the real action's on Level 12A. There, 921 feet up, you board the BIG SHOT, a Space Shot ride created by S&S Sports Power, the largest bungee jumping company in the world. At first glance, the Space Shot looks to be a stripped-down freefall attraction; it is much more than that. Instead of sedately lifting you to the drop height, this sucker rockets you up there, at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour.

Now, when you start at five feet above the ground, the Space Shot is plenty hair-raising enough. There's a lot of screaming involved.

But at 900 feet, this starts to get a little ridiculous. If you're afraid of heights, like myself, you are in for some major terror.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Four high-speed double-deck elevators carry you to the top of the tower at 1,800 feet per minute, making for a 30-second trip. And there, you won't find a very long line of people waiting to board the BIG SHOT. But before you head for the ride, make sure you take in the view from the observation decks. It's hard to appreciate what 900 feet really means until you're actually gazing down from that gut-wrenching altitude.

As you stand on line, you'll get a chance to witness a launch before it's your turn to board. Watch as everyone fumbles with the seatbelts, scrambling to get buckled in, laughing, shrieking - you'll never see a more nervous group of people, ever. Once things look secure, there's this low roar, the sound of a gargantuan air compressor building pressure. The passenger rig floats up off the loading platform, hovering gently, and everyone goes hysterical. A countdown begins: Three, Two, One...

KA - BOOM.

Then it's your turn.

The BIG SHOT seats 16 gamblers, four in a row, around the square 228-foot mast. The ride operators point you towards a row and let you hop on. You pull the shoulder harness down. A standard-issue seat belt connects the harness to the seat your butt is planted in. You'll be amazed at how hard it is to operate a simple seat belt when your hands are shaking uncontrollably.

The witty folks running the attraction when I was there began a phony countdown just as everyone was trying to get the damn belts locked. Yuk, yuk, just kidding. You can imagine the throat-ripping screams of distress.

The low roar signals the imminent launch. When the rig floats up, pulling your feet away from the platform, you'll wish you never left your mother's womb. Three, Two, One...

KA-BOOM.

As you shoot 160 feet up, you'll experience 4 G's and a rush of adrenaline like none you've ever experienced before. When you hit that 1,081 foot peak, you'll have barely a heartbeat to contemplate the view (if your heart is still functioning). Then, the freefall to end all freefalls... Halfway down, they boost you back up. Another freefall. Once more, they shove you up again. Finally, you float back down onto the loading platform. Alive.

I've never hollered louder or harder, and I did it without an ounce of shame.

For maximum dementia, two riders' tips: 1) Keep your eyes wide open, and 2) Hold your arms and legs straight out in front of you. No white-knuckle grip on the harness allowed.

I plan on doing the Big Shot again when I go to Vegas (provided they don't close it down due to high winds)

The Hellevator is mild compared to the Big Shot :D

I guess ya can tell I am a thrill ride/coaster fanatic.

Funny, I get sick on rides that spin but put me on a rollercoaster that has a 200+ foot drop at 70+ miles an hour and I am in heaven!

Oh yeah I love Coasters with loops too! The one I REALLY want to tackle:
Millenium Force at Cedar Pt
http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/inside_park/rides/thrill/millennium/photo_gallery/images/firsthill2VERT.jpg
Above All The Rest! Millennium Force, the most recent entry in Cedar Point's roller coaster arsenal, debuted in May of 2000 as the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the universe. Standing a breathtaking 310 feet into the air, this "giga-coaster" takes thrill-seekers on an incredible 93-mph journey along 6,595 feet of track that winds its way through the center of the park, crosses a lagoon and dives onto an island.

This weekend is the Founder's Day celebration. I am looking forward to it. It will be the first time I have seen most of the people since Pref. It will be great to meet some of the others I have not met yet.

After a lot of pondering, I broke down and ordered my badge. (the only reason I broke down was because I was trying to decide which style to get and budgeting my money for it!) I don't know if it will get here in time for initiation. It'a ALL GOOD!

The food was pretty good...better food there than at the wedding reception I went to a couple of weeks ago!

The highlight of the Founder's Day (well for me) was my Pledge/new member pinning ceremony. It was moving and I bit the hell outta my lip so I would not cry. I was pretty overwhelemed, but kept it on the DL.

Coming into the final week of initiation...8 days from now. I am meeting my Big for dinner tomorrow night and I have an event on Wednesday. The only time I will NOT complain about NOT having many hours at work this week (only 20).

My BIG told me if I buy any more Alpha Phi stuff, she will strangle me! :D
